Welcome back to This Is My Circus — the podcast where vacation stories turn into survival tales, dating apps require emotional support, and somehow we end up talking about capybaras, fireworks, hot soccer players, Kanye telepathy, and murder books all in one episode.

This week, Meredith is back from the Gulf Coast with stories about non-cuddly capybaras, a pontoon boat adventure that almost became an accidental trip to Cuba, and the kind of vacation reset she didn’t realize she needed.

Meanwhile, Stefanie has entered a brand-new phase of life: Facebook dating. After being out of the dating world for 27 years, she’s learning the rules, Googling first-date expectations, and realizing that suggesting a hike with a stranger may not be the safest plan.

🎙️ In This Episode:

We’re talking about:

  • Meredith’s Gulf Coast vacation and the capybara experience that was less snuggly than expected
  • Renting a pontoon boat with almost no instructions and accidentally heading toward the Gulf
  • Why clear water, sand dollars, and starfish beat Dirty Myrtle every time
  • Stefanie joining Facebook Dating after 27 years out of the dating world
  • Awkward dating profiles, first-date anxiety, and why a picnic in the woods may not be the move
  • Fourth of July fireworks, stressed-out dogs, and why fireworks are beautiful but also kind of terrible
  • World Cup updates, attractive soccer players, and why Nigeria’s goalkeeper may convert Stephanie into a soccer fan
  • Freddy from Germany still living his best American vacation life
  • A mama beluga whale escaping captivity to find her baby
  • Weird news involving Kanye West “telepathy,” Gorilla Glue revenge, and a nursing home party queen
  • Taylor and Travis wedding talk, charity donations, and why we definitely weren’t invited

💬 Am I The A-Hole?

I'm Stephanie. I'm Meredith. And welcome to This Is My Circus. Hey. Hi, how are you? Oh, I'm vacationed. I know. I know, your pictures were The capyb- oh. So can I tell you about that? Yes. Okay, so- Please, I wanna hear all about it we went to the Gulf Coast. It was amazing. Brian, Jackson and I, and then we took one of Jackson's friends. You know normally we take seven. Um. Six, seven. I know. I don't know why that flopped out of my mouth, but anyway, we normally take, take six- Three, six, nine. No. Three, six, nine. Um, oh my gosh, now all the numbers are in my head. Eight, six, seven. Okay. Stop. We took a friend. We went to the capybara expe- cap- see, and I can't say the word. Jackson's always like, "It's capybara." But bara sounds like to me like country people say borrow. No, it, I always call it bara. I'm like, "Capybaras." Or so- like, I never say it right. Anyway, we went to see them. We went to pet them. We went to love on them. It was fun. It was great. Are they, super snuggly? No. Oh. That's why you see this upset face. They will let you pet them, they will let you love on them, you can feed them, but they did not crawl in my lap and give me snuggles. And I was very upset. I would be too. I wanted lovies. I wanted them to cuddle me. Yeah. And that is not what happened. They literally just sat there. So Dylan really likes this animal, and- I feel like they just look like ginormous hamsters- They are which kind of freaked me out a little bit. Right. Well, they're rodents. I know, and that freaks me out that they're that big. Yes, yes. Agreed. they're very big, uh, not the size of Rex, but but they can be up to, like, 120 pounds. Well, that is Rex. That is Rex. Well, the ones that were there were not. But they, yeah, they're very big, and their fur, hair, whatever it is, is almost spiky. And, like, you're rubbing 'em, and you can feel, it's just- No, I don't like that. No. Mm-mm. They were not the baby goats that we had experienced. Now, ha, am I sad that I went and did this? No. No. Would I do it again? Honestly, probably not, just because, I mean, it was an experience, and you know how I feel about experiences. But I, I need a snugglier animal. I need a more interactive animal. Like, even a sloth, putting its arms- And they had a sloth there, but I didn't sign up for the sloth experience 'cause I didn't know what the sloth experience was. Anyway, it was great. Glad I did it, can say I did it. But- Yeah they were not my favorite- No animal. But we did have a good time. Yeah. Yeah. We rented a boat one day. Okay. And that was a lot of fun. Did you go fishing or did you just went on the boat? I'm just laughing because it was, it was terrible. So- Oh. Um, well, okay, the boat itself was good. The boat itself, the boat rides. We rented a boat for us four, a pontoon boat just for us to cruise around and there's all these kinda little islands out there. And I guess every ocean, I don't know how it works. But, you can't see them from, the shore, but once you get out there in a boat, you're like, "Oh," and you just, go and look and look for shells and just- Yeah enjoy the pretty water and, and all the things. So- There's no weird, like, aliens that come. Right. Right. So you- I'm glad I didn't think about that then. So you, you report to this dock where they rent jet skis and, you know, the banana boat ride, all the fun things. And you sign this waiver online- Mm-hmm and you pay your money. And then you go up to this window where this girl who's, like, 17 and a half is telling you, the safety rules, and she's talking like this, and you... I, I mean, you can't hear her. She's behind the glass. And, you get to the boat, and there's this dude bro there who's probably also 17 and a half, but he looks like he lives on the water. It's like the Outer Banks dude, you know? Yeah. They know how to drive a boat without even thinking about it. Yeah. It's been a minute since Brian has driven a boat. I've never driven a boat. Mm-mm. And Brian can drive anything. I think we've talked about that before. Yeah. so he's like, "Yeah, you just put this in here, and you slip this here. And if the Coast Guard asks, your life jacket's under there." And they're like, "Have a good time." And He's like, "Don't go here, and don't, don't go to the naval base." I'm like, "Mm." And all in my mind I'm picturing is Bad Boys where they like- run onto the, um, thing, and they're, like, the US Embassy, and they're like, "I'm American. I'm American." So he's like, "Don't go there, and don't go into the Gulf." And I'm like, "Okay, the... Stay away from those two things, right?" So. I wouldn't know, which direction that was. And my sense of direction, I use GPS coming to your house. And how many times have I been here? I do not know directions, so. But I'm the copilot. Yeah. Anyway, we get out there. We have a good time. It's like a four-hour thing. You're supposed to be back by 5:00. Cool. No problem. We're heading back. We gave ourselves like 30, 45 minutes, giving ourselves plenty of time. And they give you this map, and it's like- You, all the way back you're looking at it upside down trying to figure out where... We're heading, like, straight out in the Gulf. Like, I missed all the turns, and it's like, "Where, why is all this water so blue?" Wait, so it was an actual map? Like a real map? Yes. Oh, God. Yes. I mean, hon- honestly, it was kind of like a cartoon map, like probably a preschool map. But yeah, and I couldn't read it. Pirate treasure X. Pretty much, with the X. It did have skull and crossbones where, like, it was shallow and you're not supposed to go there. Oh my God. But my thing is... Okay, so actually, let me go back. We were late. I had to call him from the boat, like, "We took a wrong turn." We took a wrong turn. We were late. We're coming back. And Brian gets frustrated in those situations. He is not a, "It'll all work out." Yeah. He is like a, "Oh." "Oh, no." Yeah. Yeah. And I'm trying to still have a good vacation vibe going. Yeah. You know, the boys are like, "Oh, just living their best lives," or whatever. Meredith's putting on like, "Don't worry." Yeah, pretty much. Pretty much. But the thing is, when we got on this boat and we headed out, dude bro jumped to another boat and gave them the same spiel, and their faces were the same as ours. So basically, you're just putting all these tourists who have no idea what they're doing out into this open water saying, "Good luck. Don't go to A and B," and hoping everybody makes it back. We come back, we dock. They don't check to make sure we have an, all of our people, that we didn't steal anything, that we left anything. They're just like, "Okay." "Have a good vacation." And bro just, jumps on the boat and wheels it in just, like, one-handed, and we're just like- No, no mention that we're, like, 45 minutes late getting back because we were on an excursion to the golf. It was a great time, though. It was great. Memories. Memories. Really neat, though, going to the islands where, the water was super clear and really shallow. Mm-hmm. And just, s- not even really snorkeling, just, the goggles on looking. So many sand dollars and starfish and different things than we have at Dirty Myrtle. Mm-hmm. So. Yeah. I know, you can't even see there. Oof. So those were, um, those were some of the best parts of the trip. The capybaras that didn't cuddle me, and then the fact that almost got us lost at sea. So, you know, it's a great vacation. If you hit Cuba, you went too far. Right, pretty much. That's how it felt. Oh my gosh, so anyway. Well, that was fun. Yeah. Yeah. Sure. You guys are tan. I feel tan. I'm white as a ghost. I'm... It'll, it'll fade because, you know, desk job. Mm-hmm. Well, you know. But it was a good time. It was good to go away and good to get away I haven't had a vacation like that in so long. And you know, with all the side businesses we have too- Mm-hmm and I, we, I worked on those a little bit. Like, I had a wedding call, and then I had, to figure out our lawn care schedule. But just stepping away from the major stuff- Mm-hmm and not having to look at it every day, I needed that. Yeah. And I forgot how much I needed that. Yeah. I actually told Brian, I was like, "We're doing this again next year." Maybe not the exact same spot. Panama City was beautiful. Mm-hmm. It was great. It was what we needed. But maybe a little less party next time. It wasn't, it was just too crowded. Yeah. Yeah, it's a tourist spot. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Hot tourist spot. I just knew that there was stuff to keep the boys entertained there. But anyway, sorry, went on a tangent. No. Great time. Glad to be back. Glad to have some tan. But anyway, anyway, what have you been doing? I mean, I know, I know you've been, uh- Making friends? So we've talked about, um, Dylan encouraging me to date. Yes. So, yes, we, started my Facebook dating profile. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. So that's been interesting. If you know any men that have a good credit score between the ages of. No.. Wait, men. Are we saying men? Are we open to anybody with a yacht or? No, I'm just kidding. If you got a sugar daddy to send my way- or a sugar mama, I'm good either way. The price is right. You know. We, um- It is what... You know, gas is expensive these days. It is yeah has it been going good though? Is it kind of what you expected, like trying to- I don't know because- I didn't know what to expect. I have been out of this game for 27 years. Yeah. So I had no clue what to expect. I've never even looked at any kind of dating sites before. Yeah. This is, like, so scary. Yeah. It's okay. But- We're here with you it's all good. So- Yeah it's been, it's been interesting. Yeah. Yeah. Texting- That's what's scary well, I mean, like, on the app and stuff. Yeah. And so it's... I'm so awkward and I feel bad for anybody that has- Thanks for trying to make me sound normal. that has to go on a date with me. Oh, no. I'm so awkward. Like, I'm not, the cool person I used to be. I'm really not. I think, see, this is where I have a problem. I think I am, but then I have one of those out-of-body experiences and I hear myself and I realize I am not. Yeah. The place I'm the most awkward for some reason is in a drive-through. Oh. Like, I feel the need when people are handing me my food at that point to make corny jokes. Yeah. And Jackson, it used to drive him crazy. When he'd be with me, he'd be like, really? We're doing this again?" So at least, yours is just new people. Mine is just everybody. I'm awkward with everybody. At least yours is just new people. You're not awkward though. I'm so awkward. I'm so awkward. I'm such a nerd. Nerds are hot. I just, like, I'm so scared of this phase of life. So I will keep you posted. Yeah. We shall see. Yeah. I don't know what's gonna happen or, Or what's not or if I'm gonna end up in bed in a ball crying and saying, "I, I, nope, I'm good." Well, I think it's gonna be great. Okay. I think it's gonna be fun. Mm-hmm. I think you just need to- Embrace it Uh-huh, and just kinda go with, go with whatever. Like, just- If you saw what my Google history is Give us a taste. What's in your Google history? What are expectations on a first date? Maybe that should be a new segment, what's your Google history look like today? It's okay. What are they, though? Well, and then I was like, like, is there ex- like, how many dates is the, normal, average expectation where, it's supposed to get physical? 'Cause- Yeah I'm petrified. Yeah, I get that. Petrified. And- 'Cause you're hideous I- I would be, too. If I looked like you, I would be scared. I'm just kidding. It's so weird. It's so weird. Yeah, yeah. It's like, ugh. But wait, what are the expectations? So it said, it's like, oh, well, it's up to every, you know, everyone has their own expectation. Stupid chat, give me a better answer. And it was like, average, for, intimacy- Yeah is between three and eight dates. I'm like, that's not very many. What if you have, like, two dates a week? That's not a lot. Like- That's not a lot. But I feel like that is better than, the standard f- why do I always think three dates in my head? That was not my rule. But I feel like on TV shows it's always like, you know, the third date. I, no, I- Well, and what constitutes as a date? So many questions. Oh. Well, one guy was like, "Oh, what would be your perfect first date?" I'm like, "I don't know." I'm not a big drinker, so it's not like I'm wanna go to a, you know- Right whatever. And so I'm like, "Oh, I don't know, like hiking and a picnic." And he's like, "You're gonna go into the woods with a guy you don't know?" And I'm like, "I'm really bad at this." Choose the bear, Steph. Choose the bear. Okay, so can we do, like, a picnic at the police station parking lot? You should say, like, a rage room or something. So then I was like, "Okay, well hear me out." Uh-huh. "For twins, because y- like, you will see if the person is patient with the lines." Mm-hmm. You will see if they're a thrill-seeker with roller coasters. Mm-hmm. And if you really hate the person, you can fake sick after a rollercoaster and dip. That's actually good. You shouldn't put... Don't put- add that in though, 'cause other people will steal it. Yeah. Well, so the guy was like, "Or, if they really suck, you can just unhook their, um- Ooh on the rollercoaster, their safety bar." Look at him. I'm like Bachelor number one. No, it's been- Or if you really like them, you could do the rides that, push you closer together and... i'm just, I'm s- I, this is, this is so weird. So weird. Well, you were, you were with one person longer than you were without them- Yeah basically. So. So, yeah, So my awful, profile, let me read you my profile. Do you like long walks on the beach? That is not what I put on there. If I put that I like long walks on the beach, you know something's wrong. If mine says, "Sit on the beach" with a, with a fruity drink," then that's okay. Long walks doing anything, count me out. Yeah. Well, mine says, "Applications are now open, but warning, I'm not good at this." That's cute though. That's cute. My last first date was 27 years ago. That's what- So they could be interpreting this as you just got out of prison. Maybe. Well. Not that far off. Not, not metaphorically speaking. Minimum requirements, emotionally available, has healed enough to know that not every disagreement is a war, financially responsible, and doesn't have a history of cheating. You know, that's not, you're not reaching for the stars there. No. You're really not. You just want somebody who's decent. About me, single mom to an 8-year-old son, entrepreneur, professional overthinker turned professional people helper. I believe life gets a lot easier when you heal your soul, and that tacos solve 40% of the world's problems. They do. They do. One guy came back and said, "It's not tacos, it's chicken wings." I'm like, "Eh, we're gonna end this here." Oh. Yeah. D- you blocked him, right? Mm-hmm. Oh. Blocked the button. Yeah. Good, good. So- Good response. Mm-hmm. Well, this'll be a fun... Experience Fun experience. I'm for the, I'm here for the ride. Yeah. But we're not doing a hoe phase, right? No. No. Okay. I was just confirming, 'cause, you know- What, what are the expectations? Well, but that's what I'm confirming, 'cause I was excited for that. Oh. 'Cause I wanted to live through, like vicariously through... I never had a hoe phase. Me either. So I wanted to know what it was like. Yeah. All right. Anywho. Well, I can't wait to hear how all that goes. You're gonna be pleasantly surprised and amused and entertained. I'm so sorry to anybody who- To anybody that dates you. I'm gonna give you flash cards. With Talking Tom? Mm-hmm. And you'll just, like, end up saying them randomly. He'll be like, "Hey, so, you know, what do you like to do?" And you'll look at the card, and it'll be like, "What do you think about the, hot dog eating contest on the 4th of July?" And he's like, "What?" Speaking of, that's so gross. So gross. So gross. So... no. I, mm-mm. I... Did you ever watch, MTV when it, they had those shows, it was like compulsive stuff- Mm-hmm and they had the eating competition people? That's so disgusting to me. And how they trained for it. What do they do? They, binge and purge? They eat, they eat, like, a ton of lettuce 'cause it expands in your stomach. Oh. Like, lettuce will kill rabbits, and I didn't, we didn't know that until we won a rabbit at the fair when I was in, elementary school, and- No trauma unlocked thought it was, you know, like, you just think it's, like, rabbit food. Like Right. Literally. And no, it will kill them. It expands their stomachs. Oh. So when they're training for these food competitions, a lot of them will eat lettuce and water, like, to expand their stomachs. Okay. I want, I want my stomach shrunk. Like, I don't want Right. And I want... If I'm gonna expand it, I'm gonna expand it with Texas Roadhouse rolls. Some cheese fries. That's crazy. No. Yeah. No. So that's gross. So okay, we're recording this on Mm-hmm. July 5th. So they had the hot dog eating contest yesterday. The same dude's won for, like, 18 years in a row, which I don't care, this is Jackson fact. That's a long time. Yeah. That's, so did he start this... okay, so a- anyway, I don't wanna go down that rabbit hole, but that's gross. And since it is July 5, happy 250th birthday, America. Yes. That's awesome. Yes. So awesome that as we were leaving Panama City yesterday morning at 5:00 or 6:00 AM, there was already fireworks going off. Oh, wow. And I couldn't see them, but you could hear them. Yeah. Whoo. And I'm like, "Oh." Do your dogs do okay? They did okay, yeah. We've had, we used to have a, our other boxer did not. Mm-hmm. But I was prepared to give them Benadryl. Yeah. And they didn't need it, they were fine. Okay. How about your guys? Um, Rex, as long as I have a TV on loud- Yeah or, like, some kind of oth- other sound- Good he's fine. Good But if it was, like, quiet and he- Yeah um, he, like, crawls underneath the desk- Yeah or crawls underneath something. Clifford- Of course, of course did you see my video? No. Clifford, I brought them both upstairs at, to Dylan's room. And Clifford just decided that- To do Clifford things? Like, lay on my face. Like, I just- Was he protecting you? And he was just, freaking out, and then- Aw and- Aw, bless him you can tell though, like with him panting like that, that's a sign that they're stressed Stressed, yeah. So he, he, he was over my neck, and then he was like trying to get into my sweatshirt. Can I tell you I hate fireworks. Like, I think they're beautiful, don't get me wrong. But like the animals, and then when they fall into the water and the fish eat them. Such a waste of money. Agreed. It literally goes boom and then- Does your neighborhood like do something together? They used to. My friend Courtney and her husband moved out of the neighborhood, but they always did like the big display and everybody would contribute. Yeah. And it would be a big neighborhood- There's a lot of money that people contribute for that stuff. Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of dollars. You're like, "Yeah, I know that." Mm. I don't get it either. They're beautiful, I guess. I could care less. Like, I legit could care less. I did not see a firework last night. Actually, I did put something on my Facebook post like, "I don't wanna see 20 reels of fireworks on everybody's page." No, we all, yeah, we can all hear them. Please. What is so annoying was, I mean, and you know, it's Fourth of July. Yeah. Like, you really expect it. All the fireworks went off before like 10:30. Yeah. And you think, "Oh, cool," like- We're done. Yeah got Clifford in his crate 'cause Dylan was out. He went out with Ruthie. They went to a party. Mm-hmm. And so it was me and Rex down here, and I was doing some stuff on the computer, and then all of a sudden at like 11:30 it just started again. And I was like, "No." Yeah. The other thing is too is that they go all week. Like, it's not just, "Okay, we'll wait till the Fourth of July, and then we'll do it and then we're done." They start early. Mm-hmm. And I think it's worse because we live out in the country. And I'm terrified that they're gonna fall on a house. Again, with the animals, it scares the horses. We're on the same page. Yeah. But anyway, people are gonna still gonna do them. Mm-hmm. Yeah. They don't care what we think. Anyway. No. But happy birthday, America. Yeah. I don't watch soccer, so. Yes. let me tell you what will make me watch soccer is- Uh-huh the- Yeah. Did you see the goalkeeper for, Nigeria? Girl. My God. There's some, there's some attractive athletes out there. What kills me, a lot of these countries, their men are very well-groomed. Oh, yes, they are. Like, there's some cultures that it's more of a thing. Like they never... they're playing these games that are 90 minutes in Texas or whatever, and their hair does not move. I mean, they're pouring sweat. You're like, "I know." And they change their shirts like three and four times. You, do you keep pausing that part? I just don't get- I, I see the clips. Yeah. Like I don't actually watch the games. I just look at the men. Again, I would never be able to be a female ref because I would be like... Yeah, just so distracted. Your awkwardness would be just like- Oh, on a, on a whole new level. Like I would, the game would be over here and I'd just be like back here with the goalkeeper like- Yeah "So what are you doing?" So what's, so what's up? How you doing? So yeah. So there's been some, some really cool things, happening. Just a quick update. One of them was the smallest country in the world I think almost beat, Argentina, which is like the world favorite. That's where Messi plays. You probably heard his name. No? I don't, I don't know. Okay, okay, okay. So- I just know- That was- the fine specimen from- from Nigeria. And he is a goalkeeper. So if you're listening, Mr. Nigerian Goalkeeper. I'm on Facebook watching. Yeah. But the smallest country in the world that has, like, 500,000 people- Mm-hmm and now this goalkeeper's done... Not your goalkeeper, but this one for, and I can't remember, it's, it's Cape Verde I think is the name of the country. It's right off of Africa. But he's got more people following him on socials than they have in their country. It's, like, 22 million follow him now. He's, he did great. Mm-hmm. Um, anyway, but do you remember Freddy from Germany? Mm-hmm. Okay, so just some quick Freddy updates. So Germany was eliminated, so they're not playing anymore, but he had already planned to stay till the end of July. So he's still here just roaming the country. He's, he's just free-willing out there. Hey. He has been invited to the White House. Don't know if that's happened yet. He did take his X down. He was getting some haters, so- Aw he's documenting everything on Instagram, but, yeah, he's still here living his best life and, if you wanna follow him, you can see him on Instagram. So I think, yeah- Oh he's had a good time. Oh, that's sad, though, that he got bullied off of it. I know. Well, people are like, "Is this just a plant? Is this just- Oh somebody trying to whatever?" Yeah. Conspiracy stuff. Uh-huh. Well, do you follow the White House on, social media? Do you follow the White House on, TikTok or Instagram or anything? No, but I probably should. Well, they are doing all these, compiled videos of all these, really cool reactions to America and it's, like, the world's healing. Mm-hmm. And it's such a cool, like- I'm loving it. Yeah. I am loving it. But I love that the White House is showing- Mm-hmm all of this camaraderie. Did you see, talking about the 250th and, the healing and stuff, all the different countries that did stuff to celebrate the US? So France lit up the Eiffel Tower and that said, like, USA on it. Germany had a display with our colors and all the things. Yeah. So I think this has really been good- Yeah to let people see the media's not always telling you the truth. Yeah. Now, maybe that's just what my feed is. I'm sure there's a feed of haters somewhere, too. I'm sure. But I like my feed. Me too. Just give me the puppies and, food recipes and- And the Nigerian goalkeeper. Yeah. Mm. I have to look him up. He's so fucking hot. I said it to Jazz. I was like, "I will start watching soccer if-" Yay, Nigeria. Are they still in it, do you know? No, goodbye. I, no. There is a dude from Norway that's really funny. I'm sure you've seen memes on him. You will, if you've not, 'cause we're speaking about it, it'll be in your algorithm now, but I forgot his name and I probably couldn't say it correctly anyway because of all of the A's in it. But he's, like, 6'4" and 250, which that's really big for a soccer player, and he has blonde hair and it's shaved underneath. But he is just vicious, yet goofy. Oh. Like he, they show a clip of him, like eating and his mouth is full, and there's a mirror beside him, and he looks around, he looks, and he like scares himself. And then the way he runs, he looks like, like he's the kid from How to Train Your Dragon and stuff. And they're like, "Where did he park his dragon?" All right, so just a little light-hearted thing. Okay. There was a mother beluga whale that was in captivity. Did you see this? Uh-uh. And she escaped, like she jumps over the wall where she- Like Free Willy style? Yeah. Like, they have a picture of it. And because her baby was out, like in the ocean, so she traveled several hundred miles to go find her baby, and they had the tracker on her so they could see where she was going. And she got her baby. Mm-hmm. But is that not the sweetest thing ever? It's like that superhuman mama strength. I love that. So yeah, a mother beluga whale escaped a research facility and traveled hundreds of miles across the ocean to reunite with her baby. I love that. Me too. I have a feel-good story. Okay. Now this actually happened in 2024, so I don't think we've talked about this before, though. Okay. Um, did you hear about the woman who she said Kanye West told her to steal a baby and steal a car? No. Was it true, though? Like Yeah, so, um, police were called to Dollar General- Uh-huh in Kentucky saying that a woman was trying to get in the parking lot... Uh, I'm sorry, the woman was trying to get into cars, and she got into one, and there was a baby in there. The child was not harmed, just to let everybody know. Um, but when detectives asked her, like, "What, what's up? Why'd you do that?" She said, "Kanye West speaks to me telegraphically and told me to steal the vehicle." Most believe she meant telepathically. Okay. But she was arrested and charged with kidnapping and theft, but, like, Kanye speaks to her. Well, she had to be on something. Oh, I'm sure. Well, okay, here's another feel-good story. So it's it says, "Woman slips husband a laxative and Gorilla Glues his butt cheeks together- after catching him cheating." I love her. She- I love her is, yeah. She is. She is. Yes. Oh, and then I was scrolling on Instagram, and there's this little old lady. I hope I'm this woman when I am older. She got kicked out of a nursing home for throwing too many parties at night and, and s- serving alcohol to her fellow- That is you. She got kicked out? She got, she got a... She was reading her warning notice, and she says, "These people can't tell me what to do." And then, like, a week later she gets another letter, and she, she had,, a 30-day notice that she was getting kicked out. I bet. And then all of her, her shirts, says, like, uh, "Keep your eyes up here." Oh. To her. That's cute. That's cute. She's adorable. She's, like, the cutest lady, and I'm like, "I pray I am, this funny and this cool when I'm that old." I'm probably not, 'cause I'm not that cool now, but- We'll grow into it. We'll both grow into it. We'll be so cool when we're older. Oh my gosh,. Well, you know, like, nursing homes are, like, the number one place for STDs to get spread. I know. That's gross. I, I'm, I'm not ready for this life. We're not there. We're not in nursing homes or care facilities. I'm sorry. I don't know the politically correct way to say that, but- Yeah, politically correct person. She's got a ton of followers. Yeah, I'm sure she does. Yeah, she's adorable. There's another, grandmother I like. Her and her son are all on socials, and he, like, gets her to do crazy stuff and she's- Oh, see, yeah, yeah I think his name is Ross, and they've gotten to where they're pretty big and, like, they'll go on the red carpet and she'll be standing next to somebody famous, and she'll say something off the wall like he'll have told her. It's great. Yeah. I love them. That's not the, the one that, the, he gets his grandmother high, is it? Uh, you know, maybe. It might be the same person. Never seen, never seen that happen. Oh. But, I mean- The one guy that I'm thinking of puts, like, his grandmother in, um, like, the tents and then hotboxes her No. Oh, no, no, no. No, that's not- She- but she, like, she's all for it. She's- Yeah you know? Yeah. I mean, you can tell she's a pothead. Yeah. Back in the- Yeah '60s. Yeah. She went to the original Woodstock. Yes. No. I, I haven't seen her, but I think that's great when they're loving life. Yeah. I love that. I do, too. I wanna be that cool when I am old. The way my ankles and knees feel now, though, I have just some s- don't know. My recovery time- Oh, yeah is not what it used to be. But she's, I mean, she's going for it. I'm proud of her. Well, I guess, like, when you don't have to get up in the morning- I guess like, you can just, like, sleep- Yeah it off. We cannot do a pod that we're dropping in a couple days without mentioning Taylor and Travis. Oh, yeah. They got married. Mm-hmm. We don't really know details yet. Mm-mm. But they're married. Mm-hmm. The end. They donated a lot of money to charity. They did. Yeah. 26 million, I think, to different charities. Sounds good. But- That's cool it is. And something about they're married in Madison Square Garden, which, what is that? Is that the place where they play basketball? Mm. Or is that, like, a whole block of an area? Do you know? No, it's, like, a big building. Like, they have, like, concerts there. They've got the basketball. They've got- Okay that's where they had the big Trump, rally. Okay. Um, but yeah, they have, like, all different events there. Okay. But it's like- Not somewhere that you would think- I guess you can rent it out if you got the right- Yeah price. I s- but even still, like, you just wouldn't... I guess they had so many people- Yeah that- Yeah they needed a ginormous place. Venue. That is not a wedding I would have done, just to let you know. Could you- They asked could you imagine? They asked, and I was like, I will be on vacation." The vibe I get is, like, she's... I mean, I, I can't see her being, like, super mean. No. But- Or him either. I just feel like that's just there's so many people. Yeah, no. And so many people that are used to getting exactly what they want. Mm-hmm. Um, anyway, they're married. Congrats, guys. Thanks, thanks for the invite. Yeah. Sorry I was out of town, couldn't make it. Do you wanna do am I the a-hole? Yeah. I'm sorry. We just get talking and, like, go in other directions, and here we are all ready to get some for this. Yes. That's what we're for. You're welcome. That's what we're known for. The podcast about literally nothing. Yeah. Okay. Am I the a-hole for not allowing a woman to recline her seat all the way back into my son's lap on the coach? This happened 20 minutes ago. We're currently riding the bus to another province for my son's 15-year-old heart surgery. Well, that started out with a bang. There's a very, in my opinion, entitled woman who's moved from her original seat across the aisle from us to the two seats directly in front of us. We had just returned to our seats after stepping off at a transfer station, where I got my son a drink and some snacks, when she made her switch. After getting settled back in and the bus takes off, the seat in front of my son suddenly snaps back. I was digging around in my bag at the time looking for my charger, so I didn't notice straight away. But my son tapped me rapidly on the arm, and when I looked back at him, he just kept looking between the reclined seat with the lounging woman in his lap back to me, almost in a comical succession. My son's a tall kid, and the space available in these cramped travel buses are already limited. This obviously would not fly. I reached between the seats in front of us and gently tapped her on the shoulder. Once she turned around to look at me, I smiled politely and I said, "I'm sorry, but you can't lean all the way back like that." I pointed to my son. I said, "He's too tall." She sat up quickly by a fraction and interrupted me saying, "I have back pain." I replied, "I understand that, but you're lying in his lap. You have to put it back up." My son, being the martyr, interjected, "You can lean back, but just not so far." And the woman, who seemed to believe that her back problems make her somehow above us mere mortals who share the same general ticket space with her, raised her voice and shot back with, "I can't sit straight up like this." She hunched her shoulders and neck forward, being very dramatic. "I have back pain." At this point, people were looking, and my son is looking really uncomfortable. Mm-hmm. I could see he was about to just let her stay there, and nope, not on my watch, 'cause this is silly and unreasonable behavior from a grown woman using a mode of transportation she chose to use. I told her that I understood she had back problems, but her headrest is pressing against my son's chest- Oh, boy and the space is too small for that. They shouldn't even be able to go back that far. No. It- No, that's t- that's too much She suggested my son come sit next to her so she can lean back, and I quickly said, "No. You're a stranger who clearly doesn't respect personal space, and there's already seven people on this bus hacking their brains out." For context on this, my son is sitting in a seat wearing a face mask because he cannot afford to catch anything so close to surgery. Trying to keep him, quote, "healthy" the past three weeks has been really difficult. I'm not risking it. Okay. Don't blame you, girl. Mm-mm. Even if he wasn't sick. Okay, um, um- Well, he really should. Yeah. She rolled her eyes, huffed like a scorned teenager, and yanked her seat back into an upright position. I swear she would have stomped her foot if she could. She's been sighing heavily, moving around pointedly in her seat from side to side, and crossing her arms ever since. I told my son not to worry about it. I can emphasize with her back pain, especially when these spaces are so cramped. That's not my problem. This is a public bus, maybe not the best transportation for everyone. So anyway, am I the a-hole for not letting her recline her seat into my son's lap because of pain? No. Letting him move his seat is non-negotiable. No. That is crazy. No, not at all. Not at all. No. Mm-mm. I don't like it on a plane or anything when you can do that. I wanna lean my seat back, but I feel like... And I don't like it when people do that on me. Yeah. And especially when you have, like, the, the little tray down. Right. 'Cause I always prop up my phone Yeah to watch whatever I'm watching. Yeah. Or my, whatever I have, my iPad or whatever. Yeah. But yeah, I, mm-mm. No, you're not the a-hole lady. No. You are not the a-hole. How could anybody think, would think that that's okay? Could you- Right like, it would be so weird though, right? 'Cause, like, you're laying back and, like, you're literally looking- Right in the person's face. Like, you're looking up into a person's face. Can you just massage my head- Yeah while I'm right here? Weird. I don't know. Why would you even wanna do that? And maybe I'm- Then, okay, so why does she move? Like, if you were sitting in a different spot with a better choice I don't know May- okay, so maybe what could have happened, I mean, and I'm not saying that any, that they should have- I love all the makeup stories I know. Is that they switch spots, like put the mom and the son in front of her and put her behind them. Maybe that would've- But, I mean, she's just gonna do it to the next person Not my problem. I, uh, the whole thing's just weird to me It is really weird. It is really weird. Most people are saying, yeah, Wait. What? Okay, listen to this. OP is the one being unreasonable. Multiple solutions were given, and she refused all of them. That's what unreasonable, when you won't compromise. Obviously, the lady is immature, but she was at least trying to offer solutions, where OP thought she had... it had to be her way or the highway. Well, I think it's just common decency. Like, I would d- Yeah I, I am stubborn, though. I'm very stubborn in that type of situation. Yeah. And I'd be like, "No, just put your seat up." Right. And it's not like they said that she couldn't have it back at all. It's just don't have your seat touching- Right this kid's chest. Like- Yeah, that's not a huge ask I don't think that that's unreasonable. No, no. Somebody else said what we said. Can we just stop reclining chairs in buses and planes all together? It's just rude. You know what else I hate? When you're, like, sitting in church, which I know, I don't go as much as I should. Anyway, that started off with a bang. You're sitting there or, okay, so anywhere. Yeah. Let's just say that. It just happened, like, I can vividly remember this happened in church. You're sitting there, and the person in front of you has really long, gorgeous hair, which is fine. Whatever. And they put it over. Not just... And it's like you're invading my knee space. I can't stand that. Mm-hmm. I understand that you don't wanna, have it behind you and, moving your head and stuff. Not my problem. Yeah. I have had a kid on a plane, pull my hair. It wasn't, over, I mean, he just- Yeah reached around and, but it was, like, a 10-year-old and like- Grabbed a handful? Yeah. Grabbed a handful might have been the wrong word- Yeah exactly, but he just grabbed your hair and decided it needed a little... Oh, yeah, tugs. I was like, "What the?" Oh. The mom's like, "Ah, I'm so sorry!" I'm like- Yeah "It's okay." Yeah just I put my hair up in, like, a, a bun. Yeah. Yeah, just don't let it happen again. Oh my gosh But yeah, so no, you're not the a-hole, and, um, anybody that thinks you are is bananas because I would have been much more aggressive about telling the lady Yeah to back off. I mean, if she's, she's in your space, if, like, okay, so if my space bubble is only like, say like... My space bubble. Okay, I'm stopping. Personal- Yeah personal space bubble. What is it, Dirty Dancing? Like- Yeah. Oh, by the way, we should do the Dirty Dancing Festival. When is it? It's in, I think, September. September? Like, Lore? Uh, um, I think they stopped it at Lake Lore. Well, maybe they didn't. I- I know at one point they were stopping it at Lake Lore. I don't know if they were doing like renovations or something. Mm-hmm. But I got a thing on Instagram for it, like a ad. Yeah. It's so much fun. That does sound like fun. I'll go. Are you gonna do the dance? Oh, yeah. I just did the shimmy. I love that dance at the end Finally found someone, yeah. Watching that last scene comes to mind, I can picture some of the dance moves for it, and I'm like, "Oh, I did that." We went and saw the Michael movie. I don't know if I told you. It was really, really good. Yeah. But like, in the videos and stuff, I was like doing the- Stayin' alive. Yeah, that one. And then the, the beat it, whatever. Yeah. Brian was like, "What are you doing?" I was like, "I, I know this one." See, that would be like if NSYNC did it. Do the Yeah. Oh my gosh. It was great. It was great. We're gonna do our book review. So for our non-bookies, just a heads up, next week is going to be a documentary review. Yep. It will be a maybe mini episode. We'll see. We're not very good at the minis. Might be a full episode. We shall see. Yeah. It's called Maternal Instinct, and it's a Netflix documentary, and it looks riveting. Yes. So if you are not a bookie, you can leave. Bye. Yep, bye. Okay. hey, bookies. I don't think we told them what we were reading. I don't think so either, so guess what? Surprise. We did a book. We did a book. By Alex Finlay. Called The Night Shift. Yes. So I've read other books by this author- Mm-hmm and I liked them a lot. So this book just came out this year. Yeah. Recently. Yeah. 'Cause there was a wait on it. I thought it was really good. It is a good book. It is a good book. Go ahead and read this blurb, and then when we talk about our book next week, we need to read the blurb this week for what it is next week, so they can decide if they wanna read it. All right, it's New Year's Eve, 1999. Y2K is expected to end in chaos. Planes falling from the sky, elevators plunging to earth, world markets collapsing, a digital apocalypse. None of these things happened, but at a Blockbuster Video in London, New Jersey, four teenage girls working the night shift are attacked. Only one survives. Police quickly identify a suspect, who flees and is never seen again. 15 years later, in the same town, four teenage employees working late at an ice cream store are attacked, and again, only one makes it out alive. In the aftermath, three lives intersect. The survivor of the Blockbuster massacre, who's forced to relive the tragedy, the brother of the original suspect, who's convinced the police have it wrong, and an FBI agent who's determined to solve both cases. On a collision course toward the truth, all three lives will forever be changed, and not everyone will make it out alive. Yeah. So you had two timelines. Yes. Okay, obviously spoilers, so- Right if you are gonna read it and you don't want spoilers, you can leave. But if you don't mind spoilers and you wanna read it, stay tuned. Yeah. So we had two timelines. Yes. Very clearly defined. Yeah. Easy to follow. You know, I get lost in those, but I was with it. Good. And the nostalgia of Blockbuster. Oh my gosh. Can I just be kind and realize? Yeah. What did you think going into it? That's a very broad question. Okay. Were you pleasantly surprised? Um, yes. So I had my suspicions- Okay and I was 100% wrong. Sounds like, yeah. okay. So in 1999, four teenagers are working overnight at Blockbuster. Mm-hmm. Three employees are brutally murdered. There was one survivor, Ella Monroe. A local teen, Vince, it's Chris' brother Wait, pause. Yeah Their names are Chris and Vince. Those names don't go together for siblings. Just to, just to throw my, my two cents out there. Okay, go back. Okay. Okay. Like, they should be like Chris and Thomas or Chris and Mark, and I don't know what name goes with Vince. Tony. Or Paulie. God. Paulie. Yeah. Jersey Shore. Yes. Vinnie and Paulie. Tabs here. We have the brothers. that doesn't make sense- Vince, is blamed, and Vince disappears. 15 years later, Another overnight business is attacked 15 years later, this time it's an ice cream store. Several employees are murdered, one young woman survives. There's a lot of similarities between the two. So we have our main characters, which is Ella, she's the sole survivor. Chris was Vince's younger brother. Sarah is the FBI agent, um, that's investigating both cases, and then Atticus is a public defender who's also involved. Mm-hmm. Okay. The other characters that we have come into play are- Mm-hmm the guidance counselor from the school, or is it the principal? Was it the principal or guidance counselor? I think there's one of each. Okay. So like you're getting like these interviews because of the similarities- Mm-hmm they're interviewing other friends at the schools. They're interviewing all these people. And they're also interviewing people from the past. Yeah. So the parents of the That was another thing that got me. So they're interviewing the parents of the, murders from 1999, and all of these dads are not wanting to talk about it and very upset and very, just standoffish about the whole thing. The first survivor, Ella- Uh-huh Super rich Yeah oodles of money. Oodles. And the only reason she had a job was because her dad wanted her to learn the, the value of the dollar. She had lost her brother to drugs, and the dad was like, "The drugs are because of the money. You're not gonna be that way, so get a job," so she works at Blockbuster. Right. Right. Um, so she's working there, and she survives, um, I guess he just thought that she was dead, huh? Mm-hmm. And, she's obviously got all kinds of trauma. She ends up being a counselor. Right. And that's how she is introduced to the one survivor from the current murders because she's helping her with, with that. Right, but she is, not living the lavish life. No. No, she is not. She is, scraping together money- and she's going out to the bars- Yeah to get laid. Yes, very much so. And she's engaged, right? Yeah. She's got problems because of her- Yes trauma from the past. Unresolved trauma, so, so yeah, she is... She's driving her beat up Toyota and yeah, just making do with- And her mom is horrible. Her mom was crazy. Her mom was awful, so Ella takes the other survivor home with her. Mm-hmm. Um, and the girl's like, "Oh, my God, you're living the, the, the life, man," and Ella's like, "No, I... This is not my life- Yeah this is my mom's life." She's like, "You're rich." She's like, "No, I'm not rich. My mom is rich." Yeah. Yeah. But you can just tell that the whole dynamic between mom and daughter is- Mm-hmm horrible. Mm-hmm. Um, and the other girl, the other survivor is a, foster kid. Yes. So she really was, like, eyes wide open, seeing all of the things. Mm-hmm. The, the... Ella's mother was like, "What do you want to eat? You can have anything." Mm-hmm. And they're like, "A hamburger." She's like, "Okay, I'm gonna get you a Wagyu hamburger." Yeah. So you see, these dynamics, building. Yeah. Then the survivor- jesse? Yes. She then gets accused of being the killer. Yeah. They felt she staged it- Mm-hmm I guess, for attention. Mm-hmm. But yeah, the- But she didn't actually work there. She went there to go confront- Yeah, so it comes out that she had lied to the cops on her initial interview. She was going to confront one of them who was mad at her or whatever, and she just... It was like happenstance that she was there. Right. So going through all the things, they're trying to, prove that Jesse is innocent- Mm-hmm and trying to f- find out if Vince is alive. Right. Um, and we find out that Vince is no longer with us. Right. He's buried in Ella's family's backyard. 'Cause all of the fathers- Mm-hmm who thought that he was guilty- Yep killed him. Vigilante justice. Yes. Thank you. They took matters into their own hand, which is why they didn't wanna be interviewed. They didn't wanna talk about it. They just think that it's because they're, They didn't want anything dug back up, but- Right. Lit- not literally. Yeah. But literally. But yeah. So they, so yeah, they did that. But then we also find out that Ella's dad committed suicide- Yes uh, because of the guilt of killing this kid. Yeah. And she had thought this whole time that her dad had done that because her brother's death had, like, weighed on him. And I'm sure that did too, but it was- She thought that, that her experience in this trauma was the catalyst that, like, it was the straw that broke- Yeah the camel's back. Yeah. Now, Ella and Vince were dating. Mm-hmm. And we don't find that out till, like- Right 12. I did not see that coming. Yeah. So that's an extra layer. Layer. She's the whole time, like, "He didn't do this. He didn't do this," and the brother saying, "He was at home with me. He didn't do this. There's no way," and- Mm-hmm then you find out that he didn't do it. Right. He was, like, head over heels in love with, with Ella, and- Yep. Yep truly was at home with the brother. Yeah. So then we find out that one of the girls in '99 was pregnant. Yes. And- Wait, which one was pregnant? And who was she pregnant by? Why don't I remember all this? Pregnant by the killer Yes. It's like I just learned it all over again. Yes. Which was very bad, very bad, because the killer was not the same age as her. Mm-mm. We find out that one of the girls in the ice cream shop was also dating a very older man. Mm-hmm. And so then you're putting the pieces together, um, of how this all- Yeah happened. Yeah. So then we find out Ella's mentor is the murderer. Isn't that crazy? I did not see that coming. I did not see that coming either 'cause he was such a... He was just, that's what it's about, you know? That's what I'm like, "Why get Ella involved in it again?" Yeah, 'cause he's the one that called her to come out there. Yeah. I don't know. That's so weird. That was asking to get caught. Maybe he wanted to get caught, you know? Sometimes they say that bad people wanna get caught because they... I don't know. So he was a creep. He was a high school counselor, and he was involved with these two girls that 20, uh, what, 20 years apart whatsoever. Yeah, yeah. And,, he really pushed the narrative that Vince was the killer the first time around- Mm-hmm obviously 'cause- Mm-hmm you know, all the fingers pointed at him Trying to shine the light on somebody else. Mm-hmm. Right? They're trying to figure out what the connection could be between these murders. Mm-hmm. And that was the only connection- Mm-hmm was he did driving lessons at one school. That was the only connection that they could find was this guy. Yeah, yeah. And they put all the pieces together. So o- one of the craziest parts to me was when we found out Jesse's mom- Mm-hmm which she was The killer's biological daughter Mind blown out about Jesse's mom. Yes. And Jesse's mom was Katie, who was one of the ones originally killed, She had given birth to Jesse- Mm-hmm before and given her up for adoption. Right. That's why Jesse was in the foster system. And baby daddy is the killer. Dun-dun. Crazy twisted. Yeah. Crazy twisted. Mm-hmm. But I like how they kind of did go together. Mm-hmm. Like, there was the connection there between- Everybody between Jesse and the groups of people, yeah. Let's talk about the ending for a second. Okay. There's a final showdown. You think some people die- Mm-hmm and some people do die- Mm but not everybody dies. Right. And we get a little connection with Ella and Chris. I did not see that coming either. I didn't either. Mm-mm. I liked that though. I don't know, kind of creeped me out. Did it? It did. Because Vince? Yeah. Yeah. I get that. I get that. But, you know, you kind of want them to both be happy, and maybe she'll stop ho-ing around. She's in her ho phase. Maybe it'll be good for them both, who knows? But, um, but yeah, that was I like the epilogues. I like when there's an epilogue. Mm-hmm. So, yeah. Yeah. Okay. That was good. What's our next book? Our next book is called The Island Club by Nicola Harrison. And, I've actually already read this. I'm gonna read it again, 'cause I found it really entertaining. Kind of gave me a little bit of a vibe like, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Okay. Not, 100%, but, it takes place a long time ago, and there's a lot going on with history stuff and- Oh, this is like right in your time relationships. 100%. Yeah. You wanna read the blurb? Sure. 1956 on idyllic Bulba Island. Just off the California coast, life seems peaceful and welcoming. But when the lives of three women begin to unravel in shockingly different ways, an unlikely friendship and the game of tennis may be the only thing that can save them. Millie Kincaid's plan to fix her crumbling marriage seems to be falling apart before it even begins. She believed that moving her young family from Hollywood to Bulba Island might entice her increasingly distant husband to come home earlier after work. Yeah, good luck with that. Instead, he's barely coming home at all. Society matriarch Sylvia Johnson and her husband have been pillars of their community for decades, and have just recently begun a new business venture, the Island Club, a place for members to swim, play tennis, dine in style. But when she learns that he has been risking their financial security and putting their family's future in grave danger, she's not only poised to lose the club, but the entire community she holds dear. Meanwhile, standoffish loner Adele Lambert, entire world is on the brink of being destroyed if the dark secrets of her past and hidden identity is real. 20 years ago, she ran from a shameful scandal and left behind the only thing she ever loved. Now terrified that her secret identity- Secret she spent decades guarding will be exposed. But desperate to stay afloat, she risks everything to return to the game that brought her to her knees all those years before. Okay. It's a good book. Okay. So this is, a palette cleanse, 1956. A lot of stay-at-home little woman vibes, a lot of women not wanting to be stay-at-home little women vibes, a lot of them wanting it. It, it's very, very good. Mm-hmm. I liked it. I hope you do, too. Good. Yep. I hope our bookies do. Um, all right, well, thank you guys for joining us today. That was super formal, and I don't know where that came from. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen- Thanks for being here with us. No, thanks, y'all. We really love you, and leave us a review and follow us and do all the things. Yes. Love you. Love you, bye. Bye.
