Then this episode is your wake up call and hopefully your month by month plan to actually be able to move abroad next year. So that's what we're doing. We're creating a month by month plan That is your plan to be able to move abroad next year. So hopefully by the end of this episode, you'll have a timeline that you can actually follow. One that helps you to go from dream to actually departing the United States or whatever country you're from, and moving abroad by the end of 2026. So grab your calendar or open your planner app because I want you to actually write down these steps. I want you to not just talk about it or think about it, but to actually schedule it in your calendar so we can start making steps to actually move abroad this upcoming year. And if you're interested in having a PDF download, then there's actually a guide that is the five exact steps to move abroad. So the link is in this podcast description if you wanna grab it there, or you can go to jordangiberson.com/guide and it'll pop up there. So I think the easiest is just to go in the description and click on the link there if you're interested in having a PDF guide with the five exact steps to move abroad, but without further ado, we'll go ahead and get started with today's episode. So let's have a quick second to have a little heart to heart with each other. Why should next year be the year that you finally do it, that you finally move abroad? If you've been saying for years that you want to move abroad, you are not alone. Most people need to think about it for years before they actually take action. But thinking doesn't change your life. Actually planning and making a decision and taking steps forward does so you don't have to have it all figured out. I mean, none of us ever really do, but you need a plan and you need to actually start taking small steps forward each month to make it happen this upcoming year. So imagine yourself a year from now, you are walking through your new neighborhood in the city that you've always dreamed about moving to abroad. You're picking up your groceries at the local market and hearing a different language around you. You're picking up a croissant or grabbing a coffee at your favorite coffee shop where they know your name and they recognize you, and you go by all the time. That version of you and that life exists and it can exist. You just need to start now. You definitely have time. You have options. You can totally do this. There are so many Americans who have moved abroad before you. There are hundreds of thousands of Americans that are living abroad, and if they can do it, then you can do it, but you need to make a plan before January hits or whenever you're listening to this episode, start going in your calendar and actually. Marking the dates you're going to make certain decisions by and do certain things by so that you're ready to take real action. So if you're listening to this episode now, whenever it goes live, then start marking your calendar for the beginning of January and when you want to accomplish things. But if you listen to it later, then start just taking account of when you want to accomplish things within the next calendar year so that you can move abroad like you've always wanted to. So I have mapped out the month by month roadmap of what you can do to be able to move abroad. And I've mapped it out in about like 10 to 12 months or so. But I do think that you can move abroad in a shorter time span, especially if you don't have as many responsibilities, if it's just you. I think it's a little bit different if you have a family that you're moving with. If you have a home and a mortgage and. Cars and all the things. I think that it just takes a little bit longer. Maybe the more responsibilities you have and the more people in your clan that you have. But if it's just you, then I do think that you can move abroad in a shorter time span, like probably six months. So if you have less responsibilities in your life, then maybe think about shortening this to say like, every time I say two months, then you do one month to accomplish both of those tasks, if that makes sense. So if I say. Like in January, you do this, in February, you do that. Then you can think about doing both of those things in one month so you can shorten your time span to six months. But I've gone ahead and outlined it to 12 months. So even if you do have less responsibilities and you just wanna take it easy, then you could do 12 months so that it's a little bit slower paced and not. Quick, but if you really want to move abroad in six months, you can totally make that happen as well. Even if you do have a lot of responsibilities. If you're intentional about what you do each month, then you definitely can achieve it and be able to move abroad in a shorter time span. But I've done 12 months, so I hope that makes sense. So what is the month by month roadmap? Let's talk about where we're at right now. If you're listening to this episode, whenever it's being published, then we are in November, December-ish time, so you can kind of start laying the groundwork where we're at now. So I would set your intention, decide that you are going to do this. Write down your why you want to move abroad. So many different people have different reasons. Maybe it's political reasons, maybe it's personal reasons, maybe it's just the, for the adventure that was me. Maybe it's for your career. I mean, there could be. So many reasons why. So write down your why, whether it's on your notes app, on your phone, or if you do a journal, like write it down in your journal. I think just decide why you're doing this because it does set your intention and motivates you to kind of go back to your why and remind yourself why you're doing all these things. To be able to move abroad and to picture that life that you can have abroad and how it's different from your current life. So that's what I do. Set your intention. Do that now before the start of the year, before you start to actually take action steps to move abroad. I think set your intention, decide on your why and write that down. The next thing that I would do is to choose your target move date. So are you planning on summer of this upcoming year? Are you planning on the fall? Are you just saying, okay, I want to move by this time next year? So I would start. Figuring out when that's going to be set your target move date, and then we can kind of work back. So we're kind of creating our work back plan, right? To say if we wanna move abroad by that date, then these are all the steps that I need to do before then. So choose your target move date and honestly put it in your calendar if you have your calendar open. Or don't have it open. Put it open and write down the exact date or like a target month and say like, this is the month that I'm working towards, and I think this just helps make it feel more real. I'd also create a move abroad Google Drive folder or some other way that you can organize all of this, all this stuff. I love Google Drive because you can. Take notes or you know, write down certain things in a, you know, in a Google doc and then you can also put together like an Excel sheet for your budgeting and you can put together, like download your PDFs and put them into folders for your Visa. I think it just helps keep you organized so that whenever you are figuring out your visa, you're like, okay, I have. All of my files. I know like this is my visa. This is like the PDF of it. You have everything just in one place. I think that it's helpful. Another thing you'll want to do is to start saving money. So open a separate savings account just for this move. You wanna make sure you have enough money saved aside for the flights and. Buying furniture and all those things. So just start saving money now and open that separate savings account, which I think also helps set the intention to say, okay, I'm actually gonna do this next year. I would also tell a trusted friend or an accountability partner that you plan to move abroad next year or this year. And when that is, like what is the specific date? When are you planning on doing that? Tell someone that you know is going to be supportive of you. Don't tell someone that you know is not gonna be supportive. Who is gonna call you crazy or try to talk you out of it? Tell someone that you know is going to be supportive of you. And then we can tell the other people in our lives that we know might not be as supportive when we're a little bit further down the line and we're. Really secure in our decision. We know this is what we want to do because you don't wanna tell someone that you know is going to be trying to talk you out of it right now. You need someone that's really supportive. So that's what I would do this year. We're laying the groundwork, we're setting ourselves up for success in the upcoming year, in the months ahead. So these are the things that we're doing in November, December, if you're listening to this episode live or whenever it's coming out. And then if you're listening to this episode at a later time, then just start setting these intentions now. So you are deciding why you're moving abroad and you're writing it down. You're choosing your targets Move date. What is that date? Write it down in your calendar. You are creating a move abroad Google Drive folder. Or some other way to organize all of the things that have to do with moving abroad to your destinations. That's all organized in one place. We're gonna start saving money and open a separate savings account just for this move. Maybe go ahead and start an Excel document or a Google Sheets document to start thinking about, your expenses and figuring out how much you need for what, and then tell a trusted friend or accountability partner that you're going to do this and what the date is. And now that we've laid our groundwork, we're gonna hit the ground running in the new year. So in January, we're accomplishing our goal of moving abroad this year. So what are we doing next? I would say the next step is to research your ideal location, which country? And city fits your goals best, fits your lifestyle, fits your budget, make sure you are accomplishing your dream or your why you're moving abroad that we talked about, which is what you're doing now in November, December. So we're researching the country and city. You might say, Jordan, I already know the country I'm moving to. I already know the city. If that's you, awesome. Skip to the next step. But I do think that it's good sometimes to make sure you have all your ducks in a row just to make sure you're aware of the cost of living. Make sure you're aware of the culture, the language. Can you build community there? Just make sure that you are going to be happy there and just make sure that you, you have all that aligned. I would say you want to make sure that you're doing your research to make sure you're choosing the best location for you. So you can use tools like Numbeo to figure out cost of living. You can look into Reddit. Expat forums. You can look at Facebook groups, you can look at YouTube vlogs. You can go on Pinterest and look at like different travel things and why it makes that location so fun. So I think that research is good, but do not go down the research rabbit hole. Oh, it is so easy to do this, so easy to get caught up to go down a rabbit hole about some specific thing that happened in that city years ago and how it's changed the culture of today and blah, blah, blah. My goodness. You could really go down a rabbit hole here, so do not. Spend too much time researching, give yourself a deadline and say, by the end of January, I am going to narrow down and make a decision on my country and city. And if you really still can't decide on the country and city that you want to move to, I do highly recommend doing a trip abroad, a scouting trip to figure out. Which country you want to move to if you still don't know which country, but hopefully you kind of know which country. And then maybe we can just figure out which cities within that country you want to move to. So I did an episode on this recently and we're gonna dive into that a little bit more in, a little bit later in the episode. But I would recommend if you don't know where you want to move abroad to, if you are still trying to decide on which country you should move to or which city within the country you should move to, then you should go back and listen to episode 104 if you want more information. So it's called before you Move Abroad. Take this one trip first. So again, it's 104 before you move abroad. Take this one trip first. It's just a few episodes back. I would highly recommend listening to that one because we go into a lot of detail on how to plan that scouting trip and why a scouting trip is really important, even if you kind of know where you already want to move abroad to if you haven't gone to that place in a while. So let's say that you went to Madrid, Spain seven years ago, and you lived there for three months and you know that you loved it so much. I mean, I do think that you might be able to just go there and not do a scouting trip, and it'd be fine, but I think that it might be worth doing a scouting trip because I think sometimes we have this. Sometimes we have rose colored glasses where we think, oh, that was so amazing. Like I did this and that, and it was so incredible. But sometimes it's really different to visit a certain place as a tourist and the actual lifestyle if you live there would be really different. So I do think that it's really helpful to have a trip to see, okay, which neighborhood would I really want to live in? Okay, what would my actual lifestyle here look like? What would it feel like? Where would my grocery shops be? What would my commute to work be? What would my coworking spaces be like if I'm, working independently? So I think that there's. A lot to look into whenever it comes to making sure that you're choosing the best country and city abroad for you. And I do think that a scouting trip helps you so much, way more than just doing research, because you can read about something all you want, but we know that whenever we actually experience something, it helps us to really know what it's all about. So in January we are researching our ideal location and maybe planning a trip to visit our country and city abroad to make sure that we're choosing the best destination for us. And again, if you want more details going to episode 104, but the purpose of this month is to have our top choice location selected by the end of January. And if we don't know exactly where we want to move to and we. We're still kind of trying to decide. Then let's start planning that trip abroad maybe for a couple months down. But maybe start planning that in January so that we can do that trip in March. Okay, now we're going on to February. So in February, let's start researching visas and our eligibility to get those visas. So if you know the country that you want to move to, or let's say that you're trying to consider two, then look into the visa options for that country. Or the other country, like for both countries that you're thinking about moving to before we do that scouting trip in March, like I talked about. So let's start researching those visa options for your chosen country. What does the digital nomad visa look like? What does the work visa look like? Student visa, family visa, self-employment. etc. There is pretty much going to be a visa for most instances that you want to move abroad. Like most countries will have really similar visa categories, so not every country has a digital nomad visa, But even if they don't have a specific digital nomad visa, they'll probably have a self-employed visa. They'll normally have a work visa. They'll normally have a retirement visa, but it really does depend on the country. So just look into the visa options for the country that you want to move to. And if you know you want to. Be a digital nomad, then start looking into the eligibility requirements. So if you know that you want to work abroad and have a nine to five job be employed, then look at the requirements for, for that as well. You just want to understand the visa, make sure that you will qualify for it and start gathering any documentation that you know that you're going to need. Like it will give you a list for every visa of what you need. If you need your degree, if you're going to need bank statements, uh, proof of income, like it will list out exactly what you need. So it's just start. Gathering all that information, and if you open that Google Drive folder, like, you know, we talked about doing that in November, December, then start gathering that documentation and organizing it in folders in your Google Drive. Another thing you might consider doing in February is to join Facebook groups or Reddit threads or like, Americans in Spain, expat group on Facebook, just for real world insights. I, again, would not get too caught up in doing a research rabbit hole. But I think that if you haven't done that, I think February might be good just for researching visas and eligibility, reaching out to people to ask them questions in those online forums about visas and what they have and the process and things like that. So just identify your best visa option in February. That's our goal, and know exactly what's required to qualify. So that is our goal for February, is researching visas, knowing the eligibility, and making sure that we're. Identifying the best visa options. We know what we need to do to qualify for that visa. Okay. And now March is rolling around and we're starting to do our scouting trip. To visit and visualize. So this is kind of an optional thing, but I do recommend it if you have the ability to do so. Plan a short scouting trip to your top destination. In this trip, you'll explore different neighborhoods, get a feel for daily life, visit the local cafes, the grocery stores, the gyms, see what life would actually feel like there, and start picturing your future home and your routine. So with this month, the goal is to do that scouting trip. If you decide to do that and you decide that it's important to you and, and something good to do. So the goal of that month is to leave that scouting trip with clarity and motivation to move there. So I think that whenever we haven't gone to that city abroad in a while, then sometimes we kind of lose a motivation or the insight into why you want to be there. And I think that going back, even if you kind of know that you want to be there, it gives you that motivation and that. Excitement again that you know, like, oh, I remember how amazing this is. Like I'm here again and it feels so good and this is what I really want. And you kind of know what you're working towards. You're like reminding yourself of that. So I think that doing that scouting trip, sometimes it's to have a bit of clarity on what the perfect destination is for you. But I think sometimes it's just to re-motivate ourselves as well and know what we're working towards and to have some clarity on. Which neighborhood are we're moving to and start doing research on the gyms like this is just to help you get excited and to have clarity to move forward and actually, take the steps to move abroad. So I would start planning this March trip in January, but plan for March to go visit so that we can start taking more steps to move, in the coming months. Okay, the next month is going to be April. So in April let's focus on financial planning and budgeting. We'll want to create a move abroad budget. We'll have to think about things like moving costs, like flights, shipping, anything like maybe you wanna ship boxes ahead of time or furniture maybe. Thinking about any deposits for an apartment. We'll want to think about our Visa application fees and a saving cushion. So ideally three to six months of living expenses, just to make sure we have our bases covered and we're covering ourselves if there are any emergencies. So we're gonna create that move abroad budget and think about all the things that we might need, all of our living expenses, how much money are we spending now? What is the cost of living abroad? And again, you can use a tool like Numbeo to say, how much does it cost to live in Madrid, Spain? Like, what are the expenses? So I would figure out like, what are you spending now? Like where is your money going now and what percentage of your money is going where? And then figure out, okay, what are my things that I'll be paying for on a regular basis there? Like, what is the cost of living and how much money do I wanna spend in each category? Like for your transportation and your fund money and your rent and all those things. And then figure out your one-off cost. So your flight shipping, any deposits you need. Things like that, your Visa application fees, so those things that you need for, moving abroad that are like the one-off costs. So create a budget for those things and we can, again, use our Google Drive folder and use Google Sheets, we're saying super organized, and then figure out how you'll make money abroad. So as the next thing you'll wanna do in April. Figure out how you're gonna make money. Are you going to have a remote job? Are you gonna have a new job? Are you gonna do freelance work? Are you going to, find 9-5 job there and also do freelance work on the on the side. So we kind of had to figure out how we're going to make money whenever we figured out about our visa, because if you know which visa you need, like if you're gonna be a student or you're going to do freelance work, then we kind of know how we're gonna make money. But just kinda make sure that you're starting to think about that because the next month we're gonna be starting to apply for jobs. So we wanna make sure we have absolute clarity in April about how we're going to be making money, how much money is possible, and then kind of work that into your financial planning. So if you know. Okay, I'm gonna have a 9-5 job, but to have the lifestyle that I want, I'm also gonna do a little bit of freelance work on the side. So this is where we're kind of thinking about more financial planning. And the next month we're gonna be talking about our job or income set up. So figuring out how we're making money, and we're also going to maybe set up an automatic transfer to our move abroad savings account each month because we know that we want maybe three months of expenses, maybe. 6 months of living expenses. I'd say if you have less responsibilities in your life, then probably 3 months is fine. If you know you have a lot of responsibilities in your life, a family, you know, you have multiple cars or whatever, then maybe you'll want to do 6 months of living expenses just to kind of give yourself more cushion. But I would set up an automatic transfer to that move abroad savings account each month so that we're ready for our move in November or December or whatever month you decide. So the goal of April is to have a clear financial plan and a savings target, and then may rolls around, and this is whenever we're looking for a job or figuring out our income setup. So start applying for remote jobs. If you plan to work online, update your resume for international applications. If you plan to be employed abroad, network with people who have already worked abroad and. Ask them about the job market and try to just kind of figure out what your next steps are going to be. If you need to find a job in the country, then start figuring out companies that will sponsor visas. Like is it bigger companies? Is it smaller companies? Which industry, like do we need to make a little bit of a shift in our career? Like start looking into what the job market looks like. What you're actually going to do. So maybe start taking some steps to build and secure income streams that support your move. So that's what we're focused on in May, is figuring out where we're making the money, like specifically which job or what freelance work are we going to have? So start really pushing in May, and that's probably going to be something that we'll continually work towards in the coming months as well. Maybe you find a job really quickly in May. Or maybe it takes you a couple months to find a job or to figure out, you know, the clients that you want to build up for freelance work. But I would start working on that in May. And then in June, you're going to start thinking about housing and logistics research. So you'll want to do a bit of research into the rental markets. What does that look like? What neighborhoods am I going to and how can I secure housing? You want to look at the Visa requirements for housing, if that's the case, if you need that to get housing and the typical cost. So make sure that we are. Working that out. Hopefully you have your financial plan that you've put together a couple months prior. And then we're also just gonna be learning how renting works in your target country. So what do the deposits look like? Do I need a guarantor? What are the documents that I need? So just start figuring out what you need in order to rent and then create a list of trusted rental sites or agents. The goal of June is to understand what your future housing situation is going to look like and what you'll need to secure it. But what I would recommend is that you find temporary housing before you move abroad. So maybe in June you also start thinking about, which Airbnb am I going to get, or like. Like, how am I going to do that? Am I going to try to do a sublease? Am I going to do Airbnb? I would just definitely recommend seeing a place in person before you. Move in. You do not want to find a place online, even if they do a virtual tour for you and then move there. You just wanna make sure it's in a, on a quiet street, that you feel comfortable there. There's so many things you just don't know before you actually are there to actually see it. It might have a weird smell, like it might be a really loud building. It might seem like it's on a quiet street, but then you get there and it's actually on a really loud street. Or the neighborhood's really sketchy, like you just don't know until you're there. So I would highly recommend doing short-term housing and planning that. Before you move. But here, I think it's just good to start kind of figuring out the rental market and what that looks like. In June time, probably. And then we're coming up to July. So in July we're gonna think about our paperwork prep, start gathering all the necessary paperwork. Like your passport. You'll need to make sure that you renew it if it's expiring within 12 months. Pull together your birth certificates, your copies of degrees, your background, check if you need that. Bank statements. Any translations or apostles if requires. So sometimes you have to translate your documents. Schedule any appointments that you need before you move. So any doctor's appointments, you wanna schedule vaccinations, notary, like anything that you wanna get done before you move abroad. So just start thinking about the paperwork prep and the things that you know that you're going to need, especially if you look at the Visa requirements and what you need for that. So just make sure you are paperwork ready by the end of the summer. So that is our goal, is to just have all of our ducks in a row and know what we need because then August, it's going to be our Visa application, so we're hopefully going to have our job secured. We've been looking for jobs for. It would be like 3-4 months by now, and we're going to start thinking about our Visa application. So now that we know what our work is, we've found a job, or we've secured our income in the past three months, now we're going to start doing our Visa application. So apply for your Visa in August, or at least. Book your Visa appointments. You'll want to double check your documentation and make sure that it's all saved in your Google Drive. Prepare for potential interviews or additional requirements that might come up. So this is our goal in August. It's to just get Visa submitted or in progress so that we can be ready for our move. So once all that paperwork's done, it's kind of the boring part, but it's something that we need. It's our hall pass is what I call it, to be able to move abroad and stay there legally. So that is what we need to do in August. And then in September, we're starting to do these final logistics in our last couple months. So September we're starting to declutter. We're we are preparing for the move. You don't wanna do this too early because I think it's a little bit overwhelming, but. Start downsizing your belonging. Start getting rid of all the random things that we build up in our lives that we have that we don't really need. So start selling, start donating, or start storing what you won't bring. Get any moving quotes if needed. So if you want to ship your things ahead of time, then start getting some quotes and figure out the company that you want to use to move yourself abroad. Make a moving checklist for the final months. So. Decide if you want to, sell your car or where you will store your car in the us. Figure out, you know, do you want to ship your furniture or do you want to keep it? Like, do you want to store it somewhere and then buy new furniture abroad? Which I probably recommend doing that actually. So I think it's just getting physically and mentally prepared for your move in September to start kind of decluttering your life and figuring out what you're going to leave and what you're going to bring with you and start preparing for the move. And then in October we're doing our final logistics. We're booking our flight, which I would recommend doing once you've received your Visa. So hopefully by now, it's been a couple months since we've applied for our Visa in October. So book your flight, finalize any temporary accommodation for whenever you arrive. So you might wanna book that Airbnb or maybe you do a sublease for your accommodation, but I would probably align that with your flight so you can have your short term accommodation for whenever you arrive. So probably wanna make sure you get your visa answer and then book your flights and your accommodation kind of around the same time. So that's what we're doing in October. We're also going to be setting up any mail forwarding canceling any subscriptions for the US that we know We don't need letting our banks know that we're going abroad. Saying any goodbyes. Maybe you throw a party for your family and your friends and start just wrapping up life in your home country. Any last minute details that you need to do, like maybe you go ahead and sell your car, or just figure out those last minute details that you need so we're getting everything ready for our departure. That is our goal in October. And then in November and December we're going, we are celebrating our journey of moving abroad, that we're finally doing it, we're having our farewell party or our dinner. We're flying out and we're excited about starting our new chapter abroad. This is when we begin our new life abroad by the end of 2026 or 12 months ahead of whenever you're listening to this episode, maybe even six months. It's totally doable to do it in six months. It just, you know, you have to do things a little bit. More compact, but it's definitely possible. But this is, this is the journey. This is what we're doing this upcoming year in order to move abroad. So we are celebrating in November, December, and we are moving abroad. We've made it happen. So really, you don't need to do everything at once. You just have to take it step by step every month. So I hope that this plan was helpful, and I do think, again, if you wanna move abroad in 6 months, you can totally make it happen. Just kind of like combine two months. So if I said like February do this and March, do that, then kind of you could would combine and say like, in one month I'm gonna do the things that she said to do in February and March. So just to recap what we've talked about in like right now, November, December, we are laying the groundwork. We are deciding. We're actually doing this. What is our why? We're setting our target move date. We're creating a Google Drive folder to stay organized. We're starting to save money and we're telling an accountability partner that we're doing it next year so in January, we're trying to find that country and city that fits our goals best. In February, we're researching our visas and making sure that we're eligible for them. So we're identifying our best visa option and knowing exactly what's required to qualify in March, we are. Hopefully visiting and visualizing, so this is optional, but if you wanna do that scouting trip, the hope is that if we do a scouting trip, we're leaving with clarity and motivation to actually move there. In April, we're doing our financial planning and our budgeting. The hope is that we have a. Clear financial plan and savings target by the end of April in May, we're starting to figure out our job or our income setup. So we're hoping to secure any income streams, like we're beginning that process that, would support our move. So we're hoping to do that in May. So we're starting for a job in May. We're securing any work. Freelance work, whatever it is in May. So that's what we're doing. Then in June, we're doing our housing and logistics research. We're understanding our future housing situation and what we'll need to secure it. In July. We're doing our paperwork prep, we're being paperwork ready. By the end of summer, having everything that we need in order to apply for our visa so that in August we can submit our Visa application. So we're getting our visa submitted or in progress in. August and then in September we're starting to declutter our lives. We're starting to plan for the move or being physically and mentally prepared for the move in September. So then in October we can do the final logistics. We can book our flight and do everything that we need in order to get us ready for our departure so that in November and December we can celebrate and we can go and we can finally begin our new life abroad by the end of 2026. And if you stick to this plan, by this time next year, you won't be thinking about moving abroad. You'll be living it. You're going to be there starting your life that you've been dreaming about for so long. So my call to action for you is to go plug these milestones into your calendar right now. Right now. Whenever you finish this episode, go. Plant these milestones into your calendar and start planning out when you're doing what so that you can actually accomplish your dream of moving abroad in 2026. There are so many Americans who have moved abroad before you, who have moved to Europe, have made it happen. And they're not special. I'm not special. If they can do it, you can absolutely do it. So I hope that you will start taking action now so that you can be thankful that you did next year, this time. so I hope this was helpful.
