The Enfield Poltergeist was one of Britain’s most infamous hauntings, kicking off in 1977 in a sleepy council house in Enfield, North London—because of course it did. The Hodgson family, particularly 11-year-old Janet, found themselves smack in the middle of what can only be described as a paranormal circus: furniture flipping itself over, knocking sounds echoing through walls, toys flying across rooms, and even Janet allegedly levitating like something out of The Exorcist. Naturally, the press and paranormal investigators swarmed in, including Maurice Grosse and Guy Lyon Playfair from the SPR, who became convinced the activity was genuine. Skeptics, though, pointed fingers at mischievous kids and attention-seeking chaos. But whether it was real or just a teenage prank gone nuclear, the case remains a ghost-hunting classic—equal parts creepy, controversial, and absolutely bonkers.
