00:00:25.039 And I think, politically speaking, everybody wants unity. 00:00:25.039 --> 00:00:32.039 Wouldn't it be nice if we had unity in our country, but our country is not united. 00:00:32.039 --> 00:00:35.960 It's very divisive, especially in today's climate. 00:00:35.960 --> 00:00:40.479 And sometimes churches can get divisive and work against itself. 00:00:40.479 --> 00:00:46.679 Well, we're to strive for unity, but unity takes two things. 00:00:46.679 --> 00:01:03.600 And it's easy to think that unity is simply uniformity, that we all have to have the same gifts, the same abilities, and look the same and be the same, be little clones of one another. 00:01:03.600 --> 00:01:10.439 And we think if we're going to be unified, we need to be identical in every way. 00:01:10.439 --> 00:01:18.760 So sometimes unity is falsely this attempt to make us all, in some sense, all equal. 00:01:18.760 --> 00:01:20.879 We're all identical. 00:01:20.879 --> 00:01:29.920 And this is the false notion of Marxism, really, and the false notion of today, this pushing of equality. 00:01:29.920 --> 00:01:34.319 It's not this notion of unity, per se. 00:01:34.319 --> 00:01:44.620 It's the notion of having everybody having the same resources, the same outcome, everybody being identical. 00:01:44.620 --> 00:01:53.400 As if someone has more of something, someone has less than they're going to be envy and jealousy and that's going to create problems. 00:01:53.400 --> 00:01:58.519 And I think there's truth to that in the sense that envy does create problems. 00:01:58.519 --> 00:02:04.760 If someone has more money and someone's poor, it's easy for the one who has rich to look down on the poor person. 00:02:04.760 --> 00:02:08.800 And it's easy for the poor person to be envious of the rich person. 00:02:08.800 --> 00:02:20.960 It's like, well, if we're going to have unity, we just need to eliminate wealth and eliminate poverty and redistribute all the, if you would, all the resources evenly. 00:02:20.960 --> 00:02:26.400 And so we can all look the same, dress the same, be the same, and then we'll have peace. 00:02:26.400 --> 00:02:30.840 Well, that's not God's plan for unity. 00:02:30.840 --> 00:02:47.460 That's not God's plan for unity in the church, for all of us to have the same spiritual gifts and all have the same spiritual fruit, for all of us to look the same, for there to be unity in God's perspective, true unity, there has to be a measure of diversity. 00:02:47.460 --> 00:02:53.960 There has to be the blessing of diversity, some differences among us. 00:02:53.960 --> 00:02:57.879 Obviously, there's going to need to be some commonality. 00:02:57.879 --> 00:03:03.080 It can't be unified if we're completely different and we don't have a common objective. 00:03:03.080 --> 00:03:18.039 And so in this text, we'll see the unity and diversity of the church and the beauty of the diversity when it comes to establishing the unity and the common good of the whole. 00:03:18.039 --> 00:03:28.479 So what he does is contrasting the things that we have in common, one Lord, one Spirit, one God, one confession. 00:03:28.479 --> 00:03:41.719 But in making sure that this is what's unifying us, we have one gospel, not two gospels, one Lord, not two Lords, one objective, not two objectives. 00:03:41.719 --> 00:03:52.219 So we're unified in some of these things, but we're going to be diversified in our spiritual giftings and callings and our workings and ministries. 00:03:52.219 --> 00:03:53.960 And that is not a negative. 00:03:53.960 --> 00:03:58.879 That's actually a very positive when it comes to the church of the living God. 00:03:58.879 --> 00:04:07.000 This is not today's sermon, but in the next text, we're talking about the unity of the body, having different particular body parts. 00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:10.639 And these body parts are not the same and they're not designed to be the same. 00:04:10.639 --> 00:04:14.340 If everybody was an eye, we wouldn't be able to walk. 00:04:14.340 --> 00:04:21.519 We have to have a diversity to function and we need a diversity of believers in any body. 00:04:21.519 --> 00:04:32.860 We need to be diversified and we need to be rejoicing in our diversity so that we can function well and be united well together. 00:04:32.860 --> 00:04:48.199 What was happening in the church, of course, was they were over elevating the importance of the revelatory gifts, which are speaking in tongues and interpretation and prophecies that is interpreting tongues. 00:04:48.199 --> 00:04:59.199 These spiritual gifts were designed to provide temporal or provide communication from God while the New Testament was being written. 00:04:59.199 --> 00:05:05.560 Right here in the church of Corinth in the fifties, mid fifties, they didn't have the Bible. 00:05:05.560 --> 00:05:06.800 They didn't have the New Testament. 00:05:06.800 --> 00:05:12.720 So God provided them a means in which he would speak to them. 00:05:12.720 --> 00:05:17.279 And it wasn't the best means because the Bible is the best means to speak to them. 00:05:17.279 --> 00:05:24.480 But these revelatory gifts that were signs that the apostolic position had authority, which I believe worked. 00:05:24.480 --> 00:05:25.480 They were temporary. 00:05:25.480 --> 00:05:26.680 They weren't to last forever. 00:05:26.680 --> 00:05:30.319 But nevertheless, these revelatory gifts were very showy. 00:05:30.319 --> 00:05:36.519 They were very impressive and everybody wanted to have them. 00:05:36.519 --> 00:05:37.720 Everybody coveted them. 00:05:37.720 --> 00:05:48.920 At least it seems that way in the church of Corinth that they elevated speaking in tongues, principally speaking in tongues as the highest and the most important spiritual gift. 00:05:48.920 --> 00:05:57.639 And many of our charismatic friends, though we don't hold to the gifts continuing, they still do that today. 00:05:57.639 --> 00:06:04.360 They make the importance of speaking in tongues as the litmus test if you're a Christian, you speaking tongues. 00:06:04.360 --> 00:06:10.800 If you don't speak in tongues, you need a question if you're even filled with the Holy Spirit. 00:06:10.800 --> 00:06:13.879 And this is what the Corinthians were doing. 00:06:13.879 --> 00:06:22.279 They have elevated gifts to such a high extent that they wanted everybody to have the same gifting. 00:06:22.279 --> 00:06:26.680 And if you didn't have them, you should envy them or covet them and want them. 00:06:26.680 --> 00:06:32.480 And so this led to all kinds of problems in the church of Corinth. 00:06:32.480 --> 00:06:35.879 It calls them to minimize the other spiritual giftings. 00:06:35.879 --> 00:06:38.199 We see that in Chapter 12, 4 through 11. 00:06:38.199 --> 00:06:45.360 It calls them to elevate their independent personal experiences above the unity of the church. 00:06:45.360 --> 00:06:46.759 We see that in 12 through 30. 00:06:46.759 --> 00:06:49.360 The speaking in tongues become the greatest gift. 00:06:49.360 --> 00:06:56.079 From Paul, we see in the next chapter, he says, don't all strive after speaking in tongues. 00:06:56.079 --> 00:07:06.279 If you want one gift to strive for that we all should strive for, that we should all be unified in, if there's going to be one gift that you put at the top, choose love. 00:07:06.279 --> 00:07:09.040 That's the higher way. 00:07:09.040 --> 00:07:10.480 Let us all have that. 00:07:10.480 --> 00:07:16.160 That's one gift we all should seek to have and a great abundance. 00:07:16.160 --> 00:07:28.279 And finally, we'll see in Chapter 14 that this elevation of speaking in tongues brought such confusion to the church of Corinth that it brought a lot of disorder in their congregation and their worship service. 00:07:28.279 --> 00:07:31.120 They begin to speak over one another and brought a lot of disorder. 00:07:31.120 --> 00:07:33.079 It's like, you don't need to be doing this. 00:07:33.079 --> 00:07:37.600 If best you have one or two people at a time and no more than that. 00:07:37.600 --> 00:07:49.319 And he says, if you don't have an interpreter, you don't need to be doing it because without understanding of the mind, if you're just speaking in a language that no one can comprehend, then it does us no good. 00:07:49.319 --> 00:07:54.040 There's no value if you don't understand what's being said. 00:07:54.040 --> 00:07:55.560 And so here we are. 00:07:55.560 --> 00:08:03.360 We don't necessarily at GBC struggle with that particular issue, but we may struggle in other ways with spiritual gifting. 00:08:03.360 --> 00:08:10.879 We may struggle in thinking that you may struggle in some ways by thinking, well, I'm not that gifted. 00:08:10.879 --> 00:08:16.519 I lack spiritual gifting and I don't understand my role in the church because of it. 00:08:16.519 --> 00:08:21.959 I'm not a preacher or I'm not, you know, I'm not good with music or I can't do this or don't do that. 00:08:21.959 --> 00:08:24.319 And I just don't know my place. 00:08:24.319 --> 00:08:27.439 And I think that's a common experience between with competent to serve the church. 00:08:35.840 --> 00:08:44.000 So that's a common thing that we struggle with and we may elevate certain gifts to high and think, well, I don't have those gifts. 00:08:44.000 --> 00:09:00.320 So you're envious or you're maybe discouraged or you're like confidence or we may be those who are gifted in a particular area and we elevate or evaluate others based upon our strength. 00:09:00.320 --> 00:09:02.440 I see, I see this as I've done this. 00:09:02.440 --> 00:09:03.440 We've all done this. 00:09:03.440 --> 00:09:15.299 I'm sure maybe we're gifted hospitality or maybe we're, we're gifted with, with giving or maybe gifted at seeing needs and we see needs that other don't see. 00:09:15.299 --> 00:09:18.000 We got the discernment to go, oh, that person's struggling. 00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:21.360 And you have that gift to go and help that person. 00:09:21.360 --> 00:09:23.799 And you wonder, why am I the only one here? 00:09:23.799 --> we're doing and we feel alone in what we're doing in the church because other people are not assisting us. 00:09:38.940 --> 00:09:45.799 But we're looking at the whole church based upon our strength well, I can see well, but you don't realize feet don't see very good. 00:09:58.759 --> 00:10:06.840 But you don't walk around very well, you know, or you got other areas that you're unaware of, of your shortcomings. 00:10:06.840 --> 00:10:08.919 And God has purposely learned this. 00:10:08.919 --> 00:10:19.799 We're not going to go to it, but we can learn in Ephesians chapter four, God has purposely built a church where he brings in Christians and he says, he doesn't say, I'm going to give you every spiritual gift. 00:10:19.799 --> 00:10:23.279 There's only one man who had all the spiritual giftings. 00:10:23.279 --> 00:10:25.080 His name is Jesus. 00:10:25.080 --> 00:10:27.759 He had them perfectly all of them. 00:10:27.759 --> 00:10:29.860 He was the perfect man. 00:10:29.860 --> 00:10:35.399 But the rest of us were imperfect and incomplete and we're not designed to be complete men. 00:10:35.399 --> 00:10:37.799 If you were a perfect man, you wouldn't need the church. 00:10:37.799 --> 00:10:41.440 She's like, well, I can do everything. 00:10:41.440 --> 00:10:48.399 But you're made with strengths and you're made with weaknesses and order that you may have to become you. 00:10:48.399 --> 00:10:51.919 You're interdependent upon others. 00:10:51.919 --> 00:10:57.679 And you'll see that you're interdependent upon God's people in order to be fulfilled yourself. I'm just going to go do home church. 00:11:11.159 --> 00:11:12.679 I'm just going to do this by myself. 00:11:12.679 --> 00:11:20.080 I mean, the church has got full of problems and people are they you'll find that those who isolate themselves are not wise, but they find that they'll find that you're going to be maybe strong in the area of your strength. 00:11:32.919 --> 00:11:40.179 But in all the other areas that you need to correct it in and help in those areas are just going to get worse and worse in your life. 00:11:40.179 --> 00:11:41.519 You need an eye. 00:11:41.519 --> 00:11:46.080 has given you and the spiritual discernment or wisdom or kindness or faith. 00:12:09.919 --> 00:12:16.039 Whatever God is spiritually gifted you with, that's not for yourself. 00:12:16.039 --> 00:12:21.360 Your gifting was made for the church to serve his bride. 00:12:21.360 --> 00:12:26.360 And so in this we see the unity and diversity and we see this. 00:12:26.360 --> 00:12:29.399 He wants us not to be verse one. 00:12:29.399 --> 00:12:32.080 He says now concerning spiritual gifts. 00:12:32.080 --> 00:12:35.799 Brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 00:12:35.799 --> 00:12:37.879 That is we have a wrong print. 00:12:37.879 --> 00:12:48.200 The Corinthians at least had a wrong understanding of spiritual gifting and they were basing their unity on these gifts rather than upon the gospel. 00:12:48.200 --> 00:12:56.200 And so he's going to give us several things in which we're different and several things in which were similar. 00:12:56.200 --> 00:13:07.559 He's going to show us that there are some things that all of us have in common and he's going to show us there's some things that we have that are uniquely different from one another. 00:13:07.559 --> 00:13:16.559 And one says, first of all, verses two and three, we see that we all have different backgrounds, but we have one same profession. 00:13:16.559 --> 00:13:18.840 We all may have served different idols. 00:13:18.840 --> 00:13:24.480 Not all of us serve the same idols, but now we all serve the same Lord. 00:13:24.480 --> 00:13:33.120 You know, we didn't come from the same place, but we have ended up with the same profession of faith. 00:13:33.120 --> 00:13:47.559 Now it does seem according to verse two and three that the Corinthians were using the spiritual gifts, especially speaking in tongues and as a like a litmus test, like, okay, you're spiritually minded. 00:13:47.559 --> 00:13:49.639 You're filled with the spirit or you're a Christian. 00:13:49.639 --> 00:13:55.919 We know you're a Christian because look, you're able to do these things that are observable. 00:13:55.919 --> 00:14:04.000 I see observable clear evidence that you're filled with the spirit and you know, some of the spiritual giftings are not that observable. 00:14:04.000 --> 00:14:10.960 I mean, if you're a prayer warrior and you close your door in the closet and you're praying for the church and no one's aware of it, that's not as observable. 00:14:10.960 --> 00:14:11.960 Is it? 00:14:11.960 --> 00:14:16.519 So it's easier to think about the spiritual gifts that you can see and demonstrate. 00:14:16.519 --> 00:14:19.879 All those are the important ones. 00:14:19.879 --> 00:14:34.080 And this is seems to be going on and and and what we see in verse two and three, what Paul is saying is, you know, the litmus test that you're Christian is not that you speak in tongues. 00:14:34.080 --> 00:14:38.279 The litmus test that you're Christian is that you say Jesus is Lord. led. 00:14:47.000 --> 00:14:57.320 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the spirit of God ever says Jesus is a cursed and no one can say Jesus is Lord except in the Holy Spirit. 00:14:57.320 --> 00:15:01.279 Now how do they come out of this paganism? 00:15:01.279 --> 00:15:03.159 I mean, what is the evidence? 00:15:03.159 --> 00:15:12.039 Paul said to the Thessalonians, I know your election and I know it because you used to be serving all these idols. 00:15:12.039 --> 00:15:18.519 And you've turned from serving these dumb idols, these idols that can't speak. 00:15:18.519 --> 00:15:19.519 These mute idols. 00:15:19.519 --> 00:15:22.360 You turn from that to serving the living God. 00:15:22.360 --> 00:15:24.960 This is the evidence of your salvation. 00:15:24.960 --> 00:15:27.320 This is what Paul is basically saying here. 00:15:27.320 --> 00:15:36.480 I see the evidence that you're filled with the Holy Spirit, not because you speak in tongues, 00:16:26.480 It's like it doesn't make sense that you were led to worship idols. 00:16:26.480 --> 00:16:40.480 I mean, as he thinks about the Corinthians, like what led you to bow down and worship an object that's made out of stone or wood? 00:16:40.480 --> 00:16:44.200 Hebrews two, eighties four in making trust in his own creation. 00:16:44.200 --> 00:16:46.639 He makes idols that cannot speak. 00:16:46.639 --> 00:16:49.879 Psalm 115 tells us in verse five, they have mouths, but they cannot speak. 00:16:49.879 --> 00:16:53.159 They have eyes, but they cannot see. 00:16:53.159 --> 00:17:01.320 You know, Isaiah 44 talks about a man who has some wood and he builds a fire and he warms themselves, cooks his fish on it, goes, Oh, that was good. 00:17:01.320 --> 00:17:02.759 And then what I do with a leftover stick. 00:17:02.759 --> 00:17:03.759 Oh, I know what I'll do. 00:17:03.759 --> 00:17:06.960 I'll make an idol out of it and then I'll worship it. 00:17:06.960 --> 00:17:08.960 And he's making fun of that process. 00:17:08.960 --> 00:17:14.279 It's like how foolish, how naive, how crazy must you be? 00:17:14.279 --> 00:17:21.720 It's easy for us who may have never had a wooden object or a metal object that we prayed to. 00:17:21.720 --> 00:17:22.720 Maybe we've never done that. 00:17:22.720 --> 00:17:25.920 But think about your own former life.
