2. Interview with Neal Benowitz, MD
Mar 28, 2023 Episode 2
Patil Armenian, MD

Dr. Neal Benowitz is a professor emeritus at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) where he’s been a researcher and bedside clinician since 1973. He possesses the rare combination of working in 3 fields concurrently: Cardiology, Medical Toxicology, and Clinical Pharmacology. Dr. Benowitz has done seminal work in the human pharmacology of nicotine in relationship to pathogenesis and examining individual differences in vulnerability to tobacco related disease. Not only has he done massive amounts of research and clinical work, but has helped shape public health policies regarding nicotine with his findings. One of the best parts about talking to him in this episode is understanding what drove him to work at an extremely high level for decades and how he stayed there. As Dr. Benowitz says, do work that you think matters and focus on it. I’ll add one more lesson from him- while having outlets such as exercise and travel to manage stress and stay rejuvenated.
