Listener discretion is at last.

unknown:

Hello, my friend.

SPEAKER_08:

And how is it that you stumbled into my calves, the abyss? I am ancient. I am forever. And I am a change out of here. I am the shadow to earth. I've been here for years and collecting stories. I will tell you the tale to pass the time. Short stories of horror. Tiny tales of the creepy. I will assure you by the end you'll be screaming with madness. Morbid morsels is a new chapter of terror. A shorter tale of madness. To let's just say carry your tremendous suffering over to the longer, fuller episodes. Your torment, endless suffering has helped me go strong. To reunite my brothers once again to open the portal for here, the nether realm to your work. To release darkness and chaos upon all mankind. We have grown stronger by passing these tales of madness on to you. Not only will we feast on your souls, but we will unleash hell on earth. We'll be seeking new, unfortunate souls to torment, new chapters of fear, tales of the unbelievable, and more skin to cool episodes. Remember, your dark thoughts lead you to me. I won't have to find you. It will be you that seeks me out.

SPEAKER_02:

This is your captain, Chris Taylor speaking. I hope you all are enjoying your flight tonight with us on United Airlines. It looks like we may be in for a little bumpy weather as we try and make it out around this approaching storm. Nothing to worry about, ladies and gentlemen, just might experience just a little turbulence and some thunder. But it looks like we should still be on time for a 10 p.m. landing at O'Hara International. So sit back, relax, grab some sleep, or enjoy our in-flight movie Twilight Zone the movie.

SPEAKER_01:

Just then, a big bolt of lightning struck off in the distance, followed by a loud crack of thunder that shook the plane. The passengers looked around at each other with unease. Some nervous laughter could be heard from a few people. Captain Chris Taylor and his co-pilot Alec Ford shielded their eyes as the flash temporarily blinded them.

SPEAKER_09:

God damn, that scared the shit out of me.

SPEAKER_02:

Ladies and gentlemen, just want everyone to know everything is okay and nothing to be alarmed over. We have flown through a pocket close to the lightning, which is why you all felt a shake.

SPEAKER_10:

This is gonna sound crazy. Maybe I'm just tired, but I could have sworn that I saw something in that bolt of lightning. Some sort of hell, I don't know. Something flying in the storm. Yeah, you're probably right.

SPEAKER_01:

Another flash of lightning and a sonic boom of thunder close enough to the plane that this time shook it so hard that all the above compartments came open and everything shot out. Then something struck engine number four, and the plane lost altitude for a bit as fire and smoke emerged into the stormy sky. This time, the passengers screamed, and a few were tossed from their seats. Captain Chris took the controls with both hands and pulled up. Alec looked out the window to catch a glimpse of something on the wing, tearing the fuses and wires out. A grotesque figure that looked like what you'd describe as a gargoyle of some sort. Long talons, rows of razor-sharp teeth, black eyes, and webbed wings of it was tearing the engine apart.

SPEAKER_09:

Holy shit, I fucking see. I don't know what I'm looking at. You were right.

SPEAKER_01:

Screams could be heard coming from the back of the plane as the pilots tried to regain their altitude. The creature looked at both men as it leaped to the windshield of the jet liner, ripping through the glass and gutting Captain Taylor. His hands went to his stomach as blood stained his shirt. Now it was Alex's turn. The thing pounced on him and slashed his throat. Blood splattered against the control panel. Alex spit a mouthful of a thick, reddish goof on the shattered wind sheet. The abomination began destroying the controls, causing them to catch fire. There were alarms and warning lights going off in the puppet, pounding on the pilot's door coming from the other side. Louder this time. The plane began to quickly tilt down as it picked up speed. Parts began breaking off in pieces and chunks. One man got sucked out a hole in the side of the jet. The creature crawled out the crashing plane and pulled into the darkness. The plane continued to plummet towards the ocean. Fire and smoke streaked the sky like a meteor. The precinct hummed with life. Mundane, unbroken. Detective John Casey hunched over his cluttered desk, pen scratching against paper. His wastebasket was full of empty cigarette boxes and coffee cups. He was already on his fifth cup and already down half a pack. Stacks of case files covered his desk with different colored sticky notes and non-legible writing scribbled on them. Outside, the storm growled, rolling closer. One, thunder was so loud that Detective Casey jumped. No one noticed the unnatural stillness creeping in alongside the thunder.

SPEAKER_05:

Damn storm's gonna kill the power. Can't wait for a blackout. The whole city's gonna freak the fuck out if that happens.

SPEAKER_03:

Power lines must be acting up again. I hope it holds up. Some transformers and lines must be down due to the storm. I've seen a lot in the Midwest growing up, and this is going to be pretty bad. Wind, rain, lightning strikes, all the best elements coming together for one hell of a shit show.

SPEAKER_01:

His partner Susan Wright said, matter-of-factually, a flash illuminates the room. For a moment, a grotesque figure looms in the shadows of the now dimly lit office. Jagged, shifting its limbs, bending unnaturally, tucking its wings behind its back, its razor-sharp teeth glistening with blood and saliva.

SPEAKER_05:

Susan, did you see that?

SPEAKER_03:

What? You alright, John? You look like you've seen a ghost.

SPEAKER_05:

It's not a ghost. Something in the room for a sec when the lightning just struck. It wasn't human.

SPEAKER_03:

Maybe lay off the coffee for a bit. How much sleep have you gotten in the last few days? You look like shit partner. And I say that with love. You've been wearing yourself thin over these files and cases.

SPEAKER_01:

Then the first call came in. A patrol car found on the highway, the officers inside torn apart, bodies fused with scorched metal. Blood soaked the interior of the car. There were chunks and body parts scattered about the patrol car. Red and blue lights strobe the highway as flares burned bright. Emergency vehicles had the area blocked off so that authorities can investigate the scene. The storm hadn't just brought rain, it had brought death.

SPEAKER_03:

So we're really doing this. Chasing monsters in a storm? I should have gone to law school.

SPEAKER_05:

The patterns don't lie. Susan, every storm, every missing person, the same areas, the same anomalies. It's stalking the lightning.

SPEAKER_03:

Is that normal?

SPEAKER_05:

Nothing about this is normal.

SPEAKER_01:

John and Susan ran to the patrol car getting soaked by the rain. Another crack of lightning struck nearby. John started the car and they drove away. Another bolt of lightning lit up the sky. This time they both heard something on the roof. The creature, more nightmare than flesh, materialized for seconds with each flash. Translucent, its sinewy body rippled with tendrils of shifting mass. Hollow, glowing eyes locked onto them as its talons carved through steel roof like butter.

SPEAKER_03:

Drive, John, drive, goddammit!

SPEAKER_01:

It's on the fucking roof of the car. John began scrolling on the road, trying to shake the creature off. His late model Ford hit a patch of standing water and began to hydroplane. It smashed the passenger's front window, and Susan sprayed in broken glass. It reached its arm through the window, grabbing a handful of hair and ripping it from Susan's head. Susan was screaming hysterically now. As John regained control of the car, the thing let Susan go and launched its wings as it flew in front of our headlights. Then the monster flew straight up into the storm.

SPEAKER_05:

You okay? How bad is it?

SPEAKER_04:

Oh my shit! That was close. Yeah, I'm all right. Just got my hair and a bit of scalp.

SPEAKER_01:

John lit a cigarette, then another, and passed it to his partner. She took it in her shaky hands.

SPEAKER_05:

I think I know where it might attack next.

SPEAKER_01:

They pulled up to a power station. The storm is at its peak with cold, stingy rain and thunder cracking like the whip of the gods. They parked the car and entered the front door to the station. The lights were flickering in and out, then cut out completely. John and Susan picked up a flashlight each in one hand and their guns in the other. They were both shining the lights in different rooms and offices. Then the light hit a bloody body, wearing a hard hat, with his intestines sprawled out.

SPEAKER_03:

That wasn't the wind.

SPEAKER_05:

It's feeding.

SPEAKER_03:

I don't see it, but I can feel it, like it's breathing down my neck.

SPEAKER_05:

Stay close. When the lightning strikes again, aim for the chest if it has one.

SPEAKER_01:

It was a harbinger of destruction, its form twisting with the storm's fury. Jagged claws scraped walls, its gaping maw revealing serrated teeth, dripping with viscous, black ecor.

SPEAKER_03:

It's not going down, John. What the hell is this thing?

SPEAKER_01:

Keep firing. Aim where it's solid. The creature flickers, revealing an alien, crystalline heart. John fires, a sickening, squelching impact as the heart shatters. The creature spasmed violently. Its form splintered into shards of light and shadow, letting out one final unearthly scream before collapsing into a pool of slime. The storm stilled, as though exhaling.

SPEAKER_03:

You weren't kidding. A fucking monster in the lightning. What do we even put in the report? I don't know about you, partner, but I need a goddamn drink. I'm buying.

SPEAKER_05:

We don't. No one would believe it, and they'd lock us up in the nut house and throw away the key. Make it a lot of drinks.

SPEAKER_01:

As the detectives got into the squad car, they both lit a cigarette. Susan turned on the radio for some tunes to listen to. Three long beeps blasted over the speakers.

SPEAKER_00:

National Weather Services issued a severe thunderstorm with possibility of heavy rain, thunder, and lightning. Hail, an extreme wind, gusts sustainable at 60-70 miles per hour. The city of Charlottesville will be in the direct path of the storm. The storm is traveling at 40 miles per hour to reach the city in a few hours. Please take cover and stay away from windows and objects that can become flying debris. Please go to a basement or other safe place when a storm hits. Get flashlights, candles, water, a battery-powered radio in case power and internet are down.

SPEAKER_05:

Shit, that's only an hour away. We can make it there in time to find it and stop it. Before it starts up, it's feeding frenzy again.

SPEAKER_03:

You know this is fucking crazy, right? But I agree, we're the only ones who knows what we're dealing with, not to mention how to stop it. Rain check on the shots, partner?

SPEAKER_01:

John whipped the car around and jumped onto the 95 South Exit, towards Charlottesville, North Carolina. He flicked his butt out the window and took a sip from his coffee cup. They headed towards the storm on the darkened highway, except for a light post every so often. A flash of lightning lit up the night sky, followed by a boom of thunder. Susan noticed that the hairs on their arms were standing up. John turned the radio to another station as some metal band began rocking out on the car's speakers.

SPEAKER_08:

Your dark thoughts always lead you to me. So, my friends, until next time, I look forward to tasting your fear.
