Spinning the "Wheel of Luck"

When Destini and I crafted our "Wheel of Luck" to teach our kids about money through chores, we never expected it to spin us into a whirlwind family debate. Our youngest's fluctuating fortunes on this homemade game led to a lively discussion about fairness and the values we're imparting. It's all fun and games until someone lands on Bankrupt—or is it? Destini's sharp questions and my own dubious role as Monopoly's banker add a personal flavor to this episode, offering a candid glimpse into the sometimes messy process of guiding our children through life's financial ups and downs.
Join us, Michael and Destini , as we unfold the consequences of risk and greed witnessed during family game night. Our eldest's cautious approach contrasts with her sibling's boldness, setting the stage for life lessons that extend far beyond the game board. We'll reflect on the weighty responsibility of teaching tough lessons, like dealing with loss and making smart choices, and how these shared moments can sculpt a young person's understanding of the world. Expect to be entertained, challenged, and maybe even a little inspired, as we navigate the delicate act of nurturing through play.

You're listening to the WDYM, the what Do you Mean podcast. Now everyone gather around and listen to one of Hamilton's best podcasts. No research to back this up.
Speaker 2And welcome to another episode of the WDYM. I'm your host, Michael Gillespie, and today's episode is a impromptu episode, Guess, starring again Destiny Gillespie. Hey, is that the best intro you can do? You can't say, hey guys, what's up? So this one is an impromptu. So you know how we got the Reddit thing where we? Am I the A-hole? Right, we got, am I the butthole for today? So let me give you a little back story of what happened today. Today I finally got my wheel and I ordered a wheel today and you know, like the Price is Right wheel or anything like that. Take a listen, Oops, try again. You hear that right. So I bought a wheel today and for a special treat or a special way to give my kids an incentive to do an allowance, I put prize money on the wheels. So all day today my youngest one is just going out spinning the wheel. She's just going yay, yay.
Speaker 2Just playing with the wheel. I've always been told like you can't play with house money, right, you don't pose a touch thing that ain't going to help you. So we play today and she plays, and she ends up in the positive the first time. So the second time she plays she loses money. In fact, she goes into the negative. She goes into the negative and then storms off to a room upset. So I'm asking well, that's my opinion. Well, let me first off, let me get the opinion of the wifey first, and then I will bounce off that. So, destiny, am I the butthole? Am I the butthole for playing for one, playing the wheel game with Amelia and two? Who's in the wrong on this one? Go ahead.
Speaker 3Can you hear me?
Speaker 2We can hear you. We go ahead and hear each other.
Speaker 3Ah what.
Speaker 2I'm listening.
Speaker 3I don't know if she fully understand the second part. So the first round was a dollar a spend no wrong Half of your.
Speaker 2Did you see that she was already wrong?
Speaker 3the first thing said no, no, it was three dollars for three spins.
Speaker 2You just said one dollar, so this is recorded.
Speaker 3She said one dollar a spin. There was three spins.
Speaker 1Okay so same thing, just a different way. I said it.
Speaker 2Basically.
Speaker 3So she had three spins and she was up four dollars, so she had 11 dollars Correct, and then she wanted to do it again.
Speaker 2Right now, let me stop you, because you only put a spin this every time you get allowance and this is the first time where you've done this. So I explained to her look, if you're wanting to spin again, you're gonna have to double the entry fee. So now, the three dollars is now turned into six dollars. She, as far as my knowledge she, shook her head. She was aware of it. Yes, she was Correct. I guess what do you mean you guessed you were right there. You see that she's right there in the same room.
Speaker 3but she's saying I guess Well, I had to ask you to repeat it to make sure she understood, but that was after.
Speaker 2I repeated it, she understood Okay, okay. So anyway, she rolls again and she gets, because there's negatives on the, there's negatives on the, which is like a little fortune you can lose a turn, go bankrupt, anyways. So she landed on negative, negative, negative each time, to a point where she owed the bank, which is the juicy box. She put money in the juicy box because there's a thing on the wheel that says juicy box. You get whatever's money in the juicy box. Whenever you lose money, it goes in the juicy box. So therefore, when someone gets the juicy box, they get all the money. What?
Speaker 3It's a juicy fruit box. That's what it sounds weird saying. Whoa, whoa, remember, this is a.
Speaker 2G show, I know, but you're like a juicy box.
Speaker 3juicy box, juicy, it's a juicy fruit box. Continue.
Speaker 4OK so?
Speaker 2So gosh the. Anytime you lose money, it's in the juicy box, right? So juicy fruit box. I'm not going to come up with a new name for that, because you know, you know this ain't funny. So so back to the original question Am I the butthole for?
Speaker 3For her.
Speaker 2I didn't take all her money.
Speaker 3But then you spend it and you win. Ok, look every time we play a game, Michael always wins. Ok if it's for like $20 or $50, he wins majority of the time. So he spends and gets $10 gift card and then he spends again and you get what? Ten dollars.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 3And then you spend again and you get what?
Speaker 2I don't know. I just came out in the positive positive.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 2OK, so here's my thing. Right, I'm an, I'm an, I watch things, I observe things. They're spending their spending on the right, it's on the right side, right, and I see that they're losing. What does a person who is observant do? Well, I'm not spending right, I'm spending on the left. I spend left and I win. Ok, I am observing.
Speaker 3I'm sorry, I didn't want to go first.
Speaker 2And that's also reason why I don't want to go first. Right, I am observing. I need to watch what you guys are doing. So therefore, if they're spending right and keep losing, I'm going to spend left and start winning. What's wrong with that? Nothing, ok. So what other games do I win in?
Speaker 3Monopoly Mario Kart.
Speaker 2So here's something that you may not know you ready, when I'm the banker, I still have myself $20.
Speaker 3You better not. You will never be the banker again.
Speaker 2Every time you're not looking, $20.
Speaker 3Really no.
Speaker 2I'm kidding.
Speaker 3You try to try to take my money and put it up under the board, hey come on, hey, if you're not cheating, you're not trying.
Speaker 2So back to the original question Am I the butthole for this situation?
Speaker 3A little bit what you took all my baby's money Wait a minute, and now she doesn't have any money for the book fair. Wait a minute, she has $10 and she can't even buy one book.
Speaker 2Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. That's crazy. I didn't tell her to double down.
Speaker 3Well, you should have stopped and not let her do it again. I, because you told her we're not doing this again. It's one time you get three spins, that's it.
Speaker 2OK.
Speaker 3So she convinced you to do it again.
Speaker 2She didn't convince you, says she wanted to do it again. This is listen. In the grand scheme of things, this is a life lesson to not be greedy and be gracious for what you got.
Speaker 3She was just trying to get some more money to buy another.
Speaker 2Isn't that why we all go to the to the casino? When someone went to the casino, I won.
Speaker 1You won.
Speaker 2Right, you remember that. I know you won and you up here bragging and and got the little video that you said oh, you didn't brag, but you know you, you're whoo whoo.
Speaker 3Well, I won.
Speaker 2OK Well.
Speaker 3OK, I still have it to see.
Speaker 2Is that not bragging? That is clearly bragging in my book. Sorry, I'm injured, so I am the, I'm the partial but, but no, but that's the whole topic of this one, Stopped and said nope, one round, like I said. So I think this is a life lesson hey look, I need, I'm ahead. It's like when we go to the casino I'm ahead. Right now, I'm a pocket this ahead money and play with my loose money. That I wanted to see. No, and if I lose it all, oh well, because I'm still got my base money.
Speaker 3Maybe you should explain that to her first.
Speaker 2No, I don't, I did.
Speaker 3If, if you lose, then you might not have any money.
Speaker 2But was she all on the wheel practicing for hours?
Speaker 3in the negative, wanted to win again. Ok Well, guess what? She was trying to get some more money for the book fair.
Speaker 2Uh-huh. Well, I'm sorry, but she lost. It ain't my fault, not nice, I'm laughing because I knew this would happen.
Speaker 3And you had to do no in the back of my head when she wanted to play again.
Speaker 2you run the risk of losing this money.
Speaker 3You should have told her that.
Speaker 2Well, she should have known that.
Speaker 3Like, do you understand With you doing this? It's gonna cost you $6. And you have $11, so then you will only have $5.
Speaker 2But she has three spins.
Speaker 3But you have three spins. You could get more money or you could be broke and let me.
Speaker 2Let me mind you that there is plus. There's positives on here too. There's a $10 positive, there's a $2 positive, there's a $5 positive, there's the Juicy Fruit Box, there's gift cards on here, and what else? There's something else. Oh, the mystery money. The mystery money is you select the mystery money, right. But here's the idea behind it. I put numbers one through 12 down and I put a random number, zero through 11. So you pick 12, and 11 might be under 12. You get $11. That is fair, and on top of it you can get the Juicy Fruit Box. Good job.
Speaker 2So I don't think I'm the butthole for this. Give me if you have an opinion on this. Give me an email at thewdympodcastgmailcom. Again, that's thewdympodcastgmailcom Cause I don't think I'm the butthole for this, but I'm gonna get her take on it right now. Okay, part two of the. What do I call it. What do I call it? Oh, am I the butthole for today? Okay, so, to recap, you played a game and I have. Oh, first off, let me do that. First. We got Amelia Gillespie to get her side of the story. Amelia, how you doing. Great, Great, you hear that. Okay, All right.
Speaker 4Why am I?
Wheel of Luck
Speaker 2here, okay. So, to recap, we played the game, the wheel, what'd you call it? The wheel of love. I guess someone wasn't very lucky today. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. So let's, let's go over the thing today, right? Number one, you played how many times? Six, no, okay, two times. Cause each turn you get three turns, right, okay, you got to speak up, okay, so you played the first time. And where were you? Where you ahead, where you up on money? Okay, okay. So why did you play a second time?
Speaker 2Because I have a book fair soon and I don't have enough money to get the books I want, okay, so I wanted to double my chances? Okay, so did I explain to you? If you played again, you got to pay double. Yeah, did you understand that? Yeah, okay. So this further proves that one, I'm not the butthole for letting them try this. And number two, that your mama or your little guardian see what's trying to protect you and maybe she's like maybe you didn't understand, but clearly you did. Right, clear, yeah, you got to speak up, cause you want to make, you want to make podcast episodes, and now you can't speak up, okay. So, in the grand scheme of things, who was the butthole? You know what? I'm going to edit that out. I'm going to edit that out, ladies and gentlemen, cause that was not the butthole.
Speaker 3Did you think you were going to win?
Speaker 4Well, no, no, yeah, but dad has a hundred freaking five dollars, okay.
Speaker 2So again, try to explain this in a normal voice. Why did you? You thought you thought you were going to win, right? Yeah, that's why you played a second time. So if we do this again, will you do it a second time when you're up? No, okay. So, unless you're like super up, right, like you went $10 and keep winning $10 or something like that.
Speaker 2So I don't think I'm on the butthole for this, but you think I am. That's not nice. That's not nice. Well, you asked. Well, yeah, I'm being honest, yes, and you're entitled to your opinion, but I think you're wrong in this situation, because you got to understand there's consequences to all our actions. If you gamble, you run a chance of winning and losing, right, but if you win, it's a good thing, right? Hello, yes, okay, okay. With that being said, I appreciate it. No, we're done. I just wanted to get your opinion on it, that's all. This was gonna be the episode. This is gonna be the episode titled. Am I the Butthole for letting you play on the Wheel of Luck? She's looking at me like stone face because she lost. Yo, if you're done, you can leave.
Speaker 4Is there any other surprises?
Speaker 2As far as what? So I can play again and get more money. If you want to play, you could spend. You could spend, if you want to pay, three dollars if you want to pay, you see that. See, this is a life lesson like this is one of this is this is the things that a parent must do. I mean, I thought that here's another thing these kids, my kids I should say my Apologize, my kids get allowance. I didn't get allowance when I was kid and that's. Did you get allowance? No, no. So these are just win-win situations, right? So For her to have this happen at 10, it's kind of a blessing in disguise, because you got. You got to learn not to be greedy. Prime example my oldest she just first you didn't even want to play, then she decided to play. So let's get her opinion on this, okay. So the third and hopefully final part of this is that my oldest daughter, emma, she decided to play too. Now, first she was reluctant to play. Why did you want to play at first?
Speaker 4because mom was all uh, because I was straightening my hair. So I decided that I was gonna wait, because I and then everybody was taking forever like no, oh, let's go, yeah, let's go, like just shut up. So I decided not to play and finish my hair first.
Speaker 2Okay, so old miss straight hair don't care, they was doing her hair and Amelia went, then Mom went, then I went and then you decided to play and you followed the same rules as Amelia. You came in, you put your three dollars down and what happened? 14, and what do you normally get? 12. Oh so she came out on a profit, right? So why didn't you play again?
Speaker 4Because I'm not gonna test my luck like that.
Speaker 2Boom. Oh wait, I got a sound for that.
Speaker 4With two more dollars.
Life Lessons and Self-Reflection
Speaker 2That's crazy. Wow. She said yo, I'm up to, I'm gonna hold on to these two dollars on top of my allowance. Now she could have gambled, put the six in and get it, but she's decided to stop. So I guess my life lessons are getting reaching half the half the children Emma's older. Too. Okay, but how many times we played games before and and we've gotten well, okay, also, sometimes you kill, okay, whatever about life lessons and stuff.
Speaker 4but like, sometimes you know you got to take risks, so that was her risk that she took wait, hold on.
Speaker 2That's crazy Easy, oh my god. Anyway, that's another episode for another time. But uh, in conclusion, we've just I've discovered that I'm not the butthole for this situation and when allowance, allowance time comes around next time, maybe, just maybe, she will learn less. I don't think I'm the bad guy in this situation.
Speaker 4Why is this getting so deep?
Speaker 2I mean, I just, I'm just, you know, initially, when she got upset and then after she looked after a million loss, she went storm straight upstairs.
Speaker 4Well, that's how everybody naturally react.
Speaker 2I mean just take, you know, you take your elbows, you know okay.
Speaker 4Well, she's got to learn she's dead. Oh my god, I want to push that button one more time. Push it.
Speaker 2No, no. So exactly that's the thing you got to. These are life lessons. You gotta learn and understand. So, with that being said, I don't know what time or at two minutes, so I'm gonna end that episode on here, because that's the life lesson today. Ladies and gentlemen, learn when was it learn? When to hold on?
Speaker 4I like you're so funny.
Speaker 2Thank you. I thought that would be a good way to do an episode For the podcast, cuz I got other episodes to do and I thought it's a good lesson for anybody to learn here on the WD why, as always, I'm your host, michael Gillespie. I hope everybody's doing good, hope everybody's doing well. I hope everybody takes care of each other and themselves. I'm out girl scout. Voice out donate case.
