SPEAKER_04:

This episode contains mature language and adult situations. Listener discretion is at last.

SPEAKER_03:

Hello, my friend. How is it that you stumble into my calves, VS? I am ancient. I am forever. I am an ancient I am the shadow together. I've been here for years in collective stories. I will tell you the tales past the time. Short stories of horror. Tiny tales of creeping. I will assure you by the end you'll be screaming with madness. Morbid Morsels is a new chapter of terror. A shorter tale of madness. To let's just say carry your tremendous suffering over to the longer, fuller episodes. Your torment endless suffering has helped me go strong. To reunite my brothers once again to here. Another realm to your toese darkness and chaos upon all mankind. We have grown stronger by passing these tears of madness onto you. Not only will we feast on your souls, but we will unleash hell on earth. New chapters of fear.

SPEAKER_06:

Tomorrow was not just another day. It was his birthday. No longer a little kid. He was going to become a teenager.

SPEAKER_00:

April 19th. 13 and 13 minutes. No sign of mom or dad. Again. Work, work, work. That's all they do. Probably even forgot what day it is. They're always so busy and don't even bother trying to spend time with me. They treat me like I'm invisible. Maybe it's a surprise. Like, they're pretending they'll forget. But I wake up tomorrow and boom! Balloons, cake, presents, pancakes with lots of maple syrup. Uh, too loud. 13. I'm officially a man. Let's see what they planned.

SPEAKER_06:

Jake ran down the stairs, taking two at a time until he landed on the floor with a loud thud.

SPEAKER_00:

Mom? Dad? Weird. No cake. No card. No note. Maybe. Maybe they went out to pick something up.

SPEAKER_06:

After no sign of any birthday breakfast, no card, Jake decided to make a bowl of cereal, pack his lunch, and go to school before running late again. He was sure they'd announce his birthday over the intercom during the morning news, and all the other kids in his grade, who also had birthdays. He waited until the end, and was sure he was going to be called last. It was right after Cindy Mullins. But the bell just rang, and everyone just got up, gathered their backpacks and laptops, and went to their next class. Jake took the bus home and walked into the house. He called for his mom and dad, but nobody answered. He saw their note on the front on the refrigerator door, which simply said that they'd both be working late again and he could have leftovers. Jake reheated his dinner as he scrolled through TikTok, slowly just moving his food around his plate. He really wasn't very hungry. He cleaned up and went upstairs to get ready for bed. Jake got in bed and pulled the covers over his head. His eyes started swelling up with tears.

SPEAKER_00:

I didn't have to deal with any of them. No parents, no bullies, no one. Just me. Alone forever. Yeah. That'd be perfect. Then I'd do whatever I wanted when I wanted to. That's my birthday wish. What a crappy birthday.

SPEAKER_06:

And with that, he cried himself to sleep. Jake slept in till 9 a.m. since it was Saturday, and he didn't have shit to do. He called out for his parents. No answer, no surprise. He got dressed, went to the garage, and got out his bike. Jake rode his bike down the street as he turned up the volume on his headphones. Sabotage by the Beastie Boys was blaring in his ears. He pedaled fast, the wind blowing, the sun warming his face. As he biked, he began to notice that he wasn't seeing anyone outside. Nobody was cutting their grass or washing their cars. He also noticed that there were no kids playing or people walking their dogs. Usually by this time on Saturday morning, there are lots of people enjoying their day. Jake got off his bike and pushed the kickstand with his black converse.

SPEAKER_00:

Okay. Where is everyone? No birds singing, no dogs barking. This is just fucking weird. Mrs. Hallie's porch lights are still on, but no sign of her. It's like they all vanished. Okay, Jake. Maybe it's a holiday. A town parade or something? They all have to be somewhere. Where the hell is everybody?

SPEAKER_06:

Jake rode his bike downtown to the local mall. He still didn't see anyone. The cars were still in the parking lot, but no people in them. Shopping bags lay on the ground as the wind kicked up, blowing a Coca-Cola can down the street. The mall and stores were deserted. The only sound he could hear was his feet echoing on the mall floor. The mall escalator hummed endlessly, with no one riding it. Jake called out. He said hello and waited for an answer. He made his way to an empty arcade room. This place was always slamming on Saturday mornings. Video games rang out, sirens, and music filled the room. Jake walked behind the counter and filled a big soda cup up with game tokens and went straight for the tabletop Miss Pac-Man and plopped a quarter in. He played pinball, mini golf. There were no lines, no waiting, no other screaming kids. This was awesome, he thought.

SPEAKER_00:

No alarms. No cops to say I'm stealing. I can have whatever I want, whenever I want. I think I really am alone. Is this because of what I wished? I'm the king of the world. I'm eating every type of cereal at once. Been three days, I think. I can stay up as late as I want. No bedtime, no school, no rules. I haven't seen the sun in a while. It's always cloudy now. But who cares? The sun just makes it hot out. This is the best birthday wish ever. Who needs anyone anyway?

SPEAKER_06:

It's now been about one month since Jake's birthday wish. Still no people, no animals. He decided to go to the store to stock up on more Pop Tarts, pepperoni hot pockets, soda, and candy.

SPEAKER_00:

No one to tell me what to do, no one to pick on me, but I hear things now, at least I think I do. Like whispers. Once I turned around, I swear someone was there. Another person. Waving to me, almost thought it looked like a kid. I waved back and said, Hey you, but then it was gone.

SPEAKER_06:

Six months have now passed, and Jake is still alone. He grew tired of eating anything he wanted. His video games were boring and no interesting movies to watch.

SPEAKER_00:

I thought I saw my mom the other day, just for a second, in the corner of the library. I ran toward her. She turned around and she didn't have a face. I think I'm going crazy. Losing my goddamn mind. I can't be the only one here. There's got to be someone else.

SPEAKER_06:

Big sat on the rusted swing at the park and slowly swung back and forth. There was no crickets chirping, no birds. Just a stillness.

SPEAKER_00:

I don't want to be alone anymore. Please, I didn't mean it. Please bring them back. I'll be better. I won't complain. I'll take the yelling. I'll take the bullies. I'll even settle with mom and dad working a lot. Just let me hear another voice again. I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_06:

Jake heard a voice right next to him.

SPEAKER_00:

Who's there? Hello? Wait, wait, who are you? I didn't mean it.

unknown:

You're ours. You're going to live to be a whole man alone until you die. You'll go back.

SPEAKER_01:

You won't be able to tell the difference between what is always real.

SPEAKER_02:

April. Something I think. Today's my 18th birthday. I don't know what day it is anymore. I stopped counting. The sky stays gray now. The clocks don't move. Nothing grows. No animals. Still no people. I'm so tired of being alone. I saw my reflection today. It wasn't me. I've stopped showering and brushing my teeth. Haven't shaved in years. My eyes were bloodshot. Haven't been sleeping lately. My supplies are running low. Down to canned goods and dry stuff. With nobody to run the power and water, no electricity. So you can't keep your food refrigerated. I wish I never had a fucking birthday. I wish I was never born.

SPEAKER_06:

Just then Jake felt a cold breeze on his face. It sent chills down his spine. He heard a whisper in his ear again, and it said, Your wish has been cracked, Jake.

unknown:

Happy birthday.

SPEAKER_06:

Jake then hunched over in pain. His head began to throb, and his insides felt like they were on fire. He looked at his hand which started looking transparent. He could actually see through his hand and saw the floor through it.

SPEAKER_02:

hurts, what's happening here? This isn't what I wanted. I take it back.

SPEAKER_06:

Then his hand disappeared entirely, followed by his feet working its way past his legs. He looked down and was seeing nothing. He began screaming. His whole body was just erasing itself. Now his torso was gone. Now just Jake's head was left. A tear ran down his cheek. Then his face. He was still screaming, and then nothing. That's the moment Jake Roth winked out of existence.

SPEAKER_03:

Oh, poor little Jake. All he wanted to do was have a typical teenage birthday, cake and ice cream, presents, and friends to celebrate it with. But he wished to be alone and his wish was granted. So my friends, be careful for what you wish for. Because if something or someone hears you, you might just get your wish, and there's always a price to pay. So my friends, until next time, I look forward to taste. You have been listening to Into the Abyss Podcast Morbid Morsels.
