Over and over again, he is helping us orient ourselves to our inner disposition and turning our attention away from externals. Especially when it comes to mental states, we tend to feel that we are absolutely dependent on external things to have the mental state that we want.
If I want to be happy, I've got to go out and eat something or drink something or watch something. But someone who has awareness of the enormous capacities within us is able to say from personal experience, “Everything we're looking for is inside of us.”
And that gives us a tremendous amount of freedom and liberation from forces, like in our civilization in particular, the forces of advertising, both political and commercial to push us around and make us behave in ways that they want.
