So you are the first. Maybe the first ask your question, Billy. So we went around the room and are just trying to get some stuff last week and the first thing that popped in my mind, you know, being one of your best friends. Why do you think you're so hateable to the public?

That's a great question. It's funny, I mean, obviously, there's, there's people that like me, and like, you know, a real big supporters of mine. And then there's just people that, that just hate me. And I don't understand it.

Mostly behind the keyboard? I mean, there's some fans out there. I've said some things. And you know, me, I sort of chime back at him. Yeah. Which I love. I love it. Yeah. Which I don't mind doing that make them look like idiots. Because I think they feel like they've got this sense of, I'm a big man. I'm going to say something to him. Most guys don't say anything back. And, and majority time I do. I just think it's because I mean, I show my emotions on my sleeve. I think obviously, I'm outspoken about things. And I think people sometimes don't like that. It's not like I haven't thought about what I'm going to say and looked at it. It's not like I'm just saying it off the cuff without having a thought behind it. But you know what, it's early on in my career. I sort of bug me I'm not gonna lie, you know that people don't like you. Here we will have a hot everyone. Yeah, exactly. But I think I've realized, you know, a few years ago and like, you know what, I can't please everybody. And I've come across people that didn't like me. And next, you know, they, you know, whether it was in some type of study now away from the golf course. And they're like, Oh, you're actually a really good guy. I'm like, Yeah, I'm not an asshole. I'm not a dick. I mean, I'm not. I mean, I can tell you a lot of other guys on tour that you know, that are that people are think are great guys, but you know, it is what it is. And I'm happy with the people that that are my friends and support me and that's the way to always be I would bet that everyone.

especially like Jacksonville, the community you live in, you've been here 15 years, anyone spent more than one minute with Billy would be ability fan. Yeah, that's awareness. People online, they'll take the opposite side just to be loud. And you know, spark a conversation and get followers the world we live in is fucking see other day.

We're in the Bahamas, and we run into the sky down there. And he just starts sucking Billy off right away. And next thing you know, this guy's FaceTime in his buddy. And I guarantee you he texts his buddy and said, Hey, I'm here with Billy and and the guy probably didn't like you. And that's what I remember. All the texts

That were texting back texts came back and he says, yeah, he hates the Live tour. And so his buddy tells me this and I don't hate the Live tour. I said, FaceTime your buddy, let's get him on. He probably would never expect that was going to happen. Yeah, you know, FaceTime home, like listen, I don't hate the Live tour. I never said I hate to live tour and go back and look at all my comments. I haven't said anything bad about the Live Tour. I've only call it up guys that have you know, said some BSAP credit. And I said in all my comments I've been I'm happy for the guys that made a financial decision that you know, takes care of the family, you know themselves or kids whatever it may be, like I'm happy to make a lot of money. You know, some part of me wishes I could make that decision and maybe go down the route that they made a decision but the reason I play the game and we what I want to accomplish, you know, in the game of golf, I just couldn't get myself to wrap it doesn't match up. It just didn't make sense for me to make a decision solely based off of financial reason.

And you have a very good learning is and it never seen him and Krishna bill in the same place and settle. He has Christmas morning energy every freaking day. It's infectious.

So that's a pot I was gonna pick on and I've spoken to you guys, man. It's like, you know, horses out there, put himself out there. There's how much he loves his life. I could go through every single person I know. And really upset this lot will be at the top of the list for actually being sincere. A lot of people out there, you know, you're seeing the 1% of their life. Yeah, Billy's the way he broadcasts himself is him I've we've been lucky enough to hang out with family and kids and stuff. And everyday wakes up. Guys got a smile on his face. And I think people don't like that because they don't like their own life. Not to go DP. Yeah, but I honestly think that's why sometimes your target people don't like themselves. They see you're happy and chirpy. And you know, makes them feel worse about themselves.

No, but I mean, it was one of those things where I mean, I'm really picky how a hat looks on me. I'm really picking out a hat looks I'm really picky about how the brim is, is bent. And if it's even and symmetrical and, and the hats weren't bad that we had, we went so but I'm like, You know what, I'm gonna wear a hat early in the week. You know, one thing I want to get a little tan on the forehead. So when we do take some shots and with the day I was like you were thinking about Photoshop. Oh, hell yeah. I don't I try not I don't miss a beat very often. Yeah. And then you know what I'm like, I'm just gonna wear hat. Just go hatless. You know, and I loved it. But obviously I didn't. I wasn't making any putts. And I'm like, Well, I'm put a hat on Sunday. Like, I haven't played the way I wanted. I'm putting a hat on. And I thought it was gonna get me you know, get me back in my little flow and it went the complete opposite way. I'm like, God damn, I should have put a hat on. I should have wore it. No, go on one more day without a hat.

I mean, I am I am to a certain point I'm not as maybe you know, like a Fitzpatrick is more you know, writing down stuff and everything but I'm very aware of stats of like having information.

And analytics played a because I think they talk to you a little bit at the President's cup. Only playing, not playing you. You I know you're a team player. You want special things. But if I had you on my team, you would play five matches.

Yes, no question and Subash national team. Go ahead, humans Sebastian Munna as I was, like, I was shocked on so it's always 2020. But I was like these two guys that just fire it up.

Get going. I'm sure most of the guys on the team are fired and they have to be fired up. But do you think and analytics played a role in you not playing by matches?

Billy Horschel  10:19  
I knew I wasn't going to play five matches. I was very aware of that. I mean, you don't who did? Like JT and Jordan played all five matches. And the September.

Link was on team just similarly.

I think there was only two guys that played all five. No, my bad and Cameron. I think Cameron young Kim Young played all five. I think those were maybe the three guys that played all five matches.

Have you played well at Quail Hollow before?

Billy Horschel  10:43  
I've only had played there twice. 2011 and PGA. I think they both finishes were like 20 to 30. Somewhere around there. Not much. Not a lot of sets on it. I think I knew I was gonna play. I wasn't going to play all five. You know, when you get picked? You know, when you're looking at everything. Obviously, I was like the 11th guy in the 11th guy, you know, and since of the pecking order my opinion, which is fine, which I was very well, well, where I thought that I was going to play foursomes over for ball. I thought I've always been a better ultimate shot partner, or since partner drives the ball well, steady. Well, you know, I thought that would be the way you know where the matches I would play. I was sort of shocked when they say I was gonna play for ball. I call the week before because I hadn't heard very much information of what formats I was going to play. And I just want to be prepared. And they told me for ball and I was trying to understand a little bit more. But you know, get there that week and you talk to a stats guy that they use and they use. You don't know, more they use. They use a company and it's like three guys there. They've used them for the last couple team matches, and we've been successful. So you can't.

Yeah, it has nothing to do with the quality of play. It's freaking yards.

Scott Riley  11:50  
How do they pair you up? As far as you went out with home, I believe you.

Billy Horschel  11:54  
Yeah, no. Yeah, I went home with the first match, and then burns and the next one. So do you sort of had a pod system, I had a pod system. And my pod was Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns based off, um, they run millions of different scenarios. If you play with this guy, how's that affect other guys? We had a lot of success. And so I just and they were couldn't figure out who the fourth guy was going to be. I was sort of like an oddball, I guess, in the sense of who could repair Billy up because they wanted to keep scouting Sam together in the four ball on Friday. So he said, Hey, you want to play with him? I said, Hell yeah. I was one of the guys I wrote down on my sheet before Presidents Cup Of the three guys you want to play with? And he was one of them. And I said, Dude, the guy's good. Stripes, it become an unbelievable player. And he played unbelievably well. I mean, we didn't play great, you know, together all 80 holes, but we handled that very well. And, and I knew, I just kept telling him, I'm like, Man, you do to make a pot, like you're gonna do something special here. And Mike kept it close. They're sort of towards the end. And then he came up and stepped up big on 1718. When, when we need it, amen. It was awesome. And I think that I mean, I told him this after president's cup, he's gonna want to major next year, I think. I mean, if it's not next year, his record is not great. And man, you know what I know. And but I think he's developed himself as a player, I think when you look at, you know, what's held him back, because maybe short game pudding, I think now he's become a really solid in those areas. So I would suspect him in the next couple of years to have a chance to win a major if not win one, it wouldn't shock me at all. And so play with him. And then, obviously, so I was gonna play with Sam on Saturday afternoon, still wasn't sure who was going to play with but they didn't make a decision before they had to put a team and how you're playing with Sam, which played with him for love the kid death, big fan of his and so we had a good match against Scottie and Cam Davis and, unfortunately, lost that. But I think going back to the stats and the way they do things, it's I don't say it's wrong, because obviously, they've been successful, how they pair guys together, and they come up with the stats and everything else. But I sort of gave him some information based off what my stats guy does, on a weekly basis, to, you know, perform well to have a chance to win and finish top 10. I said, Hey, this may also be another little added facet of how you guys pick a team, how you guys, you know, look at a golf course, because of a historic data, what are the key attributes to play? Well, there and so I asked these questions to these guys. And they honestly didn't really have an answer. When I asked these questions. You're the only one asking. And so which is fine, but I mean, I was just trying to you know, for the team aspect of it and for future Cup teams, I was like, hey, you know, you guys may also want to add this into your your algorithm and your your ways you do things just to maybe even give us another little edge going forward.

Getting like Moneyball, yes, analytics, but you know, the data, the analytics are there, but if you love it, if you club it's not squared impact exactly. You can.

You can do everything right with the analytics and do everything. And if you're not hitting it, well, you're not playing well. I think it's worth doing matter.

For clarify, I do think it's worth doing getting the data try making decisions from the data, but the end of the day It's uh.

Yeah, but don't give him any credit. That's where I draw. That's not sure enough. It's you guys aren't hitting shots.

Well, exactly. I agree. I mean, you know, it's marker. I think it can help. It is a benefit but in the day it comes down to the player and executing the golf shots and you're feeling Patrick Kent leans in the shop we don't play well that week. And JT and Jordan don't play well that week. It doesn't really matter at the end of the day, because, you know, we didn't play well. Even if we had the perfect lineup every day.

Yeah, well, the guy who's just having a day he's seven right under himself.

Perfect example. I mean, we played I think the stats guys told us Sunday morning. Like if we would have played any other Team Samurai on Saturday, we would have won, you know, like, we in two or something like that would have been like ran into a bustle. Oh, yeah. I mean, I just got played. I think we we made a turn to up maybe or one up and I don't think we parked a hole on the backside.

You cannot get into the biggest misconception on the PGA tour that Adam Scott's a bad putter. 

Billy Horschel  15:59  
N ow he made some great points and he you know what is that?

He stands for, he's a great putter, not mazing for my four and five feet. He is one of the best on the PGA.

He's great outside the 15 feet I mean.

Unbelievable leading things to is you see a world class player miss a short putt and it just gets like I remember when Camilo and Vic just coming out of college, and he was playing really well. But he'd get on TV start playing good. And he'd miss like a three footer and it was oh, well it's paddings is Achilles heel. And it's like that guy makes more notes on the letters than anyone in the world. What are you talking about?

Billy Horschel  16:33  
Well, it's like Tony female is a perfect example. 20 Female outside 10 feet is an awesome pot. I think the stats would show that really great putter you're gonna have inside 10 feet. He's not he's not very good. Yeah, I mean, he's gotten better, but outside 10 feet, he's an unbelievable putter head speed away, he makes putts and everything, but you get them inside that, you know, six, eight foot range. Yeah, it's funny that you know, the confidence sort of changes, but he's made some big strides over the last year because I think I mean, I've actually seen him now even though he may not be making as much six eight footers. As everyone feels like the way he puts in the way he looks in the way he goes about it. You look like he he's got the confidence that he knows he's gonna make this pot instead of before. It's like, oh, he looks like he's scared to hit this pot.

Yeah, the other misconception too is like, what is actually the average on tour. So if you're watching the last three or four groups on Saturday and Sunday, those are the best that week. Normally the best putters are the best players, you know, three out of four or four or five. But if you get a look at the actual stats of like seven footers made. I think the general audience would be shocked. We said a little bit during the PGA TOUR LIVE watching guys at eight 9am Just most pros don't make many putts unless they're, you know, obviously in the last three or four.

It's funny. I mean, our college coach said that earlier on to us he's like, because you know, you always see guys who playing well, they hit it to 10 feet. 12 feet. Yeah,

But, yeah, Alex Yeah, we gotta get in there. Georgia, Georgia, southern boy, Florida.

Uou know, from like, 185 20 yards and like 1515 feet like God, he's just so good. Like, I got to hit that close. And he said, listen, they're the best players like price. He said, they're the best players that week playing the best on their on their best week. If you go watch a guy who barely made the cut. For you, he's missing the green hitting the 40 feet, buddy. same

Holds true for like clutch shots down the stretch. Whenever you see a guy in the final group like stiff one on the last. He's clearly playing with that. Yeah, there's reason for that.

It's, but I need to like, hindsight is always 2020. But leading that into the psychology of how you judge yourself. A lot of people do, like a lot of guys get out there and they hit it to 30 feet like, fuck, you know, the average is 30 feet from you.

But there's all kinds of 30 feet, there's like show out 30 feet, there's like that was just terrible. I had no clue what I'm doing.

The feet will say bounce. I'll see some of the best players in the world hit a shot that oh my god, they're probably not that happy with that. But they're like, I think the understanding is they Hey, that's not that bad. I can still hold a 12 footer even that was a wedge and I had my perfect number 12 was not horrific. If I had my perfect number, here's a 12 foot I'd act like I hit it to 40 foot I don't know if I was insecure trying to make people but even like better than I was but you need to have the reality of what's average.

For example is memorial this year those greens were so firm and I remember having to pitching wedges on Sunday on number three years back right pen they change the green so it was no bunker now if you come up short, you're in the water and I've got a one what do I have? I have like 132.

Aron Price  19:29  
Because you missed one, Id one Id Yeah, load up.

Billy Horschel  19:32  
And I have to lane this within like four yard skinny area and I'm like if I'm off by two yards long I'm in the back bunker and I may be on down so tough to get up and down. If I'm a yard or two shorter that then I'm possibly come up short the water. So I literally played 40 feet left the hole a gave me a 12 a 13 yard Lane area, couldn't get it close. And I just played 40 feet and I did the same thing at number number 14 on the backside because the wind was in I was in between clubs. So wasn't a perfect club, perfect number where I could be like, hey, well one here, you know, I know I'm gonna leave it within a certain number and, you know, just played out left and it doesn't look anything special because I hit the 40 feet or 35 feet, but it's like, hey, that golf shot.

Those are the hardest shots to hit. Oh, you don't practice aiming for up to Windows. So even if you know you're alright, this is a swing I'm gonna make I'm aimed here, right here. You're thinking, Man, that pin is 40 feet. Right? Where I'm aiming right now.

You know, especially to I think it's I think it's a little bit easier when the pins to the right sort of like, Oh, I'm just gonna sort of like, push that one a little more to the right. It's easier to play a push. Yeah, cool. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, exactly.

And I'm over in London, and I went out with some buddies after playing golf, and we're just hanging out the course and went out to dinner. And I'm like, oh, man, I gotta sit in this. Like, I gotta get to him like the next morning. And I'm like, Okay, well, I'm just gonna do it. And yeah, I looked exhausted. I looked like I was, you know, like, late night watching. Again, people were like, you know, while this stuff doesn't work, because obviously you you look like you're, you know, you're on something right now. And I'm like, No, I'm just so tired and hungover.

And so So yeah, I mean, you didn't, it wasn't great lighting and everything. And then the other one I did at my house. And so listen, I'm invested in the company. I think most golfers are athletes, but it is a sport you can be genuinely pretty uncoordinated and be successful. Yeah, so that's why golfers get a bad rap. But I think 80 75% of the guys on the PGA Tour you give them football or baseball You're gonna throw I can throw baseball. Yeah.

I mean, listen, I was I was a fairly good baseball player growing up. I'm obviously gonna be more cocky and say, Yeah, I was really good. We know you're holding. Yeah, I am. And so, I mean, my brother played junior college baseball. My dad played division one football. My uncle's played division one football. I mean, I come from a very athletic side of the family. And I actually was trying to figure out before I went to high school, did I want to play baseball or golf, focus on it, and I broke my elbow, going to baseball and I just sort of said, Hey, maybe that's a sign that golf is it but like, I love baseball, I love baseball growing up. I played it all the time. We play travel ball. You know, we were doing all year long.

My dad's had the beard pretty much his entire life. I saw him I think I've only seen him twice without the beard. It was probably like middle school or high school. I came home and walk in. There's a guy on the couch and he doesn't have like Who the hell's this guy? So he had shaved because he had some skin stuff that he could get removed off him. So he had to shave and similar situation. Probably five years ago, something you know how to shave, but he's always had a beard. I mean, there's photos of him back in like the late 70s, early 80s. He looked like Grizzly Adams, like real big beard. It was red. He had the long hair here. That was curly and everything. I mean, just Grizzly Adams all the way. Wow. He's He's my dad's 71 Now you still work Sarah? My dad's still in good shape. Great shape. I mean, my dad listen. It's funny. Like, I think my boys got my my dad's side of the jeans more than my, my brother, my younger brother. And I did. I mean, my dad and all his uncle's was six to six, three, they all their hands are just massive. And awesome. Yeah. And so hopefully actually need the big dudes. But yeah, I mean, like, we've got you can't buy high. No, you can't. And so no, but he's got that structure and just being just a big, big kid already at you know, turns for a couple months. But yeah, it's my brother. I got a little bit of that. But I think little man's got it all.

Do you think you are a bigger deal in the US or the UK?

I'll say I think I'm a bigger deal in the UK. I need to Yeah, I mean, I think just embracing the culture and embracing their sports winning over there. I've always loved their humor. I've always loved their their honesty, their boot, honestly, that they give also winning where you want. Like, yeah, it was a big deal flagship event equivalent to the NZBC on the pitch. Yeah, being a big West Ham supporter and carrying the bag over there a couple years ago, just you know, just really made it. You know, just sort of submit that.

Yeah. So can I tell? I mean, yeah, I think that how to really get into soccer. We had just had Liam in the mornings, the English Premier League, we'd be on. This is all time. And I was still wager, practicing at TVC. And I would be like, Billy, I found a loophole. And in gaming, you can just bet the heavy favorites in the EPL and never lose. It's like short term investing minus 600. Just lay six grand and win a Grand. Well, yeah.

He didn't do I mean I felt like you know took a job in the players and he needed to earlier but I think they've got a good squad they got a good attacking and midfield players on their team. I think the worry for them is some of their backline which James being out is a big problem for them not having him. He's unbelievable right back. But I think they've got some they've got this they've got the ability they got the players, I think they've got to sort of freed up and I think southgate's got to play, you know, not play so, so close to the vest a little bit. You got to sort of let it happen. You know, go out and play like you can't lose, because I think even doesn't matter what happens in this World Cup. I think he's done as as a manager for England.

And when we're driving down one day drive back and I always looked over there see who is all out there. See everyone and next you know I just sort of look up look over there and there's this lady standing topless I'm like, hey, well, movies are out what's going on? Oh no big deal. Yeah. Oh, I mean, she was good looking. But I mean there was probably 100 people this park you know just laid out everywhere and you know, I'm just like completely different the way the culture is over there that.

And then Mark Noble who is a West Ham legend Mr. West Ham as he's called and then Declan Rice who 43 year old kid who if you were compared you know what he would be on the PGA Tour he's you know, he's like Colin more a cow. He's got his Scheffler Sam Burns, he's that good girl ready? He's gonna win some unbelievable stuff with a European.

Because like, when you know when I started getting to know Mark noble and Declan rice, like they thought, like they were like, they thought it was a big deal. And I'm like you are and I'm like, and I'm thinking no you guys play. Let's play for a Premier League team. I'm always saying team Sports and an individual and team sports always bigger than, than us golfers I think, you know golf is. I mean, just because we we grew up was nerdy, like, you know, all the nerds played golf.

Um, you know, wherever I go, I'm somewhat recognized probably others more so than others. But what man? Exactly. Christian Bale.

My theory isn't that so if you if you win the Superbowl, right, you're with a bunch of other players 43 Guys, coaches, you're out as a big team celebration that drags on, then you have this memory with all these guys. You win a golf tournament, you know, the next Thursday or the next tournament and you've taught to be humble, so it doesn't drag on and you don't see yourself as this you know, prolonged Super Bowl champion like you want to Wentworth, you guide the European tour DP World to his champion for you. You don't see yourself as I do, because you get to the next week and it's nothing so that's why I think golfers don't view themselves as the rock stars that other sports does who have a great understanding of what it takes to be that good.

So that is in our sport, I think are just like, recognizable and rock stars and obviously, it's Tiger. Yeah, Tiger can't go anywhere. And then Rory Rory, obviously, just as a massive wherever he goes, he's got a massive, massive following of people wanting to watch him play and everything. And so, yeah, I mean, it's just weird like that a little bit. But yeah, it's been fun and all getting to know guys and you know, someone asked me the other day like, what are you a bigger fan of Florida Gators are West Ham United. I'm like, Oh my gosh. Oh, that's tough. That's tough.

You know, we started out Utah was we played Utah was in London. I I stayed up all night till 4am watching that game.

No, that was no, but yeah, I mean, it's tough. I mean, I love both them. And I mean, I would I do anything to be a part of those, obviously, you know, support them until they die. So yeah, I mean, it's what seems right there in line with the Florida Gators. Um, I grew up a Florida Gator fan.

And always will be what are you dealing with the golf team over there? Like, what kind of message? Is it? case to case basis? Or do you talk to all of them? Like,

Yeah, so I was over there a couple days ago, talking to the team. And, you know, just sort of, you know, the big message was like, Hey, listen, you guys have improved in a year, since I've, since you know, I was named assistant volunteer coach, but it's not because of me. I only see him maybe three or four times a year. It has a lot with what Dudley Hart who is, in his second year, what he's done with a team and what JC has been doing, but my message is sort of, you know, the way JC and duds puts it is very similar to what they say. But it's obviously coming from someone who's playing right now. Right? And I'm like, Hey, listen, if you guys want to be the best you can be if you guys want to, you know win a national title, you guys got to do the right thing. Just got to put the time in. You can't just sort of slack off and and say I'll do this the next day or whatever. And I said, Listen, there's times you know, you work three weeks straight getting after it, and you've had some good tournaments and you've got like four or five days off, you know, you can just hang out, no, go ahead and burn off some steam. You know, go out and live the college lifestyle. You know, we did that. But I've just sort of said, like, if you want to be good at this game of golf, you want to play the PGA Tour. Like, it's not just like, Oh, I'll go do this. And that's it. Like, you got to grind hard at it. And there's some obviously I've talked to Abby, you know, some of these guys individually differently. We text messages. Some of them have texted me last couple of days, some thoughts and I just try and help them out in any way can hopefully help them get better. So there's really no no secret, you know, formula I'm giving them I'm just saying hey, like, yeah, you guys got to still continue to push harder. You still got to represent the Florida Gators the right way. I mean, we want to win a national title. We haven't won a national title since 2001. We have one sec since 2000. I think 11 or 13. Yeah. So it's been a while in golf. And so I mean, I don't think if they were able to win a national title sec, you know, this year, even if I wasn't part of a team, I know Matt would feel the same like we would feel. I mean, we would feel so proud and to be a part of you know, just a Florida Gator culture and say we are Florida Gators and be proud of the boys so um, yeah, it's just there for me to they want to bounce ideas off of asked me questions.

It's not like feeling right and since getting the mind right like a mind is already right with what I want to do it's just getting my hands on the club the right way and getting the right setup and the posture and and I was like well just grip the club let's put it the same way yeah, just get the put your hands on it and it should feel the same every time like it does it i Sorry, like I understand some guys like I'm jealous of guys that are able to just put their hands on a club step in there and go like DJ I love and I just started you know get the hands in there and sometimes it's I get it on there right away and other times I've got to sort of melt the club a little bit last Sergio Garcia it's a hate the feeling of taking too long get a hands on but it's just I want it to be like a comfortable the shot and I'm good to go before I hit it right.

It's funny when I go back to that and think about it. Obviously I was a good Junior. I wasn't highly recruited. I only had two scholarship offers one to community college and my hardware I lived on which was a really good JUCO program. And then Florida came in late and offered me a small scholarship. You know, I had UCF FSU, couple other schools, sort of, you know, interested but nothing materialized from there. But I was just so excited born and raised a Florida Gator fan was excited to go there. I think I'd play with Matt the summer before and USL amateur qualifier the fun around.

At that age. Did you have goals Allah, hey, I want to win. My goal in PGA tour I go.

Growing up was I wanted to be a professional athlete, like I wanted to be a professional athlete. And I knew I was going to be professional athlete. I didn't know what it was. And then when I obviously stuck to golf, the goal was to get to the PGA Tour. But when I got to Florida, I knew where it was in total boy, they were like 12 or 13 guys on a team. I was probably the limit the 12 best player at the time on the team when I got there. And I was that I shocked I said to myself, I said if I can qualify for a tournament at Florida, that means I'm one of the best players in the country.

Based on my experience, because you had Matt ever he was a first team all American. Yeah, but Stegmaier James Vargas, Jesse Mudd, Ryan Cochran, I'm forgetting else who was on the team when I got there. But I was like, man, these guys are great veteran players, they had just one sec title a couple years ago. And I'm like, Man, if I can just qualify for a tournament and beat these guys and make the team. That means I'm one of the best players in the country. And so when I went to I qualified for our first event, and I went to the tournament where, you know, as a freshman as a freshman first one of the year. But Alexander, I guarantee it. If you got him on here, he would have said Billy Horschel is more likely going to redshirt this year. And he has said they said, you know, obviously I'll give you an opportunity to and we're gonna strangle him.

And we're gonna spear him and we're gonna put up a muzzle on him. But yeah, I qualified. And I went to that event like, Hey, I'm one of the best players there. And there were some really good teams with some really good players and I finished top 10 I don't think I finished outside the top 10 the rest of it with all the farm. We went Inverness, and one we went to Shoal Creek.

I remember this so well. Avernus are going to dinner one night and you were so excited because you could play well. Yeah, playing well. Jesse Mudd did not play well. And were you were like, coach, we were going for dinner. Just he's like, shocked. You know?

I think I finished like, I don't know what I finished that. We weren't 18 I hit it into the greenside bunker on 18. And I still wasn't like I was good, but I still didn't have all the shots and so there was a back left pin on a plateau or a tear, and it was like a 25 yard bunker shot and the only bunker I had at a time was flight all the way to the whole spin and check it. So I catch it then it goes over the green. I make double. We're trying to win the team title. I'm like, fuck, I may have just caused us to self the team. But he comes over and Buddy being buddies like, what? No one hit the fucking chunk and run there. No. And I said, I said I don't know how to. He said, Well, we'll work on that. And I knew we were tight with whoever we were competing against. And Matt, I think Matt and Steggy came through. I think I won. He did win that tournament. Yeah. And so I was like a kid in a candy shop heading back to the fucking plane. And I was calling people on the ride back. And I remember Buddy the next day or someone's like, Hey, listen, I understand your excitement and everything. Let's not fucking do that, because everyone else has a Christmas morning.

That's what and I'll tell this story to the first semester. I played Matt pretty much every day for money. Whenever we played, we played, you know, qualifying rounds. And I'm not afraid to admit this, because I'm like, sure I'll do it. He would give me shots. Every day when we played he was still kick mine. That's right.

And I was like, can you give me shots? It's nice to say something to you would give us all there was a guy before I got there that we play Camilo. Every day, Camila was a world beater and polish. And he play him every day for $5. And this guy was like, back in the pack. You're gonna get better doing that. And everyone would say, Dude, why are you playing this guy for five bucks every day? And you guys like I'm I'm getting a four and a half hour lesson before I vote for $5.

Billy, it didn't take you long. Like you said you got there. First semester. You you found your role or a spot on that team made it for yourself. Got in tight with Matt. I came down there. I don't know if you remember this. It was Florida's playing Tennessee. And I want to say it was urban Meyer's, like first year, their second year, second year. And was that your freshman year? Or your freshman? Yeah, yeah. Yeah. I mean, you were like one of the guys and that was that was September of that. I mean, you'd been on campus, maybe just a couple of weeks.

I think. I mean, obviously, Matt was great. And I tell people I said, Matt was a big influence on me, like, took me on his wing, obviously treated me like a little brother. I mean, he treated me like a little brother.

I take away all kinds of everyone.

But obviously I gravitated towards Matt, best player in the team. And he was awesome. And, you know, Matt taught me some great things. And Matt taught me some bad things taught me online poker and gambling, and how to do all this stuff. In my dorm room to 3am in the morning playing Oh, there was some pros and cons. No, but it was great. And so like I said, I think, you know, the thing being around Matt was just his confidence in himself in the way. And can I get that back? And it was awesome to see on the golf course. And, you know, when he was going like, there was no no stop. And, um, and I mean, we both played really well the final round. I mean, I wish we could go back to Nationals. And my freshman year we played a third round because we were playing so good the first two days and we got a bad drawl. And, you know, we were towards in the back. We played a bad back nine and some bad weather. And we played really good on Sunday. I think Matt, we teed off the back seat off the back first off the back.

And we were leading when? Yeah, when we finished we were leading Oklahoma State was just teeing off on the front. You had a really good day you hold out on 18 for two I remember.

Yeah. And you've I think we I think I shot like 65 or six six and he shot like 6667 like we played unbelievable, and I thought we were gonna win nationals.

And that's like coolest memory from college was it was at Sun River, Sun River and Oregon. The last hole I had was gonna be my last hole in college and I had like a 30 footer for birdie and we were riding this bike deal. And buddy it was in the fairway was in the fairway with me I hit my shot up he's waiting for whoever's behind me might have and Billy and he had this like umbrella seat that he always carried. You'd sit on it you know? And I made the putt and I like wasn't meaning to look at buddy but my eyes like went to the fairway and he spiked his seat in the ground. It was so cool. I was I was like crying walking off it was awesome.

It seemed like everyone was in tonight about buddy except Matt You and I remember specifically one day on the eighth hole at your course and your tournament. He got softer as I mean I remember Matt had left and you know when you get ready for tournaments or pack the van and you know just my personality like I would help pack the van or guys would be late or want to pack the van right or whatever and I want to fucking and Buddy was you know just let it go but someone told a story of him you know maybe at Georgia Southern early in Florida career just absolutely ripping into the guys are not packing the van right and because they couldn't get everything in and they were late. So I qualified for the US Open after my freshman year at Wingfoot. I played really good. The first round shot I think four or five over I've actually shot five over I started triple bogey bogey. So I was five over after three holes. And then I made 15 Straight pars. And I was in like, I mean it was it was a tough one that year. It was like top six fast golf course. And then I came out the next day and I you know obviously still young still learning things I just, you know, let the moment you know, overtake me. I'm gonna just missed the cut. But I remember going back to Gainesville and talking to a buddy and buddies like, what did you learn? And I said a couple things. I said, You think you can play out there? I said Yeah, I think three more years here of, of learning from you. You know getting better. I think I'll be able to compete out there. And so that was a first moment after playing the US Open that I was like I can make it on the PGA tour and I can be successful that moment.

No none of them Chris DeMarco, I played a practice round with him my sophomore year wherever Pinehurst and I walked off the course thinking I was going to be like nothing, you know, again, this was like this guy.
