"What really drives your thoughts? Pastor Teddy (a.k.a. Fred Kenney, Jr.) shares how God renews the mind, why just trying harder rarely works, and gives practical, Spirit-led steps toward lasting transformation. What area of your thinking needs God's renewal most?"

We walk through why spiritual renewal is God’s work in us, not a self-help project, and how the “flesh” quietly trains our desires away from God. Pastor Teddy uses stories, Scripture, and practical tools to show what a renewed mind looks like in daily life and how we can yield to the Holy Spirit as the process unfolds.

Spirit-Led Thinking And Renewal

SPEAKER_01

Lord, you know. You're now listening to play is the best. Spirit led. And because the spirit in us is now alive, we can also be led by his spirit in our thinking. And this is what the whole renewal, this is really the point of the renewal. It's like we can't go renew yourself. I can't renew myself. You ever hear somebody say, pull yourself up by your own bootstrap? I can't put I tried. I tried pulling myself up by my sneaker straps, it doesn't work. You can't do it, but God can do it. And that's the key. The Lord can do it.

SPEAKER_00

Thank you for joining us on this excursion today. Let's join Pastor Teddy, also known as Fred David Kenny Jr., the founder of Plays on Word Theater, as he does a deep dive into the Word of God.

Pressure To Conform And Think Clearly

SPEAKER_01

Things on it. One of the things was stand up on one leg, start patting yourself on the head and rubbing your belly and stick your tongue out. So I see a couple kids doing that, and I'm like, okay, but wait a second. He said read all the directions. Anyway, I start reading more. I'm reading through, and it was just do a handstand, do a do some do uh do jumping jacks, spin around, like all these different things. Before we got to 20, I noticed a bunch of kids that were doing all these crazy things, but there were even the smart kids were doing. And y'all know who the smart kids were. They were even jumping around and doing stuff. And but I saw a couple kids just sitting there reading, and I was a slow reader. And so I was I'm I'm uh I felt pressure to well, I want to do what everybody else is doing, or they're gonna know that I I didn't get, I don't read it. But I said, no, let me just read it. I got to the last line. Guess what the last line said? Don't do any of the directions above these lines. This line right here. Don't do any of the, don't do any of the directions. Don't follow. And so, and as I got to it, I saw there was a there was maybe the not so smart kids, but I was with them. Because they were sitting there, and when they were done, I was like, oh wow, Margaret's done. She's not doing it, she didn't do anything. Let me get to the and I got to the bottom of it. Don't do anything. The bottom line is there was a lot of pressure to conform. And we feel that, we, we feel that. We feel pressure to conform. The world is constantly pressuring us. Now, I might step on some toes here. Uh believe me, that's not gonna go too far, but we we know what this is like. I mean, many of us, we know what this is like. Pressure to conform, we kind of just went through it. Yeah, what are they thinking? That's not working. That's not working, but he's good to go. Yeah, whatever. How about this one? This one's really gonna get you. What? Come on now. Pressure. We experienced it first first hand. And and anybody who thought about thought about it critically and engaged in critical thinking was put down. No, you can't say, you can't ask any questions. That's all I'm gonna say

HALT Warning Signs Of The Flesh

SPEAKER_01

about that. The point is the flesh does not care. The flesh does not care about the things of God. No, the flesh is fallen. It does, has anybody here ever been hangry? Oh, y'all laughing. You know what I'm talking about. I didn't eat too much this this evening. I'm almost I'm on the verge of being hangry right now. You know, it's your flesh talking to you. The flesh does not care. And when I say the flesh, it's it's the fallen, it's this fallen, the fallen nature that our our body, our soul, it's fallen. So the only thing the flesh wants to do is eat, drink, breathe, and have pleasure. Deny it any one of those things, and it will kick back on you. Hey, we you guys got good insurance here at Sandy Cove? Good insurance? I wanna I wanna try something. I wanna try something. We're gonna try a little experiment on my own. I want you to hold your breath, deny your flesh breathing. All right, what's gonna happen? You could die. But she said they got good insurance, so we'll be all right. So, no, no, no. You could what's gonna happen is you're gonna pass out. You'll probably pass, or you'll give up and be like, I can't take it anymore. But if you pass out, guess what? Your flesh will take over and override your will to hold your. It's the same thing with with with drinking water. You want it, you want, it wants to, it wants to drink, it wants to eat. And I I stole this from Charles Stanley, but I give him the credit. But he had this acronym, it's called HALT. And it's kind of like your spiritual dashboard. And the H is for hungry, and the A is for angry, the L is for lonely, and the T is for tired. HALT. If your dashboard, the meters get too high on any one of them, hungry, angry, lonely, or tired, you, your flesh, you can give your flesh a chance to really kick back. And if I'm hungry and angry and tired, y'all need to pray for me. My wife just said amen. So, okay. So, what does God say? What does God say? This is where this is where sin really starts. Let me let's look at what God says. I just have a couple texts here. It's he says in Romans, he says, it's basically God says it starts with our desires. Okay? Sin starts with our desires. Romans 13 says, put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh. There it is, to gratify its desires. In Galatians, he says, But I say, walk by the spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For what? The desires of the flesh are against the desi against the spirit, and the desires of the spirit are against the flesh. For these are opposed to each other to keep you from doing what you should do. Let's go. We have a couple more here. And those who belong to Jesus Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. And look what John says. He says, For all that's in the world, the desires of the flesh and the the the and the desires of the eyes and the pride of life is not from the Father, but from the world. James, I'm not gonna give you the whole Bible here, but this James says, Let no one say when he is tempted, I'm being tempted by God. For God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he's lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is fully grown, brings forth death. The couple that was up here this morning was talking about that. And let me just give you this last one. Going back to the book of Genesis, when sin first came on the scene. In in Genesis chapter three, that's when everything goes downhill. In verse six, it says, So when the woman, of course, talking about Eve, when she saw, there we go, she saw that the tree was good for food and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired, to make one wise. Eve, don't do it, but she did. She took of its fruit and ate. And she also gave some to her husband, who was there with that's the key line for me. Everybody wants to blame Eve. Adam's right there, like dopey doopy do, okay. And he eats. She gave to him. I don't have it, I do have an Adam play. He doesn't do that in the Adam play. So that's a that's a whole nother another story for you guys. Bottom line is desires. It starts in the heart. We need a new mind. The heart is corrupt, and the heart, and the when I say the heart, that that's representing our deepest who we are in our soul.

Body Soul Spirit And Broken Connection

SPEAKER_01

So we need a renewed mind. So what is the nature of a renewed mind? Okay, so we're essentially, we're essentially a trinity. Body, that's how we interact with the world, our flesh, soul, our psyche, who we are, who we are. That's kind of invisible, that part. Our soul, our psyche, and our spirit, Numa, our spirit, that's how we enter, that's how we operate with with God. And there is a difference between soul and spirit. Somebody might try to tell you there's no difference between soul and spirit. Oh, yes, there is, because the scripture it's himself, God says in Hebrews 4, the word of God is alive and active, sharper than any two-edged sword. It's able to divide between the division of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. So if there can be a division according to Hebrews, then there is a there is a difference, and they use different different Greek words even there. When sin entered, in when at when Eve, when she ate of that fruit when she gave to her husband, and he ate, when sin entered the human condition, the spirit connection, remember that broken cable? Was severed. Connection, fellowship with God was is no longer the same. Things are different. Not only that, the spirit died in our Trinity of us. Our spirit was dead, reckoned as dead. Now you've got the flesh wanting to do its own thing, and the soul wanting to help it out, not really caring about the spiritual things of God. Paul said in Romans 7, he said, Man, the things I I want to do, I don't do. The things I don't want to do, I keep doing that. So if I do the things I don't want to do, it's it's sin that's living in me. And then this guy writes over two-thirds of the New Testament letters, and he goes on to say, What a wretched man I am. I'm a wretch. Who can save me from this body of death? But he doesn't stop there. He says, Thanks be to God through Christ Jesus, our Lord. And then he goes on to say, There's no condemnation for those in Christ. So the point being, the flesh, even Paul, even the Apostle Paul, he struggled. When we came to Christ and were born again, our spirit was revived in him. Then and the Holy Spirit comes and sets up camp and resides with us, but our spirit is made alive, the connection back to fellowship with God. Now, now that I've got peace with God, because I've come to Christ through faith, trusting him, now I have peace with God. I can have the peace of God which surpasses all understanding. It doesn't work the other way around. You can't have the peace of God without peace with God. I said that before. And what happens is the connection is restored and you get power back. So God gives us new categories. We go when we come to Christ by faith, God gives us new categories. He gives us, we go from self-centered, which is the trinity. I it's I call it it's kind of my trinity sometimes. I call it the trinity of stupidity. Me, myself, and I. That's the trinity of stupidity. And we go, we come to Christ, and when our mind gets renewed, when we come to Christ, we go from self-centered to Christ-centered. We go from temporary thinking to eternal thinking. We go from flesh-led, which is fallen, to spirit-led. I tried pulling myself up by my sneaker straps. It doesn't work. You can't do it. But God can do it, and that's the key. The Lord can do it. Now, oh, but Pastor, I don't know. That sounds like it's you're just preaching all happiness. Listen, this is a process. Renewal is both decisive, it happens, and an ongoing process.

The Car Shop Picture Of Sanctification

SPEAKER_01

Let me tell you another story because I'm a storyteller. Speaking of the car that I didn't wake up as, I relate to this car very much. This car is rusted out. It probably has animals and maybe even people living in it. Nothing works. The electronics don't work at all. The tires are all messed up. Let me tell you the story now. There's a car collector. He's coming by. And he sees that thing, and he says, ho ho ho. That thing is perfect. It's perfect. The guy who owns the barn here, he's like, What are you eating, man? What are you talking about smoking? Perfect. And the car collector says, I want I want to buy it. I will pay you full price for it. Are you kidding me? Full price for that piece of junk? He pays full price. The car collector brings his flatbed truck, puts this car on his truck, and he takes it back to his shop. Now he's declared this thing perfect, but now he's breaking out the tools. And he's breaking out the whatever that was. He breaks out the grinder. He breaks out the torch. He has to cut some stuff off. He's got to go back and grind more. He's got to weld some stuff on it. He's got to fix. I guess they didn't have computers. I was gonna say they fix the software, but he's got to fix the wiring. And then he goes and once he once he finally gets it somewhat cleaned up, got it, gets it all cleaned up the way he's calling it, he goes and gets his paint and starts painting it, gets the chrome on it. Still not right though. He gets the buffer. Still is not working. And he starts working really hard. Elbow grease, gets the other buffer with the and he's not gonna stop. He does not stop until he sees his reflection. You're that car. I'm that car. He's the car collector. He doesn't stop until he sees his flate, his face, us reflecting Christ, who's the image of God. It doesn't, it's a process. We're all in his shop right now. You can't expect to be like that right now. This is what more and more of us look like. But yet, what did he say? He said, That's perfect. I'm buying that, I'm paying for that. I want that. And that's what he said about us. Take a look again. You can see a reflection of the cameraman. That chrome is popping. Because he didn't stop, and he will not stop until he sees his reflection. Yes, that's the ugliness right there. That's us. And some of us, he's got to use the hammer on to bang out dents. Some of us, he has to order new parts. The lights are all dim. They're not making any light. There's no light coming from them. He replaces the filament, the battery, new tires, new tread, everything. And there you go, right there. Same car. Look at that. From that to that. We do not know what we're gonna be like, but when we get to glory, we're gonna go, wow, I didn't have words to explain it. No eye is seen, no ear is heard, no mind can conceive of what God has planned for those who love him. I'm telling you right now, and I want you to come up to me when we're in glory and let me know. Say, hey man, you you you did an okay job, but If nothing like this, the half wasn't even told. So when you get down on yourself or if you feel bad, oh man, my renewal process is really terrible. I don't even think God's working on me. Remember, remember, remember where you were in the first place. Remember you were here. And we're in his shop. We don't get to this. The car show doesn't happen until we're in glory, until the Lord comes back. But when we come back, that's gonna be the car show. Because we will be reflecting, we will be clothed in the righteousness, first of all, and we'll be reflecting his image, the image of God, which is what Adam lost when he sinned. Boom, everything faded and went to dark. And since then, mankind, we have no clue. That's what I'm saying. We have no clue on what glory is like, but I'm telling you right now, the renewal by the Spirit of God, who is invested in us to the point of death and beyond. He shed his blood so that we would not just know him, but we would reflect him, be like him, have the mind of Christ. Let me keep going before we run out of time.

Word Spirit And Fellowship As The Means

SPEAKER_01

The means of a renewed mind. Okay, so how do you get to how do you get to this? Well, let's take a look. I'm a big proponent of the scripture, the word of God, John. It Jesus in his high in his high priestly prayer, he said to the Father, Sanctify them in the truth. And then he adds to the equation, your word is truth. Jesus himself said that he is the way, the truth, and the life. So the truth, the word of God, and he uses the term, he says, sanctify them. That's being in the shop. You hear a lot of Christianese words like sanctification and glorification and justification, all that, all that kind of stuff. Well, sanctification is the process of being the process of being in his shop. In the book of Hebrews, it says that by his one sacrifice he has perfected those that are being sanctified. Yeah. Hebrews 10 14. That's those that are being those that he has he has declared them perfect. We have been declared perfect. When you come to Christ, you are declared right in God's sight. Yet he starts working, he has to work, and that's the process of sanctification. So the word of God, let's see what else Jesus says. He says, When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. For he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears, he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. First of all, right there, you gotta notice the pronouns that Jesus uses for the Holy Spirit. He and him. That tells you right there the Holy Spirit is not some energy force. There are some groups that want to say he's not a person. Well, Jesus clearly is using pronouns for him, says he will not speak on his own authority. Speaking of this Holy Spirit, he is a person. Absolutely important. So we have the word of God, we have the Spirit of God who really does the work, but it's a tandem thing. The Word of God, Jesus is called the Word of God. In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Uh through him, all things were made. Without him, nothing was made that has been made. So Jesus is the word. You want to get to know God, get to know Christ. And you get to know Christ through the Word. You can't get to know Christ fully, the proper way, just by being spiritual. If you're not getting the Word of God, you are malnourished because the Word of God is food for your soul. It is food for your spirit, which has been made alive. The other thing is you need to be with the people of God, like we are right now, in fellowship with the people of God. God told me a long many, many years ago, way before I was a pastor, when he was calling me back to him, he told me, you need to be in fellowship. And I was like, Yeah, but you know, I can watch Charles Stanley on TV, you know, and I can listen to pre- I listen to preachers and I listen to worship music. And God put on my heart, no, you need to be in fellowship. You need to be in a fellowship and be in fellowship. And if you're not in fellowship, you're setting yourself up because the enemy has a field day with people that are acting like Lone Ranger Christians. And I know some of you might not know who the Lone Ranger is. Some young folks are like, I said something about, I just jokingly, I at my church I said, I want to lead worship as if I'm John Wayne one time. I want to get up there and be a how great is our God, how great, and like people under 30 were like, who? I was like, John Wayne. How do you not know who John Wayne is? They didn't know. Okay, so I'm off the rails on that. So, no such thing as a long range, lone ranger Christian. And many people attend. Church for reasons such as you know sermons, music, or coffee, but they overlook how important their presence is. God has designed us for fellowship. That's part of the programming. That's how He designed us to work together, to be together, to be in fellowship. Isolation, you might as well just put a bullseye on yourself and say, enemies team, I'm here. Shoot me down as best you can. Take your best shot. It sounds ridiculous. Let me give you a different example. Did anybody here ever barbecue with charcoal? Nobody barbecues with charcoal? Everybody? Okay, amen. Amen. All right. So if you get the coals going and they get nice and hot, right? They get red hot and then white hot. If you take the tongs and take one of those coals off that pile, put it to the side, that coal starts to cool off. You take that coal that's cooling off, put it back with the ones that are hot, and the fire gets even hotter. It heats. It's the same with fellowship. Don't ever let the enemy talk you out of being in fellowship with the believers. And it's not, I'm going to church to see what I can get. I like the music or I like the coffee or I whatever. I like the pastor or whatever. Hopefully, you like the pastor if you come to visit my church. But that's not the reason. No. The Lord tells us we're supposed to be in fellowship. We're built to be in fellowship. And you don't know how the Lord will use you to impact another believer. Maybe it's just a smile or just touching on the shoulder. Hey, good to see you. Maybe that's what that person needed, might have just brought them off the ledge. Either way, do not neglect the fellowship. So that's that's really important for us as well. He sells it, let me finish this part. He he will glorify me and take what is mine and declare it to you. Speaking of the Holy Spirit, all that the Father has is mine. Therefore, I said, He will take of what is mine and declare it to you. So let's we'll finish this up with what are the marks of a renewed

Marks Of A Renewed Mind In Practice

SPEAKER_01

mind? What are the marks of it? Well, let me go back to this. Our well, you don't need to read this, but I tell you what, I'm gonna read it. I just put it up there so you can see. But this is from Ephesians 4. I'm gonna read from from verse 25. Listen to what Paul says. He says, Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor. For we are members of one another. Be angry, do not sin. Don't let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil. Let the thief no longer steal. He's he's giving his this is instruction. Listen, the Bible is a is a is a it's a it's a it's a user's manual for life. Listen to this. Verse 28. Let the thief no longer steal that me, he may have something to share with anyone in need. Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Oh, the Bible doesn't say don't you're not supposed to cuss or nothing like that. Listen, it does actually. This is convict. Drop a hammer on your foot and think about this verse. Ephesians 4 29. I was gonna get a tattoo of it. Because I drop hammers on my foot all the time. Let no corrupting all come out of your mouth, but only such as good for building up as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Now, this is the key, verse 30, and do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God by whom you are sealed for the day of redemption. That's the car show. And you can grieve him, he can be grieved. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Paul also tells us that there is available to every single one of us if we come to Christ, that there is available to every one of us the fruit of the Spirit. And the the folks earlier today talked about this. And one of them is self-control, which absolutely it's a fruit. It's not a gift, it's a fruit. That means it's if the spirit of God's in you, then it's available to every single believer. Self-control. This is part of the renewing, this is part of the renewing of the mind here. And notice the spirit is involved here, the fruit of the spirit. So, in conclusion, I'm gonna close up. We looked at the necessity of a renewed mind, the corrupted self, the nature of a renewed mind, from self-centered to Christ-centered. That's what it looks like. The means of a renewed mind, the word of God. It listen, if you're not getting the word of God, you could get, you know, if you don't like reading, there's audio Bibles. Instead of doom scrolling, I'm gonna talk about this, I think, tomorrow's message, but instead of doom scrolling, like my man was talking about earlier today, get an audio Bible, get the word of God in you. You can one I went through the entire Bible in one month, one time, just by when I was commuting, listening to the Word of God from Genesis to Revelation. Bunch of the stuff I had no idea what was going on, but I was going in the ear gate. I was listening to it. And the Holy Spirit has been able to bring things back to my remembrance. And my life has never been the same since I digested that much scripture. I made it a point to not go to sleep until I got in. One time I was so tired, I read the shortest verse in the Bible. Jesus wept, closed the Bible, went to sleep. But I got fed. I got fed the word of God. I make that covenant with yourself. I'm gonna get a dose of the word of God every day, every day, at some point, and I guarantee the Holy Spirit will start to renew your mind. You will think differently. And not only that, the things in the scripture start lighting up in ways that you're like, wait a minute, whoa, I remember this from back then, and all the connections start to make sense. The problem is we're so malnourished in many ways. Yeah, get the word of God, the means of a renewed mind, the word, the spirit of God, yielding to his spirit, abiding with him, abiding with him, and even asking him, Lord, help me. The people of God, yeah, we talked about that, and the marks of a renewed mind, new new responses, and new priorities. He has given us new priorities. I wanted to ask a couple questions. What area of your thinking most needs renewal right now? Identify it, bring it under scripture, and invite the Spirit of God to reshape it. Something to think about. Just, just, you know, and every one of us, we're remember we're in the shop right now. We're in his shop. I don't know anyone that's on the, you know, at the car show yet. And the other question I have for you is how does the concept that the flesh does not care about the things of God, how does that manifest in your daily life? And what practical steps can you take to walk by the Spirit? It's just something to contemplate and to think about. And Andrea Hampton is always saying that this place is a great place to get alone with God and ask those questions.

Reflection Questions And Closing Prayer

SPEAKER_01

Amen today. Heavenly Father, Lord God, thank you for thank you for this group here, Lord. And I just pray that by your spirit, Lord God, we would grow in the knowledge of you and the understanding of you. And just thank you, Lord, for the opportunity to share from your word. I just pray that you would just bless every single person here, Lord God. And help us, Lord, we are in your shop right now, Lord God. Help us to yield to you and so that you don't have to break out the hard tools on us. That it's that it would be a joy for both of us and not painful while we're in your shop as you're working on us so that we reflect your image. We thank you, Lord. And I pray for anybody here in this room who has not made it official with you, Lord God. I pray that today would be the day that they are in Christ, that they would come to you and have peace with you so they can have the peace of you. And I just pray this in the mighty name of Christ Jesus, the name above every name and all God's people say. Amen. Thank you guys for letting me come up here. Thank you. Amen.
