"What happens when a desperate prayer at 1 a.m. becomes the beginning of a completely transformed life? Today, The Sassman’s share the raw story of Larry’s journey through heroin addiction and alcoholism—and the moment he cried out, “Lord, if you’re there…” What followed was an encounter he describes not as self-control, but as rescue."

A Midnight Prayer For Proof
SPEAKER_01Lord, you know. You're now listening to play is the best. So one night I did, uh, probably about one in the morning. She asked me if I would ask the Lord into my heart. And I said, Well, I'm not sure he's real, so I'm not gonna be a hypocrite, but if you're telling me I can say it the way I really feel, then I will. She said yes, and I prayed, Lord, if you're there, if you're really God, Jesus, if you're real and you died for me on the cross, I want to know about it. Uh, would you come into my life right now?
Remembering Pastor Shaw’s Legacy
SPEAKER_00Hello and welcome to Plays on Word Radio, where we discussed, analyzed, work, and play on the word of God. Thank you for joining us on this excursion today. Let's join Pastor Teddy, also known as Fred David Kenny Jr., the founder of Plays on Word Theater, as he does a deep dive into the Word of God.
SPEAKER_03Uh welcome to Plays on Word Radio. It's been a long time since we've had you guys on. We're with Larry and Becky Sassman, who basically I was gonna call you the gatekeepers at Calvary Chapel of Mammoth in Leonardo, New Jersey, where those of you that that are veterans to the radio program we do here, if you've listened for a long time, early on, I forget which episode, it might have been one or two or three. So I think it might have been the third episode, something like that. Very early on, we did an interview with our beloved Pastor Shaw. And Pastor Shaw right now is in glory with Jesus. And he went, he went to he he got on that flight, what what was it, January, February?
SPEAKER_02March 4th.
SPEAKER_03March. I knew it was right around somewhere in that early part of the year, March 4th. And uh I had the I had the just the the blessing of being able to sit with him for just a brief time after we did our was it Christmas Joe? We did Christmas Joe.
SPEAKER_02Christmas Joe, yes.
SPEAKER_03Christmas Joe. I want to say probably in in December of 25. And you could see he it's he had slowed down even more. He he was really slowing down, and but it was just such a blessing. And I had I had a strange feeling. I said, This might be the last time I see him. And so I I just went up to and I I put my hand on his shoulder and I said, Thank you so much for all you've done for the body of Christ, man. Just God bless you, thank you so much. And he had this smile on his face. He and then he was he was eating some cake or something, and he was just enjoying his cake and just enjoying being just being around the the place. We had a bunch of people in the church sanctuary there, and it was a a really blessed time. So I I thank you guys, you know, and and not only is is our dear brother Pastor Shaw, but he's reunited with Nancy. Yes, and Nancy was my connection originally to you guys. That's how I I was sent to her house to fix the phone telephone or something. I had to fix something.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, cable.
SPEAKER_03Yep, and fix it cable. And we got got her, and we just had a we had a blessed time of fellowship, just just sitting there talking, and I was like, this is amazing. You know, I don't really I don't even know this lady, but we have history that goes back because of Christ. So it was just such a such a blessing. I I wanted to you know, I've been wanting to get you guys on, and I just
Leading After Loss And Weekly Teaching
SPEAKER_03you know wanted to just see how they how are things going there in the absence of our dear brother. Has it been a chance? What's been the biggest challenge for you?
SPEAKER_01Well, um Yeah, he was he was 93 years. He had just turned to 93 when you saw him. He started preaching when he was 20. So he was he was doing it for 73 years. Wow, yeah, and I've I've been saved right now since 75. So I've been saved for 51 years, but only really ministering publicly, you know, one-on-one's a different story, but publicly since I don't know, for maybe 15 years and was doing it in the sense of of speaking at church and things. I was doing it very part-time. I was doing it when he couldn't or had another commitment. So now transitioning from that to every week is a challenge in certain areas. Yeah. It was a challenge before in the sense of I'll I'll have to pick out a subject or a scripture to speak on. Now it's I'm just doing continual, you know, we're going through books, and every once in a while you hit a chapter that it it appears at a cursory reading, there's not a lot to talk about there, you know. Or it was it was very repetitive of the previous chapter, things like that. So that to me, that line by line, word for word, going through a book is is a challenge in that sense. And it's been working out. You know, I I trust the Holy Spirit fills me with the right things when I'm when I'm on the pulpit. I know I've gone up thinking, well, I only got maybe 15 minutes of stuff here, and I look at the clock, and before I'm finished, it's 45 minutes has passed. So I know that certainly is God working through me. So it's been a challenge, but but also a blessing. We've seen a few new people come in, and as you know, we're we're a small congregation, but we've seen a few new people come in and stay. We've seen a few new people come in and not stay, also, but we have had a few stay. One of which is a recovering alcoholic who I can relate to because I did have issues in the past with some substances, including alcohol. And yeah, it's it's been a blessing. Hopefully, it's been a blessing to others, not just myself.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know, I pray that that people are getting touched every week and that the word that's coming forth is gonna help them get closer to the Lord or heal them of a situation that they're in, whatever the case may be. How about you, Becky?
SPEAKER_02The biggest challenge time, having enough time. We just moved our our home from Tintin Falls to Freehood. So just getting settled in and trying to have time to not let anything else go to the wayside while we're trying to get settled here.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But yeah, it's been interesting.
SPEAKER_03That's the you've had a year of change.
SPEAKER_02Yes. A lot of change.
SPEAKER_03Year of change. And you know, Larry, I I can relate to to going each Sunday, you know, be being an assistant pastor, I'm not bringing the word every Sunday. I was leading worship or ministering, but I wasn't bringing, you know, preparing a message every Sunday. And that was I had to find an equilibrium on that because from doing the plays and then each, you know, it's it, it's a it's a buzz that's happening all the time. There's just like an electric buzz that's it's you're always in prep. You know, it's it's always it's just always being tethered to the to the good Lord. I like to, you know, we go verse by verse through the scripture and just move through. And that's a that's a blessing in the sense that okay, I get to I get to do this. There are some challenges sometimes with certain difficult passages, like how do how am I supposed to present this? But yeah, I I can um I can relate to that. Let me ask
Larry’s Testimony From Drugs To Jesus
SPEAKER_03another question. Uh Larry, you kind of brought this up. You said you, you know, you've been saved for for 51 years, 50 years. How did you come to meet Jesus, man? Tell me, tell us about this situation because we all we always ask this question how do you come to meet Jesus?
SPEAKER_01Uh it's it's I have three testimonies. Okay. Short, medium, and long. Okay. The short is I'm scum, God save me. Okay. Pretty, pretty much I was from from the time I was 16, the summer I was born in April. So that summer I I got into smoking pot, things like that. When that high was getting like sort of boring, went on to other things. Did a lot of a lot of LSD, smoking hash, smoking pot, hash oil, a lot of things.
SPEAKER_03So you were related to the people, you were you related to the people in the in the Jesus Revolution movie then, right? Okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I was on the wrong coast for that, but yeah. Um so you know, things, things moved on. I went in the service, I was overseas in Africa for a year and a half. Africa. And the the day I got there, there was a brother from Chicago area who I had been in basic training with. And, you know, he he was taking a nap in the barracks when I was unloading my stuff, and we saw each other. And he's like, We got to go downtown, man. I said, I just got here. What do you mean we got to go downtown? He goes, we got to go to a drugstore. I said, Baker, why do we have to go to a drugstore? And he's like, Because they sell drugs there. So my first day in in Asmera, Ethiopia, I was in a drugstore where they sold liquid pharmaceutical cocaine, liquid pharmaceutical morphine. What? Needles. No, this this wasn't a Walgreens or or or CVS. No, this was a little pharmacy. But they I guess they cocaine is big over in certain areas of northern Africa and southern Europe, and they use it to stimulate the brain in slow learners. Okay. But anyway, we used it for a different reason. So got got involved in a lot of that, eventually led to a pretty good amount of heroin use. And when I came back, I was just seeing some people I hadn't seen in a couple of years, and a very close friend, a girl named Joelle, who I was like, she was like my sister when I when I was young, a little younger before I went in the service. We were good friends, and I'm talking to her, and she said, Oh, you got to come to where I work. My boss is a great guy. You and him will get along, this and that. And it was a little antique shop, grocery store, coffee house. And a lot of things going on. And I was hanging out. I wasn't working, I was I was going to college, compliments of the army and getting a little money from unemployment, things like that. So I just started hanging out at this place, and I got to know the owner pretty well. And Friday nights, a bunch of Jesus people would be coming in every Friday night, getting their milkshakes or bagels and whatever, and singing Christian songs. And Dave and I would hang out in the kitchen laughing at them, you know, calling them Jesus freaks and this stuff. But the word was getting inside me, and I didn't even realize it at the time, but it was getting inside. And one night I was talking to one of the women in this group, and she said, Larry, we, you know, we need to talk. Come over to the house one time after and just let's just talk. So one night I did, probably about one in the morning. She asked me if I would ask the Lord into my heart. And I said, Well, I'm not sure he's real. So I'm not gonna be a hypocrite, but if you're telling me I can say it the way I really feel, then I will. And she said yes, and I prayed, Lord, if you're there, if you're really God, Jesus, if you're real and you died for me on the cross, I want to know about it. Uh, would you come into my life right now? And I had physical reaction that I couldn't chalk up to anything other than you know what I had just prayed. The Holy Spirit touched me, swells inside me over and over, having come from a drug-oriented background. The only thing I could relate it to was rushes that you would get from drugs, but it was different. It was pure, if I can use that word. Again, I wasn't familiar with any of this. And I got up the next morning, I went to a friend of mine's apartment to tell him what had happened to me, to tell him about the Lord and that God's real. And he opened the door and said, Come on in. There was a guy from New York at his apartment, Nasbury, and there were guns on the coffee table and a lot of cocaine. And first thing Bill said to me was, Here, have a spoon on me. And without even thinking, I said, I don't need that, I don't want that. And then I'm thinking to myself, Wow, why did I say that, you know? And asked him to come out in the hall and and I told him about the Lord a little bit. And he told me I took some bad acid and slammed the door in my face. So, you know, uh, we we got together on the phone years later, maybe five, six years ago. We located each other and had a few talks, and he was a little little mellower than he was when he was, you know, 1920, 21, as I'm sure we all are a little mellower. But at any rate, the Lord touched me. I was filled with the Holy Spirit at the same time that that I accepted the Lord. We're all filled with the Holy Spirit when we accept the Lord. John, John 20 tells us that, you know, Jesus breathed on them, breathed the Spirit, but then in Acts 2, they were filled with the Holy Spirit, and that's that baptism of the Holy Spirit, we call it. That's a situation that could take place when you get saved or a long time later. And I I I don't know why in my own situation. I think because I was overcoming a few things, and I probably needed it for the strength to to stop doing what I was doing, and it worked. I mean, I I I didn't want heroin anymore, and I was, you know, it was mainlining heroin. I was drinking for quite a few years, seven or eight years, a quart or more of Jack Daniels every day with a couple six packs of beer. Wow, I was doing I was always higher drunk or both. Oh my goodness, and all of a sudden, this stuff I just had no desire for it at all. It was gone, so it was gone. So God wow, he didn't just heal me and and use rehabs, which he does. I'm not I'm not discounting that. That's they're a wonderful thing, but he totally delivered me from any desire for any of that stuff.
SPEAKER_03Wow. Well, I guess when you when you talk to someone who's struggling with addiction, it it's not something that you had to read about in a book, something that you heard in a lecture. It's something something actually you've you've especially being delivered, being delivered from it is amazing, man. Like the Lord just totally just did a uh complete work where you were just like, No, I don't need that. Yeah, you know, and that's that's a friend of mine. He tells a a similar story. He said before he became a believer, his friend was witnessing to him, and he and he asked, He said, Well, well, he said, Hey, can you s can you still smoke pot as a Christian? And and his buddy who was witnessing to him said, Yeah, but you won't want to. Right. You won't you won't want to. You you're not gonna you're not gonna want to do it. You because you're gonna want to honor him and all the you know, everything you do. There'll be there's a difference. And that really is one of the things that intrigued this guy. He was like, wait, really? I'm I won't want to. And he explained that you know, your your heart and your desires change. There's a there's a uh a trajectory change when you when you truly trust Christ and say, All right, I'm gonna follow you, Lord, and you can have the keys and you drive. I'm gonna get in the passenger seat here. And you know, you a lot of most actually every time he changes the trajectory. For some people, he has to do a complete U-turn. Some people he has to just make a hard left, some people he has to make a hard right. Uh, but some people he goes off the road completely and and wow, that's amazing, man. Praise God, praise God for that. Yeah, I've been clean for a lot of years. Praise the Lord, man.
SPEAKER_01That's a testimony right there. Yeah. I I got to I got to a point after a number of years where I realized this wasn't this wasn't me, you know, who did it. I knew right away it was God who did it because it it happened too too quick too overnight. Yeah. But after maybe five or six years, I had a glass of wine or two with dinner once in a while, and I realized, wow, I can I can drink a glass of wine and not have a desire to drink more, which I never even conceived of, you know. Wow. Because with with my situation with alcohol, when I had some, I didn't want to stop.
SPEAKER_03I just, you know, yeah, well, well, you'd you'd have a drink and the drink would have you. So now you can have a glass of wine and it the glass of wine does not have that's where the problem is. It's not that you can't have it, it's really does anything chocolate is in control or whatever, whatever, whatever it is. Does it control you? Does it have you, or do you have it? You know, so I wow, that's that's amazing.
SPEAKER_01Amazing, you know. God is just and he works with us where we're at. You know, somebody else might not get delivered overnight, they might have to go through a rehab for whatever reason. We don't know. God knows everything, he knows, you know, he knows why we're that way, and he knows what's gonna keep us from getting healed or not getting healed, and he'll deals with us in that manner. And I I bless rehab places there, they're first of all, you know, AA talks about a higher power. When AA first started, it was God, they didn't have all the stuff they have today. I was just reading on the internet, there's a site about hi, I've been sober now for two weeks or for five years or whatever. And I scrolled to it once in a while, and I was just reading a guy who said to this person, oh, it's so so good that you know you had that higher power. And he goes, It doesn't matter what that higher power is, even it's it's the lady next door's cat. And so I had to say something, of course, and you know, replied that, well, that's that's nice to say, but the lady next door's cat doesn't have any power, and the only power that's really there is is through Jesus. Right. Good for you. Yeah, it's good for you for good for you for saying that. You know, yeah, I can't, you know, I can't. That's the one thing about AA, and I I I've gone to meetings, but not for myself. Just a buddy of mine and I used to go years ago, and you know, we'll talk to some of the guys after the meeting and talk to them about the Lord. And when somebody talks about the higher power being anything other than the living God, I have to interject something.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, good for you, good for you for on that, and
Deliverance And The Question Of Control
SPEAKER_03awesome. How about you, Becky?
SPEAKER_02I have a question about uh is it would it be wrong to just assume that you got saved by osmosis, you know, or just by that would be wrong because unfortunately or fortunately, we can't go by the experience of others in our life, even if we're born into the a Christian family. Amen. My dad took myself and my cousin and I don't know, some family members to a tent revival meeting when I was about six years old out in Pennsylvania, and they had a Sunday school teacher representing um the gospel, and she talked about the colors black, our heart is as black, and then red with the blood of Jesus, and we can become white with when we accept the blood of Jesus and can go to heaven at that point, anytime after. And so I accepted the Lord in my heart then at six years old.
SPEAKER_03Wow.
SPEAKER_02Uh Eddie, I know I received I didn't receive the baptism and the Holy Ghost at the same time, the the baptism. I think I was about 12 years old. And we went to my family went to a convention in Washington, DC, where Nikki Cruz was speaking to the youth, and I got to go to the youth meeting there, and he prayed for me. And I received the baptism in the Holy Ghost and spoke in tongues there with him.
SPEAKER_03Uh just the visual of Pastor Shaw going bringing you to a tent revival, and I I wish there was video of that, you know. I I I I miss, I really missed I miss that job.
SPEAKER_02No, you have to go by yourself.
SPEAKER_03Good for him. Wow, good for him.
SPEAKER_02So I made the stuff. Yes.
SPEAKER_03Wow, that's amazing. He Pastor Shaw is, you know, he he he loved the plays that we were doing, and he was he would help me out, help me out with different scenes. And thank you for bringing him when we would do Ocean Grove. What a blessing. What a blessing. It was for me from my perspective to look up and see Pastor Shaw smiling. Um you know, and because I didn't a lot of time I didn't see you guys come in. I would be doing the play and then I didn't see when you came in. And next thing no, I look up and I see I see I said, that's Pastor Shaw. And I didn't have my glass without my glasses, people kind of blur a little bit, and I said, I think that's Pastor Shaw.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And so I would I would always work him in, like when Pete in the Pete in the Pete play, Pete would always he would always talk to the rabbi from the synagogue there. So if I ever saw Pastor Shaw, I'd be like, hey Rabbi Shaw. His eyes would light up and he would just he would just smile, you know. So yeah, what what a blessing. And I, you know, I just I feel for you guys this year with the I mean moving uh by itself is enough of a challenge. I remember we moved we moved when we moved from New Jersey, well, no, well we moved out of our house in New Jersey to a temporary location where we were gonna stay until we moved to North Carolina. We're gonna stay in that place for a few months. We went on a mission trip. We moved on that Thursday and that Saturday, I think, or Sunday, we went on a mission trip overseas, and it was just it was just all this change, constant change. So when we came back from the mission trip, I I was used to coming back to my house, and I it was just very strange, very strange. And it took oh it took a while to settle into routines, yes, you know, it's into into a routine that's comfortable, even now. I mean, we've been here, it'll be three years in March. And wow, yeah, we're we're certain just now. I'm I'm noticing certain things that are uh just weather-wise down here. It was like, wow, who turned off the heat all of a sudden? It's not like it's it's not really cold here, but to just the two weeks ago it was blasting furnace heat, and all of a sudden now I walked outside this morning. I was like, wow, this is beautiful. What is going on here? This is amazing. So getting used to that. I haven't seen any snakes down here, which is good. Yeah, that's a good thing. Yeah, I have seen it, I have seen gators, but I haven't seen any snakes.
SPEAKER_02You know, I did take a mission trip when I was 17 to Scotland and England, oh, which was fun because we had at our church my dad was pastoring Emmanuel Baptist Church in Atlantic Highlands at the time. And I had this desire to see Scotland for some reason. And then a pastor came, I think it was David Wilkerson, somebody from that had to do with they ended up having to do with YWAM, Youth with a Mission.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_02Anyhow, and so they talked about trips to Scotland and and other places. I was like, oh, maybe that's why I have the desire to go
Becky’s Salvation Story And Mission Trips
SPEAKER_02to Scotland. And I went through the training at 16 years old, and then at 17 I got to go and we flew over because a friend from our church went also. We flew over in 1973 on the first transatlantic 747.
SPEAKER_03Really?
SPEAKER_02Yes. Oh my goodness, wow. We flew over there and then in Scotland. I stayed we stayed two weeks in a castle on an island. So and we went through some training there, and then we got to sit get out into the churches that were there, needed some just to to get some youth brought in and you know, minister to them, which we did. And then we went into I actually traveled by myself from Scotland to England by train.
SPEAKER_03Wow.
SPEAKER_02And uh well, ferry and train and bus, and then got to England and ministered in a neighborhood there, and and then Spree 73 was the uh ending of it. So we brought people from the neighborhood and their families, kids and their families to Spree 73, where Billy Graham crusade was taking place.
SPEAKER_03Oh my goodness.
SPEAKER_02And that was that was then.
SPEAKER_03So are you is there any plan to go back?
SPEAKER_02No, no, not much.
SPEAKER_03No desire, you haven't had a desire to go back to Scotland at all?
SPEAKER_02I would love to go back, but uh hasn't worked out. But no, I would love to go back.
SPEAKER_03Oh, we might have to get you to go back and just videotape. Becky goes back to Scotland.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I I I would I would love to visit Scotland. My cousin, he stayed there as an exchange student uh for a while. He and he he loved it. And I I would like to visit the Shetland Islands north of Scotland.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_03I'd like to visit that. Although it's I'm not trying to go, it doesn't get that as cold as it does here, there. Even like even up in the Shetland Islands, it's it doesn't like it's brutal here and there it's more mild. But that's one thing I'm appreciating about being down in the south. Uh it's you know, the is the cold for us, I mean 40 degrees, you know, and if it drops down to you know, below z but not below zero, I I don't think we've been below zero, but if it drops down and I think the coldest it got was like 19 degrees, but it drops to that, and then by doesn't stay. No, by 11 a.m. it's back to 38, 40, 32.
SPEAKER_02You know, well it's fall here, that's for sure.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's that's what they're telling me. I there was a storm, a storm or nor'easter or something, and flooding or supposed to hit late tonight.
SPEAKER_01Good grief, 60 mile an hour winds and a lot of rain.
SPEAKER_02It's supposed to last through Sunday.
SPEAKER_03Oh, well, hey, there you go. That's gonna be that'll be fun for the the Sunday service. What speaking of that, what time what time is your service? Let's let everybody know if anybody's in the Leonardo, Middletown, New Jersey area.
SPEAKER_01We start at 10:30, 10 Sunday mornings, okay. And we also have a uh small informal Bible study Wednesday evenings at seven.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01Right now we're in the book of Joshua. Uh I'm sorry, we just finished Joshua. We're in the book of Judges. Judges, all right, moving through. Yep.
SPEAKER_02And uh for for the Sunday morning service, people are welcome to stay for lunch. We have who made lunch after service. All right, and some stay, some don't.
SPEAKER_01One one particular family makes lunch every week. Wow, and if okay, for any given reason they don't come, then we don't. I'm a little concerned about where they live, whether they'll be coming this Sunday or not because of the storm. The storm, right? Yeah, yeah. They live in, you know, middle time. A few a few of our people live in areas that flood relatively easily.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_01So you know, we'll time will tell.
SPEAKER_02We'll be there. All right.
SPEAKER_03Well, we'll we'll keep you guys in in in prayer about that whole situation. And you know, we just we want to want to thank you guys for coming on. And you know, I miss Pastor Shaw and and Nancy. Um we're looking forward to glory. The older I get, the more I look forward to glory. I'm like, wow, it's this man. And I I often will tell the Lord, I'll ask him, I said, Lord, could you just say hi to so-and-so for me?
