Still Showing: The 50th Episode
Connor and Jordan celebrate 50 episodes of 2nd Showing by rehashing controversial takes, reading audience comments, and ranking the classics from the first four seasons. Here's to 50 more!
All right, how are we starting this off? I'm so excited. I'm excited too. You guys, it's our 50th episode. Okay, 5-0. The big 5-0 over the hill. 50 episodes. This is our midlife crisis. Oh, I feel like it's a crisis. I feel like it's a crisis of fabulous, incredible work. I feel like it's a recognition of 49 fucking insane movies watched. I feel like it is labor. Our labor. 49 episodes. It's not our labor. I'm going to take that back. It's also not 49 movies because we've done three recap episodes. So it's 46 movies. Oh my god, it's 46 movies. That's still insane. That's a lot of movies, you guys. How many good ones? Six? Yeah, and that's part of the ride. And if you've been with us for this long, holy shit, you guys. You know, I would say there's been more good movies than I thought there were going to be when we started. I've been pleasantly surprised on several occasions, I would say. We've had so much fun and It's a lot of work. And if you're listening every week, you know that we are just, we're breaking a sweat. We're saying that we need to bring this to the masses. Like, like the fans won't stop. We'll never stop begging for more content. Yeah. And we're here to deliver. Actually, like you guys were lost and then we found you in the dark. We found you. We found you. Don't worry. Welcome back. 50 episodes. This is a very special episode. We have a lot planned for you guys and we're actually downright giddy to get into it. First of all, a little background on us. Yeah, we asked you guys what you wanted to hear from the 50th episode, and a lot of people said they wanted to hear about us. Oh my god, can you believe? I can't believe. I know us, and you guys don't want to hear that much. It makes perfect sense to me. We actually are just endlessly fascinating. If you listen, you know where we're from. We grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, correctly pronounced Louisville, but... Not everyone knows that, you know? Well, if you listen to this podcast, you do, because we had the 20-minute rant about it in the Elizabethtown episode. I'm two years older than Jordan. I was born in 1992. Jay was born in 94. So we're pretty young for a lot of these titles. We have an older sibling. Shout out to Morgan. Who I think was bringing a lot of them into that. Yes. And I think if you have an older sibling, you can probably relate that you're going to get a little pieces of the generation prior based on what they watch. Because you're emulating. You're always looking up whatever. Jordan obviously obsessed with me. I was her idol. She just wanted to be exactly like me. Which listeners can understand. I think you can tell from the podcast. But... It's not very many years apart. So it really is like major, major overlap in what we watched. It was. Also, it's just like, you know what I mean? It was the 90s. There was one TV. There was one house. We were in the same house watching the same content. Yeah. OK, so I when we started this podcast was living in Los Angeles and Jay was living here in New York, had been for a few years. Do you guys remember the pandemic? Yeah, that's what I was going to say is like we didn't release the podcast until about two years after we like concepted it and started recording. So like you may not know this, but it was originally concepted to be like, like we're stuck indoors, like a pandemic podcast. It was a COVID baby. It was literally a COVID baby. Our podcast was a COVID baby. Because she was in LA and I was in New York and we truly were like, you can't talk to anybody else and we aren't going to be able to see each other for who knows how long. And you just ran out of content to watch is the truth. Like it was just like we did Tiger King. We did Outer Banks. Like what are we going to watch? but also it was like I don't have anything to do at night like I'm stuck in my apartment I'm like looking at these four walls and I need something to look forward to and we were like no one is talking about this subset of stuff from when we were kids and there are like shout out to the other podcasts that we're talking about Mary Kate and Ashley our first season and our arguably most beloved season we'll get into it and we were like let's talk about Mary Kate and Ashley they're hard to find they're hard to stream but everyone remembers and so sure we had like run out of movies to watch yeah and we were like we need to really delve deep into our psyches and figure out like what we need to find out how to stream passport to paris yeah and we did not i speaking for myself i was like paris was the easy one to find yes i was like i don't want to do them as babies but once we got through the pre-teen years and there was a demand for the baby that's not even true i don't know if you remember i mean like I don't know if you remember this, but we did literally start with Double Double Toil and Trouble. It's the first one we watched. And that's actually why you didn't get the podcast until two years later. Because I was like, I can't. Because it was so bad and we were like, we need to take a break. From the Vault A year ago, June of 2024 to New York, and now we do the show together. Together. Together here in the city. It's so fun. It's much more. I don't know if you guys can tell the difference between when we were on different coasts and when we were together, but I feel like it is much more fun to do it together than it was to do it across different coasts. I think it's so much more fun. Yeah. And literally, you guys, sometimes we still do it remotely. If it's just like we'd be traveling, we'd be busy. Sometimes it'd be 8 p.m. But it's a lot more fun to record together more consistently for sure. So it's been... two and a half years almost it'll be three in March which is crazy 50 episodes I guess I know I guess so like this is what like they felt like when they did like five seasons of this CW show I'm picturing the Dawson's Creek 100 episode cake like right now I'm picturing Joshua Jackson wearing the photo of Meredith Monroe on his t-shirt because she was not invited to the 100th episode party and that's lore that like you just need to know maybe that's gonna end up on second thoughts who knows It's been two and a half years. We've done four seasons. A little bit of insight into selection. We knew we were going to do Freddie Prinze Jr. right after. a few episodes deep into Dual Star Diaries knew we wanted to do Friday Prince Jr. What's interesting about that is there was like a market shift sort of in like the audience being like rabid for content and we have to conclude it's because it was a boy. Like we were like he was the heartthrob of our childhood but it's like this content is for the girls and I think we're learning that with every season. What you guys like to see a little bit more. I also think like it's so interesting to do different headliners because it's like it really does change the entire vibe of the show each season. With Mary-Kate and Ashley, it was a lot of watching movies that were not good. And were not for kids. I mean, they were not for adults. That were for kids. That were not for adults. So it's like the shift to watching a really iconic, classic, cult fave. Like an in-theaters blockbuster. Yeah, movie was big. But I also think Freddie Prinze Jr. had... it wasn't all the same type of movie the way it was with Mary-Kate and Ashley and that made there be like a lot more peaks and valleys kind of in the content where it was like this movie is I know what you did last summer this is like a real fucking movie it's good like I want to talk about it I want to watch it versus like Wing Commander where you're like I don't want to watch it I don't want to talk about it and nobody else has seen it that's going to change like kind of the content that's coming out whereas Mary-Kate and Ashley content was all very cohesive it was its own universe it was a closed universe and I think with Freddie you get like she's all that yeah and you then can also discuss like the cultural moments that were happening at the time and like the famous celebrities and the Paul Walker of it all and Rachel Lee Cook and whoever the universe was so much bigger with Freddie yeah in a way that you don't really get with Mary-Kate and Ashley and that's fine I think Mary-Kate and Ashley is our closed little heart people responded to it so much I will say I have a soft spot for the Freddie season because the like recording equipment got better we got a little more like locked in with like the art and the promo and stuff so I will have a soft spot for Freddie I think the like biggest star we've done so far to me is season three Kirsten Dunst yeah for sure uh every single movie on the Kirsten Dunst season um is good iconic yeah but I do think there's been a little bit of a return to form with season four we've never done two headliners before it's mostly because like we didn't feel we could fill fill out a full season with either one of them and they both sort of occupied a similar timeline and listen this is all experimental like we're making this up and you guys we have more concept seasons planned that are even wackier than Mandy Mania but like it has been so fun to go back and forth and kind of get a break from one one of them. Oh, totally. But still be like we're very 2004. It's the very same timeline. It feels like kind of the same era. And I do feel like it's been a return to sort of the like made for kids girly pop teen teen movie genre of like the Mary-Kate and Ashley so it's like season four is very special to me too I love every movie on the list for season four yeah I feel like in terms of how we pick who the headliner is gonna be like it's truly not some like crazy equation it's really just like we think of movies that we loved as kids and then we were like and then we're like what do they have in common what do they have in common yeah who's in them and then once you remember that like she's all that has Freddie in it you're like wait a second also boys and girls has freddie prince jr in it like yeah let's watch this fucking movie and to be clear like it's not always going to be centered around like an actor or something. Like some of the thoughts that we have, like we can categorize movies from our childhood in a lot of different ways. You guys should be, our brains are big and we can come up with all kinds of categories for that. I mean, yeah. The only thing we're going to stay true to is movies. We want to watch movies. We watched as kids. Yeah. I mean like to me, what's rewarding about this whole format is this is what we thought this movie was about. We were wrong or we were right. And like, yeah, we were just, Yeah. Especially when you're talking about a time where those conversations just were not being had like they're being had now is just fun to like go back and analyze. It's just a blast. Or it's like not even that they weren't being had, but that the conclusions being drawn were wrong. Different. Yeah. We're just different. And I do think it is a specific time where we had more media than we've ever had before. Like when we were young, but we still only had like one channel of media. So everybody was still, we still had like monoculture, but like more of it than ever before. So it could really like shape you as a person, as evidenced by us as adults. Yeah. Anyone that knows us knows we know every single thing there is to know about everything oh yeah like and you guys can tell by the merch that we're releasing for the 50th episode but it's like six degrees of kevin bacon is like get me in front of a trivia team like i'll blow your mind i can name any actor in any movie yeah so true okay speaking of um we can talk a little bit about merch that's dropping it's the 50th episode you can go online and you can get key art from any of the four seasons on a t-shirt on a tote whatever if you guys want that sort of thing i like it on a tote personally for sure i'm gonna carry my stuff around it pick your favorite favorite season we know which one's your favorite season put it on a tote Connor does all of the key art she works really hard on it it's beautiful and you're gonna want it on your tote yeah for sure um you can also get our very special 50th episode merch that has the six degrees of separation of all of the headliners from all of the seasons and I'm gonna let Jay read out the connection because your mind is about to be blown I cannot believe we pulled it off with only one actor in between each headliner we've connected all of them like 20 minutes yeah and I I want you to know Connor tried to type it into ChatGVT and I got it before ChatGVT got it. No, honestly, I wanted a raise from the record that I tried to use ChatGVT for this because like, This is why they'll never replace human beings, because you can't teach a computer the things my brain knows from watching as much television. You can't beat me. I can't be beat. Absolutely. So let her rip. Here we go. The six degrees of second showing are Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are in Holiday in the Sun with Austin Nichols, who's in Wimbledon with Kirsten Dunst, who's in Strike. with Rachel Leigh Cook, who's in She's All That with Freddie Prinze Jr., who's in Boys and Girls with Amanda Detmer, who's in Big Fat Liar with Amanda Bynes, who's in Hairspray with Allison Janney, who's in How to Deal with Mandy Moore. Incredible. You guys, it is a closed universe. And like, if you're coming along with us, you're one of us, you're in the universe and you get it. And it can't be explained to people that aren't in the universe and they just need a deal. We're going to put that on a shirt. You can buy it Only people that know know. Only people that listen to the pod will get it. You can also, as always, get our favorite underrated Ashley comedian, Mary Kate. Dad caps are still available online. There's some past art. you know all that she's all that in a falafel hat a personal favorite we are going to talk a little bit about what's on the patreon this is going to be so funny because i was like we can post the unedited video of this and maybe we will there's going to be video clips from the episode we are filming ourselves record this can you believe something we truly hate to do and yet we're doing it for you for the 50th episode subscribe to our patreon you can watch this episode if you would like it's going to be there for you Our mom and dad are visiting this week. We're going to have a little celebration celebrating the 50th episode this Friday. Mm
SPEAKER_05:hmm.
SPEAKER_03:We are going to interview mom and dad about what they remember about us watching some of these movies. Those clips will be available on the Patreon. That should be a riot. It should be absolutely insane. As some of you guys know, the movie Elizabethtown from season three was filmed in our hometown. Our parents have a lot of memories of that. They also do listen to the show, which I hope does not shock you. That should give you some insight into how cool and hip our parents are. Actually, our biggest fans. They do listen to the show. Don't go on Spotify and count how many times our mom has commented. It's a lot. They're going to talk about their favorite episode of the show. I think they've already told us that we swear too much. They don't like that. Yeah, there have been some notes. But honestly, mostly positive. They're happy. Yeah. Lastly, we have been working hard on a playlist of all the needle drops over the course of the last four seasons or three and a half seasons. And frankly... It's a banger after banger. Yeah. It's 50 tracks for our 50 episodes. It's the best songs from the soundtracks of the movies. You guys know we really like flip out when there's like a really good needle drop. So we have created a playlist for you. You can get it on the Patreon. We are going to make it available to you. We are going to make it available to you. And you guys should definitely check it out because it rips. And then lastly, speaking of Freddy, you guys may have seen that they are remaking or coming out with a new I Know What You Did Last Summer. Yeah. We are going to do a review of that new movie. We're going to put it on the Patreon. You can subscribe and listen to it. But you can't hear it anywhere else. Nope. Yeah. We're going to make it similar to the third Spider-Man movie. We're going to make it available on Patreon. And you're going to be able to buy it if you don't want to subscribe. But you should subscribe because there's going to be a lot of other good stuff that we just named. Yes. And then lastly, last announcement before we get into all the fun stuff we have planned. We are going to host a little get together at the Rialto Grand in Brooklyn. On Franklin Ave. On Franklin Ave on Friday night. Yes. Friday, July 18th in Brooklyn. Come and say hey if you want. We've invited all our friends. Our parents will be there. We're just going to have a little sip, a little drink, a little toast to 50 episodes. We're excited, you guys. Honestly, if anyone shows up and walks up to us and is like, I listened to the show, I'll absolutely kiss you on the mouth. And that's a promise. That's a promise. OK, so. OK. Connor. put up some social polls oh yeah this is so I was so excited okay you guys like stay telling me what the fuck you think about what the fuck I think and it's crazy because I would not have expected I wanted any feedback on what I thought I'm rabid to know but I love when you guys like this is an insane take you guys are wild for this and it's like I'm willing to engage like one thing about me I'm not gonna like absolutely 10 toes down on basically anything but also I feel like I'm like I didn't say it and then send it to you for you to listen to because I didn't want to talk about it no no I invite you to be like, bitch, you're crazy for this one. And then I'll be like, actually, maybe, you know what I mean? So I did put up some polls. We wanted to know what you guys thought. The best season. We want to know what your favorite season is. 49% of you. Said season one. You guys are really MKNA heads. Yeah. And I won't lie. I am surprised to hear that a little bit. Like just because I personally feel like the quality has gotten a lot better as we've gone along. To go back and listen to them. It sounds like we're like in our closet at home and we are. I was in my closet for several episodes. And it's like the mics we were using were like absolutely bottom grade. Mostly it's like I get it. For all the reasons we talked about before, it's a closed universe. They're so nostalgic. And genuinely, a lot of them were really fun to watch. And I do kind of think you guys like it a little bit better when the movies aren't as good. Also, they're niche, I think. I think there's other podcasts out there where someone's like, let's rewatch She's All That. Sure. Yeah. It's kind of niche to be like, were you there? Which is what surprises me because I would think the other audiences maybe have wider appeal. Although it must be said, some of those Freddie Prinze Jr. movies are hard to find. Head over heels. Good luck streaming that. Yeah. Good luck. And you know what? For good reason. I mean, I'm not surprised. That's your favorite season. 20% of you said Kirsten Dunst. That was the runner up. That was a good season. 20% of you said this season that we're in, which is very exciting. We love that you're loving what we're doing now. Absolutely. Poor Freddie did get the least love. And as I mentioned, it's the pods for the girls. But we're going to get in. You guys have suggested some new people. And I was surprised to see boys on the list. But overwhelmingly, you guys want girl headliners. And who could blame you, frankly? it's about girlhood I do think it makes sense to me too that it's like that was our first that was the inception was Mary-Kate and Ashley like we're sisters they're sisters it's childhood like it is the purest like expression of the form also if you guys have been around since the beginning you might remember before we even launched the podcast we went sort of viral just dropping the list of movies we were gonna talk about we put a video up on TikTok before the episodes came out that were like we're launching this podcast these are the movies this is the time frame it happened in and it hit like almost a million views with absolutely no we didn't have any content for anyone to see we weren't anybody so people were hungry for the content that is clear and it's still the favorite season I think you guys show your love I think you guys really demand more MK&A content by buying underrated Ashley and comedian Mary Kate hats and then we'll know truly if we need to revisit I will say like I too would love more Mary Kate and Ashley content and you guys need to talk to Mary Kate and Ashley I know that has nothing to do with us That's what I'm saying. We're out of movies, fam. It has nothing to do with us. Make more movies. There is a show I want to shout out called They Thought I Was You. And they have nothing to do with us. They get tagged in our stuff sometimes. They haven't in a while now because we've moved away from Mary-Kate and Ashley. But if you're looking for really deep dive stuff... They are going crazy. They're finding every single magazine where their names were printed in. They're finding fan pages that have been taken down for 20 years. So go on it. We're happy to shoot them some listenership because they're doing work we're frankly just not doing. We're not willing to do. We're movies only on the main feed. We really are here to just talk our shit and have our own opinions. And we, if you listen, you know we're not big research heads. That couldn't be further from the truth about them. So get your fill over there. Yeah. Yeah. Two episodes ago, we did the She's the Man recap. And I think maybe it's just fresh in people's minds. Yeah, I am thinking that too. And it's so, so funny that honestly, I feel like when I listen back to that episode, it's just us being like, this is so fucking funny. This is so funny. This is such a good line. It was so funny. She's the movie people loved. Another fan favorite episode, I was not surprised, is Sucks to be Spidey, our Spider-Man to review. Because that is like... literally the best you guys ever made and I we had so much fun doing that episode too it's it's really nice to see that a lot of your all's favorite episodes are the episodes that we had the most yeah recording I will say passport to Paris from season one is my favorite oh my god that's such a good episode yeah and what is it called preteens with passports yeah and it's really short and fast and we recorded it together that was the first one we ever did together I flew out to LA yeah and it is so funny still to listen back to but The sort of honorable mentions, a couple that you guys said that weren't the top two, Holiday and the Slammer, which we hated that movie. We hated that movie. And it really took us by surprise. Yeah, yeah. I was like, okay. So I think people like when we rip these movies up. I think they do too, yeah. You guys should go listen to the Freddie Prinze Jr. season. Someone else said, Down to Shampoo absolutely cannot be beat. Oh, wow. So our review, it was a two-parter, Down to You. That was a huge movie for us. Yeah, that was our winning London, one of our winnings. Yeah. Yeah. isn't a favorite episode of mine to listen back to. Yeah. But it is like that when we reference when we're like, this is a Winning London episode. It just it means that it's our favorite movie from this season. The Winning London episode is like the movie that made us think we should find other movies by this headline. Yeah, yeah. And we should make this this season. Yeah. So it's like... It's so funny that you say that. I would love to know what you think of as like your favorite movie to your favorite episode that we've done, because I is I think Passport to Paris is one of my most favorite. OK, I can do one from each season. Passport to Paris is my favorite one from season one. The two parter, the first two episodes. I know you did last summer. Yeah. Yeah. The two parter from season two. Mm hmm. And then, although I'm sure Down to Shampoo is really funny to listen back to, I don't know that I've ever listened back to it. Man, season three has to be... elizabethtown it's gotta be it was just so fun to make and and it's just it's gotta be i agree i think passport to paris in the first season was the first time we like hit our stride and that felt really good and it was really fun to listen back to yeah um season two honestly you guys i've listened to the wing commander episode several times and it's funny oh my god that's so funny i never hated that movie so much and it doesn't make any since the beginning of that episode is me going if anyone ever makes me talk about this movie ever again and that's why I've never listened to it it's really funny that's so funny it's really funny but then yeah I've also really sorry I know it's like so lame to say that you like listen to her own podcast but I have listened to this I just want to hear what you have to say I don't even listen to
SPEAKER_05:myself
SPEAKER_03:and I've listened to the Elizabeth town episode a couple times Elizabeth town episode is like you guys so moving I had my I like came back to New York I was in LA when we recorded that episode and I we just watched it and I was like doing laundry at a girlfriend's house and I was like babe have you ever seen this I was like babe clock in have you ever seen this movie it was filmed in my hometown and we watched it again not even two weeks after we watched it for the show and she and I like both cried and I was like there are faults with it I understand why it's not in the like canon of like great rom-coms or whatever but then also I don't understand actually I don't I actually don't know why it's not remembered I think you guys aren't giving it it's due I think I watched it. I had a friend in town with me when we were recording that episode. My friend Chelsea. My number one hype woman. And she watched it with me. And we were both crying at the Susan Sarandon thing. And I was like, it's not just me. It's not just people from Louisville. Not like us is a line that literally... I could write a dissertation. Okay, people's favorite movies that we talked about, to no one's surprise, they are connected to the people's favorite episodes to listen back to. She's the Man was people's favorite movie that they overwhelmingly said. Why is it so... It's our generation specifically. I could show that movie to a 45-year-old man and they'd be like, you're rotted in the head. I don't think so. I just don't think so. That movie is funny. That movie is funny. It is funny, but you had to be there. I do think you had to be there. I think you had to be raised on Amanda Bynes. You had to know what she was doing. you had to say, I've never seen Channing Tatum before, but I must see more of him. Like, you had to be there. I do think that. Because that movie is buh-fucking-nanas. It's fucking hilarious. And it's like, you know what? People are out here like Chris Farley, like Will Ferrell, blah, blah, blah. And it's like, this movie is just funny. And I actually think it's our own limiting beliefs making us think that, like, you've got to have some special girly, like, you know, plug-in into this universe when it's like, no, quality is quality. And this movie is quality. high high quality it's really good also Spider-Man 2 is one of your all's favorite movies that you submitted that's obvious I mean that's just in terms of critical acclaim like yeah you guys know but also A Walk to Remember was on this list yeah I remember we had a comment from somebody when that episode came out that said she watched it or they watched it she listened to the episode four times and I was like what that does to my heart is like indescribable I couldn't listen like that's crazy to us our little chit chat four times okay we love you we know you you are yeah um a watch remember is it's fun it's fun as hell it's fun to re-watch yeah yeah we had a big time um okay best heartthrob i mean god you guys get it thank god because i was like we can't do him like this when he's already the lowest ranked season there's only one answer freddie prince jr is the best heartthrob and you guys thank god you stood on business on this one i really thought you were gonna embarrass him you guys i know but there are two runners up oh That were mentioned a lot. Not as much as Freddie. But you guys submitted two people. This is going to surprise no one. It's Josh Hartnett from The Virgin Suicides. And Shane West from A Walk to Remember. Who, like, Shane West in A Walk to Remember maybe is the biggest upset. Like, the biggest surprise. Not that he's an underdog, but I just didn't remember how incredible he is in it. I don't like what it says about us as a culture that Tripp Fontaine is... somebody that we're like i know messing up it like after we re-watched that and the way he did her i don't which is ironic that you say that because our next poll which jay who's your favorite heartthrob it's obviously jay it's like besides i'm curious it's like um yeah it's like i feel like it's got to be shane west i know i'll tell you oh okay um mine's like no question either Oh, yours is Paul Bettany from Wimbledon? No, but I mean, you guys know how I feel about Paul Bettany. He does like a weird thing to me, but it's not Paul Bettany. Although it's close. I'm trying to think because it's like a part of me really wants to pick. I just want to pick someone from Mary Kate Ashley. Jesse Spencer from Winning London. Oh, bry, bry. Rye, Rye. You know we love Rye, Rye. Rye, Rye. I'm winning London. I mean, Tobey Maguire. No, absolutely not Tobey Maguire. Jay. It's Michael Moskowitz. I know. I'm not a Michael Moskowitz girl. I know. It's all from the book, too. You guys came at me about the difference between the movies and the books, and I want you to know I don't care. We care about you sometimes. I care about your ideas deeply. I'm right about every single Princess Diaries opinion that I have. We only sometimes care. If you guys disagree with us, we're like, cool. That's cute. That's funny. Okay. The next poll is Best Bad Guy. And the number one winner from Best Bad Guy is my runner up after FPJ for Heartthrob. And it is Paul Walker from She's All That. Oh, yeah. It's got to be Paul Walker. He... is the boyfriend of this podcast. And I can't, Jay, is he in more than one movie? I feel like we're constantly talking about Paul Walker. It's like, I think, I don't think so. But he is in other movies when we do the context corner. It's always like, this movie just came out and Paul Walker's in it. And I feel like he's got to be in a Kirsten Dunst movie and we're just not remembering. No, Paul Walker is a bad, bad guy. He's a bad dude, but honestly, he adds layers to that movie. I was shocked. And interestingly enough, our runner-up best bad guy is also our runner-up for best heartthrob, Mr. Josh Hartman. This feels like where he should be. Yeah, Tripp Fontaine from Virgin Suicide is a real bad guy. Yeah. And he's our runner-up after Paul Walker. But I would argue Paul Walker is worse. More insidious, like, constantly violent. Yeah. Paul Walker has a desire to be evil. Tripp has a moron problem. Yeah, it's like he's just not thinking about other people, which is not good, but it's less insidious. Yeah. Who's your best bad guy? My favorite bad guy is Gobby. It's definitely... Gobby. Willem Dafoe. Yeah, my favorite bad guy is 100% Willem Dafoe's cunty little walk towards the mirror while he's talking to himself as Gobby. It's so iconic, you guys. It's insane. I think sort of an unsung bad guy... that i love to hate because the movie's so bananas is from billboard dad the art yeah the assistant the only person of color in that entire movie that they make evil and he's like fake english he's a good bad guy he is a good bad guy he's not as good as paul walker paul walker is very bad oh also the like evil creepy guy from when in rome they're like evil boss oh yeah i lost that movie out creepy um okay best style this one was easy mary kate nash i mean excuse me not and ashley i hate to say i hate to do it to miss underrated ashley oh no mary kate olsen was who was submitted the most for best style mary jane watson was number two in terms of who you guys said had honestly and respect on her name because she is not in the second one so much but the other ones she's really looking good i do think that you guys are really not giving ashley her due she's pulling out look after look i do not think she's the worst dress go back and watch passport paris she's just not worse dressed than mary k you guys yeah but i think people were I remember that like MK it was she was very much fashion girly that's because you guys are you guys we were all taught to hate pink and it really has come back to bite Ashley in the butt I think MJ Watson has good style for sure I actually low-key love Kirsten Dunst style in Crazy Beautiful where she's just like slutty and drunk the whole time I love that you're like I knew you were gonna say that I'm like okay Connor loves that movie she's never wearing a bra she's in a crop top the whole time she has her like tomboy haircut that makes her just like so much cooler than you because she's brave enough to chop it all off I also think that we really need to talk about her style in Elizabethtown because while it's not my favorite it's so of that era so of the moment with the red beanie and then that dress she wears Yeah. I mean, it's such a good dress where she's like, I refuse to be let down by this dress again. I love that
SPEAKER_05:movie.
SPEAKER_03:So those are my best style. I do want to say hilarious answers that we got a couple honorable mentions. One, Landon Carter in his puffer vest. Actually, yeah. Landon Carter's styling from A Walk to Remember is maybe my favorite styling across all of the movies, hands down, especially for boys. He looks so good in every single scene. Oh, yeah. It's insane. And he's wearing a t-shirt. It's shocking. It's insane. No, no, no. Yeah, it looks amazing. I remembered, I just remembered my fashion icon is, this is like an unsung one, but Claire from Boys and Girls when she wears the white clubbing outfit. Oh, yeah. And also just in general. You love that look. Yeah, because it's lace. That woman is beautiful. It lays down. But also, like, even the, like, little orange, like... Every single look is like perfect Y2K. She looks great. Yeah, it's pretty bananas. Okay, also a hilarious comment we got for best style was all caps, not Julia Stiles in her art teacher outfit. Real heads will know that we went like mega viral. It's like 2 million views, 3 million views or something for our takedown of Julia Stiles look in down to you. Okay, so just to address that video quickly. Because the controversy that went down in the comments for a second... Yeah, some of you guys are Mormons, and that's okay. Yeah, like, grow up, you guys. Like, okay, the floor-length skirt, I'm not mad at. I'll wear a maxi skirt. I appreciate that it was the 90s. She was dressed like a person in her 60s. She's 19 in that movie. Julia Stiles is obviously stunningly beautiful, and you'll notice we never, ever, ever say anything to the contrary about that. This is a podcast where we are critiquing... the creative choices made by the people who made the movie and someone dressed her someone styled her and they did a bad job it's so not about julia styles it's about fashion like it's about like heaviness of fabric and color and like putting things together and like i truly believe in any year it would have been crazy and i also feel like most of you were also on our side oh yeah no I actually I do it is important to say that literally hundreds of you are like this take is correct and hilarious it's actually objective yeah it is objective she looks whack um okay so finally this is the one you guys want to know we're not going to make any announcements we're pretty sure we know what we're doing next but we are like taking a temperature check who should we do next number one overwhelmingly that you guys submitted is Hillary Duff number two is Lindsay Lohan this makes perfect sense make perfect sense yeah you It falls right in line with the content that we've been making. Julia Stiles was also submitted a lot, as was Zac Efron. These all four of these people, transparently, we've talked about doing. Yeah. There's no one on the list that you guys submitted that we haven't been like, we haven't also thought about. And we almost certainly will cover everyone you guys submitted eventually. But we do have like a map out of who we're going to do. We're not going to tell you in this episode. An honorable mention I didn't expect was Leonardo DiCaprio. Oh. And then someone, a late submitter that I have to shout out because she felt bad she missed the poll. And what I want to say to her is you never miss the poll, baby. JTT, Jonathan Taylor Thomas. I don't think there's enough JTT content out there. Leonardo DiCaprio really surprises me. That seems like very left field. I understand in terms of like heartthrobs, like obviously he was the one. And there's not a single Leonardo DiCaprio movie that I wouldn't watch again. Like, let's do it I don't think we're in a time where I'm a very big current fan of him right now I'm thinking after the LA cap at the Jeff Bezos yacht wedding yeah I'm thinking I don't need to talk about him that much I'm good on him I love him as much as you guys Romeo plus Juliet Titanic was so formative for me for sure Romeo plus Juliet yeah is like absolute insane work I do think like we'll see when we get to the 100th episode like maybe we'll start running out of girls to talk about but like I mean the thing I want to say about this poll that stood out to me that was like i can't believe we haven't realized this before about the people suggested there is you guys are going to know what i'm talking about in 2004 there was a vanity fair cover that came out oh yeah four of the people from our headliners were on this cover that is amanda bines mary-kate olsen ashley olsen and mandy moore all four of them were on the cover of this magazine Additionally, Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan were featured on this magazine. So I'm like, this is like the universe that we're in. We could just literally go through one at a time. Everyone on that cover. I think Alexis Bledel is in it. Evan Rachel Wood's in it. Evan Rachel Wood is really not. Well, she didn't really make like she made like pretty dark movies. Yeah. She was like just in 13. Yeah. I actually think I could probably go the rest of my life and never watch 13 again. Yeah. I do think like it makes perfect sense because they made that Vanity Fair cover because we were having a moment and we are making this podcast addressing this moment.
SPEAKER_05:you
SPEAKER_03:know so it's like it like yeah I don't know if you guys know this but they were making teen movies in the early 2000s I like remember when that magazine cover came out I wouldn't be surprised if there's a copy of it in Louisville Kentucky to this day for sure I just think it's interesting that it's like they really nailed it they got it exactly right in terms of what we would remember about the era and every one of those girls so true yeah so true um okay best takes you guys submitted there was two that were my favorite the ones that I figured were worth discussing one someone submitted in terms of like because we're saying wacky shit it's just a fly by night it's stream of consciousness so someone's favorite take everything that the Lisbon sisters did was in the neighbor boys heads in the virgin suicides which I think is funny yeah I think I like the theory. I don't think necessarily the movie is positing it, but I do think it makes it an interesting watch to be like, well, how would they know what the girls are doing when they're not there? And the girls do behave markedly different when they're with them than when you're spying on them in their house. It's true. So I think it's a good theory. And I do think like she makes movies, Sofia Coppola makes movies that are so light on like dialogue and context that you can really... theorize yeah so many different things that space yeah okay the second theory that people love that we came up with was that in she's all that Paul Walker is actually secretly in love with Lainey this is not up for debate no absolutely I think that subtext is actually just text agree it's obvious he's so angry and violent the whole time with her it's giving Iago he literally asked her to prom he does want her he literally asked her to prom it's like to me that's like a non-negotiable I love that you guys love that as a theory or like you hadn't thought of it or what I'm completely convinced it's so it's so it's so convincing my favorite theory is that Olivia is a lesbian oh from she's the man yeah I know she is that's fact that's also canon it's in the text for sure okay worst takes my girl and she knows who she is because she comments on every single like our interaction at this point like you're an honorary just like sister of the pod mm-hmm She said accurate, but hurtful. Kirsten Dunst, baby teeth. Here's what I want to say. This is good. This goes back to the Julia Stiles thing. Kirsten Dunst, iconic, perfect, don't change a thing. But she even has commented on like, I'm going to like be, look how I look. I'm not going to go in and fix everything. I'm not going to like refuse to age. Like I'd rather be an interesting person with an interesting face and a background than like go in and like be workshopped to look like everyone else. I love that that's her vibe. I love that. she has her real ass teeth in these movies and there's not a veneer to be seen the comment i was making in spider-man to clarify is that we don't have blockbuster actresses like this anymore where you're on a full close-up inches from her face and she has a real human teeth in her mouth we just don't make movies like that you don't see it the same way you used to that's what i'm commenting on not that there's anything wrong with kirsten dunst's baby teeth no it's like i love what the comment actually is is that we love kirsten dunst's baby teeth and we want more people to have baby teeth more gaps like remember when miley cyrus had a gap you guys that's when we were a country and now everything's falling apart whose fault do you think that is not to blame it on her but i blame it on her orthodontist industry actually does have a lot to answer for and they're taking icons from us you guys it's i they're just yeah absolutely so we love you you know who you are who submitted you we do deserve to get checked for like calling out another woman like that, but it was a greater cultural commentary. It was a positive, it was a loving noticing of her natural beauty. Someone else sent that Get Over It was bad. You'll notice we have not mentioned Get Over It a single time yet in this 50th episode. I don't feel like I thought Get Over It was bad. I feel like I thought it was fine. I was like, it is bad, but not in a way where it's like I'm not enjoying it. You guys, Get Over It is not the worst movie I've watched for this podcast. No, it just isn't. I had, it was fine. I had fun. Colin Hanks. Yeah. I liked all the like. Shane West is in that movie. Yeah, he is. I enjoyed the like dream sequences. I feel like it was fine. Did we say we hated it? Yeah. When? The whole time. Yeah, it's not good. It's like, it doesn't, but it's not Spider-Man 2. We didn't make this movie so that every movie would be Spider-Man 2. You guys are entitled to think that Get Over It is like a movie worthy of acclaim. And people have wrong opinions all the time, you guys. Like we invite you. let's let's was get over worse than head over heels yes oh no yeah head over heels is good no you've you've forgotten you've already forgotten that head over heels was shockingly bad shock you guys head over heels is fun as hell and it's about no it's not we i thought it was fun as hell and then we re-watched it and i was shocked and appalled at how crazy she is okay no The main character is not a girl's girl, but all the other girls in the movie are girl's girls. And there is a lot of shit humor in that movie that I think they can take right out. She gets mounted by a dog. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I knew you were going to bring that up. You're like obsessed with that. It shocked me to my core. But there is the other girls in that movie, the models in that movie are girlhood and they are girl's girls. And it's just like, it should have been the main thing of the movie. And it wasn't because we just didn't have the recipes. We didn't have what we have now but I mean get over it was whatever it's forgettable I never need to talk about it again I would say forgettable okay and lastly my favorite because this is going to lead us into our next segment but our last worst take you guys took beef with is that the song in a walk to remember is bad my only hope listen we need to get this straight that she is so annoying in singing that song where she's like and I pray To be only yours I pray And to be only yours. I know now you're my only hope. You're forgetting the worst part, which is obviously the... Oh no, the worst part for sure is the aggressive humming stare. In his face. Guys, it's silly as hell. And it's like, she looks great. Honestly, it's an iconic scene. We all remember it. We all remember the song word for word. You'll never be able to take its iconic status from it. as a 30-year-old watching it with fresh eyes. It's silly. Yeah. This does lead us into our next segment. Okay, we're going to talk about some of the comments you guys submitted. If you recall, we asked you to email us. We asked you to DM us. We asked you to comment anywhere you could and it would reach us and we were going to compile some of the things we want to talk about. So that's what we've done. And the first thing I really want to address, and I think it's connected to some of our best and worst takes, some of the takes that you guys took issue with. I feel like maybe some of the people that were mad about the Julia Stiles outfit yeah also didn't enjoy this episode as much about that walk you can't forget our third episode of this season someone wrote to us and said I have loved the pod from day one but to be honest the religious hate in this episode was a lot you guys are entitled to your opinions I'm aware I don't have to listen but this was such a big movie from my childhood I really wanted to listen to this episode I'm just giving feedback Here's what I'll say to you, madam. You are so sweet, so entitled to that take for you to write that like you love us and you know you don't have to listen, but you just want to give it. Please send us that feedback. We are not offending us at all. We hope we haven't offended you. We thought it was downright adorable that you were like. I'm sorry. I have a little feedback that you might not like. I don't like it. I love this comment. I like I'm not even calling it a call out. I'm calling it a shout out to my favorite commenter. We're talking shit and we want you to be able to talk shit back. And we love to hear the shit you talk. Like, please send it to us. Thank you so much for leaving this comment. And thank you so much for listening. Yeah. And just to address some of the religious stuff like. We aren't religious people. That's my personal perspective on organized religion. I put left it all on the court. And that's where it is for me. I feel like no offense is ever meant. We are not religious people. And so any comments made about religion are made with the attitude of like, it not being very serious to us yeah we don't mean it very serious we love that you listen and we love that you respond and we hope you continue to do so I stand behind the takes and I hope you feel like you stand behind your takes and I love that we can come together about it last thing on this religion thing there were a couple comments that really did get our goat that were just too hilarious someone called Contra Posto wrote I personally love the religious hate just giving feedback which guys there's room for everybody yeah all are welcome another comment on that walk you can't forget that I absolutely love and we have to talk about someone wrote insane opening line and I didn't remember what we said for the opening line and I went back and listened to it and it is me lamenting that it is in fact sad that Mandy Moore dies that was a comment we truly loved also I want to give a shout out to Contra Paso who has left several comments and each one is a delight thank you so much for listening over the season We love to hear from you, girl. Someone commented also on A Walk to Remember that this is the first Nicholas Sparks movie they remembered, but something called Message in a Bottle was actually the first one to get turned into a movie. I've never heard of that one. Never heard of it. Maybe we'll watch it for the Patreon. If you go back and listen to the second thoughts from that time, we did talk about the other Nicholas Sparks movies that we watched and that came out and were important. I don't know anything about Message in a Bottle except that it's a Taylor Swift vault track. Amanda Burchette wants to know you don't know drive by incubus and okay this is actually something I get from a lot of my friends when we do context corner at the beginning and I'll be like I've never heard this song before and I'll get a straight up direct text message to my phone that's like bitch where were you how do you not know this song I'm with you I actually can't believe we go back through the like billboard top 100 and I have never heard of songs that were like from my childhood I think that's actually insane and wacky but it does happen all the time you don't know drive by incubus to this day, Amanda. I still don't know Drive by Incubus. Samantha Motz wrote us about Elizabethtown. I don't know exactly what she means here, but I'm going to read it because it's very relatable to me. She wrote, I've always loved this movie. While it was being filmed, I was in my first year of college in a whole different town with nobody that I knew. This movie always made me look forward to visiting my family and going home. Knowing they were in Louisville where I was made me feel so cool. So I don't know if she maybe went to UofL and went to college in Louisville or if she means that her family was from Louisville and she was away at college and she looked forward to coming home. I think she went to school in Louisville. She could have gone to Bellarmine. Yeah. But it says... this movie always made me look forward to visiting my family and going home, which makes it seem like maybe she's from Louisville. Maybe she's from Elizabeth town. Oh yeah. Who knows? We don't know, but this is very relatable for us. That's why we love this movie so much too. Completely. Um, okay. About sucks to be Spidey. A little correction. Also, we don't do very much research and we sometimes are wrong about the names we say or whatever. Cause like truly who cares? Someone wrote, Hey ladies, I'm not sure someone else has told you already but just in case they didn't, that was how sparks in the elevator and Superman, not Michael Ian black. That's an important correction. It is how sparks and not Michael Ian black in the elevator in that scene. And the reason I confused that is because they were in fact both on a very popular TV show called, I love the decades. I love the odds. Um, they were also on best week ever where it was like recapping popular culture or whatever, which was like that kind of content is literally, we couldn't be making this show without that kind of content. It was like the Genesis of like everything I love to like talk about what I like every episode of those. That's why I confuse them. But she is right. That is a correction that's worth making. We have another correction from Sister Time Sadness from Kelly Finch. And she really humbled us when she reminded us that it was, in fact, Robin Wright and not Daryl Hannah. who plays Jenny in Forrest Gump. Yeah, and I just mixed them up and that's the truth. I just got it wrong. Also, this is interesting. Jay and I were talking about this about Spider-Man. Someone pointed out to us, you mentioned Mary Jane's astronaut fiance leaping as far as he did. The reason is that the character in the comics eventually becomes Man-Woof, which I think Raimi would have explored if he had kept going with the franchise. We don't remember talking about this. I'm sure we noticed it and it was like, okay, crazy. But that is actually a very interesting fact and it does give context for that little scene. Love that for you guys. Yeah, and I do think, like, thank you so much for writing in. I'm going to continue to only remember that he's Elijah in the Vampire Diaries. Angel Gilchrist wrote us about Undercover Down Under, which is the Our Lips Are Sealed episode, to let us know that wallabies are baby kangaroos. And to that, I would like to see her credentials. Yeah, I know. I actually prove it. Because I don't believe her. Sorry, Angel. Love you. Thanks for the comment. Okay. This is our girl Contra Passo again. The way that I feel seen in this moment, this is I was dying on this hill and Jay could not go with me. There is a context corner in Bring It On where the movie, the Destiny's Child song Jumpin' Jumpin' is in the top 10 for the context corner of that episode. And I posited that that is a Halloween song. And Contrapasso agrees with me. Jumpin' Dungeon is such a Halloween song. Laughing face emoji. Thank God. I'm seen. I'm understood. She also, in talking about Scooby-Doo, we went on a rant about she I'm saying she it may not be a she they they also um we I guess we went on a JK Rowling rant she says the chokehold Harry Potter has a millennials is absolutely nuts omg fuck that lady and to that I say yep 100% fuck that lady yeah 100% fuck that lady yeah the thing about this comment that is that I would like to address um contrapasso we are millennials yeah that must be obvious by the content to be clear we are millennials and I yeah okay that's it on comment o'clock you guys thank you so much for writing us we love engaging absolutely the funnest part of this is like what the fuck people have to say back to us um okay I'm too amped to get into this next segment because we're gonna do some trivia and like we have both separately prepared questions I'm so stoked I had so much fun coming I have six questions about dialogue, but mine are the first two seasons and you're the last two. So should I go first? Yeah, you go first. Okay. Okay. Okay. So Jordan, I'm so excited. I was like writing trivia questions. Okay. Okay. Okay. Jordan. Yeah. I love. And you guys play along to say it out loud. You might know the answer. You probably know the answer, especially when you give you guys. Yeah. Okay. Jordan. Yeah. In winning London, James, played by Jesse Spencer, helps Chloe out of a bind when she gets toilet paper stuck to the bottom of her shoe. The result of discreetly saving her teammate Dylan from certain humiliation. He says to her, I've got a foot on it. You might want to check your shoes next time before you leave the loo. To which she responds, loo who? James then lists three different ways to reference the restroom. The loo is only one of them. Name the other two. The toilet? The WC? The washroom? That's right! Yeah! I do not remember that from the movie. James literally says the WC, the loo, the toilet. You got it right! Oh my god, that was really good. Okay, here we go. Number two. There is a line that is delivered to camera in two movies that are set in seemingly separate universes. Both times, the line is delivered by Ashley Olsen. First, in Our Lips Are Sealed, and then again in Winning London. What is the line? Oh, my God. I can give you a hint. Oh, wait. Okay, give me a second, and then I am going to. Okay. It's something about, like, not speaking the same language. Okay, what's the hint? It's about, it starts with, I know, I know. But he's so cute. Oh my God. I reckon Ashley's season is the best season. It is the best season. Okay. You're going to know this one because I harp on this so much. And you mentioned it earlier about bullying. In Passport to Paris, Ashley is attempting to teach her crush, Jean, English. She tells him to repeat after her. What is the phrase she has him recite? um something about that that geek is a total freak show so close that dweeb is a total freak show i always harp on that because i'm like it's the meanest thing i've ever heard i'm so close to saying dweeb you'll never know okay this one's kind of hard it's similar to the other one okay in our lips are sealed ashley again breaks the fourth wall in a scene where we learn that her sister mary kate has learned to surf the school bully victoria asks her since when does she know how to surf What does Mary-Kate respond? Since the last scene? She says, since this scene, apparently.
UNKNOWN:Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_03:That's it. I knew it was like a fourth wall break. That movie is so wacky. I know. It's so wacky. It's so good. OK. The next two are season two Freddy Files questions. Oh, OK. There is a breakfast food that is repeatedly mentioned in the movie Down to You. Yes, I know what it is. Particularly in reference to Samuel Blair's character, Cyrus, who laments that no one has done this for her before. To this day, neither of us can say with 100% certainty whether or not this breakfast food serves as a double entendre in the movie. She asked Jim to what? Make her pancakes. Yes. Make her pancakes. Even saying it out loud makes it sound like it is a double entendre. We still don't know what it means. It's like, I guess it's not a sex thing. Okay, and last Honestly, this is my favorite one. If you don't get this one, I'll be stunned. In the movie She's All That, Freddie Prinze Jr.''s character, Zach, observes Lainey from a cliffside after a long day at the beach. Oh, my God. Beside him, his duplicitous friend, Dean, played by boyfriend of the pod, Paul Walker, comments on her body in despicable but hilariously ludicrous terms. What does he say? He calls them Bobos. But check out the Bobos on Super Freak. Yes. Yes, dude. Yes. If you guys could see Jay thinking, check out the Bobos on Super Freak. that is damn you got six out of six you needed a little help on a couple of them but you got it wasn't that fun yeah that was so my favorite fucking line maybe from all the seasons check out the bobos on super why would you ever call them bobos it's so good okay that was so fun i'm ready for mine fun okay jay's doing trivia from seasons three and four it's not trivia i'm just gonna name a quote and i want you to name okay the movie that it's from okay who said it okay okay I told you I'd move a car if a cripple came. Kirstie Alley says it in Drop Dead Corpse. It's such a good one. We have... So I'm a little behind. Who isn't? Oh my God. These are so good already. It's Aunt May in the second... spider-man movie spider-man too 100 i love that all of our quotes are like shit that we harped on in the episode okay um that mother didn't kill anybody she hired a hitman oh no this one's a trick that mother didn't kill anybody she hired a hitman it's it's not gonna be drop dead gorgeous i guess what is it i don't know Do you want a hint? Yeah. It's not Drop Dead Gorgeous. Okay. Good hint. It's from the Drop Dead Gorgeous season. Okay. Kirsten Dunst. I don't know. What is it? It's her mother in Bring It On talking about some mothers would kill to get their daughters on this squad. Oh, yeah. And her mother says, that mother didn't kill anyone. She hired a hitman. That is a good trick one. I bet I knew it was too obvious to be Drop Dead Gorgeous. Okay. You've already done better at the trivia than me. Okay. We have... Mom always says, don't ever eat nothing that can carry its house around with it. Who knows the last time it's been cleaned? That's drop-dead gorgeous. Yeah, it is. Yeah. And then we have, I'm impossible to forget, but I'm hard to remember. Oh, I love that line. Elizabethtown. My girl Claire in Elizabethtown. We have... I want to say Spider-Man, but I guess it's not. No. Is it an Amanda Bynes movie? It's not an Amanda Bynes movie, but it is Mandy Mania. Mandy Moore. Okay, Mandy Moore. Is it Chasing Liberty? No, it's not. What is it? It's Prince Philippe from the Princess Diaries. Oh my God. One of my favorite openings from any episode we do is us trying to say Philippe Reynaldo. Yeah. Oh my God. That's a really good line that I don't remember from Princess Diaries. Okay, fun. This is fun that they're hard. Okay. We have, if it wasn't this, it'd be something else. Oh, Elizabethtown. I love that line, too. It's so funny. Okay. And our last one is... How come when I wanted to ask Eunice out, everyone made fun of me, but then Sebastian likes her and suddenly she's cool. Screw you guys. I hate high school. It's she's man. I love that line. It's so good. I love that line. It's so funny. Oh my God. That was so, so fun. Jay prepared. She did extra credit. So she created the playlist, all credit to Jordan for the 50th episode playlist that's coming out. Thank you. It's called Second Listen. You can find it on Spotify. It's, I mean, guys, it's nostalgia. It's like everything that you love about these movies. movies and music format and jay is going to play a few songs and quiz me to see if i know where they are from and i feel certain i'll be good at this but we'll we're gonna learn we're gonna find out um okay
SPEAKER_04:to kiss dreams can bring
SPEAKER_03:me this it's um get over it and that is the kirsten dunst original composition yeah that's katie singing you guys she did a great job oh she's all that this is she's all that Kiss Me. I mean, I need two chords, opening chords for that song. You guys write in. I know for a fact that this is in more than one movie that we've watched, but I was going through every single soundtrack and I couldn't find the second movie that it was in. So if you guys remember, please write in because it's actually going to keep me awake at night. Yeah.
UNKNOWN:Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:Oh my God. Okay. It's definitely in Crazy Beautiful, but it's not just in that. Yep. There's, it's another one. And it was like also, is it Elizabethtown? No. Wait, it's also Kirsten Dunst though. Yes, it is. Okay. So it's going to be Wimbledon. Yep. Oh my God. I love Wimbledon. And what's the song? What's the song? David Gray, This Year's Love. This is an epic, epic, epic, epic, epic song. For sure. In both movies. In both movies. I mean, perfect montage song. I, whew, that's a good one. That's a good pull. This is going to be a good playlist. 99 Red Balloons, this is from. It's in Our Lips Are Sealed when they go to the abandoned amusement park. What a cool scene. Do they do the original German or it's in English? This song has both. Oh, okay. The original song's in German. This song does like the first verse in English. That was a big song when it came out. It was huge. Okay, here's a fun one. Oh, it's Spider-Man for sure. Is it the OG Spider-Man? No. it's uh vindicated i am selfish i am wrong i am right i swear i'm white okay real heads will remember that we had it we had it out on the podcast because it's like there's no way they wrote this for the movie and jay was totally right they wrote it for the movie it's vindicated by dashboard confessional so good okay um i have a couple more this one is a big one so
SPEAKER_01:So brother, check it out now
SPEAKER_00:it's the
SPEAKER_03:foam party scene of boys and girls no it's not no it's not there's a different song credited to that song what is it um i mean it's also on the playlist so you guys can check it out but do you want to keep guessing wait that's from she's all that the prom scene where they have the grenades but i i thought we found out it was also in boys and girls it's not um i mean they do sometimes change music between streaming and when it's out but on the official soundtrack there's a different song that is also on the playlist um but it is in another movie what it's in scooby-doo oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah keep going keep going Definitely season one Mary-Kate and Ashley. I'll give you a hint. They are featured in the movie where this song plays. It's play from Holiday in the Sun. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it is. That is such a good track. And I can picture Megan Fox, like, crossing the dance floor. Because she only wants one thing this summer. Yeah. Oh, my God. So good. I knew the lyrics immediately. Yeah, you did. I was really impressed. Okay. This is a good little sneak peek of the playlist. There are so many fun songs, you guys. I really had the time of my life, but we'll end it on this one.
SPEAKER_02:Soon as this is over, we'll go home.
SPEAKER_03:To
SPEAKER_02:plant the seeds of
SPEAKER_03:justness in our bones. It's Elizabethtown, My Father's Gun.
SPEAKER_05:Such
SPEAKER_03:an iconic, such a good song. And used impeccably in this movie. Truly, more than once. Wow, that was so fun. You guys, download the playlist. Enjoy. We had so much fun. The music is so good from the era. Honestly, Mary-Kate and Ashley, their vision. They knew what they were doing. Yeah, the songs are really good. All right. The next segment we were talking about, because this is like the ultimate real goal, really is like discovering the messaging and how... you know how much it hurt or helped us or whatever
SPEAKER_05:yeah
SPEAKER_03:so we were talking about movies to show our daughters yeah the next generation of women what from the list what from each season would be worth it yeah I do think like we the original impetus of the entire podcast right was like We watched these movies before our brains were fully formed. They had messages. They communicated those messages to us that we then carried into our adult life that we may not be conscious of until we rewatch and we dissect. So in thinking about this category, it's like, what messages do I actually co-sign and would pass on? And what messages am I... truly trying to shield my daughter from my hypothetical daughter I would show my daughter our lips are sealed because they defeat a bad guy there's a lot of agency in that yeah they also like discover that it's like not important to be popular and that real friends matter I love that movie so much also winning London where they have like a real goal and they work together and they sort of like have to noodle it out in a non-traditional way in order to win yeah and there's like there's really, really good sister moments in that movie too. I love Winning London. What about you for season one? I love Our Lips Are Sealed and I do feel like I would show it to my daughter just because it's so wacky and it is so fun. Yeah. But when I think of like raising like a cool daughter, like Passport to Paris, I feel like was so fun to watch and so good to see like their mind shift change from like a small world to a big world. And there are some things about like, we've gone over it in the episode and you can go back and listen about like some light bullying, but I feel like that would maybe have a negative impact but I love that the overarching theme isn't romance it really is about like growing up and being an independent person and like discovering the world for yourself and I would want like a kid to have that the only reason I didn't put it on my list is it's like the thing that they accomplish is finding boyfriends and I think the other two movies yeah they do go to the Louvre the other two movies they do something else in addition to finding boyfriends although let's be clear that is always the main thing they're doing Connor They don't just find boyfriends. They literally change French law with a dinner party. You're so right. You're so right. Actually, it's going on. They're diplomats. But I do think. The best three movies are Passport to Paris, Our Lips Are Sealed, and Winning London. I would not show my daughter Billboard Dad. Me either. Yeah, I really wouldn't. You guys, the messaging and Billboard Dad. I didn't have one from season two that I thought deserved it. I don't think I'm going to show them She's All That. I don't think I'm going to show them Head Over Heels. I don't think I'm showing... I mean, sure, I guess. I know you did Last Summer. That's fine. But it's like, Ryan Phillippe is so violent in that movie, and there's so much just bad 90s um positioning that it's like I would probably just skip it there's not like a real valuable message I think to pull out of one of them the Scooby-Doo movies I just never want to watch again but I'm sure you could show them to a kid I don't know yeah I the Scooby-Doo movies are one of those movies where it's like that's movie for adult dressed up like a movie like a kid which is not um which I think is like you don't really need to show your kid that I kind of agree I'm like thinking back on it now um Yeah, I know you did last time. Yeah, I don't think so. There's not one from season two. Sorry, Freddie. We love you. Summer catch. Summer catcher cannot show a child. Brittany Murphy in that poor movie. Oh, my God. Yeah, you're so right. No, you couldn't show anybody. The sexual assault of Wilma Romero. Like, there's so much problem. You couldn't. Okay, season three, Strike. I knew you were going to say Strike. All I want to do is girlhood in a movie. It is, if you can believe it, it's coming up. made the top five of my favorite movies of all the movies we've watched. Yeah. It's maybe just personal to me. One of my faves ever. It's so, so, so, so, so good. You've got Rachel Lee Cook. You've got Kirsten Dunst. You've got Merritt Weaver. Amazing in that movie. Yeah. You've got Gabby Hoffman. Oh wait, is it Gabby Hoffman? What's her name? I think so. Yeah. But also just the message of the movie is about like taking things into your own hands, carving out a path for yourself. Leaning on your sisters, not taking no for an answer when the no is coming from the man. Building community within the sisterhood. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's so good. So good field hockey. I mean, yeah, it's just great. Yeah. The virgin suicides. I also think because of the conversations that we had in that episode that to me were so enlightening about like the way that the boys are jealous of girls internal lives and the ways that they are mesmerized by all of the imagination of the girls. Like it does do this positioning of like the rich internal lives of women is something to be envied. And I'd never thought about that before. I don't think from that movie, but I do think it's a takeaway that I would show my kid and then lastly I put Elizabethtown because it's so special to me and it's so about our hometown I would absolutely absolutely with whatever problems you might find in it that aren't perfect I would have to show it to my kid yeah I think I would definitely show my kid Elizabethtown I feel like the Sofia Coppola ones it's like I don't need to show her that I'm just gonna find it on her own the world's gonna be pushing those yeah sure um so but I agree I think Elizabethtown moved me so much and is like particularly special to me so that's No. Oh my God, Spider-Man 2. I'd show my kid all the Spider-Man movies. I guess it's like I wouldn't not show them the Spider-Man movies. It's just not one of the ones that's like... That's like about being a young girl. No, I totally agree. And then season four, I wrote Big Fat Liar because I love Amanda Bynes so much in it and she's such a good character and she has so much agency in that movie. Yeah. And Princess Diaries, you would have to show your kid. And then also, of course, She's the Man. I think She's the Man... is not perfect but I like that she tries out for the boys team and she makes it and I like that she stays true to herself and she's so funny funny I would definitely show my kid um she's the man I think it's so funny she's so good in it um and I do think it has like yeah strong messaging I would not show my kid Big Fat Liar I don't think yeah I mean the funniest thing about that movie is we watch it and we're like this movie doesn't tell you that lying's bad that's one truth I also think How to Do is fine you can watch it I think the moments where Mandy Moore is a friend to her friend Scarlett are really good for girls yeah for sure for sure and I think Allison Janney is just like the only thing you should expose your daughter to I mean there are a lot of like good movies on this list where it's like I would be happy for my kid to watch them and it's like and I'm really not even one to be like my kid can only watch the movies I co-sign it really is just like the messages that I co-sign for young girls yeah for sure okay so so we're gonna do All across all seasons are top five movies. And they're not like the best five, but they're my favorite. Jordan's favorite. I'm going to say from season one, Winning London. Holds up. I still love it. I would watch it right now. From season two, I Know What You Did Last Summer is my favorite one. And then all of the ones from Kirsten Dunst. Strike. Bring It On, and She's the Man round out my top five. But I have to say, honorable mention, Elizabethtown. I was so close to knocking She's the Man for Elizabethtown. Yeah. Because it's just so personal to me. Obviously, Princess Diaries is great. A Walk to Remember was great. Spider-Man 2 is great. She's All That is great. But personally, none of them knock Strike Off for me in terms of girlhood. I don't know. I can't explain why I love that movie so much. I didn't think I remembered loving it so much. Yeah. But Miss Goddard's all the way. Miss Goddard for life yeah for me I also did five top movies and then five honorable mentions yeah because that's not good yeah I know we're related for me though I really thought of it as like five movies that I wouldn't give back like that I am not that I will be watching again so it's like it's a mix of top quality and top like nostalgia for me it's Our Lips Are Sealed that I think is just the most fun movie from that season to watch Spider-Man 2 you guys know how I feel about it She's the Man Impeccable Elizabethtown and then drop dead gorgeous was so funny yeah but i really feel like i was like i couldn't not watch that movie again it was so funny but i did want to do some honorable mentions of movies that really surprised me these are like not based on nostalgia these are movies where i truly was like i did not expect this to be as good as i left the episode thinking it was and that's got to be summer catch you've got to shout out summer catch i know you did last summer and chasing liberty I really think was better than I remembered it being passport to Paris and the challenge oh my god the challenge is on your list wow it was better than I thought it was gonna be yeah it is good I love the challenge me too okay and then biggest takeaways we really wanted to finish the episode just talking about some things that we continue to revisit things that always come up as we watch takes that we have that we keep coming back to because if you are to look at the whole thing as an overarching like era of our childhood the fact that these messages continue to pop up again and we continue to like assess them and bump into them is kind of the whole point yeah um so i'll let you start yeah um i think one thing that is funny how often it's come up i never would have expected it when we started this podcast is how often people are in inappropriate like workplace relationships like how normalized it was to meet someone you were gonna like have a thing with yeah at work and like the toxic work dynamics are at play in these relationships in these movies like if you think about the win in rome where it's the ceo and then like his personal assistant and they fall in love and good for them but like that's crazy commander slander is the name of the episode for wing commander and she's his like fucking military boss which is like so messed up but even just now in chasing liberty the two secret agents i think it's worth noticing that they said this is how you'll meet someone to fall in love with and there's no mention whatsoever of how it could get you in trouble or that it might not be a good idea there just never is it just is a totally reasonable place there's the part about being your boss but there's also like an inherent unequal dynamic in men and women in the workplace like men get paid more men like women are more likely to be fired like women are only very newly in the workplace in the corporate life you think about like since the beginning of time and it's I do think that it's something that people are purposefully not looking at or they didn't have the vocabulary for when they were making these movies because that is present in every single one of these relationships and the movie every single one of the movies just acts like it isn't I also think like if you need any argument ever for like how pervasive the whole me too thing is it's like look no further than every single piece of media telling you you should hit on the girl that works for you like The idea that there's a single person out there that does not believe that that kind of culture is as pervasive as we say it is literally has never seen a single movie, has never seen a movie made from the era that we were watching movies as we were kids because it is inserted into every single movie. It's really crazy. Okay. Also, another... thing we keep bumping into absentee fathers in this movie the casualness with which you actually just don't need them that bad sometimes they're just too busy to perform fatherhood it's no big deal we gotta let them off the hook for that sort of thing at the end of the day you can't really ever stay mad or be mad princess diaries is a big egregious example what a girl wants is also what a girl wants even though it's not necessarily Colin Firth's fault but even in so far as dad that are present, but are so bad at being dads like in switching goals and they have that one dad that just doesn't fuck with ashley at all yeah or in billboard dad where it's like he's so busy making art and being sad that we can really get up to anything we want or even in the challenge where they parent trap them and they send them to do two different coasts and one of the daughters just doesn't see their other parent ever yeah the idea the concept of parent trap being like a concept that we just accept that someone would do neglect one of their children and agree never to to see them again as long as I mean it's just insane yeah it comes up again and again and again for sure a big one there's no diversity in any of these movies we have just not I mean and something that Jay and I run into a lot and we're open to feedback and comments or whatever like we said you don't scare us we've talked about the fact that when we go back and choose headliners and we revisit these movies from our childhood it's always white actors yeah we have we do do talk about how to feature more diverse movies. And we will. And I think it's something you can hold us to. But it's worth pointing out, it's just such slim pickings in terms of diversity from this entire era of our childhood. White actors, white main characters was really what you got. And even the whole season, Freddie Prinze Jr. is Latino, but he- True. In several of these movies, he has white parents too, white parents. Yeah, for sure. I mean, I do feel like when we first started the Mary-Kate and Ashley season, we were commenting that there wasn't a lot of diversity. And honestly, the more the seasons went on, the more it was like just every single movie. So it's like maybe we weren't mentioning it as much, but it really is every single movie. And that's why we weren't mentioning it. I mean, I don't think you get a black main character until our second season with the second, the sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer when Brandi shows up. I don't think you have a single black main character in any Mary-Kate and Ashley movie or even person of color in any Mary-Kate and Ashley movie. Yeah. Which is just... Wild. Yeah. We're aware of it. And we want to feature and focus on movies that are more inclusive and more diverse. And we're cooking. And then. the last kind of like overarching thing which is you just already know what it's gonna be slut shaming was a big one for me it's just in every single movie there's a few things it's just like about how women should behave really there's a lot of conversations about food and fat phobia and dieting and stuff that's to be expected we could have a million conversations till the end of time about the body standards beauty standards of the time it's really still talk about it now yeah 25 years later and the fear that some of those beauty standards are coming back blah blah blah that's a conversation that goes on forever but like as early as the really long rant we have from billboard dad about him having dinner with all the types of women that rant that we have to me is one of those pervasive things about doing this whole show yeah that it's like constantly a man sitting across from a woman and all the types of women that women can be are wrong all of the way they can be wrong all of the ways they're not good that there's actually very very very narrow needle to thread yeah neat like you know needle hole to thread about how to get it exactly right and that almost like a served purpose of these movies is to demonstrate for you all the hundreds of thousands of ways to get it wrong so that you can avoid it and it shows up in every single movie to me that is like one of the biggest things that I do think we move away from a little bit now that you see more types of people on screen I don't think we'll ever get out from under it I think it'll always be an idyllic universe where people are going this is how people should look but I do think it's better and I think it makes me very very cognizant and very aware of how bad it was when we were kids. And I think it honestly manifests still to this day all of the time. I'm 33 right now and very aware of all the ways that the universe is telling me how I should be. And the earliest versions and the earliest examples of that messaging is absolutely from these movies that we watch. Yeah, I think one of the sharpest takes, Connor, on the whole podcast is one that you made where it was about, they talk about women being fat, but there are no fat women in these movies. So they're talking about very thin women and labeling them fat and how confusing that is for kids for kids bring it on is a really really egregious example yeah um yeah that they would not show you an ugly woman because that as an audience would be so impossible for our brains to process so they'll take a pretty woman to talk about her like she's ugly like she's ugly and i also think like in passport to paris there's a scene at the very beginning where they are um like in competition with another lunch table for the attention of the to Homecoming and just the way they talk about those girls for no reason other than they are in a perceived competition is really like emblematic of kind of the way women were expected to interact with each other and then there are movies on our lists that are purposefully addressing that to like present the opposite like Strike but it is so pervasive that the movies that do present the opposite are like very obvious about it yeah and they're like we're doing a thing here that you should actually befriend women exactly and it's and it is interesting to see how like not obvious the competition is laid in to the movies that have it and then how obvious the sort of rebuttals have to be is just so telling about the way women were being made to think about each other as enemies like completely unconsciously yeah and um it's shocking I do think it has to be said about Mary-Kate and Ashley because it's the season it was our first season it's the one people love so much and keep coming back to Mary-Kate and Ashley are never set up in competition to each other once there is no No movie where they compete for the same guy. Actually, that's not true. And switching goals. He likes Ashley and she pretends to be Ashley to go out with him. Okay, I see that, but I stand by that they don't compete for him. Yes, yeah, I agree. There's no point where they're in competition with each other or one of them like secretly, there's like a duplicitous thing. I think that would have been a very obvious natural conflict for someone to set up for two girls that are identical. I think, yeah. And I think it's such a relief that at least we escaped that. I totally agree. I think it's great that that, that Mary-Kate and Ashley are always on each other's side, except in the challenge, but But even in the challenge, the point of the movie is that they should be. Yeah. They're better together. They're better together. And so are we. So much better. Better together. OK. Onward and upward. We have the rest of season four to do. We will be announcing at the end of season four what season five is going to be. We're really excited. I think I can reveal if Jay will let me keep this an episode that no one has guessed it. Nobody has submitted and guessed what we're going to do for season four. You will not be disappointed. You will be so stoked. No, I'm really excited. I will let you say that no one has guessed it, but I will go a step further and say one of you was really close. One of you was really close, yeah. Okay, we love you guys so much. Holy shit, 50 episodes. Oh my god, you guys, 50 episodes. Thank you guys so much. Here's to 50 more. We just have the time of our lives doing this, and so we're so glad to do it for 50 more. Bye! Please leave us a review.
