Waiting isn't Wasted

Sometimes life brings a season of waiting. Which I certainly am not good at doing. Waiting is hard in a culture that values getting things done and continually moving forward. But what if the time of waiting is a time when God is working behind the scenes? What if the time of waiting is a chance for us to grow?

Welcome to season four of Faith in the Cracks. I'm Pastor Karen Wright. Life has cracks, moments between activities, places where we feel fractured. This is the space where we listen for God in the ordinary moments of life, where we are reminded that just as cracks let things in, it's a space for light and love to shine through. So just like plants grow in the cracks of a sidewalk, let faith grow in the cracks of our lives, trusting that God is at work within us. Episode 20. Waiting isn't wasted. Most of us don't like waiting. We wait for medical results, for job opportunities, for healing, for answers to prayer, or just waiting in a line at the grocery store. But in the Bible we see Noah waiting for the storm to pass forty days and forty nights in the ark. Abraham waited years for God's promise. Moses and the Israelites wandered in the desert for forty years. The disciples waited after Jesus' ascension and before the Spirit came at Pentecost. And waiting isn't empty time. It's a formation. Now in our Western culture, productivity is the measure that is often used. If we're not accomplishing something, if we're not doing something, we feel like we're falling behind. But sometimes we need that time to grow. If you think about seeds growing underground, and I think particularly about bamboo, that you don't see growth because the growth going down happens first before it starts breaking through the surface. So if you are in a season of waiting, no matter what you're waiting on, don't assume nothing is happening. Perhaps God is forming something in you, is shaping something in you, is helping you discover something that there was no other way for it to grow. And waiting isn't simply a space between events. Sometimes it's the place where the deepest work of God happens. Sometimes when we sit in the stillness, when we pray, when we are open to receiving, the deepest work can begin. So I hope that even when you find yourself in a season of waiting, that you can trust that God is at work growing something new. Until next time. Thanks for listening.
