We wrestle with what Christian maturity looks like in Philippians 3:15 through 4:3, especially the call to press forward instead of living in the past. We talk honestly about distractions, heavenly citizenship, and why unity in the church matters enough for Paul to plead for it by name.
• pressing toward the goal and defining maturity in Christ
• God making things clear when believers disagree
• living up to what we have already attained and holding on to real progress
• recognizing hedonism and “earthly things” as a constant pull
• citizenship in heaven and the hope of transformed bodies
• standing firm in the Lord and dealing with conflict inside the church
• helping others reconcile for the sake of the gospel
Read the rest of Philippians chapter four.

Banter And What We’re Reading

SPEAKER_00

You are listening to the Regular Guys Bible Study Podcast, the Bible study for regular guys by regular guys. We are your host, Ken and Steve, and we are just regular guys studying the Bible together. Not theologians.

SPEAKER_02

Alright, how's it going, Ken?

SPEAKER_00

It's going good. Um, sorry that I had it on voice uh isolation there for a second, so you the music probably wasn't coming in. You didn't know what was going on at first. Oh, I knew what was going on, but you couldn't hear it, and it's so enjoyable. Um I noticed you didn't dance until I turned it to uh studio mode. So um yeah, so when we play board games, I I put it on uh uh uh uh voice isolation so there's no echoes, but when we do the podcast, I put it on studio. So this is Discord, by the way, if you're you're wondering what I'm referring to.

SPEAKER_02

Steve and I'm pretty sure no one cares.

SPEAKER_00

Steve and I record this through Discord, which is actually pretty good.

SPEAKER_02

You know what else people don't care about, Ken? What? I got a new air conditioner in my shop.

SPEAKER_00

Uh it's all fancy. They might care because you know what? I'm looking at your your head right now, and there's not a drop of sweat on your head.

SPEAKER_02

That's not true. I just got done working out. It's actually pretty sweaty.

SPEAKER_00

It doesn't look sweaty. Okay, well, whatever.

SPEAKER_02

It's not too bad.

SPEAKER_00

All right. Anyway, all right, guys, um, thanks for coming back. We are going to be talking about Philippians chapter three. We're gonna start in verse 15, and we're gonna go through chapter four, verse three, and that'll set us up for one closing um uh one more closing episode after that.

SPEAKER_02

And Ken's gonna read first, and then I'm gonna close out with uh chapter four beginning.

SPEAKER_00

You know what? I'm okay with that. It's really not very long. Um, but what we're gonna do is I think we should read the end of chapter three and then discuss, and then read chapter four and discuss. What do you think about that, Steve? Are you paying attention? That's a great idea.

SPEAKER_02

My new air conditioner has fancy uh timer settings. Uh and I figured we'd be doing this a little earlier than this, so I set up the timer to turn off at eight o'clock. Uh so I'm turning it back on.

SPEAKER_00

So my my lapse in judgment has cost you it cost you money, first of all. And now it's good.

SPEAKER_02

Because I've been running it since about 5 30.

SPEAKER_03

But that's okay.

SPEAKER_00

All right. All right. I don't really feel bad about it. So let's get started. If you haven't read it, guys, as always, um pause the pause the podcast. Go ahead and read Philippians chapter 3, 15 through verse uh four-three.

SPEAKER_02

Um and then speaking of Reddit, maybe we should have a Reddit channel. Uh then all the trolls could come out and tell us what they think of our podcast.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Yeah, we should start. You know, we really should have some social media outlet, and we have nothing. I hate social media. I do too. No, I don't. I don't. I work there. I work at social media for now.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, of all social media, I hate that one the most.

SPEAKER_00

Uh all right. Let's don't talk about the evils of social media. Um, okay, I but no, I'm actually gonna I do have a business idea, Steve. It's not it's a business idea, but it's uh no, it's not a business out idea. It is a it is a uh social media putting you to sleep. It's a social media uh network for the church.

SPEAKER_02

That is kind of like LinkedIn is for business.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, but there is no here's the thing about this churches would pay for it. Um there would be no freedom of speech. No, because you can't. You you can't, right? That's um it would by the way, I could not hear you laughing. Do you have on some uh cancellation thing? Oh, probably. And you turn that off. Um, but um uh you know it you would not be allowed to do political speech or um you know any any kind of uh disprove the gospel speech. Yeah, it's it's all about um so I would call it um the church social. Um but it would start there, but then it would expand to services for churches. So um I for example, I cannot stand the way our church does scheduling and stuff, the apps and stuff. It's just so confusing to me. Anyway, I don't know why I'm on that.

SPEAKER_02

Uh I don't either.

SPEAKER_00

So I'm just talking. All right, I'm gonna go read now. All right.

SPEAKER_02

So hopefully you um They didn't even have to pause it, they had plenty of time in your tirade to go and read it.

SPEAKER_00

All right. Um, so man, if somebody steals my idea, go ahead. All right, so here we go.

Reading Philippians 3:15-21

SPEAKER_00

Uh Philippians chapter 3, verse 15. All of us then who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that that too God will make clear to you. Only let us live up to what we have already attained. Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. For as I have often told you before, and now tell you again, even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their God is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things, but our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. No, you didn't you weren't even paying attention when I said that, were you, Steve? Is that when you were looking back at the like not even paying attention to me? Okay.

SPEAKER_02

No, we're gonna stop right there. Are we gonna talk about social media again? Because I kind of dropped off at that point, too.

SPEAKER_00

Uh it's your fault. You started the whole social media conversation. Anyway, um uh no, we're gonna read the first, the end of three, what I just read, and then we're gonna discuss it. Then we're gonna read the little part of four, and we're gonna discuss that. And then we're gonna say, bye-bye. Bye-bye.

SPEAKER_03

Uh bye-bye. Okay. All right.

Maturity Means Pressing Forward

SPEAKER_03

So what do you got, Ken?

SPEAKER_00

Well, how does it start off? It says, all of us then who are mature should take such a view of things. What's he talking about?

SPEAKER_02

Such a view. I think this points up above where we should forget about the past and press towards the goal.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, and what is the goal?

SPEAKER_03

Oh, I didn't write that part down.

SPEAKER_00

The goal is to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

SPEAKER_03

Whatever that, you know, that's salvation. To be with Jesus. All right.

SPEAKER_02

So on that note, though, yes, if we've already accepted Christ into our heart, we've already obtained that goal.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, but as Paul says, we keep working out our salvation. I don't know really what that means, but uh we try to live as Christ. Um and and you know, and it's about forgetting what's been done and keep pressing forward to and also he's talking about those who are mature should take such a view of things. If you are mature in Christ, you need to keep pressing on. Those who are immature in Christ, you know, there are many people who are immature in Christ and will never grow, they will never mature, right?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, so this is talking about those who are mature. Um now, those who are not mature in Christ, he's not saying toward maturing, they should be working toward maturity. And a lot of the what uh he talks about, what Paul has talked about, is about how to mature in Christ. And so now he's saying those who are mature should have uh basically he's saying if you are mature in Christ, you should have the same mindset as I do.

SPEAKER_03

Not Ken, at Paul.

SPEAKER_02

And he also says, even if what you do isn't the same as what I do, God will guide you.

SPEAKER_00

Are you talking about um verse?

SPEAKER_02

And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you.

SPEAKER_00

Alright. So I have a question about this. So you took it to mean one thing, but I could take it either way. All right. So I could take that what verse is that? That is 15 still. Oh, it's still 15. Ah, and if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Um so it could be saying that if you think differently from me, then God will correct you. God will make it clear to you your the error of your ways. Or if you think differently than me in so in certain areas, God will clarify that that path for you, that you that thing you're teaching.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I think he's saying trust in God to lead you on your path.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. So what if so what would that be? Everybody's path is different. But I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

But the gospel is the same.

unknown

Right?

SPEAKER_02

So what could be different? Paul was Paul was called to basically jumpstart the early church and suffer in prison, or I don't know if he suffers in prison. Actually, I think he's does better when he's in prison than when he's not. Um I don't think our goal or our path involves prison time. Maybe it will in the future, but I don't see a obvious way for me to end up there because of my faith. So that's what I mean by different.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm thinking um, yeah, that would be different. But he's not telling people to go be in prison, right?

SPEAKER_02

No, but he's telling them to press on toward the goal, um, for which goal God has called well, he says me, heavenward in Christ, in verse 14.

SPEAKER_00

Um I I really think it could be either way, by the way. I I think it could be saying, like, yeah, okay, maybe you think your calling is to go feed the poor, right? Feed the hungry. Um, and that's that's fine. Let God work that out and how to do that. Um, but he also might be saying, um, okay, so you might think that um you need to uh not walk more than so many steps on the Sabbath. And um I want God to make that clear to you that that is not a requirement you should be putting on people.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he could mean that as well.

SPEAKER_00

So I don't know, honestly. I I can't I just can't tell. Actually, I think I did look at the translation.

SPEAKER_02

That's why I think the main point to take out of it is God will guide you.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he says, yeah, I I agree with that. He says, and this is the NLT, which is a uh you know, a meaning translation, and I still can't tell what it means. It says, if you disagree on some point, I believe God will make it plain to you.

SPEAKER_02

Um I wonder if he's talking about disagreement within the church, because he does talk more about that in chapter four.

SPEAKER_03

That's true. He could be building up towards that. Maybe so. All right. Uh let's see. What else do you got, Steve?

SPEAKER_00

I got something for 16. Um he says in 16 um that we need to live up to what we have already attained. What does that mean to live up to what we have already attained?

SPEAKER_02

So my note on that one says, hold on to the knowledge of your salvation, but that doesn't fit. It's more than that. It's actual I think it's um doing because we have already obtained salvation. So in our maturity, recognizing that we've been saved, we should feel led to do more things for Christ.

SPEAKER_00

Alright. Let me uh read New Living again. It says But we must hold on to the progress we have already made. Now that seems weird because if you jump back to Forgetting what is what is past.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, 13. Forget forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.

SPEAKER_03

Right. So what have we already attained, Steve?

SPEAKER_02

Uh forgiveness of our sins. Past, present, and future.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, okay, so we have attained that. What else is do you think that's what he's talking about, or is he talking about something further?

SPEAKER_02

I I I feel like that's what he's talking about, but I could not being the original intended recipient of the letter, yeah, it could mean a lot of different things.

SPEAKER_00

I think he is talking to the mature in Christ still, uh to those who are mature. Only let us live up to what we have already attained. I believe he's talking about um service. I think he's talking about love for your neighbors. I think he's talking about um fruit of the spirit. The fruits of the spirit. And you know, there's a term I it's amazing. I'm I'm pretty old. I'm not quite 60.

SPEAKER_02

You're not pretty, you're just old.

SPEAKER_00

Anyway, I've heard this, I've heard this phrase my whole life. And it's it's never meant anything to me.

SPEAKER_02

But what? Fruits of the spirit?

SPEAKER_00

No, peace that passes all understanding. Oh the peace that passes all understanding, it's always just been a phrase to me. But if you think about what that means, is you have peace that makes no sense. It makes no sense because you have a peace when there's no common sense that you would have peace through the circumstance you're in.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. That's pretty much what it means.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And just recently that dawned on me what that really means. Uh, I'm really not bright.

SPEAKER_02

Um Well, I I'm gonna give you a little bit of grace there because I think the church is very bad at doing that sort of thing where they they grab hold of a few words and it becomes this saying, and then over time it it's just a saying. It's not it's lost all its meaning. I mean, it hasn't lost it all, but it's it becomes just words.

SPEAKER_00

It just becomes a saying that it's yeah. Yeah. Like we say amen at the end of a prayer. That's what you do.

SPEAKER_03

Right. All right. What else, Steve?

Earthly Mindsets And Heavenly Citizenship

SPEAKER_02

All right. What do I have for 17? So 17 says, join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. Um basically he's saying, follow, follow in my footsteps and others that do similar.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, follow in my footsteps or follow in people who follow me. Who follow people who follow in my footsteps, follow in their footsteps.

SPEAKER_02

Um because unlike us, he's not saying do as I say, not as I do. He's saying do as I do and as I say.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. And and if I'm not there, since I'm not there, do as other people do as I do.

SPEAKER_03

Doo doo.

SPEAKER_00

All right. What else do you got? I got something for 19.

SPEAKER_02

Me too. Go ahead.

SPEAKER_00

Uh 19 says their destiny is destruction, their God is their stomach, and their glory is their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. Um, all right, so this is talking about um the enemies of the cross of Christ. And what do I say? Um, I I would say sometimes I feel like my God is my stomach.

SPEAKER_02

I know what you mean. If you're hungry enough, that's all you can think about.

SPEAKER_00

No, but I mean, even when I'm not that hungry, I'm looking for these like special foods. Oh, let's try, let's try this special pizza place I heard that was so good. Right. Um, we spend a lot of time, I think, in our culture, looking for some great food. I mean, how many coffee snobs do I know? Um, and you know, we make fun of you because you drink folgers.

SPEAKER_02

Because I'm not a coffee snob.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But I do like food, but I'm not a snob about food. I like all food.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm not a snob about food, too, but but I think I would be if I had enough money. You know, that's if I had too much money, if I had too much money. I would be a food snob.

SPEAKER_02

There's just something really good about cheap Mexican food.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I would be a food snob about cheap cheap Mexican food.

SPEAKER_02

No, you'd go to an expensive Mexican food place.

SPEAKER_00

No. Expensive Mexican food places are the worst.

SPEAKER_02

I agree.

SPEAKER_00

They're like fusion. It's like Mexican, Japanese, Korean fusion.

SPEAKER_02

So I only had one word written down for verse 19.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Hedonistic.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, so you're calling me hedonistic, okay.

SPEAKER_02

I think the American culture is hedonistic, yes. And we do get sucked into it sometimes. But I think what he's describing is hedonism.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Yeah. Your mind is set on earthly things. Yeah, I agree.

SPEAKER_00

Um, and I think that's a real danger in the uh for I'm not I wanted to say the church, but not the church. Uh not the global church. I mean the individual uh Christian is it's really easy to get our mind on the things around us instead of on Christ. There's a lot going on, especially in Western distraction is extremely easy. Yes, especially in the Western culture. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Um but our citizenship. Go ahead.

SPEAKER_00

Uh no, go ahead. Our citizenship is in heaven, what you're gonna say. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It is, and we eagerly eagerly await a savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. You know, my wife has a lot of health issues.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_02

And she holds on to this, she can't wait for her heavenly body.

SPEAKER_00

That's awesome. That really is awesome.

SPEAKER_02

Well, it's also a little depressing.

SPEAKER_00

It is sad also for her life on this earth. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But she is really looking forward to that. And I am too. For her sake.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you're wanting her to have that heavenly body.

SPEAKER_02

That's that's all I had for uh chapter three.

SPEAKER_00

All right. Yeah, I don't have anything else. Let's go to chapter four.

SPEAKER_02

All right, we're gonna do chapter four just verse one through three.

Reading Philippians 4:1-3

SPEAKER_02

Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends. I plead with Uodia, and I plead with syntic to be of the same mind in the Lord. Yes, and I ask you, my true companion, help these women since they have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers whose names are in the book of life.

SPEAKER_00

All right. Um you did you said names.

SPEAKER_02

I said names. I have no idea if they're correct, but I am going to encourage you to encourage your children to name their kids this so that you have grandchildren with these names.

SPEAKER_01

Eodia and Sintich Sintich Sintiche Sintiche? Sintich?

SPEAKER_02

Senti.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I don't know. That's a tough one.

SPEAKER_00

Um

Church Conflict And Standing Firm

SPEAKER_00

all right. So, first of all, what's the therefore, therefore? Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and my crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way. Um we just talked about how the heavenly body that God's changing us to into the heavenly body and preparing a place for us. Well, does he say preparing a place for us? I don't think so. No. Just talks about transferring uh transforming us to his heavenly body, transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. Therefore, blah blah blah, stand firm in the Lord in this way.

SPEAKER_03

So stand firm because that's what God is doing for us.

SPEAKER_00

Alright.

SPEAKER_02

Do you think Euodia and syntake or syntax tech tic-tac tic-tac? Let's just call her X. Um back to the social media reference.

SPEAKER_03

Uh do you think they're disagreeable? What do you mean?

SPEAKER_02

He's he's pleading them, pleading for them to be of the same mind in the Lord.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. They're obviously arguing with each other.

SPEAKER_03

At a minimum. What do you mean?

SPEAKER_02

Well, I mean, if they're high up in the church, they could like be causing a whole division of disagreement.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, potentially. That's true. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

You know what I was thinking? I first of all, I wondered how long it took for the message to get to Paul that these ladies were having issues with each other.

SPEAKER_02

And then the message to get back to them.

SPEAKER_00

The message to get back to them. It might have been resolved by the time they get that it got there.

SPEAKER_02

Or the church could have split.

SPEAKER_00

Or I mean, there could be all sorts of problems, right? Um, but it could have been resolved if if they both, you know, started loving each other as Christ would have them love each other. Um and so I just thought it was funny. Um, because how would you like getting this letter from Paul? Yay, a letter from Paul. Let's hear him read it. And then he calls me out by name. Calls both of us out by name, and it's like, oh my goodness. Especially if they were arguing over who sat where while it's being read. That would be funny. That would be funny. I kind of think that um that it would not have been resolved already. God, God would not have let Paul put that in there if it would already been resolved.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I think God knows that every church is going to have little disagreements that can blow up into bigger disagreements.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And so this is there to look on as guidance on in those situations.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I guess back in chapter three, maybe this is one of those cases where, and if some and if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Um not everything that not every decision that we make in the church is specified how it should be handled in the Bible, right?

SPEAKER_03

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

Uh so um how to run a children's ministry.

SPEAKER_02

Um, you know, uh what color to paint the sanctuary?

SPEAKER_00

Paint. You're supposed to pound it with gold.

unknown

Oh.

SPEAKER_00

The people are supposed to bring in their gold. Anyway, yeah, but there's all these all these little things that people can disagree upon. And I think with a right mind on God, God will lead us to the right decisions and the right ideas, and to love the people that have different ideas than us.

SPEAKER_02

So in three, he says, Um, help these women since they have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel. When I read contended, I think contentious. Because it seems like the same root word.

SPEAKER_00

Um yes.

SPEAKER_02

It almost feels negative to me.

SPEAKER_00

But it's not. Um, and if you read a different translation, uh asking my true partner to help these two women, for they worked hard with me in telling others the good news.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And ESV says labored by side by side with me.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I don't know why they used the word contended in the NIV. Yeah. Because it's not even a word-for-word translation. Why? That's just an odd word choice to me.

SPEAKER_02

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

Um, yeah, but it's obviously they were very positive in the work Paul was doing, and they worked side by side with him, um, and now they have a disagreement. Um also, he y he says, excuse me. He says, my true companion. Who is he calling his true companion?

SPEAKER_02

I'm not sure. I was trying to figure that out too. Um did you figure it out?

SPEAKER_00

Well, I think uh let me see. Um, I think he is oh, hold on, there's a little note here. My uh it's really stand it means like true yoke fellow. I think he's really talking about the Philadelphian church.

SPEAKER_03

Um So the U here, which is what I had written down, who is the you?

SPEAKER_02

Uh you're thinking it's a plural you, not a singular you.

SPEAKER_00

Or it could be talking about the leader he's sending, uh the whoever's leading this church. Um he says, let me see, in uh the loyal Syzigus.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, what is what does that mean? Where do you see that?

SPEAKER_00

That's a footnote. Let's see. No, wrong wrong dang it.

SPEAKER_03

Syzygus. Define. Not found. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

So what it says there is loyal sysius, which I don't know if that's somebody's name. So it might be um one of the leaders in the church.

SPEAKER_02

I just had a thought.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Perhaps true companion here is referring to those who are mature in the above verses and are walking in his path.

SPEAKER_03

Oh.

SPEAKER_00

That could be. I would see that I I could see him saying those are his true companions.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

As well. Because they're walking with him.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

Huh. That's pretty good, Steve. I'm gonna go with that.

SPEAKER_02

I kind of like that answer.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Good answer, Steve. You're the smartest person I know. Alright, and then um so you know, he works along with Clement and the rest of the co-workers, blah, bitty, blah, bitty, blah. Uh, that's I don't have anything else.

SPEAKER_03

I don't either.

SPEAKER_00

Alright.

Quick Summary And Next Reading

SPEAKER_00

Okay, so um, let's see. Is there a summary? Do you want to give a summary? Is there a way to give a summary? Yeah, it's kind of hard to summarize this.

SPEAKER_02

Uh press forward, do good things, be like Paul. Don't be in disagreement. Yeah, if there's any women that are bickering, shut them up.

SPEAKER_00

Oh man, I can't believe you just said that. That is not, that is not at all what he said. He said get them to work together again, basically, so that they can, because they do good things when they're working together. We already know that. Um, and that's how we all work well. We all work best when we're working together. Um, all right, so Steve, I'm gonna be out next week, so we're gonna have to skip a week. Sorry, guys. Um, and we will be back in two weeks. Um, so for that, read the rest of Philippians chapter four.

SPEAKER_02

There's not much left, and it's probably gonna be a really short.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it should be, I think. Um there's some pretty cool stuff, actually, in the first section of that. All right. Thanks for joining us, guys.
