Exodus Chapter 7: Yahweh the Devourer of Dragons (Part 1)

Exodus Chapter 7 opens one of the most familiar sections of Scripture, yet it begins in a place many readers overlook. Before the Nile turns to blood or Egypt is struck by devastating plagues, God answers Pharaoh's challenge from Exodus 5: "Who is the LORD?" Rather than beginning with judgment alone, God first establishes His authority, commissions Moses as His representative before Pharaoh, and begins dismantling Egypt's entire worldview from the very first confrontation.
In this episode, we explore what it means for God to tell Moses, "I have made you like God to Pharaoh," why Aaron is described as Moses' prophet, and how this relationship mirrors broader biblical patterns of divine representation. We also examine Pharaoh's hardened heart through both the biblical text and the ancient Egyptian concept of Ma'at, showing how God's judgment is not arbitrary but a direct challenge to Pharaoh's claim of maintaining cosmic order, justice, and kingship.
We also discuss the often-overlooked significance of Aaron's staff becoming a tannin rather than the ordinary word for serpent, why this distinction matters in the ancient Near Eastern worldview, and how the confrontation before Pharaoh is far more than a display of miraculous power. Along the way, we examine Egyptian theology, the symbolism of chaos and order, the meaning behind God's repeated references to His outstretched hand, and why the plagues should be understood as a systematic judgment against Egypt's entire spiritual and religious system rather than simplistic one-to-one attacks on individual gods.
As with our Genesis series, our goal is not simply to repeat familiar Protestant interpretations or retell the Sunday school version of the Exodus story. Instead, we slow down, examine the ancient worldview behind the text, challenge assumptions that have become commonplace in modern Christianity, and uncover the theological depth that often disappears in translation. Before the first plague ever falls, Exodus 7 reveals that the conflict is ultimately about one question: Who truly rules creation—Pharaoh, the gods of Egypt, or Yahweh Himself?
