How To Talk To Humans
"Story Telling" The Art of Business Communication - Part 1 #103
Larry Wilson, with his extensive 40-year background in show business, has become a leading advocate for the role of storytelling in the corporate world. Drawing from his experiences alongside renowned celebrities, Wilson champions storytelling as an essential tool for forging deep connections with audiences, a viewpoint that is central to his Wilson Method program. Inspired by thought leaders like Seth Godin, he asserts that in today's evolving business landscape, the narratives a company shares can be more influential than the products it offers. Through his podcast, "How to Talk to Humans," and his VIP group, Wilson offers practical training on communication and storytelling, underscoring their power to engage and leave lasting impressions on listeners.

Hi, this is Larry Wilson, and this is how to Talk to Humans. This is the podcast that shows you how to improve your communication skills. Are you looking to get a better job? Are you looking to find a relationship? Are you trying to do things in your life that have frustrated you and eluded you so far? I can show you so easily how to change that. Now I can only do it with humans. If you're looking to deal with vampires or zombies, extraterrestrials, this is not the show for you. But if you're really looking to improve your communication skills, I can show you what I've learned from 40 years in show business working with the biggest celebrities and superstars in the world. And their secrets are unbelievable. What I'm going to be teaching you during this course of this podcast every week are tools that you can use to communicate toward success. Hi, this is Larry Wilson. Thank you for joining me for another episode of how to Talk to Humans. I mentioned in a previous episode that someone who had taken my five day online challenge had emailed me asking me specifically for more information about a specific topic, and the topic he had in mind was storytelling. So I did, and I can't imagine a better place to go into it here in depth, although I should explain before I begin. People. Some people who've taken the five day challenge have decided they want to become part of a VIP group of mine. And they get all kinds of fantastic things, not the least of which there's two things I think that are really great they get. I created a video that I call Hollywood's Video Secrets. And it's very simple things that everyone in the film and television business knows or should know. Simple tricks that have to do with lighting and camera placement, things like that that you can do for free that will make you look so much better on camera. And since everyone seems to be moving towards video now and their presentations, I now have a video channel on YouTube, of course, and it's different material there than is here. I like the intimacy of the podcast format. It allows me to explore certain ideas that I may not do video form. But for those of you who are on video, whether it's for fun or in the case of a lot of people who are listening to this podcast business. Video, of course, is extraordinarily powerful. And the better you can make yourself appear, the more receptive people may be to your message. If you have a horrifying appearance, they may be less inclined to stick with you and watch what you have to say. So for people who've joined My VIP group, they, it's one of the things I send them because it's, it's about 25 minutes and it's very comprehensive. But I even go into what lighting equipment you can purchase if you want to beef up your production. But I, I should point out lighting now is absurdly inexpensive. You can get a incredible lighting kit, soft boxes that diffuse the light, a couple of them with stands for less than $70. These are lights that 10 years ago would have cost $1200 to have this kind of setup. It's incredible. So that's one of the bonuses. There's another bonus that I, I think I always forget to mention is that those VIP members get a coupon for a thousand dollars off any live training with me in a two day boot camp of mine, which of course is worth a thousand dollars. As I was thinking, it's $1,000 off, so that must be worth a thousand dollars. But this member of the VIP group, his name is Chris and he's really dug into the training that I do. I expect him to explode on the scene here at some point. I don't always pry into what people are using my Wilson method for, but he specifically asked me in the five day challenge we dive into storytelling, but he asked me to go deeper with it. The VIP group. There's a free monthly live zoom session where I train live. But I also will answer questions in real time as they come up. And if people send me things in advance like Chris did, asking specifically about things, then I'll address those. So it's kind of an extremely economical way to train with me live. And Chris was very concerned about storytelling and wanted to get deeper into it. And I thought that was very prescient of him because things change, trends change, habits change, the way people do. Business changes. A guy, a very, very smart guy, much smarter than me, named Seth Godin, who I think has been writing about marketing, must be 30 or 40 years now. I remember seeing something of his and I want to say it was 30 years ago called permission marketing. And it was eye opening to me. It was really quite extraordinary. And over the years I periodically see things from Seth Godin, so clever and so thoughtful about marketing and just saw recently a quote from me, he said, business has changed. Business is no longer about what you make. Business is now about the story you tell. And that just bowled me over. I was knocked out by that. Of course, I'm a hundred percent in agreement with Seth Godin. I did not realize business had changed. I didn't, I didn't perceive the depth or complexity of it that Seth Godin did. But it's very clear to me that things that may have been the style or the trend or the perceived wisdom five or ten years ago have changed. I know that people involved with my career, you can hear me editing in my head here, so I don't embarrass anyone. But people involved in my career were always very concerned that I would approach clients in a businesslike way. And I thought I was very business like. But what I think they were reacting to, what they were afraid of, was when I would launch into a story and when I tell some sort of story. Now, I know this VIP member of my group, but Chris, I met him in Las Vegas because, but totally by accident. He was standing nearby when I was telling a story to somebody else and he stepped up and introduced himself, just said, how did you do that? And I said, I don't know what we're talking about. He said that you told that story that was so incredible and blah, blah, blah. And I said, oh, oh, oh. And so I said, that's very simple. That's stuff I teach in Wilson Method. And, and we started to get into it. And so I tell you again and again on this podcast, one of my goals with Wilson Method is to teach you how to communicate with people so that you do not have to sell anything. I think that's a very old fashioned model. I don't know, I'm trying to think of the most horrible and absurd example I can think of. You know, it's, it's, it's standing outside the women's prison when they're releasing people who've done their time advertising your online dating service or something, you know, you know, ladies, looking for a man who's the perfect dream boat for you, you know, I find, of course I find that all entertaining and hilarious, but in terms of actual business, I think it's an old fashioned model to try to sell something to someone. I can only say this because of the example of my life. It doesn't mean I'm right. It doesn't mean my way is the only way. I'm just sharing with you something that's been so successful for me, even going against perceived wisdom, it's been very successful for me and I'm happy to share everything from my life. Why wouldn't I? What value does it have if I keep it? My little secret, as a side note, I'll tell you, as a performer, as a magician, my greatest strength is, is the ability I have to communicate so much of the amazing end product that I present comes directly from my communication skills and sometimes younger magicians who've seen me perform. Just recently, I was at the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood for a week and. And a number of younger performers came up to me after seeing me, and they wanted to know about a specific effect or something that I did. And I told them, I told them straight out exactly what I was doing. Not one of them believed me. They were too polite to say it, but I could tell they thought I was brushing them off, but I wasn't. I was telling them the truth. They. They were hoping I would say, oh, I've had a surgically implanted magnet in the back of my neck. That they were hoping there was some gimmick or some sort of mechanical device or something that allowed me to perform the amazing things I was doing. But it's much easier. It's so much easier. And I've said this before, I will continue saying it with performers. I don't believe it's about the material. Obviously you want really strong material, but if you're a magician, a lot of magicians think it's about the tricks. It's not about the tricks. It's about the connection you make to the audience. If you're a singer, if you're a dancer, if you're a ventriloquist, if whatever. I know a guy who does, I guess it's called speed painting, where he, as he's talking to the audience, he's painting really fast, big splashes of paint, and you sort of can't tell what he's doing. And sometimes after some very short period of time, maybe five minutes, he'll turn the canvas upside down and instantly it pops out. You see what he's painted, and it's usually people and it's instantly recognizable. You say, oh, my God, that's Mick Jagger. You just painted. And it's an incredible painting. The same thing. Yes, it's great to have these skills, and of course you want to have good skills. But what they're remembering, what's affecting them, is the connection you make in storytelling. There are two different ways we can go. You can tell a personal story that you were personally involved in. In a previous episode, I talked about going to Brooklyn V's Pizza and meeting a guy named Vinnie. Well, that was something that happened to me. Or you may tell a story about someone else or about events that you weren't personally involved with, but that you heard about or read about or somehow someone shared something with you about both ways are equally effective. They require different techniques, of course. Wow. Storytelling is so crucial to business that I went on longer than I intended. So I'm going to break this into two parts. Join me next week when I go even deeper into the art and science of storytelling. This has been Larry Wilson. I want to thank you for for spending this time with me, and I.
