Christen Clark [00:02:32]:
Darren helped launch a thriving small Group ministry in North Carolina and later planted Remnant Church in Florida before joining LifePointe Church, where he now serves as the pastor of children and families. He's also a statewide VBS trainer. I love VBS for the Florida Baptist Convention, equipping churches to disciple young believers. Darren holds a degree in Business and leadership from Liberty University, and he and his wife Amy have been married for 19 years and they have three kids. You guys are going to love learning more about prayer from my conversation today. So here is my friend, Darren Goodrich. Darren, I am so excited to have you on the Collide Kids podcast today.
Darren Goodrich [00:03:22]:
Yes. I'm so excited to be here with you and get to see those green glasses on your face.
Christen Clark [00:03:26]:
Yeah, I love it. I know. They're my favorite color. Would you just introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do? Sure.
Darren Goodrich [00:03:34]:
My name is Darren Goodrich. I am the children's pastor at LifePointe Church in Eustis, Florida. And, you know, I write a little bit on my website. And then also, I love coffee. Yeah, I just love making it. I know how to make all the special things, but my favorite way to drink it is black.
Christen Clark [00:03:52]:
Mine is with just a little bit of creamer. I just need a little bit.
Darren Goodrich [00:03:56]:
Just a little bit.
Christen Clark [00:03:57]:
Yes.
Darren Goodrich [00:03:57]:
Every once in a while I go a little creamer.
Christen Clark [00:03:59]:
So, yeah, I. I just. I can't do it black. I used to work in a coffee shop, so, yeah, so I. I've learned all the different ways to make it, too. What's your favorite way to make it? Do you do like the slow pour over?
Darren Goodrich [00:04:11]:
The pour over. The pour over is pretty fancy. I do like the pour over.
Christen Clark [00:04:16]:
Now, when you're on the road and you need a cup of coffee, where do you go?
Darren Goodrich [00:04:19]:
I prefer to go to local places, but most often than not, I get gift cards to Starbucks or Dunkin's. So we usually end up stopping those places.
Christen Clark [00:04:28]:
There you go. That's good. I actually found, like a. There was like, a gas station somewhere in the middle of nowhere, and it had the best coffee because it, like, ground the beans right then and made, like, a fresh cup. So I think just. I just like fresh coffee is what it is.
Darren Goodrich [00:04:43]:
Yes.
Christen Clark [00:04:43]:
I was like, this is the best coffee here at Racetrack.
Darren Goodrich [00:04:46]:
Racetrack, yes.
Christen Clark [00:04:47]:
Okay. I'm excited to talk to you. Maybe not so much about coffee. We'll talk about other things. But because this is a show for kids, I always ask my guests to tell me a joke. So what do you have for us today?
Darren Goodrich [00:04:57]:
Why did Noah have to discipline the Chickens on the ark.
Christen Clark [00:05:02]:
Ooh, I don't know.
Darren Goodrich [00:05:04]:
Because they were using foul language.
Christen Clark [00:05:08]:
They were using that foul language.
Darren Goodrich [00:05:12]:
My kids approved that joke. So there were others that were like, no, where. You can't do that, dad. You'll embarrass us.
Christen Clark [00:05:18]:
I find that a lot of my guests do that. They'll like, pick a joke and then they'll run it by their kids or a few kids they know, you know, shout it from the their window in their neighborhood. You guys like this joke? Well, let's talk a little bit about how you got started as a children's pastor because I think this is so interesting. There's lots of different ways that people can serve the Lord. It doesn't always have to be at a church, but you found yourself working with families and kids. How did that get started?
Darren Goodrich [00:05:44]:
So I stepped into children's ministry because one, you know, God called me to it, but it didn't always seem, I didn't always see it clearly. And you know, God first called me into ministry when I was about 16, but also at that same time I was kind of thriving in the business world. And I naturally, I thought, well, maybe this is what God means. Maybe I'm supposed to be called to marketplace ministry. And so that's kind of the direction that I pursued for over 20 years. Then over time, God began to, he began to reestablish his calling on my life, not to just serve in the marketplace, but to pastor his people through the local church. And so I began to look for ministry opportunities and eventually accepted an internship that placed me into small group ministry at my church. It was a great learning experience and helps clarify next steps for my life.
Darren Goodrich [00:06:35]:
But later I felt that the Lord was calling me to plant a micro church, which is a small church, it's home based. And so really it was my living room. And you know, God in His wisdom decided to lay it on my heart during COVID Oh, wow. Of all seasons, right? And so for, you know, over two years, you know, we had, I had the privilege of, of pastoring alongside someone else in my community. And we served hands on in a relational way. But. But then after a season of prayer and discernment, God began to, to really reveal something to my family and me. And that while I was following the right calling, I still hadn't found the right fit.
Darren Goodrich [00:07:16]:
And through more prayer and reflection, the Lord reminded me of his faithfulness and he again stirred that my heart again with a deep desire to know him and to see him known and loved in every generation. And that's when I knew without a doubt that children and family ministry was where I belonged. Now I'm entering into the third year of my time here at LifePointe Church and it's been such a life giving journey. And around here we like to call it finding your life point. Where your passions and your desires intersect with God's calling. That's your life point. And I truly believe that I found mine.
Christen Clark [00:07:55]:
I love that, that you have a life point, because I think that's true. So many people think I don't know if I can serve God because I don't like to talk in front of people or I'm not good at telling people about Jesus or I'm not good at, you know, they think about things they're not good and they think that's what God's gonna call them to do is something they're not good at. But God created us on purpose, with a purpose, and so it's gonna line up with the things that we're talented in, the ways that he's gifted us. And so I love that you make that a life point. That's a good way to put it. I love that. So let's talk a little bit about prayer. And I love this.
Christen Clark [00:08:26]:
You, you had posted about this on social media and I saw this, I was like, oh, you've gotta come share this with the Collide Kids podcast listeners because I think this is such a great way to think about prayer and to learn to pray in a different way and also to teach our kids about prayer. So share with us your, your method of praying.
Darren Goodrich [00:08:43]:
So it's called Pray with God. And you know, I put together a simple guide for parents to kind of help lead their children. It really came out of, you know, a church that I was a part of in North Carolina. It was kind of in the beginning workings, and I just loved the idea of praying with God. And a couple of us were reading Donald Whitney's book, Praying the Bible, and I think this idea came from that. And so I've just been using it for years and I thought, well, it's been so helpful for my family, it's going to be helpful for other families too. And so what I've had to learn is you got to start where you are, right? And that's, that's hard for all of us, right? But that's it. You just got to start where you are.
Darren Goodrich [00:09:28]:
There's, there's no pressure to have it all figured out, right? You just start where you are. And it's a lesson that I've had to learn many times, right? To be honest, I'm still learning it. You know, there's a book that kind of helped me kind of think through this a little bit. It's called the Next Right Thing by Emily P. Freeman.
Christen Clark [00:09:45]:
Yeah, I love that book.
Darren Goodrich [00:09:46]:
She talks about how Jesus, when he healed people, he often gave them simple instructions. Nothing complicated, no big fancy plan, just the next step. And so a little Bible story most of us know, right, about the man who couldn't walk. You know, he had four amazing friends. And these guys were awesome because they didn't just bring him to Jesus, they carried him on a mat. They couldn't get through the crowd, so they, they climbed up on the roof, they picked him up, they put him on the roof with him, they cut a hole in the roof, and then they lowered him at the feet of Jesus. Can you imagine that? Kids like having friends that close and love you so much that they would do that for you. That's awesome.
Christen Clark [00:10:27]:
Can you imagine being in the room and the roof starts caving in? You're like, whoa, I know, right?
Darren Goodrich [00:10:32]:
As an adult, like, what are you doing to my roof? You know, but, but what did Jesus say to the man? He had compassion. He didn't, he didn't give him a five year plan or, or say, okay, now, now that I'm about to heal you, you've got a thousand things that you have to do to stay healed. No. Jesus simply said, get up, take your mat, and go home. Three simple instructions. That was this man's next right step. That was where his new journey began. And you know, sometimes I think we're, we're so busy looking at what everyone else is doing.
Darren Goodrich [00:11:07]:
You know, we see this friend getting an award, or this family's taking a big vacation, or someone's getting a promotion, and we forget what God has called you two, what he's called me to. And he's called each of us to something special. We have to start where we are. And you know, another story that I'm reminded by this? In John 21, you know, Peter is walking with Jesus and he looks over at his friend John and, and ask, well, what about him? Because Jesus has just told Peter, restored Peter after his denial. He, like, he says, hey, feed my lambs, shepherd, my sheep, feed my sheep. And he says, peter, I'm putting you in charge. And he's like, concerned about what John's doing. And he's like, jesus says, that doesn't concern you.
Darren Goodrich [00:11:52]:
You follow me? And parents, kids, God has a unique plan for each of us. And the best way to begin walking in that plan is to start where you are. And again, that's why I created this guide for families to help. Help you begin praying together at home. Because teaching your kids to pray doesn't have to be hard. It just has to be real.
Christen Clark [00:12:17]:
I think a lot of people think that prayer is hard. They think it's really difficult. I don't know what to say. I don't know what to do. And so they kind of get bogged down in it and they don't do it, or they're afraid to teach theological truths to their kids because they don't know all the answers. But I love this encouragement. Just start where you are. Start with the basics, Start with the next right thing.
Christen Clark [00:12:37]:
And God's going to teach you as you're teaching your kids, you know?
Darren Goodrich [00:12:40]:
Yes. I've created some. Some a method and a structure here. But prayer isn't a script. It's a relationship.
Christen Clark [00:12:47]:
Right.
Darren Goodrich [00:12:48]:
It's a conversation with our. With our loving Father. And again, the pattern is with. Right. And so kind of like acts. But it's hard for kids to understand what supplication is.
Christen Clark [00:13:00]:
Yeah, that's the one I learned was acts. Yeah. Adorate was the adoration, confession, confession, thanksgiving, Supplication.
Darren Goodrich [00:13:07]:
Supplication.
Christen Clark [00:13:08]:
And I never like supper. Supplication.
Darren Goodrich [00:13:10]:
Yeah, Supper. Like, yeah, I'll give Jesus my supper. But the acronym with wow, I'm sorry, thank you and help. And so that's why it's called pray with God.
Christen Clark [00:13:25]:
Yeah. And I love that you said that. Like, you're using the scripture, but you're using this with method to pray through the scripture. Because I think we forget that we can do that, that we can use God's word to pray. So you said with is wow. So, like, we're looking for things that we adore, things that we love about God, things that are amazing. I'm sorry. Is where we confess our sins.
Christen Clark [00:13:45]:
We look, we confess who we are and recognize who we are. Then thank you. So we're thanking God for the things that we have, the things that we can see, and then help. And I think a lot of times we skip to help. Yeah, we're like, we just do the help part.
Darren Goodrich [00:14:00]:
We need a lot of it.
Christen Clark [00:14:01]:
Right, right, right. But I love that you're doing this with scripture. Now. How would a kid use that same method as they're reading through scripture and praying through scripture?
Darren Goodrich [00:14:10]:
Yes. So, wow, God, you're awesome. I can trust you and find joy in You. I'm sorry I didn't obey you or my mom and dad today, and I sinned. Please forgive me. Thank you for being a safe place for me, Jesus. Help me to be kind and believe that your word is true. So much simpler.
Darren Goodrich [00:14:32]:
You know, it's not a church service, right. It's something that you can do within just a couple of minutes. Right. Read the scripture, I think family worship. I can't remember the author's name right now, but family worship, he talks about. Read, pray and sing. And all of that should be done within, like 10 to 15 minutes.
Christen Clark [00:14:49]:
Right.
Darren Goodrich [00:14:50]:
And so parents don't have to overthink it. You know, our kids, they learn most from watching us. And if.
Christen Clark [00:14:56]:
Right.
Darren Goodrich [00:14:56]:
And if we pray honestly, then they're going to do the same, you know, And. And sometimes our minds wander. Right. Or a baby cries, or someone spills the milk halfway through. It's okay. Yeah, that's real life. And real life is. Is where God meets us.
Christen Clark [00:15:13]:
And I think it's really important, what you said, too, that we have to set that example as parents. So sometimes it's not gonna be like knowing the right answer, just us doing it, being a part of it, and being willing to do it. It reminds me of when my kids were in preschool. We would do a prayer time where we would say, you know, we have to say something we're thankful for, something we're sorry for, and then something we wanna ask God to help us with. And so we would talk about it and then we would all pray for it. And, like, the kids had already gone. And so it was my husband's turn and my turn, and my son said, hey, do you guys wanna pray and say you're sorry for being so angry today? And we're like, sure. Thanks.
Christen Clark [00:15:51]:
Thanks for. So I think our kids need to see that we are confessing our sins. We are asking God for help. We are being wowed by who God is. And when we're doing that, that's such a great example to them to do that as well.
Darren Goodrich [00:16:06]:
My kids have called me out too. So, you know, I'm sure all of us have a story like that. Yeah, they're great at it.
Christen Clark [00:16:12]:
Great at it. They really are. So I'm thinking about some of those families that are listening today that are like, okay, you know, my kids are older. We've never really done family devotions. We don't even know where to start. Is there even a point to starting now? Because, you know, we haven't done it when they were little. Is that a Good idea to start that now. Is it okay to start now, or should we just throw the towel?
Darren Goodrich [00:16:33]:
Yeah, start now. Right. Start where you are. Because, you know, a relationship with Jesus is ever growing. And so, again, think about any type of relationship you have. There has to be communication. There has to be a desire to get to know who it is that you're wanting to. To love.
Darren Goodrich [00:16:53]:
Right? And so if you're not having conversations with God, if you're not learning more about Jesus, you're gonna end up empty. Right. And the relationship won't last. And so start where you are.
Christen Clark [00:17:05]:
Definitely. I think this is something that's so easy for preschoolers to learn to do as well as adults. We can all. And it's just a guide, like you said. It's not a script. We don't have to say all the things in that order. But I think it's a good way to start. We need to begin with acknowledging who God is.
Christen Clark [00:17:20]:
We need to confess our sins. We need to be thankful, and then we need to go to him and say, okay, I need your help, because I can't do it on my own. So if we recognize all this stuff, that helps us get to the help part. Tell me, what's something that you have learned about prayer through this? As you're teaching this to families in your church or to your kids, what's something that you've learned about prayer?
Darren Goodrich [00:17:41]:
I would say that the more I do it, the more I want to have, like, I look forward to it, right? And so I get excited about being able to spend time with. With God and his Word. And, you know, and if I miss it, if. If I miss a day and I get too busy and distracted, like, I feel it throughout the day. And so praying with God really kind of sets my tone for the day. I notice when I'm like, the way I respond or talk to my kids, I'm like, oh, that was. That was a little harsh. You know, I need to.
Darren Goodrich [00:18:19]:
I need to ask my children to forgive me for. For speaking that way, and I need to then go before God. Right? And so I've just learned that it's a necessity. I have to do it. And when I don't, I see the effects of my flesh taking over instead of how I should act and respond, you know, as a. As a follower of Jesus.
Christen Clark [00:18:41]:
Yeah, that's good. And. Yeah, and I think, too, it's just making it a part of your life. It doesn't have to be. I think we get this lofty idea of how we're Supposed to spend time with God, but he's with us throughout our day. And so it could be an ongoing conversation as you're, you know, busy parents doing all the things you gotta do or busy kids going through school. You can still spend time with God and talk to him.
Darren Goodrich [00:19:02]:
Any time I'm reminded, you know, a quote by Martin Luther. Right. And he talks about how he has this really busy day ahead of him. So he'll spend an extra three hours in prayer, you know, like, because it's so important. Right. Because the Lord determines our steps. He, He. He has everything under his control and we get to participate in what he.
Darren Goodrich [00:19:27]:
How he leads us. And so when we put God at the forefront of our lives, he's going to do what only he can do. You know, I can, I can act like I know and have control over what's going on in my life, but I don't.
Christen Clark [00:19:41]:
Right.
Darren Goodrich [00:19:42]:
I have control over very little. And so I said three hours. Maybe it's an hour. I don't remember. Sometimes things get embellished. But you know what I'm saying, it just reminds us that we have to focus on this because it is a relationship.
Christen Clark [00:19:58]:
That's right.
Darren Goodrich [00:19:59]:
And Jesus died for us to have this relationship. So that just amplifies the importance of it. Like, look, he died in my place on the cross so that I could have a relationship with God again.
Christen Clark [00:20:11]:
Yeah, that's good. I love that. So you have created a resource for parents. It's free. Tell us about this free resource that you've provided for helping parents teach their kids about Jesus. About praying.
Darren Goodrich [00:20:24]:
Yes. So it's called Pray with God A Guide for Parents. It's on my website, daringoodrich.com, you'll find it there under the shop, but it is one of the free items there. And again, I just, I wanted to equip parents to help help their children pray and help provide a method that they are going to be able to remember easily so that they could take this model and it can just be a rhythm in their home of just creating an atmosphere and an environment of prayer.
Christen Clark [00:20:54]:
So it's on your website. We'll make sure to put that in our show notes. So if you're looking for that resource, you can find it in our show notes and, and visit with Darren on his website too. Darren, thank you so much for being on the show today. This was so good. I'm excited for our parents to. And our families to start praying with God and learning this method. I think this is gonna be really helpful for A lot of people.
Christen Clark [00:21:14]:
So thank you for doing this.
Darren Goodrich [00:21:16]:
Thank you.
Christen Clark [00:21:17]:
Before I let you go, I always ask my guests to tell me a memory from when they were a kid. So do you have a memory you want to share with us today?
Darren Goodrich [00:21:25]:
You know, one of my favorite memories growing up came from being part of a really big family. I'm the oldest of five boys, and.
Christen Clark [00:21:33]:
Oh, wow.
Darren Goodrich [00:21:33]:
And. And. And, yeah, that. With that many boys under one roof, let's just say we didn't exactly stay out of trouble. But. But even in the chaos, family has always meant everything to me. And. And one of the things that I cherished most was it seemed like it was every month.
Darren Goodrich [00:21:52]:
It could have been, like, every big holiday, but as a kid, it felt like it was like, at least once a month where after church on Sunday, the whole extended family, and I'm talking, like, nearly 100 people, would gather at my mama and papa's house. It was, you know, small town. It felt like a small town reunion, but it was just family every time. Yeah, we had long tables filled with foods, kids running around, laughter echoing throughout the house. You know, every once everyone was fed. The adults would settle in for a card game or go watch football, while the kids just, you know, including me and my brothers, would head outside and play on my. My papa's ranch. And we would climb trees, build forts, played hide and seek until the sun went down.
Darren Goodrich [00:22:34]:
Like, it was simple, but it was sacred. Right. Now that I'm a dad and, you know, I find so much joy bringing my kids to those same type of family gatherings. We just had one last week for my. My mama turning 85.
Christen Clark [00:22:47]:
Oh, that's awesome.
Darren Goodrich [00:22:48]:
And what blows my mind is watching them play the same games in the same yard, doing the same silly stuff that I did as a kid. It's like watching Legacy unfold in real time. Right?
Christen Clark [00:23:00]:
Yeah. Yeah.
Darren Goodrich [00:23:01]:
You know, just kind of reflecting on this, that God is honored when generations come together.
Christen Clark [00:23:06]:
That's true.
Darren Goodrich [00:23:07]:
And that we need each other, young and old, kids and grandparents. Every generation brings something valuable to the table. And at the end of the day, I think the greatest legacy that we can leave is this a family that follows Jesus together.
Christen Clark [00:23:19]:
That's right.
Darren Goodrich [00:23:19]:
I saw that growing up, and I'm praying that for my. My own family now. And. And so keep those family memories happening, because when you grow up, you'll wish you spent more time with family than other things.
Christen Clark [00:23:31]:
That's exactly right. That's so good. I love that. And I had a memaw and pawpaw too, so I love that you did that. And we would do lunches at their house and it was always just the best food, you know, it was so good. Well, Darren, thank you so much for being on the show today. This was great.
Darren Goodrich [00:23:46]:
Thank you.
Christen Clark [00:23:55]:
Wasn't that so good? That is so helpful. Okay. The pattern is with W, I, T, H. Wow. I'm sorry. Thank you. And help. That's so good.
Christen Clark [00:24:08]:
I really appreciated how Darren shared at the beginning that it's so important to start where you are. There's no pressure to have it all figured out. The main thing is to remember that God wants a relationship with you and the best way to get started, and that is learning to pray. Darren said we can't compare ourselves and start where someone else is on their journey, but we need to start where we are today. He also said that teaching your kids to pray doesn't have to be hard. And this pattern is so helpful, it's easy to remember, but it's not about saying the right thing or following the formula perfectly each time. It's about being in a relationship with God and having conversations with him. So true.
Christen Clark [00:24:49]:
Now, I love this pattern. I love this idea of praying with God, and I've actually already taught this to my kids, and I'm using it as a framework for how I'm praying, especially for people like me who get distracted sometimes. This is such a great tool for young people and old people alike. So if you want to learn more about this, Darren has a free resource that you can download from his website, darrengoodrich.com. So definitely head over there and check that out. All right, now it's time for my favorite part of the show. It's our family discussion time.
Christen Clark [00:25:22]:
So I'm going to ask you a few questions to help you keep the conversation going with your family. You can pause after each question or you can take some time to talk about them later after hearing all three. Whatever works best for your family. So let's talk about it. Here's the first one. If you could pray anywhere in the world, like on a mountain or at the beach or even in space, where would you want to pray and why? Or you can just share your favorite place to pray. All right, number two, which part of the with prayer feels the easiest for you? Now, remember, with stands for wow, I'm sorry, thank you, and help. Which one of those feels the easiest for you to pray and which one feels the hardest? And number three, why do you think it's important to pray together as a family? How does it help us grow closer to God and to each other.
Christen Clark [00:26:20]:
