The Earth has been far hotter than this before. Fifty million years ago there were crocodiles in the Arctic, and for most of this planet's history there was no ice at the poles at all. So why does this time matter? That question deserves a real answer, and this episode is where the Heat series steps back and gives one.

The answer isn't the heat. It's the speed. The fossil record has run this experiment twice — one hot world that arrived gradually and filled with life, and one cooler world that arrived fast and became the worst extinction the planet has ever had. We look at how scientists know this warming is ours, at the two buffers that have quietly been absorbing the damage and are now failing, and at the strange discovery that came from pointing a wildlife research tool at human beings. It fit. We have only ever lived inside two narrow bands of temperature, and we never noticed, because we have never once been outside them.
