We are actually fuxing with compassion today. How do we make space for compassion when we think we already are compassionate? In this season, I am reminded of the necessity for forgiveness, compassion, and reconciliation, mostly for the people who don't think they deserve it from me. This is certainly a new concept  I've never considered - the self-punishment that others may inflict upon themselves, when they know they have wounded us or caused us injury. The Queen lays out this framework in Chapter 12 of Sisters of the Yam, The Joy of Reconciliation. Reconciliation, a beautiful word from the Catholic Sacrament where we confess our sins, and reconcile with the Church since you caused it injury due to your sin. What do you do when confession of sins and reconciliation may not be forthcoming. This is how I feel these days as I assess my relationship with my ex-husband. I am confident that on a cellular level he knows he has wronged me grievously, however, I don't anticipate any confession nor reconciliation. So what is an Uppity Black Woman to do, as my inability to fully forgive him for his acts, colors how I engage with others. Thus I contemplate how I can demonstrate my forgiveness, both inside and out. I can start by committing to no longer referring to him as "mu***f***a" or "that ni**a". I feel that those are easy ones to commit to, or perhaps not, as those two words roll off my tongue just as easy as the words and, but, or or. Cultivating compassion, like love, is an act akin to work. And that work at the moment is hard and laborious, but the more I do it, the easier it becomes. So in this season of hope, joy, peace, renewal, and fresh starts, I am open to creating space in my heart and am willing to be one-directional with my compassion.
