Day 364

The Metta Center for Nonviolence Season 2024 Episode 364

Just as preservation of one's own culture does not mean contempt for that of others, but requires assimilation of the best that there may be in all of the other cultures, even so, should be the case with religion.

-Gandhi, Young India, December 6, 1928

Yeah, we've referred to this earlier as the principle of unity in diversity. And the magic of it being that the unity, real heart unity, to use Gandhi's expression, comes from the kind of diversity where each individual and each culture, in this case each religion, fulfills itself.

So, that is the wonder of it, really. And if I fulfill myself, if I fulfill the ideology that to which I'm dedicated, I don't interfere with others, I actually complement their fulfillment. That makes peace possible throughout the entire world.
