Second Breakfast with Surf With Amigas

Are You an Over-Functioner? How Surfing Can Help You Rediscover Play

Recovering over-functioner Molly Pope explains how surf travel and rediscovering play helped her reclaim her true sense of self.  Surf retreats changed Molly Pope’s life, allowing her to play and reclaim her autonomy and independence. In her late 30s, Molly was fully focused on caring for her family, two young boys aged 3 and 6 and a husband who was a suffering alcoholic. Molly characterized herself as an “over-functioner,” someone who continually takes on more responsibilities and loses herself in caring for the needs of others as a way to help manage anxiety. After realizing she had been neglecting herself and people-pleasing for years, Molly went on her first SWA retreat in Nicaragua. This episode is all about returning to self, breaking free of codependency, embracing change and the difficulties of balancing roles as a mother or caretaker.
