The Cost Of Hiding

Victoria Odekomaya

She says something that I think I would never forget. She said, I guess I'm really good at hiding. She has spent years in an environment where work was supposed to speak for itself. So being visible felt wrong. And what comes back doesn't feel like you doesn't represent your level of expertise. The market does not reward invisible expertise. This is the one most people don't say out loud. You don't trust that someone else can represent your work properly. It's not confusion, it's paralysis. Because once you name that real problem, you already know you need to be more visible. So why haven't you done it yet? And I'm not talking to beginning business owners or someone who has just started that career. I'm talking about you. The one who has already built something real, either in business or has earned that executive title in your corporate job. The one who gets results, the one who knows you should be showing up more, letting people beyond your current circle know of your expertise or solution. Not because you want to be braggy, because people with less experience or expertise are getting the opportunities meant for you. They're getting the accolades, they're getting the clients, the promotion. You've seen this over and over again. You know why they are winning. You've known this for months, maybe even years. The reason is because they are more visible. More people know them. Actually, the right people, more of the right people know about them. Yet you do nothing to change your own visibility. Today I'm gonna be talking to you about why. Because if we're being honest, it's not about being lazy, it's not about not being aware. And for you, it's probably not even about money. And somewhere in this episode, I hope you're gonna see for yourself why you are hesitating from showing up. Because that's the first step of solving this problem. So I'll tell you a story. I had a conversation recently with a woman out called Nicole. She owns a construction company, 10 years in the business, incredible at what she does. She's even won a lot of industry awards, but her business is not growing in a way that matches our expertise. You would actually think that this level of experience, that she would have unlimited clients, maybe even turning clients away, because she's really good. But that's not the case. When I asked her why her company wasn't growing at the rate of our expertise or the quality of the work that she provides, she said something that I think I would never forget. She said, I guess I'm really good at hiding. And at first it sounded funny. When I sat with it, right, it's one of the realest things I've heard on a call in a long time. She wasn't hiding because she wasn't good. She was hiding because she has spent years in an environment where work was supposed to speak for itself. So being visible or making an attempt to be visible to the right people felt wrong. So if that sounds familiar to you, that's what I call the visibility gap. The gap between how good you actually are and how visible you are to the right people. There's a gap.

What The Visibility Gap Really Is

Victoria Odekomaya

Welcome to the Own Your Brand Show. I'm your girl Victoria Odeko Maya. And if you are an executive leader looking to build a personal brand outside of your service, outside of your title, or a service-based business who is tired of being the best kept secret, and maybe you're actually ready to be seen, be known, and chosen, you are in the right place. So let's get

Who This Is For

Victoria Odekomaya

into it. What I realize is this this visibility gap is caused by six different barriers. For one person, it's you know a different barrier, and for the other, it's a completely different one. And for some, it's a combination of several barriers causing that visibility gap. So today I'm gonna walk you through the six barriers causing this visibility gap. And as I do, I want you to

The Six Visibility Barriers

Victoria Odekomaya

listen for yourself to figure out what's causing that gap for you. The first barrier I see all the time is what I call the knowledge gap. This gap is caused by you not knowing what good marketing looks like. This gap happens because you don't know what good marketing to get you visible to the right audience looks like. Not because you're not smart, but because no one ever showed you what to look for. So now every option feels risky, and instead of choosing wrong, you just don't even choose at all. You're like, I'm not getting into this whole marketing thing because there's so many ways to get it done, and you're not sure which way is the right way for you.

Knowledge And Time Barriers

Victoria Odekomaya

The second barrier is what I call the time story. So you tell yourself you don't have the time to show up or do whatever needs to be done to become visible to the right people. And to be fair, you're kind of right. You're busy. I mean, like every one of us is busy, but if you're being real, it's not usually the full story because I don't have time. It's easier to say, I don't know what I'm doing here. So you, you know, you kind of stay where you are. The barrier number three that I see all the time

Trust And Identity Barriers

Victoria Odekomaya

is a trust barrier. With this one, you've already tried so many things. You've already hired a marketing VA, a freelancer, or even a marketing agency. And what comes back doesn't feel like you doesn't represent your level of expertise or quality. And you just don't want to put your name behind what they are producing you. So now you're hesitant. Not because you don't want to invest or you can't invest, but because you don't want to go through that again. You so you know, basically pull everything back and you're holding on to everything again. The fourth barrier is the identity barrier. You don't know how to talk about what you do without feeling like you're bragging. And I get that because I used to feel that way too. But here's the truth: the market does not reward invisible expertise, it rewards those people that are actually visible. So here's the thing: if you're already hearing yourself in more than one of these, you're exactly who I've built this system for. So if I could pause real quickly now here, are you already hearing yourself in one of these barriers? If so, you are exactly what this episode is for. And I have a system to help you, and I will explain that in a little

Uncertainty And Control Barriers

Victoria Odekomaya

bit. Let's go back to barrier number five. The fifth barrier is us uncertainty. You're not sure if this is actually going to work because in your business, results are clear. You do the work, you get the outcome. Marketing doesn't feel like that at first. It's usually slower, it builds over time, and that uncertainty makes you pause. You're like, I'm not quite sure. I don't want to put my name there, right? And finally, the sixth barrier. This is the one most people don't say out loud. This one is the control gap. You don't trust that someone else can represent your work properly. And let me be honest, I completely understand that. Because I used to feel that same way too, until I realized that it wasn't actually the trust, it was that I haven't found the right partner to help me. Now, here's the thing that also really want you to hear. You're probably not dealing with just one of this. Sometimes it's two, three, maybe all of them. And when that happens, it's not confusion, it's paralysis. You keep saying you do something about it, you keep thinking about it, and months go by, and that's exactly where most people get stuck.

Name It Then Make The Move

Victoria Odekomaya

So here's what you're gonna do today. First, be honest with yourself. What is actually stopping you from being visible? Not the easy answer, the real, real one. Second, I want you to understand that these barriers are not permanent, they can change when you have the right support. Because once you name that real problem, you stop trying random things and you start making the right

ICP Barrier Map And Next Steps

Victoria Odekomaya

moves. And that's exactly why I created the ICP barrier map to break all of this down for you so you can grab it in the show notes. Before I close, I want to say this to you. If you've been sitting on this for months, this is your sign. You don't need more time, you don't need more information, you need the right move. If this episode felt a little too accurate, let's talk. Send me a message. I actually read them. Okay, so leave a comment, do that. Fan mail on the podcast platform. And if you're ready to fix this, I mean for real, you can book a consultation link using the link below. In the next episode, I'm gonna be showing you what's actually broken in your marketing. But until then, make sure you keep showing up, you keep owning your brand. I'll see you in the next one.
