community to go, look, this is, this is where we need to be. 00:02:00.920 --> 00:02:05.959 We need to listen to the church. 00:02:05.959 --> 00:02:18.919 And so often churches are given to trying to build authority in the community, build respectability influence upon the community. 00:02:18.919 --> 00:02:23.439 But the church has an inherent problem to overcome. 00:02:23.439 --> 00:02:30.840 There is a major difficulty in impressing the world. 00:02:30.840 --> 00:02:35.680 And a lot of church growth is based upon trying to impress unbelievers. 00:02:35.680 --> 00:02:37.000 I want to be there. 00:02:37.000 --> 00:02:44.439 There's something they have to say, but there's an inherent problem that the church has to overcome. 00:02:44.439 --> 00:02:51.039 The message it has to give the world is something the world disdain. 00:02:51.039 --> 00:02:54.919 We have a message of crucifixion and death. 00:02:54.919 --> 00:02:59.039 We have a message that teaches that there's none righteous, no, not one. 00:02:59.039 --> 00:03:07.840 It's a message of humility, a message of man is not good. 00:03:07.840 --> 00:03:11.560 It's a message that men and women are sinners. 00:03:11.560 --> 00:03:16.960 A message of depravity is not a message that the world wants to hear. 00:03:16.960 --> 00:03:24.039 We have a message of judgment, hell, wrath. 00:03:24.039 --> 00:03:31.159 This doctrine is not what the world thinks is respectable. 00:03:31.159 --> 00:03:47.400 So the church has a message that they're called to proclaim, but is a message that the world inherently doesn't want to receive. 00:03:47.400 --> 00:04:09.560 And so the church is tempted to gain respectability and authority in the community, to gain a voice among unbelievers by adopting the same tactics that secular societies and institutions ploy to gain a hearing. 00:04:09.560 --> 00:04:13.759 And this was the problem of the church of Corinth. 00:04:13.759 --> 00:04:29.680 We've already talked about how they are evaluating preachers, not based upon spiritual credentials, but upon showy credentials, what appeared to be more impressive. 00:04:29.680 --> 00:04:39.480 They gravitated to the preaching of Apollos because he was an articulate presenter of the gospel. 00:04:39.480 --> 00:04:44.839 He was trained speaker. 00:04:44.839 --> 00:04:49.000 And they looked at Paul and go, Paul, you're not that good of a speaker. 00:04:49.000 --> 00:05:02.360 And if we're going to impress society, we need those who are impressive, something that can attract hearers if you would. 00:05:02.360 --> 00:05:17.959 And so Paul has given arguments, why not to evaluate preaching and in one way, the ministry of the church based upon the evaluation that the world would evaluate a church on. 00:05:17.959 --> 00:05:29.399 And he says, you're looking at Paul and Apollos through these lens of who can preach better and who can speak better and who seems to be the more educated among them. 00:05:29.399 --> 00:05:33.319 That's what you're evaluating preaching upon. 00:05:33.319 --> 00:05:38.560 But actually, that's not where the power is. 00:05:38.560 --> 00:05:44.360 And he comes to his you, brothers, I did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. 00:06:04.600 --> 00:06:09.399 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 00:06:09.399 --> 00:06:14.040 And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling. 00:06:14.040 --> 00:06:32.839 And my speech and my message were not in plausible words of 00:07:20.079 And would we not want God to work in our day, work in our preaching, work in our church services that would be truly transformational among ourselves, that we would come to church and we would be transformed into the likeness of Christ, that we wouldn't just come and you know, as soon as the sermons over go, hey, I can't wait to eat. 00:07:20.079 --> 00:07:29.399 I can go back to my normal life and unbelievers and visitors coming in couldn't just come in and sat down in their life, just be essentially the same. 00:07:29.399 --> 00:07:34.759 Or maybe they learned a couple of true to die to the self, to glorify God then we could be successful as a ministry. 00:13:00.360 --> 00:13:09.320 Yep Paul says such professional orators is not where the authority is found in the church. 00:13:18.379 --> 00:13:22.759 One translation translates this as eloquence of human wisdom. 00:13:22.759 --> 00:13:30.799 The NASB says I did not come as someone superior in speaking ability. know all the nuances of the different philosophical systems of the day and able to interwove that philosophy into their theology to show that theology is really congruent with the wisdom of this age.
