A Mediator - Job 9: 32-35

Loma H. Hassell, II, MD Season 3 Episode 13

Welcome to the Eat This Bread Drink This Cup podcast. The communion meditation today is based on a passage of Scripture from the Old Testament, Job 9: 32-35. In this passage of Scripture, Job laments that his life would be better if he only had a mediator between himself and God. God knew humankind would require a mediator, and He asked Jesus Christ to be the one to mediate for us. All Scripture quotations are from the New Living Translation (NLT) and are used with permission.

As you listen to the episode today, my hope is that you will be encouraged from the time spent meditating on what Jesus has done for you. You are a special person; the one Jesus died to save!

Welcome to Eat This Bread Drink This Cup. The title of my communion meditation today is "A Mediator." I read from Job 9: 32-35. All quotations are from the New Living Translation (NLT) and are used with permission.

32 “God is not a mortal like me,

so I cannot argue with him or take him to trial.

33 If only there were a mediator between us,

someone who could bring us together.

34 The mediator could make God stop beating me,

and I would no longer live in terror of his punishment.

35 Then I could speak to him without fear,

but I cannot do that in my own strength.

The First Congress proposed 12 amendments, known as the Bill of Rights, to the U.S. Constitution on September 25, 1789. Ten of these twelve amendments were ratified by 10 of 13 legislatures of the original states on December 15, 1791. Among the provisions of the Sixth Amendment, we read, "the accused shall enjoy the right…to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defense." We are thankful for this lawful right! Like Job, we realized that it is a frightful thing to go before the Judge without representation. Even the Judge of Heaven and Earth recognized that humankind would be unable to stand before Him unless they had a mediator, and that mediator is Jesus Christ. As the Apostle Paul writes to Timothy (1 Timothy 2: 3-6),

3 This is good and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. 5 For, there is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus. 6 He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone. This is the message God gave to the world at just the right time.

Job did not realize that what he hoped for would soon come to pass one day. He and humankind along with him would have a mediator so that we "would no longer live in terror of His punishment" and "could speak to Him without fear" because of Jesus. Jesus offered His own life that we might be redeemed, and we remember what He did for us just now by partaking of the bread and drinking from the cup. Let us pray.

Abba, Father. Today we bless and set aside this bread and the fruit of the vine in this cup to remember Your Son, Jesus. We know that the bread represents His body that was nailed to the cross, and the fruit of the vine represents His blood that He shed for us. As we pour out the wine from the cup, we are reminded of how Jesus poured out His own blood that our sins might be forgiven. Abba, Father, we thank-you that we no longer live in fear. Because of Your great love for us, we now have a mediator, Jesus Christ, Your Son, who paid the penalty of our sin with His own life. We can stand before You not by our strength but through our mediator, Jesus. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Today, Jesus invites you to partake of His supper. I read from Matthew 26: 26-28 (NLT).

26 As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.” Let us partake of the bread.

27 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, 28 for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many." Let us partake of the cup.

And the assembly of believers said, "Amen!"

Until next time, from Numbers 6: 24-26, "May the LORD bless you and protect you. May the LORD smile on you and be gracious to you. May the LORD show you his favor and give you his peace."
