Ah, an NBC ad from 1987 for Miami Vice. I remember friends actually delaying on Friday nights until Miami Vice aired. A cool show. I still love it.
Well indeed I am back. And a big “thank you” for all the listens. Ratings are way up! I can’t thank you enough.
With all the AI talk, wars on all our global corners, and friends seemingly at each other's political throats … I do remember when times were … Well, let’s face it. Things weren’t easier oh so many years ago. There were plenty of challenges.
Well, no AI to solve all your problems. No IMDB to get all your trivia while watching a movie. No GPS to get you to everywhere on the globe. So, yes, I guess things were simpler. But they were also, honestly, hard. Many times it is really hard.
We just accept all the modern conveniences and then complain about the speed that life is pitched at us … and I admit, that may be the biggest challenge … just the act of adaptation to the modern world. Heck, even the third-world is modernizing (for better or worse) at a rate that was once thought impossible just a few years ago. Okay, say 40 years ago. Not that long in the big scope of life.
Then we peer back in our less used neurons and often have a memory … but it is fuzzy … and we can’t seem to put our finger on what mental work was once required of us.
So let me take you back.
This time, to 1980. London. When those London cab drivers had to memorize and pass a test just to drive a cab. What did they have to memorize? Why the city, of course. 607 square miles of it. Okay, maybe not all of it, but I live in a small town and about all I can do is (improvise).
So this audio, which demonstrates the term “deskilling” is one we should take note of. Back to London in 1980, you had to take classes, pass a map route BY MEMORY, to become a London Taxi Driver.
Take a listen. (insert audio)
Ouch! Try that. And think about this … he failed the exam! They actually made a movie about the subject, in 1979, called The Knowledge.
Deskilling is happening. Modern technology happens fast, but deskilling sort of just creeps along, eroding knowledge, folklore, and things that bind us together.
Don’t think so? Well, dancing is fading. Kids don’t play patticake anymore. Kids are not even riding bicycles … they opt for those battery scooters! And adults? Hey, we got Tesla … which is going to make driving a lost art. Safer maybe, but a lost art. Sort of like reading a newspaper and actually talking … you know, to real people. Don’t get me started on writing a letter. *What are those, anyway?”
Like I said … slow, but it is happening.
I’ll leave you with about a minute of food for thought. I found this on Youtube … and evidently a lot of people have forgotten how to write, because there are many Youtube shorts of people reading the same text but with different graphics … so the youth, while they can’t write, can use AI and post trivia.
This is our new world.
Still, for my older listeners out there … Think about what this audio is saying.

Missing the old days, yet? I am. But yet I cannot build a wagon wheel.
Think about THAT!
More later …
