I'm Dr. Nassim Ebrahimi, and welcome to Becoming My Stronger Me, a podcast designed to help you become stronger in mind, body, and heart. In season two, the mental performance series, we'll explore the intricate relationship between mental performance, sports excellence, leadership, and personal growth to help you become your stronger you. Today we're talking about a topic that feels especially relevant as the year winds down. How to reflect, recharge, and refocus as we approach the holidays and the start of a new year. This time of year can feel like a whirlwind, can it? The holidays are full of celebrations, family gatherings, and travel, and it's easy to feel pulled in a hundred directions. Add in the pressure of reflecting on the past year and setting goals for the next, and it can quickly become overwhelming. But here's the thing: the end of the year is an incredible opportunity to pause, take stock, and set ourselves up for success in the year ahead. Today we're going to explore three key steps to do just that. One, reflect on your year with intention. Two, recharge physically, mentally, and emotionally. And three, refocus your goals to enter the new year with clarity and purpose. By the end of this episode, you'll have a clear plan to close out the year feeling accomplished and energized. So grab a pencil and piece of paper and let's dive in. The first step to ending the year strong is to reflect on the past 12 months. Reflection isn't just about looking back, it's about learning and growing from your experiences. Research in positive psychology shows that taking time to reflect helps you process your accomplishments, identify areas for growth, and build resilience. It's like doing a mental inventory. You're taking stock of what worked, what didn't, and what you want to carry forward. Here are a few simple but powerful ways to reflect on your year. Celebrate your wins. Start by recognizing what you accomplished this year, no matter how big or small. Did you hit a personal record in your sport? Did you improve your time management? Did you build stronger relationships with a teammate or coach? Write it all down. Here are some prompts to consider. What am I most proud of from this year? What challenges did I overcome? Celebrating these wins helps you see how far you've come and boosts your confidence as you head into the new year. The second category here is to learn from challenges. Reflection isn't just about the positives, it's also about learning from what didn't go as planned. Maybe you fell short of a goal or struggled with consistency. That's okay. Use those moments as opportunities to grow. Here are a couple questions to consider. What were my biggest challenges this year? What did I learn from them? The third step here is to identify patterns. Take a step back and look for patterns. Did certain habits or mindsets help you succeed? Were there recurring obstacles that got in your way? Recognizing patterns helps you understand what's working and what might need to change. Here are a couple questions to consider for this category. What habits or routines helped me thrive? What held me back and how can I address it? Once you've reflected, the next step is to recharge. The holidays are a great time to slow down, rest, and replenish your energy so that you can start the new year feeling refreshed. So let's talk about the physical recharge. Athletes know the importance of recovery, but this time of year, it's easy to forget to rest. Use this downtime to let your body heal from the wear and tear of the season. Prioritize sleep, hydration, and gentle movement like yoga or walking to restore your energy. If you're used to intense training, think of this as a reset period. Active recovery doesn't mean you're doing nothing. It's about giving your body the care it needs to perform better in the long run. And as for mental recharge, the holidays can be mentally draining with schedules packed full of commitments. Give yourself permission to set boundaries and say no to things that don't serve your well-being. For example, set aside some time for mindfulness or journaling. Even five to ten minutes a day can help quiet your mind and reduce stress. Focus on what brings you joy during this season, whether it's spending time with loved ones, reading, or simply relaxing. And lastly, let's talk about the emotional recharge. This time of year can stir up a lot of emotions. Gratitude, nostalgia, even stress. Acknowledge how you're feeling and allow yourself to process those emotions. Gratitude journaling is a simple but powerful way to shift your mindset. Write down three things you're grateful for each day, and it's a great reminder of the positives in your life, even during busy or stressful times. We've talked about reflection and recharging. Now let's talk about refocusing. After reflecting and recharging, it's time to think about the year ahead. What do you want to achieve? How do you want to grow? Goal setting here is key, but the goals you set need to be both clear and meaningful. Think about what truly matters to you. Don't just set goals because they sound impressive. Now you've probably heard this before, but it's worth repeating. Make your goals smart, specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. For example, instead of saying, I want to get better at soccer, you might say, I want to improve my penalty kick accuracy by 10% in the next three months. And from there, create a plan. Break your big goals down into smaller, actionable steps. For example, if your goal is to improve endurance, your plan might include weekly running sessions and tracking your progress. And remember, life happens and plans change. So stay flexible and stay open to adjusting your goals as needed while staying focused on your long-term vision. So, what questions can you ask yourself here? What are my top three priorities for the new year? And what small steps can I take to move toward those goals? And before you wrap up your goal setting, ask yourself: why do these goals matter to me? Your why is your anchor, and it helps you stay motivated and focused even when things get tough. As we approach the end of the year, I want to leave you with this thought. You don't have to have everything figured out right now. The goal isn't to be perfect, the goal is to grow. By reflecting on your year, recharging your energy, and refocusing your goals, you're setting yourself up for a fresh, intentional start. I hope today's episode gave you some tools to reflect on your journey, recharge your energy, and refocus your goals as we head into the new year.
