Moved with Compassion

Loma H. Season 2 Episode 47

The meditation today comes from the New Testament, Mark 1: 40-45. All quotations are from the New Living Translation and are used with permission.

My hope is that you will benefit personally from this time with Jesus and encourage others to observe the Lord's Supper. In these trying times, we need to keep our eyes on Jesus!

Welcome to Eat This Bread Drink This Cup. The title of my communion meditation today is "Moved with Compassion." I read from Mark 1: 40-45. All quotations are from the New Living Translation and are used with permission.

40 A man with leprosy came and knelt in front of Jesus, begging to be healed. “If you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean,” he said.

41 Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!” 42 Instantly the leprosy disappeared, and the man was healed. 43 Then Jesus sent him on his way with a stern warning: 44 “Don’t tell anyone about this. Instead, go to the priest and let him examine you. Take along the offering required in the law of Moses for those who have been healed of leprosy. This will be a public testimony that you have been cleansed.”

45 But the man went and spread the word, proclaiming to everyone what had happened. As a result, large crowds soon surrounded Jesus, and he couldn’t publicly enter a town anywhere. He had to stay out in the secluded places, but people from everywhere kept coming to him.

When I read this story, I was moved with admiration because my Savior, Jesus, was moved with compassion when He encountered the man with leprosy. Once the news got out about Jesus, the teacher and miracle worker, He was pressed in on all sides by people seeking His help. None of us has known such notoriety or demand for help, and even with more modest crowds, most of us would run for cover after a while. I remember asking my nurse one day, "Is there anybody who is not sick?" Not Jesus! He always had time and patience—even for occasional Samaritans and Gentiles. I continue to be moved with admiration for my Savior, Jesus, because I am that man in the story begging for Jesus' help. "How so?" you might ask. Well, from reading the Scriptures, I learned that I had broken the law of God and was condemned to death for my sins. I needed help and I needed it quick! Just like the man with leprosy, Jesus was there, moved with compassion, and waiting to heal me. O glorious day, I am healed! I am not the only one who can insert themselves in this story. All of us who know Jesus as our Savior have been in his place. Today, we get to show our same gratitude to the man, Jesus, who healed us, by partaking of the bread and drinking from the cup to remember Him. Let us pray.

Abba, Father. Today we bless and set aside this bread and the fruit of the vine in this cup to remember Your Son, Jesus. We know that the bread represents His body that was nailed to the cross, and the fruit of the vine represents His blood that He shed for us. As we pour out the wine from the cup, we are reminded of how Jesus poured out His own blood that our sins might be forgiven. Abba, Father, thank-you for healing me and my brothers and sisters in the Lord assembled together this morning. Thank-you, Jesus, for Your patience and tender compassion You gave to each of us. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Today, Jesus invites you to partake of His supper. I read from Matthew 26: 26-28 (NLT).

26 As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.” Let us partake of the bread.

27 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, 28 for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many." Let us partake of the cup.

And the assembly of believers said, "Amen!"

Until next time, from Numbers 6: 24-26, "May the LORD bless you and protect you. May the LORD smile on you and be gracious to you. May the LORD show you his favor and give you his peace."
