Welcome to Travel Chat with Ashley and Emily. I'm Ashley from Ashley Good Round. And I'm Emily with Emily Eats and Explores. We am at a little bit Travel Channel, a little bit Bravo. So grab your favorite beverage and let's go. Welcome back to Travel Chat with Ashley and Emily. I'm Ashley and we have a really good episode this week because Emily went to Hawaii and she went to some places I haven't been. So I'm super excited. I don't even think we've talked about your trip to Hawaii really. So let's get into it. And you went to, I think you went to Maui and Oahu. Yes, I went. Okay, you guys are going to find this so funny. But I feel like Hawaii is one of those places where like, People will either say, like, the name of the town or the island. So, like, I knew I was going to Honolulu. But if you asked me before I actually went which island that was on, like, all of that was so confusing to me. So, like, I feel like people will– like, I feel like most people will say Honolulu. But, like, Oahu is the island. And then, like, people say Maui. And I was like, is Maui– a town Maui is also the island and then I was not well versed on my Hawaii geography before I actually went but now I know that there are obviously the multiple islands and I think I know most of the main cities that are on the islands so Yes, I was in Hawaii. We were in Honolulu for a few days and then we went to Maui. And the reason why I went on this trip was because my co-mate of honor, she was there for a conference. So she's a doctor. So she had a medical conference in Hawaii. How freaking cool. So she got like most of the things covered there, which is so nice. So she was like, okay, I'm just going to, you know, extend this as much as I can. So she went early. She went to– is it Kauai? Kauai. Yeah, Kauai. That's how you say it. Okay. I also probably going to butcher all these pronunciations. I apologize. She went to Kauai with her husband. Then she had her conference, which was on Oahu in Honolulu on Waikiki Beach. And then I came at like the end of the conference. So– Very fun. We were– I flew into Honolulu. I actually got a direct flight on Delta from Boston. Guys, I did not even know these existed. It was a long flight. I think it was like– I think it said it was going to be like 11 and a half hours and it ended up being less than that. I want to say it was like around 10. But how cool because I always thought that– I don't know. Maybe they've had these from Boston for a while and I just like never really looked into it. Hawaii has never really been on my radar. I don't know why. Like I have not been that person that's like, oh my God, I want to go Hawaii so bad. Like everybody that I know that's been to Hawaii has really, really loved it. It's just like not a place that I ever like really dreamed about going or like had high on my bucket list. And I don't– like there was no rhyme or reason why, but– I just, yeah, so I didn't know a ton, a ton about it, but I was always like, oh my God, I'm going to have to probably stop in whatever, Los Angeles or like San Diego. I don't know, something like that. But the direct flight on Delta, so nice. So I landed. Those direct flights, it's like it slaps when you can get a direct flight. And I guess it's the long, right? They said it. And it must be longer than New York. They said it was the longest direct flight for the U.S., like for a domestic flight. So Boston to Honolulu. Because I was thinking, oh, maybe it's New York. But no, I guess it is Boston. It does make sense that it would be Boston. Boston to Honolulu is the longest direct flight domestically, which is so fun. So that's a fun thing to do. Just tell people. I think it also depends on which coast you're on. Because us East Coasters, we can get to Europe quicker than we get to Hawaii. Right. And that's what was so surprising to me. Like, we met, like, a ton of amazing people. Like, everybody– this is what I learned. The people in Hawaii are so fucking nice, the people that live there. But also the people that travel there are also just so fucking nice, too. I don't know if everybody is just freaking happy because they're in Hawaii, but I would say almost everybody that we met was from California, and they're like, oh, yeah, we just come here all the time. They're like, oh, it's like a five-hour flight, whatever. We come all the time. Yeah, and you can fly south. You can fly Southwest, you can fly. Yeah. So you can get really cheap flights from the West Coast, Hawaii. Yes. And I didn't realize, I always thought like people would need to go like to Honolulu first and then could also go to Maui. But I found out there are direct flights from California to Maui as well on like Hawaiian air and stuff. So a lot of people will do that too because people really, really like Maui. So that was interesting to find out too. But yeah, it's basically like for me, I said it was almost like Hawaii for them in California is almost like the east coast like going to like puerto rico it has like yeah similar vibes um where it's like that island life and you can go to like the rainforest and stuff like that and you know puerto rico for us is like around four or five hours as well so um it was just so interesting to me because like for i i don't know i guess for us on the east coast it's like hawaii is such this like bucket list once in a lifetime go for a honeymoon type destination but like for people on the west coast it's like oh yeah they've probably gone a ton I mean obviously not everybody it's like if you have the privilege to travel whatever but for them it's just so easy so it's just like so funny to think about that kind of stuff I don't know I've only been to Oahu. I worked a job in Honolulu for a couple months, and Honolulu is– I mean, Oahu is great, but I didn't– I was kind of– I'm now sort of regretting that I didn't stay after for a couple weeks and, like, go to Maui and go to Kauai because everybody says that, like, Maui and Kauai are, like, amazing, the big island. Yeah. So now I need to go back. I would definitely– I would definitely want to go back, but, I mean, Maui, like, totally– blew me away for sure. Um, but yeah, so we landed, I landed in Honolulu and I got, um, an Uber and my Uber driver was just so nice. Like all of our Uber drivers were Lyft drivers. They were just amazing. Like gave so much advice, like just so welcoming and exciting to have us. And like Hawaii has been through a lot. Like there was, maybe this is why I have like a When I was in like my prime TikTok days, I posted a deal, kind of like a travel zoo kind of Groupon type deal to go to Hawaii. And it went pretty viral. And I had a lot of like local Hawaiians that were commenting on it and were like really, really upset by it because they didn't want people from like mainland U.S. coming to Hawaii because it was still– Because of the fires? I think it was just because it was still like aftermaths of like the pandemic and like they were still recovering from that. And so they were like, you know, like people were still like wearing masks and things like that. But travel was still starting to pick up. And so they were like, do not come here. Like I know the homeless population was like getting crazy and obviously costs and things like that. And then, yeah, they've gone through a lot with like fires and things. So I think they've just gone through a lot. with that kind of stuff but I mean obviously it's a major tourist destination and a lot of people are in like make their money from tourism so it's one of those things that's it's it's you know it's a hard thing but um yeah so we landed in Honolulu we were there for for a little while I took the uber too we were at the Hilton um on Waikiki Beach um And that was a really– it was a nice hotel. That was the conference hotel. So we had those two nights. But beautiful balcony. You could see, like, the beach from the hotel room. And it was, like, a huge, like, campus almost. So it was one of those, like, resorts that had, I think, like, four pools. And, you know, you had to walk, like, 10 minutes to get to the building where the gym was and whatever. Then there's like they have the spa and they just have so many buildings and so many restaurants and pools. And it's kind of crazy running around there. And you can definitely tell it's like where all the conferences are and where, you know, a lot of sporting events, like a lot of there were a lot of kids there. I think it was also like around spring break time, too. So it was just like there was just. people everywhere but something that was really fun the day that I landed which was a Friday they have actually been putting on a free firework show every Friday for like 50 years now over 50 years it's been like since like the 80s so every Friday they put on this free firework show on Waikiki Beach or the hotel does it so that was just like a fun little introduction to To the island. We got poke. I got my first poke bowl ever. Yum. Which was so fun. I did not get the malasadas, which is so sad. Italy. I. Okay. Oh, my gosh. I literally. Okay, guys. Listen. I cannot. I literally was like, you have to go to Leonard's. You have to go to Leonard's. Okay. All right. Okay. So, okay. The reason why. Okay. Let me think. Okay. There were so many reasons. I'm just giving you shit. This was on the list, okay? And Bronwyn had already gone. And so... Obviously, I wasn't going to go on Friday because, guys, you have to go in the morning because they do sell out. Like, a lot of these places will sell out and stuff like that. So, it's recommended to go in the morning. Also, they're more fresh because they're kind of like, they're like, I don't know. But that's it. So, we woke up on Friday morning. We went to Farmer's Park. We absolutely didn't have to go to Farmer's Park. We got, like, fresh juices. I got, like, I was like, I didn't like the people. I was like, I don't know.
