Hi, this is Larry Wilson, and this is How to Talk to Humans. This is the podcast that shows you how to improve your communication skills. Are you looking to get a better job? Thanks again for joining me for another episode of How to Talk to Humans. I am prompted this week's episode by a conversation I had with my long-suffering wife. I'd say that in jest, my wife is not suffering. My wife is, I think, is very happy with the life she has. But of course, she does have to deal with me a lot of the time. And you can imagine how that might be difficult in some circumstances. Because of my bias towards communication, I don't always say stuff, but she can just tell by my physicality. If we're watching television and something happens where I think the characters on screen aren't acting like real people, where I think the writing isn't up to snuff because someone has created cartoon characters instead of realistic characters, she can tell, like I'll shift my weight, or I won't even make a sound necessarily. Now sometimes I will. Sometimes I'll say, no one in the history of humanity has ever uttered those words. It's usually a bad sign. I'm not that thrilled. But we're talking at great length because uh in some ways, we've never really talked in depth about Wilson method training, but she's uh subjected to a lot of spillover from various other things. And so she's very much aware of it. And she said to me, she said, what is it really? And I said, I don't know what you mean. She said, Really? What is Wilthameth? I said, well, you know the things that I teach, and you know the she said, yeah, yeah, but that's not what I'm talking about. And I said, well, I'm not sure what you're asking me. She said, well, she said, before you and I met many years ago, she said, I took different seminars, different things. She said, some of them, it didn't matter what they were purported to be about, she said, some of them really seemed to be just about granting permission to the people who attended to be able to do something. And I said, Oh, okay. I can see that absolutely. One example she gave was about a screenwriting class. Uh, I won't mention who the person was who was teaching it, but she said the things he talked about were all very valid, but they weren't really gonna help you be able to write a screenplay. Maybe maybe you could extrapolate some information from what he was saying, but really what was happening in the seminar that I think was not inexpensive, was the people who attended felt they had permission now to write a screenplay. And it's funny because uh psychologically that's that's a pretty big deal, if that's what's blocking you. And a lot of writers do have that difficulty. For whatever reason, they're concerned about uh they're self-consciously feeling someone is judging them or critiquing them, and it's usually themselves, it's not usually someone else. As they're writing, I wonder if any of you feel this way, that you stop yourself in the middle of writing thinking, who do I think I am to say this or write this or whatever? Maybe it's in a podcast, maybe it's not about writing, maybe it's about you appearing on camera, and you think, who wants to hear what I have to say anyway? Well, who knows? Maybe a lot of people, maybe no one. But what's the harm? What who are you hurting by doing this, right? Well, we all frequently have this feeling of self-consciously observing ourselves, and we are always our own worst critics. If you aren't, if you don't, if you don't have an experience ever of having felt that way, you're an unusual person, and I would imagine uh a dangerous person if you seriously think all the time, yes, everything I say is brilliant, I'm brilliant, what a joy just to be around me. It could be a very dangerous person. But my wife bought up this very interesting point of that sometimes people present something, maybe it's a coaching or training or instruction, but it's not exactly what it is presented to be. And I only bring this up because she said, she said, you actually teach real things that people use. I said, well, yeah, I I don't I don't have whatever that special ability is of some of these other people who are salespeople, basically, and they're incredible. They're so great, they can sell anything. My producer Scott brought this up I can't remember, out of thin air, just before we went here to record. He was talking about how weird it was about maybe 20 years ago, 25 years ago, someone somewhere convinced all the powers that be in Las Vegas that they should make it a family destination. Can you imagine how demented that idea is? Now, with the whole idea of, oh, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, I mean that was the follow-up to the disastrous campaign. But I don't just mean they printed some posters or made some ads. They invested hundreds of millions of dollars. Some of you who are too young to have been around or have been aware of this will think I'm making this up. But I am not. They built huge amusement park type rides on the strip in Las Vegas. The idea was we're going to attract families to Las Vegas now. And they'll want to ride on all these roller coasters and all these different kinds of things you would expect to see at Disneyland or Magic Mountain or something like that. Insane. Within a few years, it had crashed and burned. They lost literally, if I had to estimate, I would guess billions of dollars. There were gigantic hotels built with, I'm sure if you go online, you can find photographs. On the strip, I don't mean within a block or two, I mean on the strip in Las Vegas, these amusement parks shuttered with weeds growing up through these rides. It was like that. And I only bring this up because I was saying to Scott, whoever sold that idea is some kind of evil genius to be able to convince people who'd had Las Vegas for 50, 60, 70 years as a playground for adults. That's what it always was. That was always the idea. Sometimes I would hear people say, oh, it's like Disneyland for adults. But the idea is you would go there and do all these things you're not supposed to do at home. Drink, smoke, gamble, do all stay up all night, be irresponsible. That was the idea of Las Vegas. And that's what made it hugely successful for decades. So how did someone convince them otherwise? I don't know. But that those same people are the ones who can, for example, sell a screenwriting course that has some information about screenwriting, but really is more about giving you permission unconsciously. He doesn't come out and say that. Well, that's genius. There are other things like that where I've seen all different kinds of niches, markets where someone purports to be teaching you something, and they don't really teach it to you, but you get something else out of it. Or in some cases, maybe you get nothing out of it. Oh God, there's in Mark Twain's greatest work, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, there's a point, uh, I won't go too far into the text here, but he hooks up with two con men who convince him or trying to convince Huck, and Huck, even as a kid, is too sophisticated to fall for it, but he just goes along that they're descendants of European royal tiers. These are guys who are like hobos. They're like they're con men. And they go to con little Midwestern town that they're passing through, uh, and they put on a show called The Royal Nunsuch. And they charge, I think, uh, if I remember correctly, an outrageous fee for the show. And I think it was a dollar for the show, which in the time frame of Huckleberry Finn is an outrageous amount of money. And one of them, there are these two guys are the Duke and the Dauphin, and they make up a poster for the show, and at the bottom it says, Women and children not admitted. And one of them says, if this doesn't get them in, I don't know Missouri. And of course, they're gonna be there three nights, and the first night, it's packed. Packed house. And they come, one of them comes out and he's painted in funny colors, and he prances around, and the audience laughs for a minute. And then whatever it is they do, it's really not very much. It's a few minutes of stuff, and they come out and they say, Thank you for coming tonight. And people in the audience say, What? That's it? And they say, Yes, thank you very much, and they leave. And so the next night, Huck Finn is, we're learning all this through Huck Finn's eyes. And he said, he thought, What are they doing? And they explain to him, they say, Oh, the next night it'll be a full house again. And he said, Won't they tell people? They don't want to appear foolish. They're gonna rope all their friends in so that they're all in the same predicament. And sure enough, the next night's full. Then the third night, as they're coming in, Huck realizes there's trouble afoot. He said, if I could smell a dead cat, there must have been two dozen of them. And they've brought stuff to pelt these guys with, and he knows they're gonna be run out of town on a rail, tarred and feathered. But of course, the Duke and the Dolphin have no intention of showing up for that third night. They've already collected the money and split town. This goes back probably to the first caveman who said, I have these rocks to sell, but they're not like the other rocks around here. These rocks can tell you when it will rain or something. I don't know. My point is, there have always been con men and hucksters. But when my wife was asking me what the Wilson method really was, she said, is it a personal development or is it meant for business? And I told her, I'm always happy to point out, I said, it clearly works for both. There are plenty of people who've trained with me in my boot camp, and they really were there for personal development things, and found extraordinary results from the things they learned there. But then there are also people who learned things that they'd come for business, and uh I'm sort of not being as clear as I could be, I'll give you an example. There was a man named Patrick, it's funny, who came from Germany. Patrick's not really a German name, is it? But he flew in from Germany to train with me in the boot camp because he had a specific need with his business. In his business, he had to approach people in real life, face to face, whom he didn't know, cold, and he was very uncomfortable doing that. He felt uncomfortable physically, he felt uncomfortable mentally, he didn't know exactly what to do or how to hold himself or how to speak or what he should say. All these problems that we solved very, very quickly and easily. And he uh he seemed to have a very positive experience in the boot camp. And in fact, uh I remember I wound up giving him a ride back to Los Angeles International Airport because we did this training in Los Angeles. And in the car, just in the last few minutes, he mentioned something about his wife, and he was talking about just very casually, you know, that it was sometimes difficult to talk with her, and you know uh he asked me if I had any idea. I said, well, you know, a lot of the stuff you learned here, you might be able to. It was like really no big deal. About a month after he trained with me, and he's back in Germany, uh, he sends me a video, and I think you can probably find this on my site, you can find it somewhere, I know it's out there, uh, because I'd posted it sometime, where he said, I wanted to tell you, when I first uh thought about coming and training with you, I wasn't sure I had some reservations, would it be worth the money? Would it be worth the expense of flying from Germany and getting hotels and everything else? He said, and I have to tell you, it was so great, and I got so much, and it's made the work I'm doing so much easier, and I'm having such a great time with it, but more importantly, uh bringing in more money. He said, it was a fantastic experience, and I'm thinking, oh good. He said, But something unexpected happened. He said, I've been back a couple of weeks when I realized that my wife and I were talking about things we hadn't talked about in 12 years of marriage. He said, I didn't realize at first, it's because I was doing all these Wilson method techniques. He said, they're so natural that they just become part of your normal daily life. They become automatic that you're doing them, which, of course, is the idea. I don't want you to have to screw your brain down and think, oh, how am I gonna do it? It's supposed to be very natural, and if you practice them regularly, day after day, it becomes easier and easier and easier. But Patrick had such a profound experience. Now, I know I'm supposed to be focused on business, but personally, I was just delighted to hear that from him. I thought, what a great thing. I should also point out, for those of you who are cynics, um he he wasn't saying we're we're talking about things we never talked about and now we're ready to kill each other. No, he's talking about how much better his relationship with his wife was and his marriage, how much uh happier he was, how much happier she was, how there were certain feelings of peace and tranquility in his home. And it was all just because of the way he was communicating with her. So, yes, Wilson method is intended specifically for people involved in business, but communication is human. If you happen to be a human, then it's liable to spill over into your personal life. But it can't have a negative effect because it's helping you connect with other humans on an authentic level. And maybe it's as simple as you smiling at someone when you purchase a cup of coffee. Maybe that's all that's different. Well, that's not liable to change your life so much. It certainly isn't going to affect your business. But it might make someone else feel good, might make you feel good, I don't know. It might be more profound than that. It might be like this guy Patrick, it might be involving your most important relationships, could easily be. But it makes perfect sense to me because although it is intended for business, it is about human skills. On a previous episode of this podcast, I know I I think I made reference to the rapid ascent of AI. I think it's great, I think it's fantastic. But it will never, ever replace human contact. It can substitute for it, it can be a rough approximation of it, but it can never really take the place of human contact.
