Making the Grade Podcast
Making the Grade is an education podcast for current & former teachers to share notes, define success & assess their own happiness in the classroom and beyond. Throughout history in the US, teaching has been an essential profession that supports the next generation. However, as the world continues to evolve, the education system seems to be years behind in many ways.
“Making the Grade” explores the metrics of success in the modern-day classroom with current and former educators. We dive into the challenging circumstances teachers face, & the unrealistic standards that many feel they need to live up to in order to thrive.
Schools are now seeing alarming shortages where jobs used to be highly competitive. Why are teachers leaving the field at an unprecedented rate? How has our view of teachers changed over time? What do educators in the field want us to know about their hopes, hardships & dreams?
The problems in education may seem endless, but so are the possibilities. Listen, laugh, and leave our episodes empowered to define your own success as an educator & an individual. Be sure to leave us a review & subscribe if you like what you hear!

Teacher Training, Montessori Modeling & Classroom Community: a Conversation with Dr. Lisa Kuh
EP 016 | Teacher Training, Montessori Modeling & Classroom Community: a Conversation with Dr. Lisa Kuh
After 6+ months of recording podcasts in different states, Georgia & Christine record in the same room for the 1st time for some great conversation with educator of all trades & author, Dr. Lisa Kuh. Currently practicing in Washington state, Lisa Kuh has over 40 years of experience with young children as an instructional coach, classroom teacher, teacher educator, university professor and researcher, and professional developer. Lisa & Georgia worked together in the classroom (Lisa was Georgia’s mentor!) and they chat about their love and the importance of early childhood education.
Lisa is incredibly accomplished: she has published and presented on the importance of outdoor play and classroom environments for young children, teacher professional development, documentation, Montessori education, anti‐bias education, as well as literacy and math content. She attributes part of her long & successful career in education to the most critical time in a teacher’s journey: her 1st year. You don’t want to miss what Lisa considers the recipe for success on how you CAN have a great year even as a 1st-year teacher!
This episode covers the history of Montessori education, teacher mentoring & “the apprenticeship of observation”, and how educators’ careers are frequently diminished. Also, make sure to hear about how Lisa & her colleague collaborated to write a book - “Thinking Critically About Environments for Young Children and Complementary Curriculum Approach: Transform Your Practice Through Intentional Teaching!”
