The Stanford Prison Experiment—one of psychology’s most infamous “what-were-they-thinking” moments. Conducted in 1971 by Dr. Philip Zimbardo, it was supposed to last two weeks but was shut down in just six days because things went horribly wrong (or incredibly right, depending on how you measure “insight into human nature”).
