Hi, don Thompson here with another podcast for you today, and what I'd like to talk about today is how to build your confidence, or confidence building. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to step through basically some exercises or an exercise that you can use to help build your self-confidence. And self-confidence is a very non-professionals I mean they are professionals but in a way they're not really professional. They come at sports from a different angle. You might say many of them and there seems to be an agreement within that world that excellence matters and also that confidence matters better, regardless of whether they might have the optimum physical attributes that their competitors have. If they have confidence, it will tend to help to promote them to the forefront of their field. Of course, they need to have the physical aspects down, they need to be in physical shape, they need to have the training and so on and so forth, but confidence oftentimes will bring them to a point which will help them to excel or exceed the people they're competing against. Now, I don't think the confidence has to always be about competition, necessarily. That wasn't the point of what I was talking about related to the Olympics, but I do feel that confidence is important in any activity that you're doing, you need to have confidence, and confidence for me, comes from a variety of different sources. I think you need to believe in yourself, you need to believe in your abilities. I think you need to believe in yourself, you need to believe in your abilities and if you have a way to have a positive feedback loop in terms of getting positive feedback related to your abilities, well that's always a good thing. But I think, just to be able to you know, see within yourself that you have intrinsic value, that's a very important thing for all human beings. Assuming that you have a value, that's a very important thing for all human beings. Assuming that you have a certain kind of baseline sense of you know, ethics and morality and mindfulness and based upon that you know you can feel good about yourself, being in the world. What you don't want to have is low self-esteem, and low self-esteem can lead to what you might call non-optimal outcomes. So by building up self-confidence, we can improve the outcomes of our activities. Again, I refer to sports, but it could be any activity. It could be a business deal, it could be something related to work, it could be a relationship, it could be a friendship. Everything that you do can be enhanced by building up your confidence. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to step through an exercise that will help you to picture yourself with very positive attributes, and what we're going to do is go through, really, in essence, a visualization exercise. So let's go ahead and step through this exercise.
Speaker 1:So let's begin by getting grounded. So if you're in a seated position, that's great. You can also be standing, but, you know, have your feet firmly planted on the ground. And what that means as well to be physically grounded, you know is to be mentally grounded. So you want to let go of concepts and worries and really get in touch with your body and your senses and to be in the present moment. This is really what being grounded is all about with your body and your senses, and to be in the present moment. This is really what being grounded is all about.
Speaker 1:So I invite you to close your eyes and imagine yourself standing in front of you, looking back at you. So you're standing in front of yourself, looking back on an image of yourself. Now, bit by bit, I invite you to create a new you in your imagination that has all of the characteristics that you would give to yourself if you had incredible confidence. It could be, for example, that you're very thin, or if you have a different hairstyle, or that you have some other physical attribute that you desire that's achievable, that you can change. It could be anything and also include non-visual characteristics. It could be that your voice is powerful and confident, that your mind is brilliant, that you have, you know, sort of a super sexy aspect to yourself. You can imagine yourself with all these characteristics and qualities and you can give yourself super confidence as a result. So I invite you to watch this image of yourself change before your mind's eye. Just visualize yourself changing before your mind's eye to become this person, this confident you, this more confident you.
Speaker 1:If you already have confidence, then you can have more confidence. You can be as big and bright and bold and powerful as you can imagine. This is a good thing. You want to support that, and you can imagine feeling confidence coursing through the very veins of your body. Of this imaginary, you Feel this rush of invigoration, of control, fearlessness that comes with this confidence. And now this imaginary you even stands with a stance, a stance of great confidence, and it holds your head up in a very bold way, in a lion-eyed way.
Speaker 1:Now, when you're ready, I want you to walk around this imaginary image. Just walk around this imaginary image of yourself, this confident you, this more confident you, and then you can step inside it. You can become it. You can feel yourself experiencing all the sensations of having this amazing confidence, and you can notice how your body changes, how your stance shifts, how even your gaze will suddenly alter to express this volcano of confidence that's coming out from within you. So now imagine that this new you is standing in front of a large audience of admirers. They are cheering and clapping and swooning with adulation and devotion to you and pay particular attention to where the positive feelings you are having are located in your body. Where is it that you are feeling these feelings? The spot is the center. It will be the center. It will be the center, the physical source of your confidence, and you want to feel into this deeply with your bodily awareness. So now I invite you to continue alternating between this visualization of yourself and the feelings of confidence in your body for as long as you wish. This exercise should feel very good.
Speaker 1:I would like to mention that this exercise comes from what's called NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming. Essentially, it's a form of self-hypnosis, and you can come back to this podcast at any time and just repeat this exercise, or you can memorize it and do it without the podcast, of course, but it's a great way to enhance your self-confidence and your self-image. So I invite you to use this NLP approach to you know, help change your life. It can do that. So thanks for listening and I hope this was a helpful podcast for you and I look forward to talking to you soon. Bye-bye, thank you, bye, thank you, thank you.
