The Crew Talks About Cover And Tribute Bands, Music Talk, Round 2 Of Commercial Jingle Battle, Age Game, And Other Nonsense
Yeah! Welcome to the human trace show. I'm Derek hanging out with Abe and Kate today. Beautiful, beautiful day. With a little Molly crew. What's going on, guys? Yep. Fire! You know, I start off with some Molly Crew. Why? Going to see Deja Crew. Uh again.
SPEAKER_05Uh we talked about that last summer. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Finally going to see them. Nice.
SPEAKER_05I forgot all about it until like when is that Saturday? Friday. Friday. Friday. At the Elks? Yeah. Nice. I like that theater actually. It's cool.
SPEAKER_04They got a lot of cool cover bands. Everything from fucking Barry Manilo to Mount Lake Crew. You know, like it's pretty wide. But you never hear the shit.
SPEAKER_05That is what it's it's crazy because we're getting to that point now where like the original stars, I'll give you an example. Paul McCartney was on the season finale of SNL.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, he sounded shaky. He sounds shaky, bro. Just old and shitty.
SPEAKER_05Oh, so it's getting to the point now where like our, you know, uh bands that we liked can't do it anymore. Even even Motley Crue, like, what's his name? Uh uh, not Nikki, uh uh uh Vince can't really do it anymore.
SPEAKER_04Well, he went through a really bad day.
SPEAKER_05Right, right. And so it's it's getting to the point where it's like I'd rather us into a cover band who's gonna be a little bit more. Well, okay, now that's the thing too. Like, like, like, are they gonna do it better?
SPEAKER_04You go and see, oh man, that's nostalgic, dude. I'm watching there's fucking Vince Neal, there's Paul McCartney. Right. But man, it sucks. It sucks. Or do you go watch some 25-year-old that sounds like they did the Fab Four, you know, yeah, and you listen to the Fab Four and like just uh You know, okay, so I gotta close my eyes, you know. Okay, but they nail it. They nail it, and and that's you know, what are you going out for? I'm going out to hear some good music of the shit that I like. If it's played by someone else, or I'm just gonna go to the show.
SPEAKER_05You're just like, ah, fuck it. Or I'm just gonna go see who I like. I'd rather go out to listen to the music that I like.
SPEAKER_04And the tickets, you know, 20 bucks. These guys even dress up like crew, they got wigs and the whole deal, dude.
SPEAKER_05Do you remember when they did the uh the the Fab Four? No, it wasn't Fab Four, it was another Beatles band versus the Rolling Stones band. And Jed and I were sitting there and and they did it at the at the what's the name Fidney Toyota Center, but it was like maybe a quarter of the stadium or the area. It wasn't a lot. And the Rolling Stone guys did better, even though I like the Beatles better than Rolling Stones. The Rolling Stone cover band played way better. They were tighter, they were more on their things. I felt the Beatles guys were lacking a bit. So in that point, it's like, well, shit, I would have voted more going back to Battles, I would have voted more for Rolling Stones because that day, because they they were playing better. And so I think to me is like Access TV.
SPEAKER_04They used to have uh the Battle of the Bands kind of thing. It wasn't Battle of the Bands, but it was uh Remember Dance Off, Pants Off? Yeah, this was like cover bands and every week they'd have like a journey band and a fucking crew band, uh fanhaling, you know, just different cover bands. It was really cool. And you know, the big difference of cover band or a tribute band, you know, one just dresses up you know, they look nothing like it, but they play the music perfect. One's like, I'm gonna wear this goofy ass wig and fucking jump around, you know, and act like 'em. Right. But I love that shit, and one of my favorites is Pink Floyd. You know, I love Pink Floyd. But you go see these cover bands of Pink Floyd now, they're so good. Yeah. They sound like the Pink Floyd that we know from the 70s, 80s, and you know, up to Paul's 90s and shit. Way better than Pink Floyd would play it right now. But you're not seeing Pink Floyd, so people are like, Oh, you're fucking great, man, go watch some stupid. It's like that. To see it live played by anybody, it's pretty damn impressive.
SPEAKER_05You know, it's like that Zeppelin cup cover band, Greta von Fleet. You know.
SPEAKER_04I've seen that dude in the news lately. Greta von Fleet guy? Yeah. Why singer? Why? He's a bit of a prick, and well, he came out gay, of course. And of course, of course.
SPEAKER_05Well, I mean, I think we all got it, buddy.
SPEAKER_04But then he's like, you know, at first they're like, oh, we never really heard of Zeppelin and shit. It's like, come on, dude. Come on, dude.
SPEAKER_05You know, like you'd be better off going, dude. The yeah, of course they're an inspiration.
SPEAKER_04Well, then they finally embraced it, and but he's like, Oh no, we're trying our own thing with it, and he just really fruited out and whatever, dude. I mean, that's fine.
SPEAKER_05But it's like talking to my dad.
SPEAKER_04No, I mean, he's just trying to like pull that whole thing card. Yeah, just that's fine.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, bro, yeah.
SPEAKER_04We love it. Right, right. It's very he had a fucking great voice and shit. We don't need to make it into anything political straight gay or anything. Play your music, and that's what we're all.
SPEAKER_05You guys were great. We're not saying you're gonna get compared. I'm sorry, you're gonna it's gonna happen, but who cares?
SPEAKER_04But they were 17, 18 years old when they started the shit. They weren't even able to drink and take the drugs out that you should be taking to play that music.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, not to say they weren't, but and I go back to like every you you played in bands, I've played in bands, and you always knew like when you were playing somewhere, whatever your set was, you always throw a cover in there of something. You just you just give the crowd. And we were nineties we were nineties punk kids, so we were either playing a green day song with our originals, we were throwing in a Blink one eighty two song.
SPEAKER_04What's it cause you just Well, you play a couple your own, they're like cool, you know. You get your crowd that yeah, fucking love their songs, you know. Well, of course, we see you at our practice every week, and you have your group, you kind of you hang out or people, right? And then, but man, they want to hear a fucking slayer, you know. Every fourth song we gotta throw in something just get them all back to you, you know.
SPEAKER_05Right, right. So there's something to be said with like tributes and covers and all that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and I I don't shit on them like others, but we're gonna see Deja Crew. Nice. And it's funny, I mean, the drummer, he's probably fucking Tommy's age, you know. And probably looks more like him now than when he puts his long wig and acts like he's from Shout at the Devil tour. Right. You know, they do that whole fucking look with the stripes and all that shit.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. Dude, have you seen the video of them giving uh uh uh Nicky shit about like how his hand doesn't leave that fret?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05When they're playing live now, like his his hand is in the same position the whole time that he's not actually playing like he used to. I mean, I don't know. Yeah, I know.
SPEAKER_04Come on. I mean you gotta really do is hit open E.
SPEAKER_05The only one still doing it, fucking Rolling Stones. Stones, yeah. They're in their early 90s and they're still out there and he's still all fucking.
SPEAKER_04What would be a good Rolling Stones uh tribute band name? Oh Emotional Rescue. That's good. I was thinking like Tumbling Rocks. Oh, there you go. You know, I was just playing more off the Rolling Stones. Right, right, right. You know, a lot of guys Yeah, I mean you could be Ruby Tuesdays or something, but Tumbling Rocks.
SPEAKER_05Tumbling Rocks, maybe uh uh the the flipping uh flint. I don't know.
SPEAKER_04I saw the Stones Live in 1998.
SPEAKER_03And um the opening band was Third Eye Blind.
SPEAKER_04Third Eye Blind, really open for shit. I love Third Eye Blind, but they were cool, man. Dude, Third Eye Blind's great. How's it gonna be?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_05Is that the wish you would get back from that ledge?
SPEAKER_04That just reminds me of that fucking movie though.
SPEAKER_05Uh yes man, or yes, yes man, or yes, whatever. Yeah, yeah, yeah. With Jim Carrey. Yes, yes.
SPEAKER_04With Louis Guzman out there, he's like, fucking Wish you would step out from that ledge, my friend.
SPEAKER_05There's a if you like all this shit, there's a channel, and I gotta find it. I feel stupid now. My buddy Johnny, shout out Johnny. Um Johnny. Johnny, he showed he showed me this uh uh channel on YouTube where this guy breaks down like how all these rock bands and everything got started from not so much 70s, more like my age, like 80s, 90s bands, Third Eye Blind, Bad Religion, uh uh who's the one that's coming back out again, uh Social D. Like all these bands and how they got started, what got them big, you know, their fall, and everything. And he does a cool little mini like behind the music. They're like 30 minutes. Oh I'll pick one or two a day when I'm working and throw it on and just listen to it. And he goes into and he goes like really behind the baseball, not more like, oh, this was a drama, more like this is the label they signed with, this was their number one thing. This song charted at this, and this is what got them to this, and then gives you a little background about the band.
SPEAKER_04I love those uh document like rock docs and stuff. Yes, rock docs. There's a chili pepper one on. Yeah, dude, it is it's really good. So good. Oh, you like Jeff, dude, and it it really breaks it down. I didn't realize how long they were friends, right?
SPEAKER_05And then they didn't make it about the band, they made it about the guitarist that one dude, and that one dude, and just how amazing I can't think of his name right now.
SPEAKER_04Neither can I Artemis or something. It was like a something weird like that. But I didn't even know he was part of the group because I didn't get into him until Blood Sugar Sex Magic. Right. And then Cal Fred Casey. Like Mother's Milk and Shit too, but after I got there, then I went back, you know, because they had fuck, they started in like '84. Right. Right. And Anthony Keatis wasn't even a singer. And they're like, I'll let him do one song, and he made that rap and just And they loved it. And they loved it. So they had two bands going and he was MCing for them.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he was like so great. I recommend that one Chili Peppers on uh Netflix. Yeah, I think it is. Another one, too. I recommend, and it's a little older, it's like two or three years ago, but it's on um either Apple Music or HBO Max, I don't remember. Um, and I wore my Beastie Boys t-shirt this weekend, but they they did, yeah, at Kate's uh baby shower, and none of none of her friends are like, Who's that? You better not beasties. No, Bridger came up to me. Shout out, Bridger. He came up to me and he's like, dude, good job. He's like uh he's like, hey dude, nice shirt. Look at those juice. I was like, what? He's like, nice juice on your shirt. No, it was awesome. But the Beastie Boys uh doc that they have on Apple Music, it's so good.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it must be Apple because I don't know.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, because it's both of them. It's Adam Young and uh no, Adam Yonk died, right? Who's the one the the two surviving ones Mike D. And they and they talk about they go from the beginning with them in Brooklyn and growing up and all that.
SPEAKER_04Maybe I've watched one of them because there's a few out. I did watch it.
SPEAKER_05Dude, it was so good working with like Russell Simmons and then coming up with Run D. I had no idea they came up with Run DMC. Like they were doing all this shit, dude. It was so open up for Madonna. Like I was listening to Beastie Boys last week.
SPEAKER_04Which album or Check Your Head. Check your head, okay. But not the hit like what you want. I listened to that boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. You know, they when they started doing their own music.
SPEAKER_05Crazy shit, yeah.
SPEAKER_04And weird shit, like I'd love I'd love to did their own music. And at the time you really didn't even know that, you know? Because you just it was I grew up with uh not checking about the illness uh the one with fucking licensed illness with fucking uh you know the Paul Revere and all that shit. And that was just strictly like white boy rap that came in. And it was like, oh the fuck, this is hot, dude. Like what you want, girls. You didn't really like realize that they did their own music until well, you got Paul's boutique came out and then check your head. You know, that was all sabotages all them and sabotages. That's when you start realizing, oh, these suckers are they were doing some good shit. Yeah. And and the mixes they use, like dan dan dan dan. You know, they use a lot of old zaplin and all Beastie Boys, man.
SPEAKER_05Let's give it up for the fucking. Great band, like great, great, you know what? Great binder of people, because I knew punk heads, I knew metal heads, I knew rap dudes, groovers, everybody loved fucking Beastie Boys. You go to house parties and everybody was playing Beastie Boys. And then you're like, shit, that was that was the shit. But again, Hello Nasty to this day when Jen and I we drive to Vegas, we drive, and it's like, let's throw on Hello Nasty, and we'll listen to that from like start to finish.
SPEAKER_04That's great.
SPEAKER_05And it's a good good album.
SPEAKER_04You can listen anything from fucking fight for your right to party, you know, all the way up to sure shot and all that. I mean, just it was just they have a wide range for for a white boy rap group for a white boy rap group. They really explore music.
SPEAKER_05Mm's sixth, seventh album. One that was just a few years ago. He did an album, and it's uh a uh an homage to their because it's the the one with the back of the tailwing of the plane.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05And he did that for his album. That was a license. And it was uh yeah, and it's it's like homage to that, and he did that for his cover album. So it's like everybody, even the greats, MM is like there's no there's no Eminem without Me C Boys. No, or chocolate or shell. Who's that new dude right now that's out rapping White Boy? He's I don't know. I gotta find him. He's been coming up on my ball dude, and he raps kind of slower, and he wears like collared shirts with like uh uh uh sweaters all the time. I gotta find him the next time it's on my phone. Prom? Prom. Not prom. Prom. Yeah, I don't know. It's gonna be some new dude that's Pam?
SPEAKER_04Like Toby Wong. Pam? Are you are you saying Pam? No. Pam. Prof. Pan. Prof. This dude. Oh, I've seen that guy actually. Prof.
SPEAKER_05He's very uh Professor something or whatever. He's got a look. It's a little weird. He's got a look. Yeah, it's it and I saw some stuff come out. I was like, okay, alright, I'll listen to it. Like, I'll throw you on there and see. I'll throw a little rap in the mix of all that. Going back to cover band.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Well, I was just thinking, where the fuck are we talking about? Cover band, I'm going to see the crew thing, and I dig it, man.
SPEAKER_05I love it. It'll be a fun time, especially because you should be in town and enjoying your shit that you like. I'm glad that freaking PD and Press Cuts bring in more shit like that.
SPEAKER_04So I said they do covers of everything. Olivia, Newton, John, Madonna, did you do the uh Ringo?
SPEAKER_05Because I know the Ringo thing just happened. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04It was here again? It was here again.
SPEAKER_05But we kind of twice it. We did it no once. We did that, and then the turn. Oh, the happy together. Yeah. Young girl, get out of my mind. I wanted to see uh uh Frankie Valley, you know, sitting on a thing lip singing.
SPEAKER_04But I haven't been to a show forever, so I'm gonna treat this like a real concert. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05And you guys should get a limo. Yeah, go out there. You know, if you had like a DD that could drive, you know, hop you off, pick you up, you know. When's Vinny getting ready for that, bro?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I know.
SPEAKER_05Tell him he'll make a hundred bucks on a Saturday night when C16. He comes, drops us off. Not no more. Like, and then he comes, picks us up afterwards.
SPEAKER_04Not no more, because like back in her day, we would need a D D a DD more. Now we're just like, ah, and it's not gonna go. Or we're adults now, we'll just Uber home or something. Right.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you guys don't really go anywhere.
SPEAKER_04No. And if we do, mom doesn't drink. Yeah. So that's a bit more.
SPEAKER_05We'll pull up and we're in the car like rock, paper, scissors, shit. All right, you're drinking. And then all that means is that I only get to have four beers instead of you know, like ten. Six more. I wanted six more after this, but fine, I'll have four beers. That's cool. Or I'll trade it all in and I'll be like, okay, instead of four beers, two cocktails, and then I'll start driving it so. Yeah, but then with the dinner, with the dinner in between then, okay? So I'll be right back.
SPEAKER_04And also, well, we plan on staying until midnight. It's only 8 30. It's only we're getting it.
SPEAKER_06I'm gonna have one more, right?
SPEAKER_04We'll get out of here by nine.
SPEAKER_05But yeah, dude, we need to get ready to start chauffeuring people. Or we we we buy a limo, we buy an old 80s limo, fix it up, and we have Vinny just once he's turned 16, start driving everybody, bro. Start making some money. And then we karaoke machine in it.
SPEAKER_04I gotta get him a go-kart. I mean, he's gonna learn how to drive. I can't teach him a limo. Hey, you're 16, man. Here's your keys, bro. Got a fucking limo. So fuck when I get in here.
SPEAKER_05My dad started teaching. My dad would pick us up from middle school, eighth grade. In a limited grade. And my dad no. Oh. Yeah. Yeah, of course. In a limo.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_05And my dad would pick us up and he would let us drive home from school. And he taught us at 13.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you could let me get in the driver's seat until I had my permit already. Really?
SPEAKER_04Get away with that shit back then.
SPEAKER_02Dude, we were driving, take him to a parking lot. I had I had to have my permit. My mom wouldn't even let me look at this driver's seat.
SPEAKER_05No, dude, we my dad at 13. My nephew Liam's driving now. He could drive a stick.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that's impressive.
SPEAKER_05Because my dad's like, you're gonna learn, dude. I'm gonna make you that's a anti-theft deterrent, dude, if I've ever seen one. But you do that. So, okay, true though. Million dollar idea. We get Vinny starting now, we get him driving. Okay. We get this limo, and then we do a dispensary tour where we take people to each dispensary here in town, let them get baked, and you drive them around, and you take them to a restaurant at the end, and you let them eat their brains out and collect that cash. 100 bucks ahead.
SPEAKER_04Well, that's something that we could do. Vinny don't need to be involved in driving a limo at 16 and a bunch of stoners.
SPEAKER_05Right, right, right.
SPEAKER_04We just buy a limo and do that, you say.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you could, but you're gonna have to have four beers in between.
SPEAKER_04Oh, so Vinny drives Right. Okay, he's a he's a part-timer. He's a part-timer, part-timer.
SPEAKER_02If you guys did it, you'd be getting high with them and stuff.
SPEAKER_04No, no, we don't. How come the car isn't moved? Because you're the driver. Oh fuck, I should get up front. Yeah. But just let me call my boy. I I mean, yeah, there's business ideas out there. Yeah. But storing that one out there. Driving around to all the dispensaries. There's two. Okay, we'll we'll be in Nirvana here in three minutes.
SPEAKER_05So there's three. Anywhere else you want to go? There's three, and then you take them up to like Hottonwood and you do or or a vineyard one. I think they have those. I think they have the bus that takes you to all the vineyards and cottonwood.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's a bus.
SPEAKER_04It's not a limo. Paint the limo, it looks like a fucking wine bottle laying on the side.
SPEAKER_05There you go. Or we have one with the hot tub in the back. And a karaoke machine. Yeah, hot tub, limo.
SPEAKER_04We drive around with people hanging in a fucking hot tub. No, the liability on that shit would be so bad. So we put the hot tub inside.
SPEAKER_05We put the hot tub inside. But it's just small, homemade. It's shag carpeting, so all the shag carpeting gets all wet.
SPEAKER_04Definitely shag carpeting. Yeah, but it gets all wet and it's just looks like your fucking jacket from your date.
SPEAKER_05I still to this day, sidebar here, do uh bathroom remodels where there's still carpet in the bathrooms on people's places. I'd like grossest. But you can't have it. No, why would you it's the grossest thing to have carpet in a bathroom? I well, I understand.
SPEAKER_04It's wet and it gets but if you do it right. There's no doing it right.
SPEAKER_05It's all wrong.
SPEAKER_04No, you know how it's wrong. It's all wrong. How's it right? It's really cool when I go to like Airbnb, they have it. I go fuck it on. I'm on my carpet. You're rubbing your butt like a dog. And it's not mine. It's doing it right. You're all flicking. We had carpet and bathrooms a couple times. Really? Oh, dude. Rentals that we had.
SPEAKER_05We talked about you the other day. We're doing a job in Chino in Bright Star.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah. I was out there off Crow. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05We were driving by, we're like, we're always come out here to party with Derek and Wendy.
SPEAKER_04We had a killer party out there.
SPEAKER_05Dude, those are always the and I remember that house too.
SPEAKER_04Remember my birthday party. I do. It's my birthday today, dude. Happy birthday. Happy birthday? Really?
SPEAKER_05Shut up.
SPEAKER_04Yesterday. No. Shut up. Well, by the time it comes out.
SPEAKER_02By the time this comes out.
SPEAKER_05Oh, by the time it comes out. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04True. Well, because I think my birthday is next in next Tuesday or Wednesday.
SPEAKER_05Mine's in three weeks.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yours is right there too.
SPEAKER_05I'm starting to go fund me for my uh vacation, so you know. Alright. There you go. I gotcha. Yeah. Abe's birthday, you know. For Australia. For not Australia. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You better start a GoFundMe for your medical bills if you find any of those creepy creatures.
SPEAKER_05That's not gonna happen.

I think that we gotta stick to products products you think yep but those are two functions you've already done things that aren't products though what um no we did some service uh well no actually everything's been kind of products uh or not products but like restaurant you know uh babyback ribs chilies mentos oscarmeyer kick hat folgers products or something they're all kind of products not fucking insurance companies or yeah what is general sell you but the jingle aspect but that was it the aspect going back again to the jingle okay when someone creates a good jingle those are fun those are honorary mentions right there okay we can do that okay let's go I'm gonna start with this one okay you do that I'm gonna go with we're going with this one you weren't too hard you ate too much the cheesecake made you have a stomach here in this message from old speedy alchos blap flap fizz fizz oh what a relief it is fizz oh that's a rememberable speedy there you go hmm that's a tough one because I didn't really get fine like a medicine one it had to be medicine okay if we're gonna still stick with the product but kind of jingle and kind of kid wise the my buddy jingle my buddy my buddy because that was and and and kid sisters the same same buddy my buddy my buddy go he goes my buddy my buddy my buddy I'll take I know my buddy we like to climb up a tree I think that's my oh yeah so we can start the vote my buddy you never have my buddy I don't know what my buddy is my buddy was a doll that you got show me a phone and then you gotta show kid sister so boys had kid sister yeah so we have a classic plop plop fizz fizz against my buddy I'm gonna vote first I'm going with my buddy okay I'm gonna go with my buddy too my buddy I kinda feel my buddy my buddy my buddy that one has to go through that kind of has to go through okay all right last round I'm going with this one okay they got a million toys and toys that I can play with I don't want to go up I'm a toys we got the best for so much less you really flip it lips we get it video games it's bigger toys toys are rushed baby I don't wanna grow up because if I did toys are rushed more gate more toys boom all right what do you got what do you got trying to go through my list here if we're gonna go classic with that I'm gonna go to song oh everything I see becomes a tootsie roll everything I see becomes a tootsie roll to me man what a great one right I can I because I'm trying to I was going like what plays with that you never heard of the Tootsie Roll one? Oh so you know there was the owl the how many licks to takes a Tootsie Roll pop but they had this the world looks mighty good to me the Tootsie Rolls a roll whatever it is I think I see becomes a Tootsie Roll to me.
SPEAKER_04Tootsie Roll Pop That's a good chocolate chip man Tootsie Roll becoming love with you whatever it is I think I see becomes a Tootsie Roll to me dude that's a banger bro dude like that one deserves to be in there but I don't know that it beats Toys R Us in my opinion but man it's a it beats others that are in there that beats others you know but it's just the way it was matched up right right right so to me I gotta stick with I think Toys R Us is an all-time banger. I'm sticking with Toys R Us for my vote you're probably sticking with Tootsie Roll I'm gonna stick with Tootsie Roll and it comes down to Kate and whatever it is it is I think I like the Tootsie Roll one better Tootsie Roll wins it Toys R Us gone it's anyone else they could have won but no that's how it is that was a tough one that is because I love we me and Wendy were just singing Tootsie Roll the other night because we were going through them.
