A short horror story fictional audio podcast where in each episode the Shadow Dweller spins a new tale of horror, creepy stories and twisted tales to keep you company until you are swallowed by the Abyss.
Into the Abyss
Season 2. Episode 5. It's About Time
Time is a river - relentless and unstoppable until
one man dares to defy it.
But what if you could swim
against the current? What
if you could undo the
moment that shattered
your world?
Daniel Hayes unlocks a radical
invention that lets him step
back into the past, driven
by the desperate hope of
rewriting fate.
But every second he meddles with destiny comes at a haunting
cost. Will changing one moment truly alter everything, or will time always reclaim what was lost?
But time is not so easily
rewritten. It does not
bend... it replaces.
How far would you go to fix
what was lost? And when
time pushes back... what
will it take from you
instead?

Hello my friends, let me know what you thought about this episode.
This episode contains mature language in adult situations.
SPEAKER_07:Listener discussion.
SPEAKER_04:Hello, my friend. How is it that you stumbled into my cabin's miss? I am ancient. I am forever. I am a chain down here for millennial. I can assure you of that. Sooner or later, you all come here. Your dark thoughts brought you here. And for that, you are forever trapped down here.
SPEAKER_05:Please, please let me go. I have a family. I don't know how I got here or what I'm doing. Whatever your horror place is, I'm sorry. Please, I can't see it's so dark.
SPEAKER_04:Before your suffering begins, I will tell you a tale to pass the time. Short stories of horror. Tiny tales of the creepy.
SPEAKER_05:Please just let me go.
SPEAKER_04:Where are my madness? I am a shadow dweller. Here to keep you company until the abyss swallows you whole. I've been here for eons and collected stories that I passed down to you before the darkness takes you. This little ditty called.
SPEAKER_02:Time is a river. But what if you could swim against the current? What if in your desperation you tried to change what should never be changed? The past doesn't like to be altered. Tonight, we tell the story of Daniel Hayes. And the horrors that waited for him in the past, as well as in the present.
SPEAKER_03:Just one jump. Just one. I can fix it this time. Make everything right. I know what to do now. I know where it went wrong. I know I can push the outcome in a different direction. Change it for good. I gotta try.
SPEAKER_02:Daniel Hayes did the impossible. What used to be science fiction is now science fact. He had not only invented the technology, but the prototype was more like a smartwatch. If his tech ever got into the wrong hands, it would be history changing, literally. He had built a time machine. No DeLorean, Marty, and Doc Brown. Not like the Terminator. Not for glory, not for power, but for regret. A year ago, his girlfriend Emily had been taken from him in a brutal accident. And tonight, he would bring her back. He would go back to that night and place and warn her, intervene, give the timeline a little nudge in a different direction. His equipment and laptop powered up. He set the time and date into his watch. But he could only jump back to the past one hour before the accident. He wasn't able to calculate any further back than that. Would the butterfly effect actually create alternate timelines? He didn't care as long as he could have his Emily back. Who wouldn't turn back the hands of time to save as a loved one? Go back and warn your grandma to quit smoking to erase the years of throat cancer she'll go through. Or go back to your childhood one hour before your favorite dog got hit by that car. Speed off without stopping. He also wasn't able to jump forward in time. The watch also was bioset to him and only him. It also kept him connected to the present while being able to go back to the past. Another rule was that he could only remain in the past for one hour, no more, no less. Then automatically, he would be pulled back to his time. The present. Right now. Time travel is nothing like you think it is. It's like rewinding your favorite part in a movie and pressing repeat. It gets to a certain point and starts over. You know exactly what is coming when and where. Everything is almost like a play. You have everything memorized, word for word. What kind of dog passes you? Or the guy walking looking down at his phone and him stepping in that same pile of dog shit 35 times. No matter how little you push time, it always seems to inevitably catch up and write itself. Daniel remembers the first time jumping. He was in his lab in the basement. Monitors, cables, wires, hooked up to electromagnetic coils. By making a smaller version of the Hydron Collider, it created a megahertz frequency, which created a time bubble, if you will, a wormhole to send him to the past. He arrived one hour before she was to be hit by the drunk driver. He couldn't believe it. The smells, people, and the surroundings felt so real because it was real. He had done it, and time traveled. He had to make it to our hole in the wall bar. That was twelve blocks away.
SPEAKER_03:On the night she dies, I didn't go with her that night. I had to work early. Besides, it was a girl's night out. I ran until my lungs burst. At 10:15, she'd come stumbling out of that bar to have a cigarette. Then she would be standing on the curb, getting ready to text me. She didn't notice the car until it was too late. A car jumped the road where she was and pinned her to a lamppost. She managed to stay alive for another 30 minutes. By the time the ambulance got there, it was too late. Emily! Emily, wait!
SPEAKER_01:Daniel, what are you doing here?
SPEAKER_03:You can't go that way! The car's coming! You need to get out of there!
SPEAKER_01:Daniel, what the fuck? You're acting weird. Are you drunk?
SPEAKER_02:Everything started to look blurry as an alarm started beeping from his watch. No! No, no, no! He was back at the lab in his basement. As the rippling around him started to fade, he checked the time. July 18th, 2025. 9 o'clock p.m. He had only been gone for seconds in this time, but an hour in the past. He had changed the past just by being at the bar right before she got hit by the car. But she got hit anyway. But time does not forgive. It does not forget. It only replaces.
SPEAKER_03:What the hell happened? God damn it, I was there to warn her, and she still died. Fuck!
SPEAKER_02:Daniel wanted to go back again. Had to go back again and give time another poke. Another chance. Another jump. He set the time dial again. This time he would save her differently. One hour before the accident, the time bubble brought him to the same spot. He checked his watch. He had exactly one hour to alter the chain of events that leads to her death. Before he's pulled back. This time Daniel rang her doorbell. She opened the door, surprised.
SPEAKER_03:Emily! I have to talk to you. I need to warn you about something. You're just going to have to trust me. Because it's going to sound crazy.
SPEAKER_01:Daniel? What are you doing here? I thought you were tired and have to get up early. You know I'm getting ready to go out with the girls. It's been a long week, and I fucking need a drink. Why do you look so different? Are you wearing a wig? Daniel. What's going on? Since when do you suddenly have long hair?
SPEAKER_03:Don't worry about that. That's not important. Just trust me. Don't go to the nook tonight. Please.
SPEAKER_01:What are you talking about? You know I have plans with the girls. We're gonna have some drinks. It'll be okay.
SPEAKER_03:Just promise me. I have a bad feeling that something bad is going to happen to you at the bar.
SPEAKER_01:Dude, what's the matter with you? You're acting strange. Why the fuck are you tripping?
SPEAKER_03:Promise me, Em. God damn it. Say you'll stay home.
SPEAKER_01:Okay, Jesus Christ, you're acting like a fucking dick. Okay, I won't. Just go home and leave me alone.
SPEAKER_02:Emily didn't go to the bar. She stayed home. Daniel was outside the bar waiting to see if Emily showed up anyway. She didn't. But that same car came down the road, right on cue. It hopped the curb and smashed into the lamp. Some people came out. Said most of the same things. Except the said nothing about the poor girl who was pinned between the car and the post. Now they said someone called 911. This guy is bleeding pretty bad. Emily fell asleep on the couch. She had been drinking glasses of wine and passed out. Little did she know a gas leak had been building for hours, filling up all her rooms in the house. She woke up and smelt gas. Just as she opened the front door, the air conditioner kicked on, causing a spark to ignite the gas and blew her and the kitchen sky high. Daniel heard the explosion a few blocks away. He heard sirens heading in that direction and had a gut feeling that they were going to Em's house. By the time he got there, her house was engulfed in flames. Police and the EMs had the area blocked off. They had a sheet covering a body that lay on a stretcher. He ran up to it and pulled the sheet back. Police tried to stop him. Her face. What was left of her face was a bloody mess. He knew it was her. No, no, no! Time does not alter. It does not bend to will. It only finds another way. A ripping pop is heard as he's pulled back to the now, his alarm beeping as he looks around at his monitors in his basement.
SPEAKER_03:No matter what I do, she dies. She always dies. Just one jump. Just one. I can fix it this time. Make everything right. I know what to do now. I know where it went wrong. I know I can push the outcome in a different direction. Change it for good. I gotta try.
SPEAKER_02:The equipment powers up again as he sets the alarm. He can smell the electric magnetic particles in the air. The warbling of the mini collider. The time bubble was forming. A flash of white light filled the basement. He was back again just before the accident. This time something was a bit different. He had a buzz, and it was him who was having a brose night out. This isn't right. Something is wrong. Daniel said to himself. Daniel ordered another round and went to step outside to smoke a cigarette. He stumbled out of the bar and onto the sidewalk. He pulled his phone out and was going to text Emily. He took a new port out of the box and lit one. From across the street, he saw Emily.
SPEAKER_01:Daniel, hey Daniel, wait, wait.
SPEAKER_02:Emily, what are you doing here?
SPEAKER_01:You can't go that way, the car.
SPEAKER_02:Just at that moment, Daniel stumbles a bit and from nowhere is plowed into the post, pinning him against it. The car's airbag deployed and the windshield was shattered. The driver lay unconscious. People started to come out and check out the scene. That poor guy. Someone called 911. Hurry! Emily made it over to Daniel and held his hand. Tears were filling up her eyes.
SPEAKER_01:It's not fair. No matter what I do, he dies. He always dies. Even if I push it a little to change the outcome, it somehow writes itself in the end.
SPEAKER_02:A beeping alarm went off on her watch. She was back at the lab in the basement. As the rippling around her started to fade. She checked the time. July 18th, 2025. 9 o'clock p.m. Emily dried the tears on her sleeve. She checked her computer and gear. Reset the alarm on her watch. The smell of electric magnetic particles fills the room. A warbling sound began bouncing around as a bubble started to form.
SPEAKER_00:Just one jump. Just one. I can fix it this time. Make everything right. I know what to do now. I know where it went wrong. I know I can push the outcome in a different direction. Change it for good. I gotta try. I know I can save him. I can warn him.
SPEAKER_02:Emily saw a flash of white light fill the room as she heard a popping sound, and that's when she felt the pull.
SPEAKER_04:Your dark thoughts always lead you to me.
SPEAKER_06:So my friends, until next time, I look forward to taste your fear.
