Let's do it. Hey, y'all. Welcome back to the Collide Kids Podcast. I'm your host, Christen Clark. The Kolide Kids Podcast is a show for kids and families where we learn together how life and faith collide. It is so great to have you listening today. Thank you so much for being here and spending this time with me. Hey, we have a brand new segment that I'm really excited about called let's Talk About It.
Christen Clark [00:00:51]:
It's a really fun segment where I'm going to ask you three questions. They might be silly or imaginative or heartfelt or faith filled to spark some great family conversations because that's why we're here, right? We're spending time together as a family. This is a great way for you to talk with your family about what you heard on today's show. So stick around to the end of the interview for that. Now, if you've been listening for a while, this means we're going to move the kids Only segment to our YouTube channel. So if you still want to be on the show to share a Bible verse or a joke or a song, you will be featured on our YouTube video version of one of the upcoming episodes. So send those in. I can't wait to put you on YouTube.
Christen Clark [00:01:34]:
Well, speaking of YouTube, I'm really excited about my next guest. He is someone that I discovered through YouTube because he is a children's pastor who has a YouTube channel and it has been so fun getting to know him. His name is Josh Combs. He's been involved in Children's Ministry since 2006 and he serves as a full time children's pastor and part time as a traveling kids evangelist, speaking at churches, camps, vbs and lots of other kid friendly events. When he's on stage, he's known as Jumpin Josh. I love that. Josh has been married to his wife Kirsten for 12 years with one son who's 2 years old. His name is Henry and they also have a dog named Cookie.
Christen Clark [00:02:14]:
Josh is into drums, playing chess, retro video games. He says he's amazing at Mario Kart and he's very humble about it and he collects books but he's still working on the reading part. You guys, I had so much fun talking with Josh. I know you're going to enjoy this conversation and be so encouraged. Here is my conversation with Josh Combs. Josh Combs. I am so excited to have you on the Kolide Kids podcast.
Josh Combs [00:02:48]:
Awesome. Thank you for having me, Christen. So excited to be here. This is super cool.
Christen Clark [00:02:53]:
Yes, thank you. This is so fun to have you. Would you just introduce yourself to our listeners today and tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do?
Josh Combs [00:03:01]:
Yeah, absolutely. So my name is Josh, and I live in Manchester, Connecticut, and originally from Maryland and then got to move up here about 10 years ago. My wife and I, we moved up here to be kids pastors. And so just to give a little background on myself, I started doing kids ministry when I was about 18 or 19 years old. My pastor's wife at the time came to me and said, hey, Josh, we'd like you to start a kids church. And I said, that's awesome. Let me just figure out what a kid searches and then I'll get back to you. Yeah.
Josh Combs [00:03:30]:
So I started off doing that, and thank goodness there's no videos of those first times because I was trying to figure it out. And I'm not a really good person at, like, impersonations. The only thing I can kind of do is, like, this weird Southern fake accent that no one could ever hear, but that's all I had. So I was out Bag Jack the Cowboy, and I would get up there with my cowboy hat and I have my boots, and I'd just be like, you know what? I'm. I'm as nervous as a cat on a rocking chair, but I'm excited to be here today. We're gonna have a good time talking about the Lord. So anyway, I'll stop that, but you.
Christen Clark [00:04:04]:
Sound like my family, so.
Josh Combs [00:04:05]:
Okay. Okay. Yes, yes. Maybe that's what it is. You're just. My environment is coming out of Maryland.
Christen Clark [00:04:12]:
That's right.
Josh Combs [00:04:13]:
Anyway, I started off doing kids church, and then thank goodness, I kind of dropped the whole persons. I give. I give so much props to people who can do the impersonations and the characters, but for me, I kind of found that, you know, I wanted to speak as. As me. As Josh. Yeah. And so I started kind of this. This nickname of Jumping Josh.
Josh Combs [00:04:32]:
I know right now I'm Sitting Josh. Not as. Not as cool. It's boring. But a lot of my stuff includes, like, action songs, you know, jumping up and down, movement, all that good stuff. And so I wanted to be Jumping Josh. So when I travel, you know, I'm Jumping Josh. That's my kids evangelist thing here at Kids Kids Church.
Josh Combs [00:04:52]:
At the church I'm at, they call me Pastor Josh, which feels very formal. Especially when I'm in like a Super Mario shirt. It just doesn't match. I'm sitting there in my chucks and my jeans. Pastor Josh, like, okay, yeah, so anyway, yeah, so. So 10 years ago, came here, get to be a kids pastor, work with kids and families. But I also still do travel. So I get to kind of have, you know, best of it with the worlds of being able to travel.
Josh Combs [00:05:16]:
I do camps, VBS's training and. And then I know we will talk about a little bit. I have a YouTube channel where I have some fun stuff on there. I get to be jumping Josh on there a little bit, do some object lessons and yeah, I have a wife, Kirsten. We've been married for 12 years. I have a son, Henry, who is 2 years old and. And then a dog who I. We like to call her former first child.
Josh Combs [00:05:39]:
But you know, now she, now she's a big sister, Cookie. And so she's. Yes, she's still struggling with the fact that it's not about her, you know, all about her. It's still part of the family. But she, she was kind of our first kid, you know. So Cookie, she's 11 years old. She's a miniature poodle and Jack Russell terrier. So all that, all that personality wrapped up in a little fur ball.
Christen Clark [00:06:02]:
So my. We had a dog before we had kids. His name was Levi. And I feel like when I was pregnant, he would just stare at me like, you're getting big. You know, like, I think he was like worried about me. And then when the kids came, he just was like, they're really loud. Like he would just come whenever they'd cry. He would rush into the room to report like, the baby is crying.
Christen Clark [00:06:23]:
Like, can you come take, take care of this child?
Josh Combs [00:06:26]:
Absolutely. Yeah. Cookie definitely has like that continual annoyance of like got like, what's going on here? When are you. When is this other, whatever this is, person, dog? Because I don't think, especially when they're small, like they're confused by it. Like they know it's a human. Like we tried the whole thing. My wife's very good about thinking about little details where we actually had someone bring like a blanket from the baby to smell it. Right? That whole thing.
Christen Clark [00:06:49]:
Yeah, yeah, there you go.
Josh Combs [00:06:50]:
Didn't do anything.
Christen Clark [00:06:52]:
Yeah. Our dogs would be like, it's still here. Like you. Are you guys gonna get rid of this at some point? Because it's still here.
Josh Combs [00:06:59]:
Henry feeds Cookie. So I think that's warmed up. He'll do like the sticky we give him like A strawberry or something. We'll take a bite, give a bite to cookie tries to go back. Hopefully we can stop it, like, in slow motion. We're like, oh, you know. But yes. Yeah.
Josh Combs [00:07:14]:
So that's. That's kind of been cute to see, but definitely it's not a mutual relationship right now.
Christen Clark [00:07:18]:
Yeah. I wanted to ask you a little bit more about your job, but before we do that, because this is a show for kids, I always ask my guests to tell me a joke or two. So do you have a good joke for us today?
Josh Combs [00:07:31]:
Yes, yes, I do. Why did the bicycle fall over?
Christen Clark [00:07:35]:
Oh, I don't know.
Josh Combs [00:07:36]:
Because it was too tired.
Christen Clark [00:07:39]:
It was too tired. That's good. That's good. I like that one.
Josh Combs [00:07:44]:
I got another one for you. Why do cows have hooves instead of feet?
Christen Clark [00:07:49]:
Why do they have hooves instead of feet? I don't know.
Josh Combs [00:07:51]:
Because they lactose. Lactose. That was a little more, but I like that one.
Christen Clark [00:07:57]:
That's a good one. They lactose.
Josh Combs [00:07:59]:
Okay, one more, One more, One more. Okay, one more. Why did the scarecrow win an award?
Christen Clark [00:08:06]:
I don't know.
Josh Combs [00:08:07]:
Because he was outstanding in his field.
Christen Clark [00:08:14]:
I like those. Those are good ones. Yeah, I can tell you like the joke part. That's why you're in kids ministry, right?
Josh Combs [00:08:20]:
Yes. Yes, it is. Yes, it is. You know, I always joke with people that, you know, you have all these people that have different giftings and things, and, and even in kids ministry, you have people that do the puppets and you have people that do the optical illusions. Mind gifting is sarcasm. That's what I operate in. And jokes and humor. Yeah.
Josh Combs [00:08:39]:
So I always like to. I always like to incorporate that. You know, like if I take a Bible story, for example, I like to, you know, my. My kind of wheelhouse is. Is doing an interactive Bible story. So getting kids or adults to come up, act it out, and then use humor, you know, in and off. So, yeah, that's. That's kind of my.
Josh Combs [00:08:57]:
My language.
Christen Clark [00:08:58]:
And, you know, I think it's really interesting about kids that they always have a tell. Like if you asked a kid, they don't have to look it up. They're like, yeah, I got three or four that I could tell you right now. Whereas when you're an adult, you don't have that go to joke that you always keep in your back pocket. So I like including that in my show because it really forces adults to think about those things.
Josh Combs [00:09:19]:
Yeah, yeah. There's a kid. I. I work at this camp in Connecticut every year, and there's this Kid when he came. So I think camp starts at 8 years old and, and maybe. I'm sure some kids know about this series, but there's a series out there. Where? There. It's like a joke book for your age.
Josh Combs [00:09:34]:
So the first time this kid came, he had this joke book that he would carry around. Jokes for eight year olds. Of course, next year, joke for nine year olds, you know.
Christen Clark [00:09:41]:
Yeah.
Josh Combs [00:09:42]:
And I'm on Amazon. Like, there's gotta be a joke for a 37 year old. No, they stop at 12, you know.
Christen Clark [00:09:47]:
They'Re like, stop at 12, come on.
Josh Combs [00:09:49]:
I know, I know.
Christen Clark [00:09:50]:
Like, wow, like, that's all you get.
Josh Combs [00:09:52]:
I could get a joke book. But anyway.
Christen Clark [00:09:55]:
Well, tell us a little bit about how you got started working with kids and kids ministry. Because I used to be a kids ministry director and I was a worship leader and I did all kinds of stuff and I really felt like it was just a part of me like from the very beginning. And so it was natural to jump into it. But you said your pastor's wife just asked you, hey, will you help with this? So how, how did that whole thing start?
Josh Combs [00:10:16]:
Yeah, so I was always the kind of kid to just kind of help out with whatever, especially my teenage years, you know, like right now I play the drums and the bass. That's like my two instruments I play. And literally, like, I play the drums because our drummer moved to Florida and then I played the bass because the bass player had to like become the piano player. So, you know, and to this day, you know, I'm not. I'm not a professional, but I'm proficient. I teach lessons to other kids, you know, drums and bass, I'll play at the church when they need me. And so to this day, you know, I've. There's a lot of things that I've acquired just because I was willing to just jump in and do it.
Christen Clark [00:10:53]:
Yeah.
Josh Combs [00:10:53]:
And so I always tell kids, teenagers, you know, hey, if you're looking to be involved in the kingdom of God or in the church, it's not about saying, okay, this is like, I envision that I want to do that one day, but just be available to help, be available to serve where is needed. So that's what happened. Our pastor's wife came and said, hey, we want to do a kids church every Sunday and we'd love for you to start it. I had no idea. I grew up in church, so I kind of seen kids ministry, kids evangelism, but I wasn't. Wasn't something. I wasn't around a Lot. I kind of YouTubed.
Josh Combs [00:11:26]:
YouTube was around back then in 2006, and it was surprising. It wasn't like what it is now. I feel like, you know, you had the, you had the kind of like, you know, like YouTube.com and then you had to, you know, wait for like a pigeon to fly and then they would give you a code and you put the code in. You know, it was different, but there was some stuff out there that, you know, like there were some action songs and I didn't really know what to do, but I just kind of jumped in and yeah, something cool happened. I really developed a passion for it and a love for it. And seeing kids pray in the presence of God, teaching the word of God, you know, making those Bible stories come to life. And yeah, it just something that I stuck with. I did it every week and those times were, it was a tough time where, you know, our church, we were a small church, but we were in a building program.
Josh Combs [00:12:16]:
So we would do the classic. Like we didn't have a building of our own. We run it out like a, like a community center. So 6, 6am, 6:30am every Sunday. You know, we're. And I was the drummer, mind you. Right. Remember how I jumped in as the drummer and so we would have kids church at 10 and then we'd have like regular church at 11.
Josh Combs [00:12:35]:
Well, I had to be a part of that setup at 6:30am so I'm bringing in of like all these things, all these props. Thanks to my mom. She like funded my, my Party City habit of going to Party city and Dollar Tree. She got me all these hats and all these, all these things all, you know, and that was a big part of, of of what I did. It was, it was tough. It was a lot of building that from the ground up. But you know, God, you know, really developed like a passion and a burden of, you know, just teaching kids every single week.
Christen Clark [00:13:06]:
Yeah.
Josh Combs [00:13:06]:
And then from there doors started to open where I would travel. And the first church I got to pre chat, like outside of my own church was in Georgia. And I know you said you're in Georgia and so that was a crazy experience because it was like things that I was doing on a weekly basis I was now doing in front of other people. Like they didn't know me, they didn't know my jokes, they didn't know my personality. And that was nerve wracking. I remember I was somewhere in the church at this visiting church, and I remember looking out the window was like 30 minutes before church started. And I was kind of, I forget where I was in an office and I just remember there are people coming in the parking lot and I just remember thinking like, I hope they don't regret coming today. You know, after, after they hear this guy.
Josh Combs [00:13:51]:
You know, I wore like bright colored shoes and, and you know, shirts. But it was a really neat experience because, you know, I got to just step into that of preaching at another church. Other kids, you know, God moved, you know, poured out his spirit and it was just, it was an awesome service. And so from then on, it was kind of like another door would open here and there. I got to go to another church and, and travel. And in 2011, I became a full time kids evangelist. So that's what I did full time. And then Fast forward to 2014.
Josh Combs [00:14:22]:
I basically went to this church in Connecticut. And I didn't know it, but I was kind of trying out for the church, you know, like, like they were looking for a kids pastor, they were looking for a kids leader. I didn't know, I thought I was just going, my wife and I were going to, you know, just, just a minister at this church. But we, we just love the church in general. We just, you know, I remember my wife and I not knowing anything going on behind the scenes after, when we, on our way home, we looked at each other and we said, wouldn't it be cool just to go here? You know, wouldn't it be cool just to be a part of this church? And sure enough, the pastor reached out to me a couple months later, we started that conversation and we, we moved here in 2014. So we've been here since. And so I have the privilege every week I work with families and kids. Our kids ministry is called Kids Rock.
Josh Combs [00:15:09]:
So we, we have a great kids ministry, great team, great team here of volunteers and people that just love kids. And I still get to travel a little bit, I'll still get to do some other things, you know, in other states, but really my passion and heart is here.
Christen Clark [00:15:23]:
I love how God does that, how he puts things together for us. And you know, and I, I think it goes back too to like sometimes what's the verse that says when we don't know what to pray for, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us and prays for us. And so I think there's times where like God, I don't know what I need, but you know what I need. And so he, you know, we can just connect with God and trust him, that he's going to take care of us even if we don't know what to pray for. For ourselves?
Josh Combs [00:15:47]:
Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. When we think about all the different people in the Bible, you know, Moses, he had a stuttering problem. You know, he didn't think he was qualified, but God used him to do amazing things. So, yeah, I always try to live by that of just. Just start out where there's a need. God, where am I available? And it's amazing how God can take that and do his thing.
Christen Clark [00:16:06]:
Yeah, absolutely. Because I think sometimes we kind of put labels on ourselves. Like, this is what I'm good at. This is what I'm bad at. When really, like, especially when you're a kid, it's such a great time to try out new things, to. To dive into different things. What do you think about that? About how the world tries to label us a lot? How do we kind of get out from under that?
Josh Combs [00:16:25]:
I think, especially as kids, right. It can be easy to take labels to heart or, you know, I'm sure kids that are listening, right? You've been called a name before at school or maybe people have said, oh, you're. You're not, you know, you're not that tall. You're short. Or, oh, you're too tall. Or you're. You maybe you have a weird laugh. They say, right? And that.
Josh Combs [00:16:44]:
And that's going to happen. People are going to say things. And I'm sure all of us, we have been guilty at one time or another of maybe making fun of someone or labeling someone, right? But what I want all the kids to listen to and understand today that are hearing this is that God looks at you differently than anyone else, right? There's a. There's a. A boy in the Bible by the name of David. And David. We probably know the story about David and Goliath. He did some incredible things of.
Josh Combs [00:17:08]:
He fought lions and he fought this huge giant, right? But before he was King David, the Bible says that God had sent a prophet to his family. And David had all these brothers, right, that were bigger than him, cooler than him, more qualified than him. And at the time, David was a shepherd. He was out in the field watching sheep. And this prophet comes in to his family, to his dad, Jesse, and says, hey, God has called me to come here because one of your sons is going to be king one day, and I'm going to anoint them. And so Jesse's all excited, right? He's got all of his sons gathered together. They're ready now. David's out in the field.
Josh Combs [00:17:43]:
David, go out in the field. We'll get you in a second. You know, when we have food, when we have pizza, you can come in and eat, but right now you just stay on the field. David wasn't even invited. So Samuel goes through each son, right, One by one. And whenever I teach the story, I like to do this, this good old, like, you know, thumbs up, thumbs down, right? That by son number one, you know, is he going to be king? No, right? Each one, God told Samuel, it's not him, it's not this one, it's not that one. And so after all the sons, you know, basically all of them were, were, were told, nope, it's not you. Samuel was like, is there any, anyone else? Like, is there another kid hiding somewhere? Is there, is there anyone else? And, and Jesse was like, oh, yeah, that's right.
Josh Combs [00:18:26]:
I have this, this son out there, David. Yeah, I guess we'll bring him in. And something amazing happened. When David walked through the door, Samuel saw him, God spoke to him immediately and said, that's the one, right? And so you look at the difference there, that God looked at him and said, that's the one that's going to be king. Samuel anointing him that he was going to be king one day. But the difference there was amazing because everyone else around David said, oh, that's just the shepherd boy. That's just the kid. That's just David.
Josh Combs [00:18:54]:
But God looked at him and said, nope, I have a plan for him. I have a purpose for him. And so each and every one of you that are listening here today, God looks at you the same way. That you're not just a kid. You're not a mess up, right? We can let mistakes in our lives or things that have happened in our lives or our family that, that label us, but we're not those things. We are children of God. The Bible says that when we receive him, we are children of God, right? And so when you take that effort of saying God, I'm going to follow you. I'm going to follow whatever it is you have for me.
Josh Combs [00:19:24]:
I'm going to step into that, that I know you, you're calling me to something greater than anything else, what anyone else tries to label me as, right? That we are not just kids, we are children of God. And so, you know, that's one message I always try to, to. I've taught it to our kids and, and other kids traveling that, you know, we are not just kids, right? We are not just what we're labeled as, but we are children of God.
Christen Clark [00:19:48]:
Yeah, I love that. And I think that's so true to hold on to. That's a truth we need to set in our heart. And just remember that. I heard. I heard another mom say, you know, when you're going through a time or when you're getting bullied or when someone's telling you something about yourself, you know, like pointing out things about you, to just say, what's the point? Like, what's the point of that? Why do you have to call that out? And so I taught my kids that. If somebody says that to, you know, bullies you or calls you a name or whatever, just say, what's the point? And we can say that because what's the point? What does it matter? I'm a child of God, and that's all that matters. And so just knowing that.
Christen Clark [00:20:23]:
That we're his, we're beloved, we're cared for, God created us very uniquely and special for great things. And so we just have to trust in him and not worry about what other people try to say about us.
Josh Combs [00:20:35]:
Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. There's a quote that I kind of live by that what people think of me negatively, that's none of my business, right? Like, if people look at me and say, well, you know, they look at a negative trait, well, he laughs kind of weird or. Or, you know, he. He's. His personality is different. That's okay if they want to think that. But I know God made me on purpose, right? He made everything about me for a reason and purpose.
Josh Combs [00:20:57]:
And I think it's good for kids to have kind of like that. That godly confidence of, yes, I might be different. Yes, all of us have been given different talents, different giftings, different characteristics. But at the end of it, all, right, God designed us and created us for a purpose. And I think at a young age, kids can. Can even if they grasp that and look to God of who he says that they are, right? That's gonna. That's gonna be such a strong foundation for the rest of their lives. Really?
Christen Clark [00:21:24]:
Absolutely. I've interviewed so many different people on this show who, you know, something that was quirky about them as a kid or even a disability or an issue or something that they can't do anything about, they can't change. Like, I just recently interviewed a Paralympic swimmer who got gold medals, represented the United States, and she's partially blind. And so that visual impairment actually became a great. It was a gift. She said it was a gift to her because God was able to use that in her life for her to do great things. So we don't need to be discouraged when we get these labels because that could be the thing that God wants to do to use us to help someone else, to serve someone else, or just to glorify him.
Josh Combs [00:22:06]:
Absolutely. God uses those things that, that we deem as, as mistakes or mess ups. Right. He uses those things as strengths.
Christen Clark [00:22:14]:
Absolutely. The more we do that self discovery, I think the more we learn. Like God created us all so uniquely, we don't have to be like everybody else. Like, that's not the goal. We don't want to be. I don't want to be normal. I like my bright green glasses and my ability to talk way too much, you know. So God could use those things.
Josh Combs [00:22:31]:
Yes. Yeah, I know it's, it's definitely something where it can be so easy to think opposite of that. Right. But just everyone that's listening today be encouraged today that God really, he loves you, but he designed you with that specific purpose of mind, whatever that might be, and just, you know, embrace that of always looking to God, saying God, you know, even when I'm, I'm down or out because of, of maybe something that, that someone said to me or they call me a name, I want to look to God, the one who created me. Right. The one who created me and gave me that purpose. So I love that.
Christen Clark [00:23:03]:
Yeah. And then if you're someone today who like, I don't know what my purpose is, like, I don't know what I'm good at, like what you were saying before, just be willing to jump in, be willing to try new things, be willing to help out around the church when people ask for your help. And I think you're going to discover things about yourself as you do that. So I'm glad you gave that encouragement at the beginning. We do, we need to just put ourselves out there a little bit more than we do. Well, Josh, this has been so fun. I've loved talking with you today and getting to know you and I'd love for our listeners to find your YouTube channel. Can you tell us where to look for that?
Josh Combs [00:23:34]:
Yeah, absolutely. So my YouTube channel, it's called KidmanRocket K I D M I N Rocket. And you can go to YouTube.com@ because I think they have to do the @Symbo,l KidMinRocket. But if you type in Kidman Rocket, you'll see like a little rocket with a yellow background. I have all kinds of stuff on there. I have about 30, 35 videos that are called Bible Bites and they're, they're quick object lessons. I incorporate some humor, incorporate some co Editing. I have some action songs on there.
Josh Combs [00:24:06]:
I have a couple of things for, for kids trainers or training for kids ministers. So if you're in kids ministry, I have some things on there. But a lot of stuff for kids. So yeah, as they say, like and subscribe. So make sure you.
Christen Clark [00:24:19]:
Yeah, there you go. Like and subscribe.
Josh Combs [00:24:21]:
And then another thing too. Our, our kids rock. We do something called that kids rock show but tv.faithtabernacle.com so our church is faithtabernacle but tv.faithtabernacle.com if you go there, you scroll down just a little bit, it's not too far down, you'll see all these things. For kids. We have object lessons. We have what are called Bible beats. There's a girl at our church that will take a memory verse and she'll put it to a song so you can learn it pretty easily. We have games, we have lessons.
Josh Combs [00:24:52]:
So yeah, we have a lot of good stuff on there. Good content on their parents. You don't have to worry about ads or comments or anything crazy. So all that good stuff. So yeah, so those are some things that's something that we do for our church kids, but also for our community. We have a lot of families that will watch that and it's just good, you know, family friendly content for, for the whole family.
Christen Clark [00:25:14]:
Well, this has been so fun. Thanks so much for sharing today. Before I let you go, I always ask my guests to tell me a memory from when they were a kid. So I'd love to hear what your memory is today.
Josh Combs [00:25:23]:
Yes, absolutely. So when I was about 8 or 9 years old, my, my parents had this schedule where my dad would work during the day, he'd come home and then my mom would go work for a few hours. And so it was just me, my sister, I have a sister, Jaylene, who's four years younger than me. And you know, my dad would be watching us for those few hours there before we go to bed. And you know, my dad didn't do a whole lot of cooking all the time or anything, but you know, we, we would do the occasional McDonald's or pizza. And one time my sister and I really wanted pizza and my dad looked at us and said, okay, well you guys are going to have to earn it. And we're like, all right, you know, at 8 years old, I'll do whatever, whatever, I'll do it for pizza. So he, he said, follow me.
Josh Combs [00:26:03]:
So he walks to the kitchen, puts a timer, a five minute timer on the microwave. He says, you Guys have to jump up and down screaming, pizza for five minutes. And as they say, say less. Say less, fan. So my sister and I, we. Let's work. We got this. So we.
Josh Combs [00:26:19]:
For five minutes, we just jumped up and down screaming, pizza, Pizza, pizza, pizza. And sure enough, at the five minutes, we got our pizza. We got our, you know, dominoes or whatever it was. And so even to this day, my sister and I will always, you know, hey, you want some pizza? Let's see if it works. You know, it doesn't work anymore, but.
Christen Clark [00:26:38]:
Doesn't work anymore.
Josh Combs [00:26:39]:
Yes, yes. But anyway, that was. That was a fun little memory. I remember. And I'm sure, you know, kids are watching. They were siblings. There's always kind of fun little memories like that of. Of, you know, things that we experience.
Josh Combs [00:26:50]:
But.
Christen Clark [00:26:50]:
Yeah, yeah. Now, let me ask you a question. Did your dad stand there for the five minutes while you guys did that, or did he leave the room?
Josh Combs [00:26:57]:
That's a good question. I feel like, you know, I feel like he was maybe in the vicinity, like, you know, but the key was zay. He. He had to keep hearing us say pizza. So even if he went. Even if it went to the other room, it's like, you know, and I think at one point I do remember him saying, guys, you're not loud enough. You know, it's like, we're in the army or something. Let's hear louder.
Josh Combs [00:27:17]:
Come on, speak up. You know, and so, yeah, so, yeah, I think he was. He was kind of supervising in the area. But, yeah, he. He kept an eye on the fact that, you know, we were the whole time.
Christen Clark [00:27:28]:
Because I feel like as a parent, I would have done something like that because I had to get something done in five minutes. So, like, keep the kids here. Yeah, shout pizza. And I'm going to go fix all this stuff over here that you can't touch.
Josh Combs [00:27:39]:
That is so true.
Christen Clark [00:27:40]:
He's, like, eating, you know, delicious candy bars in the corner so you can't see him. So he's like, keep cheering.
Josh Combs [00:27:45]:
Yeah, yeah. As a parent now, I totally understand that, you know. You know, sometimes you just, like, you have a toy or something, you're just like, okay, here we go. Look at the toy. And then you run off and your quick chore that you couldn't, you know, you get the dishwasher open and, you know, Henry, he's getting a little bit out of that stage, but for a while there, he'd see the dishwasher, and he just thought it was like a play place, and he would just run towards it.
Christen Clark [00:28:09]:
Like, oh, look, knives.
Josh Combs [00:28:10]:
Yeah. Yes. Oh, look. Things that are breakable. You know, the toys you just got me. Look at this. Look at this bowl.
Christen Clark [00:28:17]:
Yes. Toddlers are good at that.
Josh Combs [00:28:18]:
Yes, they are.
Christen Clark [00:28:19]:
Well, Josh, thank you so much for being on the show today. This was great. That was so much fun. I loved how so much of Josh's story was just him being willing to jump in and serve in his church, and then outside his church, traveling and going on YouTube. It was all about his willingness to be available to God. And you know what he said? God knows what we need and where we need to be. So we just have to trust God and continue to be willing for God to use us however he wants. Josh also talked about how it can be easy to take labels to heart, especially if they're negative or something that we don't like about ourself.
Christen Clark [00:29:05]:
But it's not who we are. God is the one who tells us who we are. We're not just kids or whatever label people might put on us, but we are children of God, and we need to remember that wherever we go. And I loved when he said, what other people think about me is none of my business. That is so true. And I think a few adults need to hear that, as well as some kids. Can I get an amen? You can check out Josh on his YouTube channel @kidmanrocket. You can also go to his website, kidminrocket.com and see some of those great videos and object lessons he has.
Christen Clark [00:29:40]:
It's some really fun stuff. You're going to love it. Well, now it's time for our family conversation. So let's talk about it. Here are three questions that you and your family can discuss after listening to today's episode. First, think about all the people who work and teach and serve in your church. The kids, pastors, the teachers, the greeters, the people who set out the donuts and coffee, the person who sets up the chairs, the janitors, the past pastor who preaches on Sunday. What is one role or job in the church you think would be fun to try? All right, here's the next question.
Christen Clark [00:30:21]:
What is a natural ability or unique talent that you have? And maybe if you're not sure if you have a natural ability or unique talent, ask someone with you or ask one of your friends if they see something in you and talk about that for a minute. And here's the last one. Is there a way you can use that unique talent or that natural ability to honor God or to serve in the church or to help other people? What are some ways you could use those natural abilities and talents to help others and serve God? Well, I hope those question questions give you some fun things to talk about with your family. And if you're on social media, I would love to hear from you. Or if you want to snap a photo of your family or a video of your family having a conversation about this, I'd love to hear about how your family conversations are going.
