I won't have to find you. It will be you that seeks me out.
SPEAKER_00:Antarctica Base 33 Research Lab. The howling wind raged outside as the bitter cold cut your face. Minus 30 degrees on a good day. Four researchers and scientists planned on taking samples below the frozen ice to see if life can live without sunlight to study microbial life and its ability to adapt and thrive in a sub-zero climate. They were using an ice drill. This worked by melting snow in a container and heating it up. Then, at the other end, a hose melts the ice deeper and deeper. The team was made up of scientists on the top of their fields. Dr. Evelyn Carter, lead researcher, Dr. James O'Malley, a paleontologist. Charlie West was a drill technician. Dr. Leonard Hayes, geologist. The drill bit was almost through the ice. They had been drilling for days, and they were close to puching through. All their research and LIDA equipment showed that there was a cavern under the ice. A place uninhabitable by life, and no humans have ever explored, or maybe not for thousands of years. The samples they would find and run tests on could unlock potential cures for diseases. We're almost through. God damn, this ice is thick as hell.
SPEAKER_08:Keep it steady. We don't know what's beneath us.
SPEAKER_01:After all this time, nothing but more ice and rock, but maybe, just maybe we'll find something extraordinary.
SPEAKER_02:Or there's the possibility of finding nothing at all. What could survive without any sunlight at these depths? Also, we have to be careful not to contaminate any samples we get.
SPEAKER_00:Suddenly the drill breaks through. A deep echoing crack fills the air, followed by a rush of freezing air from below.
SPEAKER_03:Shit, we broke through.
SPEAKER_08:Everyone back! We don't know how stable this is.
SPEAKER_00:They all slowly repelled down into the darkness. After what felt like forever, their feet hit bottom. Their helmet lights pierced the blackness as they looked around.
SPEAKER_01:The walls, they're smooth.
SPEAKER_02:Underwater rivers must have been carving these out for millions of years. Look at these formations. There's a lake, an actual lake under who are miles below the Arctic ice. It could be teeming with microbial life.
SPEAKER_08:We did it, team. The samples we find might be able to cure diseases or to help come up with new medicines.
SPEAKER_01:Did you hear that? No, what did you hear?
SPEAKER_02:It's probably just water dripping and echoing through the cave.
SPEAKER_08:Okay, team, let's get our samples, then head back to the surface and collect all our data. Even though this is exciting, I'm getting a creepy feeling like we're being watched.
SPEAKER_00:Erratic footsteps could be heard on the ice. A chittering sound echoed in the shadows.
SPEAKER_01:Jesus, what is that? Whatever it is, it's moving fast.
SPEAKER_00:A shadow lunges from the darkness and takes Charlie as his screams echo off the cavern walls. It took Charlie.
SPEAKER_02:It just dragged him away. We're not alone down here.
SPEAKER_08:Whatever it is has had to have adapted over a million years. Learn to hunt without eyesight to survive down here below the Arctic. It could be they hunt by scent, or maybe even sound. We have to move, slow and silent.
SPEAKER_01:This is insane. Nothing can live down here. It's not possible.
SPEAKER_00:A grotesque bony arm with razor-sharp claws tore a slash in Dr. Hayes' back. He let loose a blood-curdling scream as he disappeared into the blackness. Dr. Carter and Dr. O'Malley are running back to where they first entered the cave. They were going to climb back up. Their gear was still attached to the ice wall. All they had to do was hook the rope through the pulley and pull themselves back up the hole and to the research lab. The creatures shrieked behind them, scuttling in the darkness and got closer to Carter and O'Malley.
SPEAKER_02:We're almost there, Dr. Carter.
SPEAKER_00:The scientists were almost at the entrance as two of the creatures climbed on top of Dr. O'Malley from the sides of the cavern. Their teeth found his face as their claws tore through his flesh. His body convulsed as his blood soaked into the ice. The sound of tearing flesh and bones snapping rang out in her ears. O'Malley stopped screaming. Dr. Carter reaches a ladder, scrambling up as fast as she can. Her heart feels like it's going to explode in her chest. She slams the hatch to the lab shut, locking it. The research didn't matter. Her co-workers were all dead. She was happy to make it out alive.
SPEAKER_08:This is Dr. Evelyn Carter. If anyone finds this, we were wrong. They're dead. All of them are dead. Dr. O'Malley, Dr. Hayes, and Dr. West. We found something buried beneath the ice, or something found us. Some kind of subterrane creature that has evolved and adapted. It was just waiting down there in the darkness. Waiting to be discovered. Waiting to feed.
SPEAKER_00:Dr. Carter heard a low chickering come from behind her. She froze in fear with her heart pounding in her chest.
SPEAKER_08:Inside. Don't breathe. Just inside. You can wait this moment. You've got to be.
