Five Things I Won’t Outsource to AI
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
AI can help us work faster, organize better and do more with the time we have.
But there are some things Chellie Phillips believes we should never hand over.
In this episode of 5 for 55, Chellie shares the five things she won’t outsource to AI:
- Judgment
- Point of view
- Relationships
- Stories
- Responsibility
From using AI to research, organize ideas and improve efficiency to knowing where the human line should remain, this episode explores the difference between using technology as a tool and allowing it to replace the very qualities that make our work meaningful.
AI can assist us.
It can amplify us.
It can help us work smarter.
But it cannot experience our lives, build our relationships or take responsibility for the decisions made in our name.
The goal isn’t to avoid AI.
It’s to know which parts of yourself aren’t available for outsourcing.

Welcome to Five for 55 with Chellie Phillips, the quick weekly podcast where, in five minutes or less, you'll discover one idea, one lesson, and one small shift to help you communicate with confidence, lead with purpose, and keep growing. Because there's no speed limit on growth.
Chellie Phillips:I use AI almost every day, and I'm not embarrassed to tell you that. I use it to research, organize ideas, edit, build timelines, think through processes, and make connections I might have missed. As someone building a business without a full staff behind me, it gives me access to capabilities I couldn't reasonably hire for individually, but there are five things I want outsourced to it. Number one, my judgment. AI can give me information. It can show me options. It can even challenge an assumption. But ultimately, I have to decide what I believe, what matters, and what action I'm willing to take, AI doesn't eliminate the need for judgment. If anything, it makes good judgment more important. Number two, my point of view. AI can help me say something better, but I still need to have something to say, my opinions come from years of experience, from conversations I've had, mistakes I've made, people I've watched, rooms I've been in, lessons I've learned. Those experiences belong to me. AI can help me communicate those experiences. It cannot experience them for me. Number three, my relationships. AI can summarize a meeting. It can capture everything that's said by my team or in a staff meeting, while allowing me to stay more present in the conversation. That's truly useful, but it can't replace sitting around the table together. It can't replace knowing who's struggling, or who's ready for a bigger challenge, or who has ideas they're afraid to say out loud, or who needs somebody to believe in them. Technology can support relationships; it cannot have them for us. Number four, my stories. The best material I have usually starts with something that actually happened-a conversation, a workshop, a mistake, a memory, a ridiculous moment that suddenly taught me something about leadership. AI may help me find the lesson hiding inside that story, but it wasn't there. I I was, and finally number five, my responsibility. If my name is on it, I own it. I can't say, well, AI told me. The tool doesn't get to carry the consequences of what I put out into the world. I do. I have to verify information, question conclusions, think critically. Make sure the finished product represents what I actually believe. AI can assist me. It cannot be accountable for me. And maybe that's the larger lesson here. For a lot of us, the question isn't whether we'll use AI. We already are. The better question is whether we'll use it to become more capable humans, or whether we'll slowly start handing over the very qualities that make our work human in the first place. Use the tools, take the efficiencies, let AI help you work smarter. Just don't outsource the parts of you that make the work yours. Those are my five at 55.
