SPEAKER_01We are a mom and daughter duo who's been through trying and challenging preteen and teen years, identity issues, fear, guilt, shame, not knowing who we are or whose we are, but God. We now have a godly, strong, healthy mother and daughter relationship. So this is the Inside Scoop with Mom and Me. Hey y'all, welcome back. We are so excited to be back, y'all.
SPEAKER_00Yes, we are. We are going to talk about what's holding you back. Yes, y'all. But before we get started, let's kick it off with gratitude. Mom, you want to go first? Absolutely. I am just grateful for another day. I'm grateful for all God is doing. You know, I stand and remain in gratitude.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Oh my gosh. Yes, me too. Um, I'm just really grateful for all the things that he has done and all that he will continuously do. Amen.
SPEAKER_00Amen. You know, let's kick this off. Yes. Y'all, we were thinking when we talked about what is our next episode going to be about.
SPEAKER_01And yeah, y'all, like it wasn't, you know, when we were thinking about our next episode, it wasn't easy, you know? Because we're kind of like, okay, what what are we struggle with a lot? You know what I mean? What are we thinking about? What's on our minds? You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and we wanted to touch it from a different angle as well. Exactly. Um, it's like, what are women? Women, just in general. What do we struggle with the last? Right. Like, and we only come back and it always circles back to do we belong? Yeah, definitely. Do we belong in the room? Yes, we do. But we always saying, you know, what if someone thinks a certain way about me? We care about, you know, will I be judged for those things?
SPEAKER_01Will I fit in? Right. Yeah, it's like the whole thing. I feel like women just in general, we're just so wired to think about and be about so many different things, and we try to have our hands in so many different places. And yeah, but yeah, we just wanted to do an episode that's just like, okay, ties together. There's like, okay, women.
SPEAKER_00Women. And what's holding us back? You know, and so we came to the conclusion that sometimes what happens is fear. Right? We're fearful of who's gonna be judging us. Do we belong in the room? Fear of uh, you know, who are we? You know, fear of, you know, I'm gonna make a mistake. Yeah. Um, fear of, am I qualified? Fear of, you know, oh my gosh. So when we think about fear, and then we think about bringing faith, right? Faith and fear doesn't go together. They don't. Nope. No. They can't go, you know, cannot go together. So what I mean by that is when you go to pray, you can say, Dear God, I just thank you that I'm prospering in all my ways. Thank you, God, that I am at the right opportunity. The opportunity is presenting itself to me. I'm walking in it, and I'm expecting to be in that job. Right. Amen.
SPEAKER_01And then but then in the next breath, then you'd be like, oh, well, how am I gonna pay this bill? Oh my god, I don't even know where the money's gonna come from. Oh my god, but what if I don't need to get this job? So am I qualified? Am I qualified? Am I capable? Am I deserving of this? Oh my gosh, like can I do this? Oh no, and then you already back in doubt.
SPEAKER_00You're back in fear. You're back in fear. So then how can faith operate? You can't, it can't, right? So we have to, you know, as we talk about this and how we kind of always bring it back to the forefront, because fear does keep us stuck. It does, you know, and we see it in our everyday life, we see it in other people, and and that is what our goal is and the journey that we're on too. That yes, sometimes every most days we're like, oh, we are in faith. But then that fear or that doubt will creep back in, right?
SPEAKER_01So And you know what's funny too that you brought it in? Like you said, yeah, like we're afraid of just like even just taking chances, you know what I mean? Because also, too, if we think about fear too, it's kind of like we're afraid to even take get outside of our comfort zone because it's not comfortable, or we're stretching ourselves in different ways too, that it's like, oh my god, this is for so I don't even want to do it because it's so different, you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Because you know why what I think, um, no, not what I think, what I do know, um, is that we like familiarity. Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00Right. So if it's familiar to us, we don't have to guess. No. We already know what we get. Exactly. Right? So when you think about it, like when we want to be, you know, at another job, or we want to be, you know, saying, okay, you know, I I deserve to be at that job. You find something on the on LinkedIn, wherever you find in the job. You look at the job description, you're like, oh man, I know I can do that. This is my promotion, right? Or, oh my God, look, I fit right into it, right? But then you go to apply, then you go and say, Well, you know, I'm already comfortable at my job, so I don't even know why I would want to move. Because, you know, I could go in there, my manager, this new manager, I may not get along with them. That's true. What about the benefits? You know, oh no. No, that's so true. You know what I'm saying? Because then now, guess what you done done? You stuck to familiar territory, so you will not be able to grow to become the best you. That's facts. Because you're afraid, you're scared to take a chance.
SPEAKER_01Take a risk. I mean, and also too, it's okay to just take the risk, take the chance. And sometimes I also think that we can be afraid of success and what that looks like and what it even feels like. Because sometimes I feel like our mind can't even comprehend what success looks like because we haven't ever had it. So can we obtain it? Can you? Yes. Obviously, yes, we can, but sometimes I think we get so stuck in that limited mindset where it's just like, oh, well, I'm here, so I'm just gonna stay here. But it's like, no, like our brain, like dreaming, being creative, like all that things is such a blessing, and you know, and we can obtain anything that we put our mind to.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, God wants us to be successful, right? Exactly. Because how are you going to be a witness to someone, right? They they when you go to witness or you go to look at people, we're winning those souls, we're trying to bring those, we are ambassadors for Jesus Christ, and when they see you, they want to see different. Exactly. Right? Yeah, and yeah, like, yeah, keep going, sorry. No, no, no. Because I think that with different, and we kind of sometimes be like, okay, well, you have to meet people where they're at. For sure. For sure. But they want to see, like, wow, her living like this or her living like that. Wow, I want to. Who is this God that they serve? Right.
SPEAKER_01Exactly.
SPEAKER_00So you know what I'm saying? So when people see you, you meet them where they are, but they also want to see the fruit. Right.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yes.
SPEAKER_00They want to see the fruit because lip service is one thing. Ooh. Right? But actions and and and and going through it is a whole nother. And what do they say?
SPEAKER_01What's that saying? Actions speak louder than words. Absolutely. One thing. Well, I like the person. It's lipstick. Because you could be all talk, but what is the fruit? What is the example? Right. Because people like to see stories in real life. They love stories. They do. They love the, you know, the story where it's like, okay, the come-up story.
SPEAKER_00The come up, right? So why are we afraid of that growth? I don't know. Because, you know, we have it. We operate when we belongs to us. It belongs. It's our inheritance.
SPEAKER_01What does that verse say? Um, he prepared the table before me in the presence of my enemies. What is that table though?
SPEAKER_00Prosperity, yeah, peace, yeah, joy. Thank God.
SPEAKER_01All the many blessings bestowed upon us are right in front of us. So all we gotta do is what? Partake. Partake. So it belongs to us.
SPEAKER_00Eat. Eat. And the enemies and those ones that are behind us, they can just look. That's it. Right? That's it. So that is why I think. No, no, no. But I do believe that that's why sometimes, you know, we are afraid of success because we don't know if we deserve it.
SPEAKER_01That and also, too, I think for me too. Sorry. Um, I think also, too, we're afraid to be um seen. Because I think sometimes we we're all well, me personally, I'm very used to being in the background. I don't want to rock the boat. Yeah, I don't want to be put in different situations because what if I mess up and then the attention is on me and then it's higher stakes. Yeah. So I think that's also another reason of okay, what's holding us back? I don't even want to be seen. Because then you're put under a microscope to be, oh my God, then what if I make a mistake? Then it's like a big deal. Oh my gosh, I don't even want to, oh no, I don't even want. So then you don't even want to apply yourself or try because then you don't even want it, the elevation to be seen. And then if you make a mess mistake, then it's like, oh my gosh, it's a big deal.
SPEAKER_00But then here's how I'm gonna take that and take it another step further. If you don't push yourself or allow yourself to speak up like you belong in the room, right? That's true. How will you then be able to continue to grow? Because sometimes those lessons that you learn from speaking up will be the lesson you need to push you forward. Right? Yeah. So sometimes, you know, like in meetings, sometimes, you know how you're in your in the meetings. I know I'm like this too, sometimes. Um, I'm in a meeting and I'm like, oh, do I want to say something? Do I want to raise my hand? Like you said, do I want to raise my hand? What if that sounds, oh God, I'm just gonna sound dumb.
SPEAKER_01Ridiculous. Well, that's how I talk to myself. Like, oh my God, you just sound dumb. Like, right, don't even say it.
SPEAKER_00Don't even say it. And then you're you're nervous, then you kind of hold yourself back. But no, say what you're going to say. Period. Right? Even if it doesn't make sense, right? You put yourself out there to say, you know what? I tried. Yeah. I did it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Right? Yeah, I think it's important just to not fear like making a mistake. It's okay. And I feel like that was a lot with me too, like taking chances because like I was afraid of even making a mistake. I didn't want to mess up. I don't like to mess up. Like, you know what I mean? It does.
SPEAKER_00It does. But then who wants to hear from their manager or their parents? Exactly. Or when you mess up, oh, I knew you, you know, you got to hear that. What is that? Uh uh, it sometimes comes off, you know, but you have to know the intention from that person. It's coming from love. Right. And if it's even if it's your manager or whomever.
SPEAKER_01Then it's coming out of just compassion, like care.
SPEAKER_00Or kind of care and it's constructive criticism. That's the word. Yep. Right? Yep. Constructive feedback, criticism. And sometimes here's what we do when they come back. Guess what we do? Take offense. Have the audacity. Oh my God, I'm not doing a good job. Is that what they're trying to say? Now, oh, see, I won't speak in the next meeting. I bet I won't. Bet I won't. You know? And then guess what you've done? Now you've removed yourself from the game. Now you removed yourself from the game. Even because you made a mistake, it's okay. It's okay. They came and just said, you know, maybe I would have done it differently or spoke about it differently, right? To you. Yeah. You done went and said, well, they didn't like what I said, and now, okay, they try to do this to me, know that I'm not gonna try again. There you go with fear. Then get what if what if, what if, what if, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh, he don't like me, so now he's giving favoritism to the next person. Wait.
unknownWhat?
SPEAKER_00That is so valid. No, but just from what means that you never Oh, he don't like me no more. So I'm done. Nope. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. Y'all, don't do it. I promise you, keep going. Keep going. Take that constructive criticism.
SPEAKER_01And not being afraid of making mistakes and letting it hold you back from even moving forward again.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Because, you know, we ask God for certain things, right? And we all say, you know, some of us ask God, you know, for a bigger life while refusing to leave small spaces, right? So that criticism or that constructive feedback could help push you to bigger things. That's it. And where you're trying to go in life. That's it. Because sometimes you can always, you're coachable, you're teachable, you can always learn from someone else that you may, who is your manager, because they do have authority over you. That's facts. Right? And that they may have been through it, but we sometimes want to be like, uh, they don't know better than me. Taking offense. Let it go. Let it go. That's it. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and just like just going back on that comfort zone thing that you just said, too. Um, I think too, yes, we're talking about more so in a corporate world, because that's kind of like where me and mom come from. But also too, think about it in like relationships and friendships too. Like we're so comfortable. I'm gonna say from a relationship standpoint, you know how you're just so comfortable in a relationship, but you know the relationship really ain't good. But because you're so comfortable, you don't want to break up and move on. Like, that's the thing too, because then you're afraid of like, oh my god, what if I'm gonna be single forever? What if I'm gonna be alone forever? Oh my god, nobody's gonna want me, so I might as well just stay here. You just be putting up with nonsense and you know it ain't right. You say, You know what I mean? Now that's that's being afraid, that's being in your comfort zone, and that is what's holding us back too from even going towards you know what the Lord really wants for us, too.
SPEAKER_00Now that's facts. Because been there done that, right? And have. And um, you know, in relationship, it's hard. It is tricky, right? You do know. You know, you know, right? However, we are afraid that fear comes. Well, what if I like you said, what if I'm by myself? Oh no. What if nobody wanna ask me out on a date? What if? But what if you stay in that relationship and remain miserable? Oh, and what if you remain stuck? What what if?
SPEAKER_01What if that? I mean, what if that person or the relationship is holding you back from the calling and the purpose that God has for you in your life?
SPEAKER_00My God, that part. So do you see we can take we can sweeten that what if? What if?
SPEAKER_01Because that's how fear sounds is the what if questions. Oh gosh, what if I don't do this? What if it happens like this? Oh my gosh, and it exact it's anxiety. If like we I think we talked about this a few years back, but that movie Inside Out, that anxiety little character, like the different it scenarios that it paints in your mind that things aren't even going to happen.
SPEAKER_00Don't even happen. But you then already thought about it. But we want I I kind of want to go back to that relationship and the what if and the fear of leaving it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Now, I don't we don't know what anyone goes through. And we don't know in timing and you know, you have to hear from God, right? And be led by the spirit in order to make moves, right? We don't operate by the flesh. So I don't want to kind of paint the picture of when we're talking about relationships and when we're talking about, you know, making a move, right? Make sure you check in with the Holy Spirit. That's true too, right? It's not that when you feel like it, right, but it has to be with discernment. And you have to operate off of what the Holy Spirit shares with you. Now the Holy Spirit can speak to me and can speak to Deja, but he may not be speaking to you at this moment, but inside, you know, what ifs are nagging at you? They're just kind of constantly, well, what if I do this? What if I do that? Just continuously pray. And the Holy Spirit will lead you into what you need to do because there is greater for you. God has uh ordained and put a purpose in your life, right? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So and then I think also, too, just piggybacking off of that too, and sometimes too, maybe he's just there's no, because you know, like mom said, checking inward, and maybe there's no check, there's no anything that's there. Okay, and then from that point, I think what we've learned is just follow wisdom.
SPEAKER_00Follow wisdom. You always follow wisdom, wisdom, use good judgment. That's it. We heard that from our favorite favorite person, Pastor Nancy Defran. We call her still pastor, even though she was a pastor, but yeah, Nancy Dufrain, we love her. Nancy Dufresne is she said, you know, sometimes you don't hear from God, right?
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah, like I just feel like sometimes certain situations kind of like, okay, he's not really telling me, you know, what either which way, which is okay. But then I think at that point it's like, okay, follow wisdom. Okay, if you feel like it's the right decision, like not feel like, but if you you follow wisdom. Because I don't want to say the wrong word. Yeah. Follow wisdom. And then proceed with caution. Yeah, go forward, but just proceed with caution.
SPEAKER_00He'll check you. He will, he will. That's it. And then you will have conviction. That's it. So therefore, what you do, right? Like you said, you may not hear from God and don't wait for God sometime too, either, because you won't never move, right? Right. Um, and not, no. You wait for God, but if you don't hear him clearly, right. Or he's not telling you either which way saying anything, or you're kind of like, wait, Lord, I'm waiting, I'm waiting, I'm waiting. Use good judgment. And like we said, just proceed, move forward.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Okay. Like we said, he'll check. Oh, that ain't right. Oh, turn the other way. Oh.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. But don't fear. Yeah. Do not fear. Just do not fear. Because, like we said, what does fear sound like, right? Maybe. Wait till later. Wait until I'm perfect. Oh, you know, I'm gonna need all this money first. Or, you know, let me wait till I lose some weight. That's what fear sounds like. That may be. But why wait for all? There's no perfect timing. There's no perfect, oh my gosh. So, y'all, let me go to a story. Uh-oh. Sorry about that. Let me go to a story. Um, for example, right, two years ago I turned 50. Oh, here she goes, y'all. 50. Big 5-0. And you know, I was coming up until, you know, days just like, Mom, what are we gonna do? What we gonna do? And then here goes me. Oh, I don't know if I want to have a party. I don't know. You know, I'm afraid that what if nobody shows up? Oh, I invited these people, and then um, oh Lord, I don't even know if anybody's gonna come up. So guess what? I don't think I want to have no party. Yeah, I did that for two to three months. Right. Because fear was keeping me to finally kind of say, you know what, to get it to shut up. Because it was, I mean, it was on me. Like, yeah, who's gonna show up? Who's gonna come to my party? Oh, well, you know what? I'm not gonna have anything because I'm not gonna get my feelings hurt.
SPEAKER_01Period. Ooh, that's really, really good. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I'm not gonna get my feelings hurt.
SPEAKER_01I'm not gonna get my feelings hurt.
SPEAKER_00So guess what? In order for me not to get my feelings hurt, I won't do it. Oh, but that also reminds me just kind of like, oh, sorry, go ahead.
SPEAKER_01No, no, no, no. No, go ahead with your point. Well, because like you said, I don't want to get my feelings hurt. And how many people just hold back from just e meeting new people too because it's fear of rejection.
SPEAKER_00Fear of rejection. That's basically that's what we all let's let's slice it and dice it. Slice it and dice it. It is fear of rejection. That's it. Fear that someone's not gonna show up. Yeah. I don't want to get my feelings hurt. So guess what? I'm not gonna do it. I'm not gonna do it. That's fear. Yeah. You're worried. You already put it in your mind that nobody likes me. No one's gonna like me. I can't make a friend. Nope. Oh, nobody's gonna love me. Oh, nobody does love me. Nobody even cares. Oh, no one even cares. So it's my birthday. Nobody cares about what who cares? Yeah. Girl. Did that for two months. But how many people really just that scenario here? Something's so simple and small. Can relate. We don't do something because of the fear of what we think is going to happen. Rejection. Rejection. We feeling less than, or someone doesn't like me, or oh my gosh, I, you know, I'm gonna throw this big old party. No one's gonna show up. Yep. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. All of those scenarios went through my mind. So guess what? I said no. Then the last minute, um, you know, two or three months before, I'm like, you know what? I deserve that. Right. I deserve to be celebrated. Why not? Why not? You know, I deserve, you know, and then here you go in your back of your mind. Well, if no one shows up, it's gonna be okay. Because you you got to always want to protect yourself too.
SPEAKER_01Sometimes you just gotta talk yourself out of that limit. Like, well, it's okay if they don't, you know, you gotta have them walls up sometime. You have to, you but this is how you cope with it. Like you go, if they don't show up, they don't show up. This is how I'm gonna react, and it's gonna be fine, then I'm just gonna smile, and I'm just gonna still be. Be like ha ha ha. You have to because it's a what is it?
SPEAKER_00A defense mechanism. Right? That's what it is. So I went ahead and I'm like, you know what? Okay, let's go ahead and you know what? I deserve to be celebrated. Right. I deserve that, you know. Why am I trying to not be celebrated or not enjoy my 50th birthday? Why? Because I'm afraid that nobody's gonna show up. But that's how life is. It will show you and paint a picture, and you stay stuck and don't do what you truly wanna do because of that fear of failure. Yeah. Fear of rejection. Yeah. Y'all. And then so we found a place, we did it. The best time of my life.
SPEAKER_01What did she say like that? But yeah, it was it was such a great party. I enjoyed it. I always tell her about it. I'm like, girl, that was the best party ever. I loved it.
SPEAKER_00My 50th was just amazing from start to finish. Just gratefulness, just grateful. But what if I didn't do it? What if? I wouldn't have not been able to talk about it today and to live my best life and enjoy the thing that God has for me. Yeah, that's so good. He wants his daughter to be, you know, celebrated. Why not? He wants those things for us. He wants us to be our best.
SPEAKER_01And he wants us to live the best life. Period. Yes. So it's just like, why hold back from living the best life that he wants us to live? Yeah, and so what it is is faith requires movement.
SPEAKER_00Yep, that's it. That's it. The life you want may exist on the other side of uncomfortable obedience. Ooh. Real. Do you hear what I'm saying? It's uncomfortable. Very uncomfortable. Trying and doing and anything that you want out of life, it's uncomfortable. Those movements.
SPEAKER_01But sometimes he could be calling you to do something that is like, okay, for example, like say, for me, for example, I'm not naturally a speaker, right? Yeah. But what if somebody is approaches me and they're like, well, can you speak for 20 minutes in front of like an audience of a thousand people? Oh. Yeah. But if if it approaches me, and then I hear that, okay, it's okay to do it. It's uncomfortable for me, but I'm obeying what he wants. Correct. Obedience. That's obedience, you know? So that's I'm not gonna stop myself just because I'm afraid of being stuck in my comfort zone. Because, okay, this may be another open door for something else that he has in store. Period.
SPEAKER_00But you'll never know. You never know if you don't take that chance. And uh be obedient. Obedience. It requires faith requires obedience. It's obedience. And it's a movement. And it's a movement. Faith is a movement, right? Fear is keeping you stuck and in place. Familiarity. Yeah. Right? Where which side do you want to be on? I want to keep moving. I want to keep moving forward. I want to be trusting.
SPEAKER_01That's what you said.
SPEAKER_00Okay, I'll just do it. Okay. And and that obedience looks like post-scared. Right? Yep. Do it scared. Do it scared. It means start scared. Right? Apply scared. Wherever you are in whatever that is, do it. That's it. You know, trust God, right? It will work out. But you have to have faith. And remember, faith and fear cannot exist together. It just can't. It cannot. So if y'all are like us or have been like us or doing like us, you know, like mom said, yes, start scared, post scared, apply scared, heal scared, trust God scared.
SPEAKER_01That's it. Do it scared. Walk away scared.
SPEAKER_00Grow scared. Like, do it scared. You know, one thing that was on my heart, and I know that as mom and daughters, um, you know, mothers, right? There has not been a book or a manual on being a parent or a mother. That's right. Now, wait. Okay, let me kind of get my words together on that one. There are books out there, but there are no manual where you have to show up and be perfect as a parent, right? There is sometimes where we are going to be like, you know, we messed up, right? Or, you know, and and and sometimes mothers, you know, you fear of being judged. Don't, you know, there has not been a manual to raising your child, right? But God gave us a responsibility. That's right. To distance them, discipline them, to raise them to be good human beings. That's right. Right? So when sometimes, you know, we do fear, that's one of the fear as moms. I know for me, what's sister so-and-so gonna say about me, or you know, who's gonna talk about me. What if you mess up? Yeah, you mess up and you feel guilty and you feel judged, and you know it's mom guilt is for real. It's a real thing. I know it is. God has given you this responsibility. Whether you have missed it some, ask for forgiveness, keep moving, right? But you have a responsibility to discipline your child, to be good human beings, to go out there and just be just good people. You know, keeping them raised up in that word of God, because that word will carry them through. That is who, and that is something if someone, you know, because I know moms, that's how it is, and and that's that fear of being judged, and I gotta be a good parent, I gotta be a perfect mom, I gotta be a perfect fist. You're doing an amazing job. That's it. Keep going. Keep going.
SPEAKER_01That's so good. Oh, that's so good. Awesome job, mom. That was great. Point.
SPEAKER_00Thank you. So, you know, y'all, we just wanted to come here. Yeah, and just talk about what is holding you back. What is holding you back? Don't let it. Don't let it you know, don't let fear. Talk to it, speak to it. You gotta shut it down. Shut it down soon as it comes in your mind. Nope, I am highly favored. That's it. I am blessed.
SPEAKER_01You gotta guide to add them scriptures too to backing up too, and just the more is like, okay, I can do all things through Christ who transcends me. The Lord is my shepherd, I like nothing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, hold on to two or three good scriptures. Hold on to them. Whatever that situation is for you, hold on to it. But one of the scriptures we're gonna leave you with today is 2 Timothy one and seven, which is for God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
