Let's pray. 00:06:05.978 --> 00:06:06.978 Lord, this is our prayer. 00:06:07.298 --> 00:06:08.598 Repeat them in our day. 00:06:09.119 --> 00:06:10.718 In our time make them known. 00:06:10.798 --> 00:06:18.918 Right here, right now, through, through Oasis City Church, Lord, we're praying for, for this, this congregation, this organization. 00:06:19.298 --> 00:06:22.038 Lord, we're praying for all the churches across America. 00:06:22.317 --> 00:06:25.637 Lord, in this time repeat what you've done before in our day. 00:06:26.098 --> 00:06:30.218 Make known your goodness, make known your righteousness, make known your justice. 00:06:30.478 --> 00:06:33.418 And Lord, and even in wrath, Lord, remember mercy. 00:06:33.858 --> 00:06:39.778 Let your mercy be swept across our land and across our churches. 00:06:40.257 --> 00:06:41.278 In Jesus' name. 00:06:42.218 --> 00:06:42.617 Amen. 00:06:43.718 --> 00:06:43.997 Amen. 00:06:44.017 --> 00:06:48.038 Well, I hope you've had, uh, you know, a great weekend, family time. 00:06:48.517 --> 00:06:49.778 Hot dogs, hamburgers, steaks. 00:06:49.798 --> 00:06:50.677 Who has steaks? 00:06:51.639 --> 00:06:52.877 Yeah, I'm a steak guy. 00:06:52.918 --> 00:06:54.257 Like, I don't mess... 00:06:54.298 --> 00:06:59.598 You know, we do the hot dogs and the hamburgers and all that, but it's like boneless ribeye, bone-in ribeye. 00:07:00.038 --> 00:07:01.298 Fresh Thyme had a great sale. 00:07:01.557 --> 00:07:02.218 It was nice. 00:07:02.557 --> 00:07:04.377 Prime too, it was prime. 00:07:04.418 --> 00:07:07.658 Not just choice, it was prime ribeye. 00:07:07.697 --> 00:07:09.077 Anyway, start preaching. 00:07:09.139 --> 00:07:26.547 I can have lunch later I wanna talk about some moves of God in our nation, and then how we can learn from that, and again, apply the true idea of revival that leads to transformation, that leads to reformation. 00:07:26.547 --> 00:07:27.716 I'll do some of this quickly. 00:07:28.226 --> 00:07:34.317 Uh, first of all, in the 1730s all the way through the'40s, there was something that you may have learned in history class. 00:07:34.317 --> 00:07:39.057 It was called the First Great Awakening that began to take place in our nation. 00:07:39.057 --> 00:07:43.437 It was the first major revival to sweep across the American colonies. 00:07:43.666 --> 00:07:49.997 So we were just colonial times, and these are colonial times, and so it affect- affected that re- region. 00:07:50.206 --> 00:07:56.716 Um, it was led by figures like Jonathan Edwards, there were others, but also an English evangement- evangelist, George Whitefield. 00:07:57.317 --> 00:08:20.228 They preached at massive outdoor crowds up and down the colonies they would travel And, and this movement of God emphasized personal, uh, conversion, giving your life to Jesus, surrendering to Jesus, and it was a, it was the idea that you can have a direct relationship with the Lord, not just a, a religious ritual by coming to church services. 00:08:20.408 --> 00:08:27.459 And so the First Great Awakening, about a little over 10 years of this move of God, of great preaching in, in the colonies. 00:08:27.468 --> 00:08:45.129 But then, uh, shortly after that, uh, but it took about 50 years, we had r- um, in roughly the n- n- 19 or 1790s into the 1840s, we had the Second Great Awakening, and this became more broader, more geographically dispersed, uh, than the first wave. 00:08:45.359 --> 00:08:47.668 And we started seeing camp meetings. 00:08:47.889 --> 00:08:51.528 Uh, we, we had the Cane Ridge Revival in Kentucky in 1801. 00:08:52.438 --> 00:09:04.828 Thousands of people started gathering, and, and here, in the Second Great Awakening, we started seeing physical manifestations of people having experiences with God, experiences with the Holy Spirit. 00:09:04.989 --> 00:09:09.818 There was shaking, and there was quaking, and there were these emotional expressions. 00:09:09.818 --> 00:09:17.219 We had the great preacher Charles Finney, uh, a- and he, he had new measures, is what he called them, and they shaped modern revivalism. 00:09:17.399 --> 00:09:22.158 And, and what Finney's preaching did was, was it wasn't just great preaching. 00:09:22.239 --> 00:09:24.839 People learned so much from what he said that they... 00:09:24.989 --> 00:09:27.078 Social reform began to happen. 00:09:27.519 --> 00:09:38.099 They started saying,"Oh, man, we're learning from the Bible about what God cares about the poor and the needy." And so social reform began to take place in this Second Great Awakening. 00:09:38.249 --> 00:09:42.328 We had the rise of the Methodist Church and John Wesley and the fire of God. 00:09:42.328 --> 00:09:45.408 We had, we had a movement called the Circuit Riders. 00:09:45.408 --> 00:09:52.568 These were men and women evangelists who would jump on horseback and ride from town to town, preaching the gospel and having meetings. 00:09:52.568 --> 00:10:01.708 And Francis Asbury was one of the, the great, uh, Circuit Riders of the day, and learning from Wesley's move of the fire of the Holy Spirit. 00:10:01.879 --> 00:10:04.958 And then we saw more reformation begin happening. 00:10:05.109 --> 00:10:13.528 Suddenly, uh, uh, you know, um, uh, racism or slavery started looking, uh, uh, like, like the Church started taking a stand against it. 00:10:13.528 --> 00:10:17.538 The abolition movement began to start from the Second Great Awakening. 00:10:17.619 --> 00:10:19.958 The temperance movement began to start. 00:10:19.989 --> 00:10:23.359 Women's rights began to be preached even though they weren't law yet. 00:10:23.499 --> 00:10:41.863 There was something of reformation that took place from not just great preachers, but people hearing the word and saying,"It's not just enough for me to die and go to heaven." Then in the early 1850s all the way up to the 1900s, we had something called the Third Great Awakening. 00:10:41.863 --> 00:10:41.993 The... 00:10:42.173 --> 00:10:46.812 understand how they would, they would describe this, and this was the media describing these things. 00:10:46.812 --> 00:10:49.232 The first great, the second great, now we have the third one. 00:10:49.232 --> 00:10:49.763 You had D.L. 00:10:49.773 --> 00:10:50.202 Moody. 00:10:50.472 --> 00:10:53.562 Uh, we had urban revivalism that started taking place. 00:10:53.643 --> 00:11:14.102 Now instead of just the countrysides and the cornfields, now we had cities being built in this land, and we needed, we realized that we needed ur- the urban, um, cities needed to have revival just as much as all the farmers did and, and all the, you know, the, the cornfield, uh, uh, circuit riding just blowing through the town. 00:11:14.102 --> 00:11:15.802 Now these cities started developing. 00:11:16.003 --> 00:11:27.528 We needed, um, strategic evangelistic strategies for the cities across the nation We saw the businessman's revival in 1857 and'58. 00:11:27.548 --> 00:11:29.739 Finally, businessmen were saying,"You know what? 00:11:29.839 --> 00:11:31.719 We're just not separated from the church. 00:11:31.719 --> 00:11:47.389 We can be part of the church." And a great prayer movement swept across our nation where business, uh, people were saying,"We need the church to pray for us, and we wanna pray for the church, and we wanna pray for our businesses." We had the Holiness movement that be- began to start. 00:11:47.399 --> 00:11:49.538 Sanctification is beginning to be preached. 00:11:49.729 --> 00:11:52.759 There's paving the way for what we would call Pentecostalism. 00:11:53.208 --> 00:11:55.208 We had the Social Gospel movement. 00:11:55.438 --> 00:11:57.219 Um, and, and this is where... 00:11:57.318 --> 00:12:02.828 This was really cool because it began to address poverty and injustice in our land. 00:12:03.259 --> 00:12:13.889 The church was standing a- up against poverty, creating systems, creating ways to, to minister to the poor, help them, um, you know, get them employed, help them be no longer poor. 00:12:13.999 --> 00:12:17.328 How does social reform started taking place in our land? 00:12:17.328 --> 00:12:29.219 Because of a move of God And something interesting took place right in the early 1900s, in 1904, because a revival broke out, not in America. 00:12:30.259 --> 00:12:34.278 And God's been moving all across the land for thousands of years of human history. 00:12:35.578 --> 00:12:38.668 But, but in Wales, something took place. 00:12:38.668 --> 00:12:55.866 In this small little nation, part of the, the United Kingdom as we know it The Welsh Revival took place, and this young coal miner named Evan Roberts, who was born again and loved the church and loved preaching, and it's this great story. 00:12:55.907 --> 00:12:58.486 And you can go, um, you can go research it on your own. 00:12:58.547 --> 00:12:59.527 We've talked about it a lot. 00:12:59.586 --> 00:13:05.547 Pastor Lynn has been, um, to Wales before and, and has been in the very church where the revival broke out and started. 00:13:05.917 --> 00:13:07.567 Um, but intercessors were praying. 00:13:07.647 --> 00:13:09.307 They needed a preacher. 00:13:09.366 --> 00:13:10.006 These intercessors... 00:13:10.067 --> 00:13:15.506 See, moves of God, all moves of God, if you study them throughout the earth, they all start with intercessors. 00:13:15.527 --> 00:13:16.746 They don't start with great preachers. 00:13:17.047 --> 00:13:18.486 The great preachers figure it out. 00:13:19.817 --> 00:13:22.927 They're like,"Somebody been praying." And, and the intercessors are like,"We've been praying for you. 00:13:22.986 --> 00:13:23.787 Now go preach. 00:13:23.966 --> 00:13:30.506 Go do your job." And so Evan was one of those guys, young man, and the- God started moving in Wales. 00:13:30.527 --> 00:13:32.986 He started moving, and it wasn't just about one church. 00:13:33.346 --> 00:13:39.787 The churches were packed, and then he would just leave one church service, go across the street to the other church. 00:13:40.067 --> 00:13:41.047 That church was packed. 00:13:41.067 --> 00:13:42.307 He'd preach the same message. 00:13:42.567 --> 00:13:44.846 Then he would go down, and the other church was packed. 00:13:44.947 --> 00:13:49.647 There wasn't enough churches in, in Wales, and he would just travel around. 00:13:49.905 --> 00:13:58.817 Happened for two years, and this revival started doing something because now we had what they, what the writers, the media called it emotional worship. 00:14:00.567 --> 00:14:02.927 Now people started singing in the Spirit. 00:14:03.706 --> 00:14:04.407 Hello, somebody. 00:14:04.447 --> 00:14:06.447 Now people started playing music. 00:14:06.517 --> 00:14:11.027 There were, there was musicianship that started in the church with this revival. 00:14:11.366 --> 00:14:14.307 And, and there were public confessions of faith. 00:14:14.606 --> 00:14:15.126 There, there... 00:14:15.167 --> 00:14:21.006 People on the streets, men and women on the streets were confessing their sin to one another and getting saved. 00:14:21.226 --> 00:14:23.826 It wasn't even about Evan anymore and his message. 00:14:25.687 --> 00:14:28.407 There was dramatic life transformation. 00:14:28.746 --> 00:14:32.567 Communities within the nation were said to be cha- changed. 00:14:32.606 --> 00:14:33.246 You can read this. 00:14:33.287 --> 00:14:34.267 It's been studied. 00:14:34.606 --> 00:14:42.126 Reductions in crime and particularly in drunkenness, bars literally shutting down. 00:14:42.486 --> 00:14:53.535 News of revival spread, spread so quickly, and here was the funny thing about this, th- there was family re- reformation and transformation in the Welsh Revival in Wales at that time in just a matter of a couple of years. 00:14:54.047 --> 00:15:08.586 And what was happening was the dads who were miners and, and field workers who were getting drunk after work and spending their paycheck a- on the bars, and they, their houses were being foreclosed on, a- and their kids were impoverished, and there wasn't enough food. 00:15:08.606 --> 00:15:12.547 What happened was they got saved, they got radically saved. 00:15:12.586 --> 00:15:16.385 They gave up spending all their money at the bar. 00:15:16.427 --> 00:15:17.886 Some of the bars are closing. 00:15:17.927 --> 00:15:20.267 They started now spending money on their family. 00:15:20.537 --> 00:15:22.206 Their children started eating better. 00:15:22.537 --> 00:15:46.924 Their, their marriages were restored, and all of a sudden, families were completely transformed in a matter of a couple years And, and this, this revival would be the first that we would call, like, a media revival, where for the first time, at least we know in church history, this word got to America that this was taking place. 00:15:47.095 --> 00:15:52.595 And it got all throughout Great Britain that there was a move of God and a preacher and, and, and all of these churches being filled. 00:15:52.595 --> 00:16:00.475 And it was not even about a, what church you went to because the, the whole country is now being affected by this move of God. 00:16:01.134 --> 00:16:16.445 And there was a man named Frank Bartleman in Los Angeles, and he was a preacher, but he found out about what was taking place in Wales, and he, he contacted Evan Roberts, and they're said to have multiple conversations and meetings where he was saying,"What if God would do what He's doing in Wales? 00:16:16.445 --> 00:16:18.125 What if He would do it in Los Angeles? 00:16:18.154 --> 00:16:32.955 What if He would do it in California?" Uh, he was so interested, um, in, in, in this movement, and one of the things about, um, uh, uh, Frank was that he, he was, he was interested in documenting what would take place. 00:16:34.475 --> 00:16:39.014 And so there was now a connection with what was taking place in that year. 00:16:39.014 --> 00:16:56.226 The very next year, we- something called the Azusa Street Revival takes place in Los Angeles from the Azusa Street Mission Now this revival started what we would known as modern-day Pentecostalism in our country. 00:16:57.586 --> 00:17:03.025 But, but, but boy did the Azusa Street Revival not make any sense in the natural. 00:17:03.946 --> 00:17:07.247 Because it started by a man named William Seymour. 00:17:08.246 --> 00:17:15.165 A bla- and, and this is not your history lesson, but you have to, you have to grasp some of it, and I don't have time to talk about 12 years of his, his history. 00:17:15.207 --> 00:17:19.705 But William Seymour was, was a Black man who was blind in one eye. 00:17:20.246 --> 00:17:35.146 He actually got smallpox in Cincinnati, and he was blind in one eye and, and he was so hungry to learn about the Holy Spirit that he attended, uh, uh, uh, a Par- a man named Parham, his, his, uh, class on the Holy Spirit. 00:17:35.405 --> 00:17:46.526 But see, this was in the early 1900s, and segregation was very strong, so William as the only Black man who couldn't be in the ch- the Bible class with all the white guys. 00:17:46.705 --> 00:18:02.205 And so instead of being offended that he wasn't allowed to sit in the room and learn about the Holy Spirit, he chose to be unoffended, and he sat outside at his desk, sometimes with the door cracked open and sometimes with the window cracked open, learning about the Holy Spirit. 00:18:03.066 --> 00:18:11.786 Now, the, the terrible part and the ironic part is, Parham, who's teaching, we later find out is a white supremacist. 00:18:12.287 --> 00:18:16.266 Or at least leans that way, had some ties with the KKK. 00:18:16.526 --> 00:18:18.846 You learn all, you don't learn about it then, but you learn. 00:18:19.105 --> 00:18:47.583 So here's a man teaching on the Holy Spirit, not knowing that there's a Black man that, that he doesn't, won't allow in his class, that's about to be the catalyst for the greatest revival at that time in our nation And Bartleman, the writer, remember, who was trying to figure out the Welsh revival, Bartleman writes this statement that became headline news about the Azusa Street Revival. 00:18:47.712 --> 00:18:56.032 Because now we've got, um, William Seymour pastoring a revival that's filled with white people and Black people and Asians. 00:18:56.613 --> 00:19:07.232 'Cause there was a lot of Chinese and Japanese and, and, uh, Southeast Asians that lived in LA at that time, and they, and they were, you know, moving and, and doing all sorts of, you know, construction and labor and such. 00:19:07.343 --> 00:19:17.752 So we had this Black man who's not even allowed to be in the room, who's pastoring not just the move of God, but a, a, a multiracial move of God. 00:19:19.363 --> 00:19:38.957 And Bartleman wrote that at the Azusa Street Revival, that the color lines were washed away by the blood And so, so we see how God has swept across our nation in glorious fashion. 00:19:39.146 --> 00:19:46.487 And, and you know, at, in Azusa Street, you started getting some music and some dancing and s- some, you know, some of the stuff that was happening in Wales. 00:19:46.666 --> 00:19:55.817 Now we had spontaneous singing and praying in tongues and, and singing in tongues, and all of this is taking place, and now the world is starting to write about it. 00:19:55.817 --> 00:19:57.017 They're starting to read about it. 00:19:57.186 --> 00:20:13.721 And it wasn't just, uh, it wasn't just church periodicals talking about this, but Azusa was getting worldwide attention And then after that, we have the mid-20th century revivals. 00:20:13.721 --> 00:20:15.750 We have Youth for Christ that started. 00:20:15.750 --> 00:20:21.961 We have Billy Graham and his era that started, and crusades from the 1940s through the 2000s. 00:20:22.530 --> 00:20:25.671 We had American evangelicalism being birthed. 00:20:25.931 --> 00:20:30.760 We had revival and mass media, uh, trying to figure things out. 00:20:30.830 --> 00:20:38.800 We had the Latter Rain movement, and I've studied this one a lot because, um, some of my, like, faith heroes are in there, and, uh, don't have time to talk all about it. 00:20:38.800 --> 00:20:52.181 But, but in the'40s and'50s, we saw great healing, uh, healing evangelists that started operating their tent meetings around the United States, tens of thousands of people, churches being He says this,"But as for me and my family, we're on the Lord's side." Watch, the house. 00:35:47.217 --> 00:35:59.527 "In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see so that everyone will praise your Heavenly Father." True See, this is why God loves the nations, and this is why he wants his people in every nation, because godliness makes a nation great. 00:38:42.411 --> 00:38:43.121 It's godliness. 00:38:44.871 --> 00:38:47.911 And sin is a disgrace to any nation. 00:38:48.831 --> 00:39:00.190 So when, when the Father's looking for nations, and he's looking for revival and great awakenings to sweep the land, and, and blessings and renewal and revival, he wants to look and say,"Look, there's godliness in that nation. 00:39:00.320 --> 00:39:02.451 That nation is great in my kingdom. 00:39:02.771 --> 00:39:13.971 Look, there's so much sin in that nation, it's a disgrace to anyone who lives there."
