Happiness—it’s more than a fleeting feeling; it’s a science, a pursuit, and sometimes, an enigma. Have you ever wondered how two people with vastly different lifestyles can experience similar levels of contentment? That’s part of the exploration in our latest episode, where we navigate the murky waters of happiness amid a nation politically divided and the turkey-filled joys of Thanksgiving. We turn a lens on the recent elections that saw two female candidates making waves, sparking a conversation on democracy, representation, and the post-election atmosphere. As the holiday season beckons, we also tackle the perennial challenge of balancing indulgence with health goals.
In pursuit of understanding happiness, we dive into the intricate dance of material and emotional wealth. The concept of the "hedonic treadmill" paints a vivid picture of how the pursuit of more often leads to less satisfaction. But it’s not all gloom; there’s a silver lining. The power of strong relationships and a defined sense of purpose shines as key players in achieving long-term joy. Seasoned with personal anecdotes, we explore strategies for nurturing a balanced life—prioritizing experiences, embracing gratitude, and aligning work with personal values to craft a fulfilling existence.
Social media and technology occupy a significant space in our lives, and with it comes a slew of pressures that redefine communication and self-perception. We tackle body image issues and societal expectations that have been magnified in the digital age. The conversation sheds light on the importance of real connections and the potential pitfalls of digital over-reliance. Technology’s rapid evolution could shape the future of personal relationships, and we ponder the implications of this shift. Exploring the Science of Happiness
Bobby FrostYo yo yo, it's your boy. Bobby Frost, and Bobby Frost Media Presents Tribe Parenthoo. I'm solo again today, how y'all do at the elections, man, I want to get into it. I know I've seen the country was super divided right now, which is like crazy when you listen to the candidates talking about how they're going to improve America, and it seemed like more divided than ever. I would say this and I don't like saying it because it's the same cliche to say that that it's more divided than ever but this one seemed like for real. Hillary Clinton's stuff was kind of like that. When it was Hillary Clinton and Trump, the Biden and Trump was messed up too. But I think this one was only more divided because, nah, it's a woman and a woman of color. So where are we voted for? Man? We got another four years of knockdown. We got a knockdown and it is what it is. You know what I'm saying. You got to do what you got to do, so I ain't going to touch on too much about the election. You know, I just wondered if y'all got out there and vote how y'all feel.
Bobby FrostY'all can leave something in the inbox, dm or comment on the webpage charmparencycom or on any of the podcast platforms. Y'all Listen to the episodes on. You can go on there and leave a comment. I ain't been on nothing Getting ready for the Thanksgiving season.
Bobby FrostYou know, man, it be like a gift and encouragement Thanksgiving coming around because I'd be ready to eat. But you know, I'm trying to get that summer bod together, man. So you know what I'm saying. That's tough Because I know I'm the type of person on Thanksgiving I ain't going to lie to you, that's just me Only holiday I really do it on Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving I'm going to get about two or three plates. I might not finish, I might finish the first two and put another one up, but I'm going to get about two or three plates. I'm a big fan of turkey. I see a lot of people ain't fans of cranberry sauce, but I love cranberry sauce. I can eat cranberry sauce by myself, but I definitely like it with the dressing of a song called Stuffing. I could eat cranberry sauce by itself, but I definitely like it with like you know what I'm saying Um the dressing of a song called the stuffing, but I like that. So, again, prepare for that. And that's about really it. Trying to finish this last, what we at now I want to say like 45 days almost left for the year, a little bit over 45 days. Yeah, I just want to kill these last couple of days, just month and a, and just kill it all the way around from everything, all the way around.
Bobby FrostSo I wanted to get into the topic at hand today, and the topic that I was getting into is I really want to know, like, what's the science of happiness. You know it was pressing on me to talk about it because I see, like, when I do hop on like Facebook sometime on Instagram and Snapchat, but definitely on Facebook and just see how many people seem unhappy I don't even want to say miserable, just unhappy Dealing in the profession that I deal in, seeing kids come in and just be battling depression and other things and be like man, this is like a lot of like, just you know how can I put it? Negative or like dark cloud energy. And then you see I know I've seen a couple people that I see interact with like that's just always happy. So you know I wanted to couple people that I see interact with life. That's just always happy. So you know, I wanted to check into that.
Bobby FrostWhat's the science of being happy? Examine what makes people happy and how personality and character influence one's sense of well-being. You know what I'm saying how you look at life, what makes you unhappy, what makes you happy. You know what I'm saying. One of the things you know what I'm saying, like how you look at life, what makes you unhappy, what makes you happy. You know what I'm saying Like one of the things. You know what I'm saying defining happiness. You know what does happiness mean to different people? You know what's the definition, what's the perspective? You know I did some research and everybody defined happiness as different things and I was talking to one of my homies about another one of my homies. You know what I'm saying and not dogging him or tearing him down or nothing. It was just comparing and contrasting, like how perspective is? You know perception and perspective is everything.
Bobby FrostLike I got one homie like literally like he's content, in my opinion, with the bare minimum. You know, like anybody out here, you know I don't even want to say not striving, because it's his perception, but he's cool with, like if he can get up every day, hit him a couple blunts, get him his little snacks and shit like that and um, you know, chill, play the game. He cool, going to get him a car, going to get him a house Even I'm not like a label Whore or anything like that, but just Even when it come to clothes, you know what I'm saying Like getting his fits, that's really not a big thing, but he always seems happy. Then I got a homie you know what I'm saying Like getting his fits and stuff, that's really not big thing for him, but he always seems happy. Then I got a homie that you know is into labels and had houses and cars and stuff like that, and you know he he seems way more unhappy than he does. And it's like, you know, person A, person B and he seemed way more unhappy.
Bobby FrostLike always complaining about something, you know, always just something, always wrong. I'm like dang. You know, on the outside, looking in, you would think the person with the more things would be happy, but that's not the case in that scenario. You know what I'm saying. That compares and contrasts. You know it's just crazy. You know I always just crazy. You know I always wanted to figure it out out of late.
Bobby FrostIt's been like man. You know, some people are just seem like they prone to being just always unhappy, and then some people, I see happy. I see in my eyes, you know, in my travels in life it seem like it's more unhappy people than it is happy people, you know. Then something else I went and researched like biological basis of happiness and I started looking at stuff. You know I really researched it, so you know I looked at the roles of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine and regulating moods and happiness. And again, like where I work at, a lot of kids come in and find depression and stuff. They had a different type of meds and stuff you know that they deal with and it'd be like man and I've seen some kids you know are better off when they're with the meds and they're not. And it's just, you know, crazy.
Bobby FrostEven looking at that, like how stuff works, it's wild to me how certain stuff work and it's just like would that be the answer to a person if he's, or he or she is having a tough time depressed or fighting depression or having bad thoughts, self depression, or having like bad thoughts, self-harming thoughts, suicidal thoughts or just not self-worth, is it cool to put them on certain medication that will regulate them things? You know what I'm saying. It's a question for me anyways, you know. I know, as y'all listening my listeners out there, I know y'all can understand where I'm coming from too. You might be the person that's unhappy, you might be the person that's super happy and I would like to know, like get some feedback on it Like what's what makes happiness? You know what I'm saying. Like I'd like to know that, because to me it's like a very intriguing thing how I can sit back and just see how different people move different. You know what I'm saying and, like I said, with serotonin, the function is.
Bobby FrostSerotonin is often associated with mood regulation, feelings of well-being, happiness. It plays a role in sleep, appetite, digestion, memory. It's producing the brainstem and is derived from amino acid tritophen I want to say tritophen, I might have butchered that one and then it impacts low-level serotonin or linked to mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. Dopamine a dopamine is known as the pleasure neurotransmitter and because it's involved in reward, motivation and feelings of pleasure, it also plays a role in motor control and various other functions like attention and learning various other functions like attention and learning. So it's produced in several areas of the brain, including the ventral to mental area. I got to go look at exactly where that's placed at in the brain and balancing the levels can lead to conditions such as Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia and addictions. Both neurotransmitters are crucial for maintaining mental health and overall well-being, but they have distinct roles in the pathways in the brain. So, like you know, that's just like, from a biological standpoint, like it was crazy and I've seen how a lot of kids come in with anxiety and depression and stuff and you have to put them on meds. I'm not a big fan of meds but if it's going to make you better and a bunch of side effects, I'm going to roll with it.
Bobby FrostThen something else I was looking at just studying people, being a formal, just studying people, because you know I like being a formal, a former formal. How can I put this? Yeah, you can say introvert, I was a former introvert. So, being that you know what I'm saying, I can say this for sure the personality traits that happen is I like to examine people without them even knowing. Just, you know, just looking at them and checking them out and seeing how, like, happy people are always optimistic. They really don't look at problems and stick with the problem. They go. It's a problem. Let me roll with it and figure it out. You know, unhappy people sit with it, like they sit with their problems and they just wallow in it and it just engulfs them.
Bobby FrostAnother one I was looking at was cultural differences and I see how different cultures and the understanding and pursuit of happiness is different. You know I was looking at that. I see how I was looking at. Prime example, I was looking at, like man. I don't really see too many Middle Eastern people. When I interact with them as stewards or just as a walks of life, they're usually more pleasant. Like I said, they're more pleasant. And I was looking at what makes them more pleasant, like what in their culture makes them more pleasant. Like I said, they're more pleasant and I was looking like what makes them more pleasant, like what in their culture makes them more pleasant. Is it that, like, what's their upbringing, what's their teaching that makes them more pleasant?
Bobby FrostAnd then I can look at again, looking at people more and like I notice more seem like more people that live in rural areas are more happier than people that live in urban areas. Is it because of the hustle and bustle of the urban area? It's like you bunched up. Is that a reason Because you got more space in the rural areas or is it just like because you live in a rural area, you get more outside time, more sunlight, things of that nature. I wonder, because I always had a couple of my kids like, I don't ever go outside, I stay in the house, I don't get outside and get enough sunlight, and sunlight plays a big role in your happiness too.
Bobby FrostI thought about research, seasonal depression, which I didn't think was a thing, but it really is. I thought it was just something to sell, like a game is, but no, that's a serious thing. See, it's a new depression. Another thing I was looking at like and I said this earlier, going back to earlier what I said material wealth versus emotional wealth. You know that's a big thing too. Like how your role with that, like how your role with that, like, do material wealth is more important than emotional wealth? Like which one more important to you? You know that's a big one to me Just thinking about that. Like which one is more so? Like give a definition real quick. More so, like give a definition real quick.
Bobby FrostDefinition of material wealth is referred to accumulation of physical access such as money, property and possession. You know materialistic things Impact on happiness, with having enough money to meet basic needs and reduce financial stress can contribute to happiness. Research shows that, beyond a certain point, additional wealth have diminishing returns on happiness. This is often referred to the hediotic treadmill. Research shows that, beyond a certain point, additional wealth have diminishing returns on happiness. This is often referred to the hedonic treadmill, where people quickly adapt to higher level of incomes and material goods, leading to constant pursuit of more without corresponding increase in happiness. So like when I was talking about my two homeboys, that might be it. So how this is researched and how this is said, like when you can get your necessities, the bare necessities like the Jungle Book or Bubba Lou, when you get your bare necessities, you know if you're making that, you should be happy. You know, I ain't going to say should be happy, but you more likely be happy Once you start pursuing abundance of material wealth. That's what it seem like. It's like the rat race. You always looking to get some more money. You always looking to get some more property, some more status, some more acclaim, things of that nature. So you have that too. That's a big one. We're going to go with emotional wealth. Definition Emotional wealth encompasses non-material aspects of life that contribute to the well-being, such as relationship, personal growth and a sense of purpose.
Bobby FrostImpact on happiness. Emotional wealth is often more strongly correlated with long-term happiness and life satisfaction. Factors such as a strong social connection, meaningful work and personal fulfillment plays a crucial role in emotional well-being. So I wonder which one would be more important. I think they go hand-in-hand, but which one would be more important, emotional wealth or material wealth? I think you need a little bit of both. You know and I can see how emotional wealth will have a longer impact on happiness, a lot more long term. So when you compare them, I can understand the both of you know it's a satisfaction comparing them. I can understand the both of them. It's a satisfaction and a fulfillment. So it seems like to me material wealth can be a little bit more temporary, satisfying and emotional wealth can be a little bit more fulfilling. But I think they both go hand in hand and I noticed this too. Like social connection, material wealth is excessive. Focus on material wealth can sometimes lead to social isolation, because you start feeling like either you're above everybody or you're better than everybody. So you start isolating yourself from people you do know. Not saying that's a good thing or a bad thing, it's just the role it can play. And then when you look at emotional wealth, a strong social connection are a key component of emotional wealth and are strongly linked to happiness.
Bobby FrostThe another thing, four, is purpose and meaning. Material wealth, while it can provide comfort and security, it doesn't necessarily provide a sense of purpose. So again, I've seen that with celebrities all the time. I always used to wonder how can you be a millionaire or a billionaire and have thoughts of suicide and all that? But once you break it down, once you start getting that wealth and stuff, you don't trust people. You think everybody out to get you or they're only with you or around you. Because of your material things, you know, you make a prison of yourself. You become on an island. I can understand that perfectly. And you don't feel like you got a sense of purpose. No more. You just feel like you're just going through the motion, got all this money and then you got emotional wealth. Feel like you're just going through the motion, got all this money and then you got emotional will.
Bobby FrostEngaging in activities that align with personal values, contribute to a sense of purpose, can significantly enhance emotional will. So I can see that too. Like once you start feeling like you got connection with people and you're doing stuff. People could be minimum or major. I can see where the sense of purpose of self can come into that. The sense of purpose a self can come into that. But, like I said earlier, you know it's. You know balancing both. Here goes some tips for practically balancing both.
Bobby FrostPrioritize experiences over possessions. Invest in experience that can create lasting memories and foster connections with others. Cultivate relationships, spend time nurturing I mean nurturing relationships, spend time nurturing relationship with family, friends and the community. Practice and this is a big one, this is like the biggest one. I was going to touch on this on its own Practice gratitude, gratitude.
Bobby FrostRegularly reflect on and appreciate the non-material aspects of life that bring joy and fulfillment. This is something I struggle with, you know a lot, with people you know like being, you know, thankful for stuff that's going on. You know. Be happy with what you got. You know. Gratitude A lot of people don't have enough that they're always worrying about is the grass greener over there? Be happy with what you got, what you're blessed with. Worrying about is the grass greener over there? Be happy with what you got, what you blessed with. This is something I struggle with personally.
Bobby FrostFinding meaningful work, you know. Engage in work or activity that align with your values and provide a sense of purpose. You know, like that's something I done, had a big thing with myself. You know, like I done had jobs where I started feeling like I'm not doing meaningful work. No more, because of how the job is structured, if you get what I'm saying.
Bobby FrostAnd the fifth and last one is managing financial stress. Ensure financial stability to reduce but avoid overemphasizing material accumulation as the primary source of happiness. So, yeah, like you again have your necessities down. You know, and you know what they call them an eggnest. You know what I'm saying Safety egg nest and something do go wrong. But you ain't got to be out here trying to keep up with the Joneses and trying to have the best and the most of everything, because you're going to be stressed, you're going to be in a rat race. By focusing on both material and emotional wealth, you can create a balance and fulfilling life. So, just checking out with the happiness, that's a big thing. I thought was too.
Bobby FrostBut, like I said, I want to go back to the gratitude situation. Like, yeah, I try to teach my kids that Be like be happy for what you got, be grateful for what you got. You can strive to get more, but never lose sight of you already blessed. Don't ever lose sight of that. You know what I'm saying. Because that's when you get distressed, because I have never been the type of person I never really thought about like and it's no knock to nobody who has done it I never got to the point where I thought about killing myself or self-harm myself. I done thought about like what life would be like without me around me and like I done thought about like hey, like dang, I wonder how people move around if I wasn't around, or just little stuff. You know I'm putting everybody to like how big my funeral was. Who would be crying at my funeral? Who would do this stuff. You know just mind-wondering things. You know what I'm saying like that. But I ain't never really thought about like killing myself, like that's never crossed my mind.
Bobby FrostAnd to see that I always wonder like I'm going to talk to some people who could talk about that I know they had attempts at suicides and stuff like that Like what gets you there? You know what's so unhappy that you think about that. You know what I'm saying. Like that's a big thing to me. Like what gets you there to that point. What's so wrong going on in your life that you're that unhappy that you want to leave Earth or hurt yourself? Another thing I think we done talked about this before but, like you got to look at happiness in the digital age, what we're going through right now. You know Like that's big right now. The digital age, that's big, big. You know, like I like what's going on with that one. But man, it's just, it's so much going on right now.
Bobby FrostIt's crazy what's going on right now, how looking at all these social medias can change how you look at yourself, your self-worth. You know, like I remember they was talking about some don't quote me on this how it was, but it was saying like you wouldn't be able to see people likes. You could see likes I think this was on Instagram. They was talking about the idea but they never did Like. You could see your own likes but people couldn't see your likes. And for the brands and people having brands and stuff, I could see why they was against it, but I thought it was good. You know, I'm saying because a lot of people do compare their self-worth to that. They take a picture that they think is really nice and say they was aiming for 300 likes and only got 70 likes. Now they thinking, do I really look good? Because this is a picture I thought was one of my top tier pictures. You know, like checking that out, even some of the jokes like I'm a guy that really has a sense of humor and I got a dark sense of humor, but I can see how something that I would laugh at could really hurt somebody else.
Navigating Digital Age Social Interactions
Bobby FrostSo go check into some of the impacts of technology on happiness. Connectivity Technology allows us to stay connected with friends and family regardless of the geographical distance. Social media platforms, video calls and messaging apps make it easier to maintain relationships. Access to information the internet provides a vast amount of information at our fingertip and enables us to continue to learn and grow, personal or personally. It's a convenience. You can go in there and knock stuff down quick the entertainment side of it but then you have to have the balancing of it. How much time do you spend on social media? How much comparison are you comparing yourself to social media?
Bobby FrostI say this with females all the time, like they really think guys be want IG models and now don't. It's something good to look at, but there's not something you should be holding yourself up to. You know it's not self up to, it's not. She has this body. That's either natural or not natural. But that shouldn't make you feel lesser about your body. I had an argument with my co-host several times. I don't say argument, I say debate. I had a lot of other females.
Bobby FrostI always ask this question when it came to getting the work done and I'm like, if it really was literally just for you, why get it done? If it really was just for you like really we tackling that for it really was just for you why would you get it done? Because guys don't care if you have a fat butt, flat butt, a little gut. Some guys into very big women, small. It's people that's going to you know, rock with you for who you are when you're attention seeking or being an attention whore. What's the purpose of that? You know even the attention you're getting is going to be like not fulfilling.
Bobby FrostSo to go I never understood it To go spend anywhere from $5,000, five to 15,000 on a body and you're saying you're not doing it for men, that looking at other women that has their bodies right or enhance your line. You just want to make it seem like you're not. But you are because, again, you don't need to do that. You know, if that's not what you offer and I always say this now, if you're doing this to enhance a brand, you're doing this. For that that's cool. But just doing it for some, some attention that you're not capitalizing off of at all, I never understood it. You know that's a slippery slope to be going down, you know, and that's again, it's the digital age because, like I said, I didn't see as much body work being done. It was body work being done. What I used to see growing up before we had this explosion of social media.
Bobby FrostIn the digital age, I seen breasts being done and facial work. What is it called? Botox? I had never seen somebody touch their butt or hips and thighs and things like that. I had never seen somebody touch their butt or hips and thighs and things like that. I had never seen it before. Never I seen the tummy tucks, breasts and a little bit of facial work. But since, even when I look at, like you know like it's different and I love talking about the difference between races, you know ethnicities, I love that Not even looking at white girls or Caucasian women, they normally don't come with big butts. Big cheeks Might be wide, but they don't really be like plump. Looking at seeing how many of them that got work done, it's crazy Like man. You know this is wild.
Bobby FrostAnd again, that's the digital age. So you have to have a balance of it. You know what I'm saying. Balance your online and offline activity. Ensure you spend quality time offline. Engage in activities that will promote well-being, such as exercise, hobbies and face-to-face interaction.
Bobby FrostI said this before being out in a dating scene is crazy because a lot of women and men this is for everybody can't have face-to-face conversation, like when people tell me they don't like I used to say this on my calls you'd rather text than call. It's not really that much convenience to text than call. When people say that I used to lie too, take the same amount of energy time to text to call. You know you're going to put more energy typing than you is going to be talking. It's just a lot of people just don't even they didn't get so far removed from human interaction that they sit back and rather just text. People tell when I see people say that that that's a daunting task to have to have a conversation. It's daunting to use your words. Your voice box when it's people can't even talk Deaf people it's a daunting task for you to sit back and use your voice box to talk to somebody else. Your vocal cords no. You just got so far removed from the human interaction thing that that's crazy.
Bobby FrostPeople would rather sit up and like an Instagram story or something like that than a call and say hey, how you doing? And like an Instagram story or something like that. Then I call you and say, hey, how you doing? Like. I literally see people that interact with me on social media and when I see them out in the streets, at a bar, at a club, they won't speak and I look at it. It'd be weird. I'm not the type of person that go out and go speak to you anyway, but it'd be weird. It'd be looking like was in my DM, or you like this picture. You said that you like this, you like that or like the status or something like that comment on a live, and then I see you out in the open and you I don't want to say shy, but you just don't say nothing. It's weird, like because people so far are moved with being able to talk face to face man, like in a dating pool. That would piss me off.
Bobby FrostLike I said one thing we out to eat or something and you're on your phone or you got an AirPod in your ear and stuff like that. Like you can't disconnect from technology for a little minute to enjoy my company or each other company. It's crazy. And like I see some people do this, do the digital detoxes. I think that's great to recharge yourself and get back rooted in human roots.
Bobby FrostFor sure, and you know, again, focus on authentic connection. Use technology to enhance, not replace, real life relationships. Prioritize meaningful conversation, interaction over superficial online engagements. You know I'm looking at stuff now like you're looking at VR, virtual reality or augmented reality, ar. It's like man, think about how this is about to go. You're going to have people really like the meta universe. You're going to have people really just spending time out on the web Like they're a robot plugged in. I ain't going to go too far now. You see Trump just put Elon Musk I forgot the exact name where he at, but it's like a visor for government waste. Like make sure the government is running more efficient and I'm pretty sure to run more efficient. There's no way to make stuff run more efficient than having a bot or an AI do it More. Do it More, disconnect. It's crazy. You know what I'm saying. So like this is wild, you know.
Bobby FrostBut, like I said, this is a great episode for me. I was just getting into stuff that makes humans happy and unhappy. So you know again, practicing tips for increasing happiness, you know, offer advice and strategy. You know what I'm saying. That's what I was trying to do. That's it Really. That's literally all I was trying to do Trying to get people to understand and see some more stuff you know what I'm saying Like things that may help, cause I see a lot of unhappy people. You know what I'm saying. Therapy is great, too. I think people sometimes over rely on therapy because they talk to their therapist but they don't talk to nobody else. So what's the point of having a therapist if you can open up to a therapist but you can't open up to the people in your circle or in your day-to-day life? To me, that don't make sense either. But it was just like I wanted to touch on that. Man. Happiness and what defines happiness will make happiness. So that was it.
Bobby FrostI'm going to get into what I've been listening to, and it's some music that I've been dropping. You know what I'm saying. Especially when you get to the last quarter, a lot of people be dropping. Last episode I talked about the Freddie Giz which for sure was hitting. You know. Another nice project I liked that I just dropped was Primo Rice P-Guy Gang. I rock with Primo Rice real tough Like dog. That's my dog. I rock with him hard and his new project I like it. I don't want to say it's one of his best ones, but I'm a big fan of Harry Fry so I'm always checking out Harry Fry, for sure, always.
