On Christmas Eve 1945, a house fire tore through the Sodder family home in Fayetteville, West Virginia. George and Jennie Sodder escaped with four of their nine children… but five were never seen again. Officials claimed the missing children died in the blaze — except no bones, teeth, or remains were ever found. Not even a scrap.

As the years went on, the case got weird. A missing ladder. Cut phone lines. Sightings of the children reported in other states. And decades later, a photo arrived in the post claiming to show one of the missing boys as an adult. The Sodders never believed their children died in the fire, and neither do a lot of people today.

Accident, abduction, or something far darker? The Sodder children remain one of America’s most chilling unsolved mysteries — a case that refuses to stay buried.
