CHELLIE: When I was a teenager, one of the defining movies of my generation was The Breakfast Club.
Five high school students.
One Saturday detention.
And one big assumption about who each of them was.
The Brain.
The Athlete.
The Princess.
The Criminal.
The Basket Case.
I remember watching it and thinking, “Yep. That’s exactly how high school works.”
But what I didn’t realize at the time is that it’s also how adulthood works.
We don’t stop labeling people when we graduate.
We just change the language.
The Labels We Carry
In the workplace, we still label.
The high performer.
The difficult one.
The creative.
The quiet one.
The micromanager.
The emotional one.
The future leader.
The one who’s “not quite ready.”
And sometimes… we label ourselves.
“I’m just the communications person.”
“I’m not the numbers type.”
“I’m not cut out for leadership.”
“I’m just the support role.”
But here’s what that movie revealed so powerfully.
No one was just one thing.
The athlete was scared of disappointing his father.
The brain was terrified of failing.
The princess felt unseen.
The criminal was reacting to neglect.
The basket case felt invisible.
Their behavior made sense once their story was heard.
And that’s the leadership lesson.
Most Organizations Are One Conversation Away
The entire movie takes place in one room.
No phones.
No distractions.
Just conversation.
And slowly, as they talk honestly, the walls come down.
Assumptions soften.
Respect grows.

Most organizations are one honest conversation away from transformation.
But here’s the catch.
Honest conversations require vulnerability.
And vulnerability requires safety.
And safety requires leadership.
You don’t build strong culture by managing performance alone.

Delete the Label

What label are you carrying that you’ve outgrown?
What label have you assigned to someone else that might be incomplete?
Because you are not just your title.
You are not just your mistake.
You are not just the perception someone formed in one meeting.
And neither is anyone on your team.
If you want stronger culture…

If you want trust…
Start with curiosity.
Replace assumption with conversation.
And maybe — just maybe —
delete the label.
