Busting Surrogacy Myths part 2

Surrogacy myths are everywhere. Whether you're an Intended Parent or a Surrogate, you've likely encountered misinformation that can be both frustrating and hurtful. In a previous Surrogacy Talk, which I'll link to this segment, I go into great detail and debunk many other myths. Things like surrogacy is only for the wealthy, or Surrogates are only in it for the money. These are misconceptions that are quite damaging, and it's important that we use our platform to speak on truth and reduce the spread of misinformation, because there's a lot of misinformation going around nowadays. But we want you to pursue your surrogacy journey with correct information and be able to provide correct information when called upon. Very, very important. So without further ado, let's continue this series Busting Surrogacy Myths part two.

Myth number one: 1:43

the Surrogate is the baby's biological mother. In a gestational surrogacy, the Surrogate has no biological relation to the baby that she's carrying. The embryo is not created using her egg, so it's impossible. The Surrogate is not related to the baby at all. In a gestational surrogacy.

Myth number two: 2:05

Surrogates can change their mind and keep the baby. Absolutely not. Since the Surrogate has no biological relation to the baby that she's carrying, she has no legal framework or grounding in order to keep the baby or even to contest parentage. The legal arrangement is made before the pregnancy to outline who the baby belongs to, which is that of the Intended Parents. So there's a contract in place. Parentage is filed with the courts. This is.

Myth number three: 2:40

surrogacy is only for infertile couples. Well, that is entirely false because look at me. I am part of the LGBTQ community and couples in my same demographic, the only way that we can create our families is through the help of surrogacy, and the wonderful women that are generous enough to be Gestational Surrogates and egg donors. So entirely false. As well as, let's not forget, single individuals and those with health conditions that are not necessarily related to an infertility diagnosis. So yet again, this myth is absolutely busted.

Myth number four: 3:22

surrogacy isn't natural. This is entirely, entirely false. An entirely hurtful for those that rely on surrogacy to create their families. Just because surrogacy isn't traditional doesn't mean that it's not natural. The process, itself still relies on a biological process of creating embryos, of fertilizing eggs, of pregnancy. To say that a woman going through birth as a Gestational sSurrogate is not somehow experiencing that birth in a natural way, to say that the process is not natural because it isn't, quote unquote traditional is just entirely false., and as I said, hurtful, and it's demeaning, and this myth is garbage. In conclusion, my final thought on these myths is that while it may seem innocent because they are perhaps misunderstandings, or they may come across as harmless. They're not. They are hurtful. They are dangerous. They fuel unnecessary stigma. And what's worse is they cause emotional pain. For those who sometimes only have surrogacy as a means to building their family. And even worse, myths like these can negatively impact public policy and law, which then put surrogacy out of reach for many, which is simply unacceptable. This is why it is important for people like myself and others, that have a platform with credible information to stamp out these myths whenever and wherever possible. Thank you so much for tuning in.
