Of course, independence was the rallying cry for the Indian freedom struggle. No one worked harder to bring that about in the outside world. He was always at pains to remind us that true independence comes from within, and then gets expressed in the outside world. And what does that independence mean? Not so much independence from others, but independence from our own negative impulses. That's where the real power came from.
