Our Song of Deliverance

The meditation today comes from the Old Testament, Exodus 15: 19-21. All quotations are from the New Living Translation and are used with permission.

My hope is that you will benefit personally from this time with Jesus and encourage others to observe the Lord's Supper. In these trying times, we need to keep our eyes on Jesus!

Welcome to Eat This Bread Drink This Cup. The title of my communion meditation today is "Our Song of Deliverance." I read from Exodus 15: 19-21. All quotations are from the New Living Translation and are used with permission.

19 When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and charioteers rushed into the sea, the LORD brought the water crashing down on them. But the people of Israel had walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground!

20 Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine and led all the women as they played their tambourines and danced. 21 And Miriam sang this song:

     “Sing to the LORD,

     for he has triumphed gloriously;

     he has hurled both horse and rider

     into the sea.”

I like Miriam. She is a different kind of prophet. In response to the salvation of the Lord, she sings, she plays the tambourine, she dances, and she enlists all the women of Israel to join with her in a glorious celebration! Her song is shorter and easier to remember than the previous version sung by Moses and the people of Israel. In her song, the entire might of the Egyptian army is described in simple terms as a horse and its rider and God's miracle of deliverance as a glorious triumph. This moment for the people of Israel to remember is helped by a song and a dance to the rhythm of a tambourine! As Christians, we, too, have a moment to remember, and our Savior, Jesus, has helped us to remember it. Our horse and its rider, our enemies, are sin and death, and God's glorious triumph, His act of deliverance to save His people, is Jesus' death on the cross. Our moment to remember is likewise helped by the bread, which represents His body on the cross, and the wine, which represents His blood that He poured out for us. We remember Jesus' triumph over sin and death and our own deliverance as we partake of the bread and drink from the cup. Our time together with You, Jesus, just now is our song of deliverance. Let us pray.

Abba, Father. Today we bless and set aside this bread and the fruit of the vine in this cup to remember Your Son, Jesus. We know that the bread represents His body that was nailed to the cross, and the fruit of the vine represents His blood that He shed for us. As we pour out the wine from the cup, we are reminded of how Jesus poured out His own blood that our sins might be forgiven. Thank-you, Abba, Father, for helping us to remember how our enemies were defeated, and we were saved by Jesus' triumph on the cross through the bread and the wine set before us. Thank-you for our song of deliverance. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Today, Jesus invites you to partake of His supper. I read from Matthew 26: 26-28 (NLT).

26 As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.” Let us partake of the bread.

27 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, 28 for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many." Let us partake of the cup.

And the assembly of believers said, "Amen!"

Until next time, from Numbers 6: 24-26, "May the LORD bless you and protect you. May the LORD smile on you and be gracious to you. May the LORD show you his favor and give you his peace."
