And then it stuck because your middle name. I don't want to repeat it.

See? Well, the Kim thing is interesting because uh when I moved to St. Paul years ago, there were like two or three other Kims working there. And my boss, Tim, was like, hey, you know, do you have a nickname or something? I said, Yeah, KJ. My dad used to, you know. He's like, okay, KJ. And it just stuck. And then I use that for writing and blah blah blah. But the Kim name is interesting because I can't count how many times I would get pantyhose samples in the mail, tampon samples in the mail. And then still like people, oh, Mrs. Stevens or Ms. Stevens.

Winter Olympics Kickoff And History

With these Olympics. They're clothed. Right. And they don't fight to the death as they did in the old days. I mean, back when they actually uh participated naked.

Oh, did you? Okay. Well, I didn't really concentrate much. So anything you have about regular Olympics? I know that the Winter Olympics are held every four years. And they used to coincide with the summer, and then they they broke them up so that the summer's every, you know, and two years from now the Summer Olympics will happen, and two years the Olympics, but they're both uh every four years.

That's crazy. Um, but because they're uh the international Olympic committee recognizes Puerto Rico as a separate, self-governing territory with distinct national identity. Which they do.

And so they and they have competed in the Winter Olympics in the past, Alpine Skiing and the Skeleton. Hey, in 2026, they're supposed to Alpine Skiing and the Skeleton, which is one of the one of the no, it's the loot, like the Lou's.

I don't know. Water skiing? Maybe there's a a ski jump set up, like in roller. No, I just find that like, isn't that fascinating? Yeah, maybe they probably go somewhere else and practice. I don't know.

Puerto Rico, Training, And Unlikely Teams

So here's the sports that the Winter Olympics cover. Um, well, maybe we should start with there's approximately 93 countries featuring 3,500 athletes, 232 from the U.S., that are participating this year. MBC airs it, some other people air it too. I find the best coverage is from the Canadian.

Yes. Because the Canadians they own the Winter Olympics. I mean, come on. They're winter sport country. Uh Mariah Carey and Andrea Wantelli are performing in the opening. Whoopdy. Yeah, whoopdy. Uh and it's six hours ahead of us, so there's you gotta factor that in. 16 sports, 116 events, including some new ones. Ski mountaineering, mixed team skeleton, and the women's double luge. So here's the other uh sports. There's ice sports, which include hockey figure skating, ice skating, uh, yeah, ice skating, uh, well, figure skating, short track speed skating, uh long term or long track speed skating, ice hockey, curling, curling.

Sports Lineup And New Events

Well, what other sports are there? So they're all cold stuff.

Yes. So then there's skiing slash snowboarding, which includes the alpine, cross-country, freestyle, Nordic combined, ski jumping, and then snowboarding and ski mountaineering, which is the new one.

It's got more than just skiing to it. You know, I didn't I don't know.

Sliding Sports Explained

Oh then Alpines, let's go back to Alpine skiing. USA's Makila shifter is the most decorated alpine skier in history. Over a hundred plus World Cup wins. That's a lot.

No. Uh and then the um also uh in the figure skating, um is he a figure skater, or maybe he's a a speed skater. I think he's a figure skater. His name is Maxim Naumov, and it's his first Olympics, and his parents were his coach. And remember there was uh um a plane crash, I think it was about a year ago, and there was a lot of uh there was a lot of people coming back from like the World Cup of figure skating, and the plane went down and everybody, everybody died, and his parents were on that plane. So one year ago in Washington, and so he is uh sentimental favorite for sure. And then there's also in figure skating, um Ilana Malum. That's probably an incorrect pronunciation, but he is the quad god figure skating. What used to be a triple, he makes a quad.

I was curious if you found anything about um how cities are chosen. Oh, one thing I did find out is that the colors of the rings actually at the time represented like all the countries that were participating had one color uh in their flag, like in common. So they picked those common colors to create the symbol. Thought that was pretty cool. That was in 1890s. In the 1890s, the guy that actually ran with it, Joseph Capanamimi or something like that.

Figure Skating Stories And Standouts

And I don't know how the cities are picked, but I do know that Colorado, Denver rejected it. They're like the only people who rejected it. They voted on it in 76, and they rejected hosting because the of financial and environmental concerns. Gotta respect it.

Lake Placid, New York. Get the hell out of here. Where my grandparents are living while they lived when they were alive. Yeah, and in fact, they lived there then. And so what Lake Placid did was a good idea. So they did the Winter Olympics and then they made a training ground. So you could go to the bobsled places and you could go to the Alpine ski places, and there were people training there.

Again, a big city's still, you know, nice. Yeah, there's lots of nice areas in Colorado. And it's not a far drive to get out of out of any big city, I don't think.

Crime could increase. You you know, and you build all these. I think in Beijing, when they did the Summer Olympics, you know, they build all these things and they people are like, this shit is rickety, man. Don't go to that whatever is gonna collapse because they had to do it so quick, you know. But I they do have lots of time, but you know so it's not always and and maybe they don't want to build it so it stays there forever. Maybe they want to take it down when they're done.

Um but yeah, so it brings a lot of people and it brings a lot of money in, but uh well, also with those people come, you know, problems too.

And then the pressure on the athletes. Uh like you know, here you are inflating your crotch so you can fly longer. Yeah.

You know, I think I don't get is that the Olympic team, like I just read the figure skating Olympic team, was just chosen like last week. You can't choose those people like last year. For who? Or just for the USA. And I don't know how everybody else does it, but uh you know, so you think you're gonna be on this team and then you don't make the team?

I guess that really pushes people to compete. And try the hardest till the very end. Because if you get picked, you're like, I'm I'm on a team, I'm gonna take a couple nights off, go eat some hot dogs.
