Good morning, Baltimore.

SPEAKER_00:

Okay, we are back for Hairspray. I bet you guys are so relieved. You were like, what is it going to be? Is it going to be Sidney White? Is it going to be Hairspray? Well, let me tell you. This movie came out in July of the 07. And then Sidney White came out in September of 07. So you are spared the Sidney White episode for at least a couple more weeks. And we are spared from talking about that movie because holy moly, we can't wait to talk about Hairspray. I know. I feel like we've been threatening it for a couple. I know. We're like, Hairspray is next right like it's coming up right which one is it okay well it's this one it's this one 51 you guys hairspray 51 episode 51 we're back we hope you guys had fun during the 50th we really really really did we had a little party in Brooklyn thank you to everybody that came out it was so so fun we had a little cake we had a little dance we had a little stuff on Patreon that you can pay us for we'll post some of the photos from our celebration on the patreon so that it feels like you guys were there with us yeah and we got a really nice few dms from people who couldn't make it that were like oh my god it was out of town or whatever and we to that we say next time babes see you at the party together again soon yes and i won't reveal how many people i kissed on the mouth but that's for me to know a lady never kisses and not to find out um okay hairspray jay i love this movie i know i love this movie it's got a couple of our faves in it Zac Efron big big guy with with this team big guy with this audience with this team so much to say about Zac Efron um but before we get into it I'm going to tell you what was going on when this movie came out please I'm dying to know context corner let's go let's get into the context corner it was July 2007 and it truly was a simpler time the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix movie the fifth film in the series came out this month and the harry potter and the deathly hallows the last book in the series came out this month all in the same month and even though we don't fuck with her now we don't fuck with her and we don't support harry potter media we do deeply deeply deeply remember this moment in time as a like huge cultural moment yeah and we read them we admit it we read them come on we were born in the 90s we read them and It's like, I can't even go into it. It was such a huge part of my childhood. And now I just have to act like it never happened. Like you can never love anything and fuck transphobes. But she didn't hurt us as much as she hurt the dolls. And we're a team. Protect the dolls. And we've got to protect the dolls. 100%. Another very important piece of pop culture that happened this month is Mad Men started. Came out on AMC this month. I think that feels right. Yeah. That was a huge cultural moment too. And I think it had like several seasons. I feel like it. felt so fresh when it came out that it's so weird to think about it now as something that is like more than a decade old I put it in that category of like the Breaking Bads like the OG prestige television where people are like are they doing a little something over here like the first one of those early shows after The Sopranos like The Sopranos is the first one I feel like where people are like hold on this is like you could be making art yeah exactly and then they're like what if we did Mad Men for sure Dita Von Teese and Marilyn Manson got divorced this month of 2019 Fuck with Marilyn Manson. We do not fuck with her. Justice for Dita Von Teese. Glad that she is free. Justice for Evan Rachel Wood. Justice for anybody that ever went anywhere near that guy. Ever crossed, yeah, his path. And then, luckily, Dita Von Teese would go on to star in the Bejeweled music video. Yeah, so she had her second act, is what she's saying. And another very important divorce that happened this month, Britney Spears divorces Kevin Federline. Oh, wow. After two years of marriage. Now that we know the backstory and just, like, how quickly she, like, you know, had those kids in quick succession and how much scrutiny she was putting up with like so quickly postpartum and then her man to leave her like it was a tumultuous ass yeah I'm not necessarily a Kevin Federline fan um me either but justice for Brittany and in literally any conversation where you bring her yeah like she deserves the world and that's it that's everything that was going on okay well it sounds like an exciting time it definitely puts this in place I've got so many treats for you on this billboard top 100 number one with a bullet back in a time where maroon 5 was good and they weren't just like naming their kids after their mistresses and shit what they're up to now we've got makes me wonder if this wasn't a banger you guys you still don't have a reason and you don't have the time no no truly like we don't speak enough about how maroon 5 really like captured the art of like fucking going off like in your chorus like these choruses are like lines and like these are long courses and you remember every single word yeah I know it was pretty good number two we have not my favorite Ava Levine song girlfriend hey hey you you I don't like your girlfriend hasn't aged well and it's also just annoying regardless of the fact that it's an anti-feminist anthem it's fucking annoying to listen to and it's so hey hey you you it's such a bummer because I feel like I have to go off on this I'm sorry and this can be a second thoughts if it has to be the way actually keep it the fuck in here because she needs to know the way that Avril Lavigne rose to fame as this like alt fuck authority fuck like you know I am gonna talk about this boy hurting my feelings because boys are such posers and like I'm trying to be authentic and I'm gonna wear a tie and I don't give a fuck and I'm Canadian at 17 she had more fucking attitude and authenticity and then and I'm sure who knows maybe she was baked in the easy bake oven of you know we do now know that she was 100% an industry plant whatever but for so quickly this isn't even that long later 07 for her to be churning out this crap that's like brutal and go back and listen to complicated honey i listened to it today because you know that shit is on our 50th anniversary playlist exactly it is so good and then i'm with you follow that shit up complicated with i'm with you are you kidding she was the

SPEAKER_01:

realist

SPEAKER_00:

get this girlfriend off my desk get this i don't like your girlfriend mess out of here she is too bad okay I was gonna say what I remember this song coming out and I remember being like oh my god Avril Lavigne is like making music again like where has she been I think it had been like six years and in between 2001 you know what I mean that was like my whole life that was like my whole childhood that she hadn't been making music I guess so she was like a throwback to her already okay number three also a throwback who like stopped making music and came back a totally different person we have Nelly Fatato and Justin Timberlake with give it to me which is such a banger it's like If you see us in the club, we'll be acting real nice. I feel like this song just popped up on TikTok again. I feel like this just became a TikTok sound. If you talk about it. I mean, Justin Timberlake, unfortunately. I mean, listen. He really pulled some out. Yeah, I mean, it really was bop after bop. It was bop after bop. Then we've got Buy You a Drink, which to this day is a song that stands. This is the greatest song of all time. Buy you a drink. There. there's so many amazing like slow jam versions of this and like indie pop girl versions of this you don't need to change a thing you could don't touch a hair on its head it's so it's the perfect song after that we have because of you neo which is a song i don't know but is really bold to me to have a song called because of you in an era where kelly clarkson is quite literally dominating who's in charge being like neo releases track and call because clearly it worked it's number five on the fucking billboard top 100 after that we've got number six i'll stand by you which you might it's Carrie Underwood and you might be thinking I don't know that song but you actually do know that song because it is in fact a cover of the Pretenders song that you know well I'll stand by you yeah yeah honestly fuck Carrie Underwood why what did she do don't even she's like a huge Trump supporter she like sang at the inauguration say fucking oh yeah I forgot that shit I was like what I know we actually used to really rep Carrie Underwood because she wrote that song about a Louisville slugger she put the Louisville slugger on the map dog on the map I mean MLB put the Louisville Slugger on the map, but she did mention it in a song. So we really did go big for her for a while. But honestly, like, you know what? Louisville Slugger can live, have its legacy without her. It doesn't need her. Yeah, we don't need her. Bullshit. Fuck her. Or more than she is. Number seven, we have Glamorous Fergie featuring Ludacris. Which I only remember as a soundtrack item on Gossip Girl. The glamorous, blossy, blossy, G-L-A-M. Honestly, I can't believe you I did remember from Gossip Girl because it honestly like brought back the iconic act of spelling out the name of your song that we really lost the art of after B-A-N-A-N-A-S you know what I mean we had a long drought yeah I was I thought I was gonna take it back up to all the way to um but we didn't Jack Harlow just redo this Fergie song or is that a different one no no he did it's like the Jets no that's this one I'm flying first class yeah okay okay that's what I thought we're jack carlo heads because again it all comes back to the old l-o-u-k-y after that we've got never again by kelly clarkson another song that we looked up and just listened to and truly didn't recognize pop punk princess she was definitely being a pop punk princess next up after that we have one of my all times favorites don't matter by akon which is ain't nobody wanna see us together but it don't matter no because i got you yeah so good and then also another song i fucking love number 10 gwen stefani we don't fuck with her anymore either oh yeah but this was a banger oh my gosh the bridge of that where she talks about you left the refrigerator open and that's why you've been feeling so cold that's the reason you've been feeling so cold wild but honestly iconic she was on some shit wait what did she do we don't like her either she's also like she's married to that married again yikes we don't fuck with that um okay now movies sorry yes well a lot of fallen heroes in the context corner this week i'm gonna speed right past this because i don't want to talk about it so don't you dare have a comment are you ready number one i now pronounce you chuck and larry oh i have no nope number two a movie we truly love so much that we have a whole podcast episode that we're in the to love right now, Hairspray. Can you believe? Actually, yeah, Hairspray was like a huge deal, I feel like. It was such a big deal. And Zac Efron was like, oh my god, we were just taking off. We were all just loaded up onto the rocket that was Zac Efron. Nikki Blonkowski had not yet gone viral repeatedly for being in love with him. She was discovered in that fucking Cold Stone Creamery. Like, it was a different time. And Amanda Bynes was like, she wasn't quite in a comeback era, but it was like, she's going to be a press I remember seeing this movie and being like, finally, this is her prestige. Yeah, a real movie. She's going to be the next generation's Allison Janney, also featured in this movie as Amanda Bynes' mom. Number three, we've got Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Another drag. Another bummer. Movie that we enjoyed going to see. For sure, we saw more than once. Owned. Like, yeah. Anyways, moving on. Number four, a real cultural moment of the time because it brought us all of the hot goss around Megan Fox and one Shia LaBeouf. Transformers, the original Transformers. That was a real iconic moment. Shia LaBeouf, I really, everyone has complicated feelings about him. A lot of fallen heroes in this context corner. I do think he had a really weird, crazy, nutso life, and I liked that movie he made about his life, but I just think so much has gone down. You can't beat women. Number five, Ratatouille. Cool. People love that movie. I've never seen that, actually. Number six, Live Free or Die Hard, one of the sequels. Oh. I think Justin Long is in one of the maybe this one it'd be about the right time number seven License to Wed a movie I don't know oh this is like John Krasinski and Rose Byrne and their pastor Robin Williams won't let them get married oh my god they were already a thing in 07 that's so crazy what about 1408 another movie I don't know about number seven I have no idea me either um Evan Almighty the follow-up to Bruce Almighty starring I think Steve Carell yeah oh sorry Steve love you I skipped it I so skipped it Number eight, Knocked Up, a movie that I really do still like. And I think history shows that Katherine Heigl was really treated badly on that set. But we hate not to love Seth Rogen. And so, you know, I refuse to. Sicko is number nine. That's going to be a... Oh, that's a Michael Moore movie. Michael Moore joint. Yeah, for sure. Yeah, I remember that because I went to high school with someone whose family was the, you know, a very prominent health insurance person. business the family run you know midwest health insurance firm and um they were not allowed to watch that movie because it was like obviously very much about their family and their family business and i'm dying to name drop um the insurance company but i won't do you think they've seen it now for sure i mean i will say like at the time when they were like oh i'm not allowed to watch that i was like maybe investigate that because that seems

SPEAKER_01:

not allowed And

SPEAKER_00:

I have to say, I would definitely give them the credit wherever they are that they have since investigated it. Who knows? They were extremely fun family to hang out with. And we were good friends in high school. But that's code for rich. there's that yeah um and then we have oceans 13 which is number 10 and lastly a little bonus pirates of the caribbean at the world's edge or whatever at world's end or something i don't know cut off the last word and i don't care about it final one of the pirates of the caribbean i remember that coming i mean like the pirates of the caribbean movies were huge movies i didn't see a single one after the first one that's not true you saw all three there's more than three i know but i didn't see any after three there was a trilogy that was completed And then they like had to bleed the stone dry. But like, I don't think I saw any sequels. You just did. And you just think that things that happened in the sequels happened in the first one. Okay. I believe you. Um, I recently watched the first one and let me tell you, put me to fuck to sleep. I was like, Orlando Bloom in his prime. Am I imagining that they like pretend to get Keira Knightley? And yeah, that happens in the third one. Let's get into Hairspray. What do you remember about this movie? Um, um I remember that I truly like had to go see it because Zac Efron was in it so it was like the yeah like I was compelled to go see it I remember thinking it was big fun I remember thinking it was like bright lights at the time I didn't know anything about Scientology so I was like so excited that John Travolta was in it I remember being like honestly this is one of those things people think I'm so crazy when I say this but it's like I love Christopher Walken like looking at Christopher Walken's face makes me feel safe for some reason I'm Like that's my uncle in my head. Christopher Walken is a member of my family and I love to hang out with my kooky uncle. And I understand that like he's scary to some, not to me. That's a member of my family. I remember the like, mostly what I remember now when I think about Hairspray is that I had a friend in high school that loved musicals and was like big into musical theater. And then I was like, oh my God, like we should watch Hairspray. And I remember her being like, I've never been allowed to watch Hairspray. And that's how I found out that she came from a super religious household and that apparently there's something in Hairspray that is controversial to super religious people. And I think it might be black people. It might be John Travolta in drag. Oh, John Travolta in drag. Duh, I forgot. And then I also remember that learning that it was a remake of a Broadway play of a movie that that isn't a musical was the first time I was introduced to John Waters,

SPEAKER_02:

the King

SPEAKER_00:

of Trash. Yeah, and what's her name? Lake? Ricky. The original? Ricky Lake. Oh, my God. I love Ricky Lake. She got a talk show later. The actual original movie is really good, and I remember watching it as a kid, but I don't remember where. I feel like they played it at daycare or something. It was something I saw a lot really, really young. Because then by the time I had seen it, the remake happened, it was like a fever dream that I sort of knew some of the characters. That I had never seen before. So I like remembered it. Yeah. And it's a lot more like kitschy and campy and eighties. The first one, the new one is very technical or I remember being very polished. James Broadway, Disney. Yeah. Yeah. James Marsters is in it fresh off his spin of not being the other guy in Spider-Man.

UNKNOWN:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00:

and neither confirm nor deny whether or not he's the other guy what's her name Brittany Snow is in this when she was kind of having a moment I mean not that Brittany Snow didn't continue to have a moment but like she actually did sort of American dreams and then this was like right in line with that yeah yeah it was like she didn't have to change her wardrobe I know yeah Michelle Pfeiffer is in this Michelle Pfeiffer right Queen Latifah is in this yeah that's what I mean Queen Latifah. She's so good in this. Christopher Walken. Yeah. So, so good. Who plays Nikki Blonkowski's mom? Girl. John Travolta. Like John Travolta's wife. John Travolta is a woman. Girl. Christopher Walken is her father and John Travolta is her mother. Aston answered. Case closed. I can't believe you forgot that. John Travolta in drag. Yeah, they're really sweet together too, aren't they? They're so in love together too. Damn. It was kind of ahead of its time in that way. I mean, that's not really because it's based off the 70s or the like 80s movie and that was also played by a man it's played by a very famous drag queen yeah oh my god that was the point like the original one like is camp okay so like they knew what they were doing is what you're saying I said it was camp too I'm not totally being like it's ahead of its time and it's like it's actually like deeply past its time actually like it's time happened and the clock rang 12 and it said holy shit I'm late and it I do think that Amanda Bynes is incredible in this and so like that's what I am saying I guess Amanda Bynes, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron, a lot of people up and coming. But actually I think that's like a great point to kind of like put a cap on all of this is that it's like it's so easy to be like it was ahead of its time when it's like in reality like so many of these ideas and stuff that are controversial now have been around for always like and it's actually like our backsliding into fascism that makes it seem like it's like so unthinkable now yeah and it's like it's so ahead of your time and it's like no actually like we have been pushing through the slog for like 80 years for real remember Roe v. Wade guys like we're not ahead of our time we're in fact behind our time man okay what else I remember thinking all the musical numbers were cute I remember thinking I didn't object to a single thing and it was just like adorable yeah I expect it'll be big fun I remember thinking it was big fun I remember like liking all the songs like knowing all the words to all the songs and I remember that there is a scene where Zac Efron jumps up on the bed and sings to a portrait of Tracy that played behind my eyelids, you guys.

SPEAKER_01:

Link,

SPEAKER_00:

I'm Link. I can't wait. I can't wait

SPEAKER_02:

to get into it.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah. It's really cute. And I do think the messaging is timeless, you know? Well, we'll find out. It's like I hesitate now, having not seen it for several years, to completely co-sign whatever it's going to be about. So true. It's going to be so problematic. I can't wait. You guys know one thing we really don't like to touch is when the messaging of a film is a little tricky, a little sticky, a little messy. We will surely have nothing to talk about. This is our first

SPEAKER_02:

musical, Connor.

SPEAKER_00:

Oh my God. It's our first musical, guys. Second Showing. Welcome to the first musical episode of Second Showing. We're excited to have you with us.

SPEAKER_01:

Moining

SPEAKER_00:

Baltimore. I wake and I look to the door I don't know what the words are the world's gonna wake up

SPEAKER_02:

and see

SPEAKER_00:

Baltimore and it's so funny Honey hooked from the first song the first joint I was like wait this is so every song is a bop you guys is this my most favorite musical of the last 20 years the last 25 years the last 30 years I enjoyed the fuck out of this I do feel like I must have underplayed even to myself how much I liked this when it first came out because I knew every single word every single song like I knew everything that was gonna happen every single joke that happened I was like oh I've seen this movie I think many times yeah I think we had like listened to the soundtrack and I don't do that with a lot of musicals I got welcome to the first musical episode of second showing so exciting we're gonna sing a lot I can feel it I know it's gonna happen I mean I'm inspired I'm tearing up I'm moved like I couldn't get enough it's honestly so earnest in a way that I kind of was expecting it to not be I was like watching this as an adult I'm gonna have a real Princess Bride moment where I'm like oh a lot of these were like jokes but to be honest most of the jokes I think I did get as a kid and it actually is completely earnest which I think it's it's good it's like better for it like I like that it's not making fun of itself like everyone is so well cast incredible from Allison Janney who who's totally underutilized. I mean, Nikki Blonkowski was a nobody. Famously, they found her in that Cold Stone Creamery. We all remember. We have got to have to talk about this. The physicality of her being so short and her sort of like, she's a plump character. That's the whole point. But all of her little proportions are almost like, she's so endearingly cartoony, I feel like. Her little dance moves and stuff. She's just, she's perfect. Her face, all of her emotions. I mean I do it was just a simpler time it was a time before nothing had happened to Amanda Bynes yet nothing had happened to Zac Efron yet his poor jaw you know it was like we were allowed to enjoy things that is my main takeaway is the way that I have been completely like thrust back into my poor yearning middle schooler heart obsession with Zac Efron he just was such a big and this was like okay I would say this was true of him and Amanda Bynes it was like oh they're moving into prestige TV now like Amanda Bynes had done it's a big deal to be in a movie with Colin Firth and like obviously she's the man was a smash hit no question that was still like for kids yeah but like to be in a movie with Michelle Pfeiffer Christopher Walken John Travolta like for Amanda Bynes to rise to that level I think everyone was like okay it's about time and Zac Efron coming off of High School Musical you know yeah it's funny because I remember him taking this role and

SPEAKER_01:

and

SPEAKER_00:

everyone kind of being like this is a natural evolution from high school musical like this is what he's good at and then he actually took the role in Dirty Dancing the remake and then backed out and I remember reading about it in the news that he was like I don't want to be typecast I don't want this to be the only thing I did and being really surprised to read that because I was like well why not like this is your this is your niche dude like people love you in these roles like take the movie and then of course Dirty Dancing was like whatever not good Julianne Hough so So it turned out to be okay. But I think Miles Teller, really young, is in that movie actually. I feel like what I remember most about him being in this movie was true of him and true of Amanda Bynes, where it's like whenever you're a fan of something that is like childhood media, like I feel this way about Dylan O'Brien too. And then there's like a moment where you're watching it where you're like, I know they're good. Like I know they could be so famous. They're transcending the material. And then they get to kind of like elevate out of the material that they're in into like– blockbuster like this was a huge summer blockbuster movie and you're so excited and you're like they are gonna be and it's also like longevity you know what I mean you can't be in High School Musical forever you have to become a real actor or retire and so it's like this idea that you'll be able to go into another arena and be like I'm gonna get to spend so much time with Zac Efron from here on out like he's gonna be famous famous and frankly like he is famous famous like we've known him for way longer than absolutely anybody else in any other Disney movie you know what I mean yeah I just it was fun to return to a time before you really knew how everyone was going to turn out I mean Brittany Snow is adorable in this although she's horrible horribly mean but she's so sweet and she since has like really had a lot to say about this time of being a child actor in her life and she wrote a movie about her like debilitating eating disorder trigger warning and so now we just have all this information about these people but it was like before it was just a simpler time And it was kind of nice. It was nice to retreat back a little. And the music is so great. And everyone is really giving it their all. I don't think anyone falls flat. I really don't think there's a single person who doesn't turn it in. Another top line thought I have to say, you cannot take your eyes off of James Marston in this movie. He is so committed. And it feels like no one else could have played him. Again, it's the same Nikki Blonkowski thing. It's the whole movie is so well cast. They're almost... on the teetering on the edge of cartoon you know what I mean it's like they almost feel animated they're so polished and sparkly and like he is so Disney Prince coded he's so Disney Prince coded exactly that it's like for sure perfect match with this like 50s smooth talking like perfect television guy yeah and then it's like you're like who even all the way down to like Lil Inez is like almost cartoon like they're so perfectly styled but it's like who could have done the James Morrison role in my head I was like current day it's like Glenn Powell maybe like almost like on the edge of sterile it's so sort of like sparkly white toothy grin like it's almost satire it's just everyone just did so good it was so fun to watch do you have any what do you want to have top line thoughts yeah I mean one of my top line thoughts is like everybody does so good in this movie and like while some people are tragic figures moving forward a lot of the people that I think did so good in this movie now it's like we can't even truly

SPEAKER_02:

fuck with because it's like you can't fuck with James Marsden Like you can't really fuck with, I mean, it's hard to say this because it's my childhood, but it's like John Travolta's,

SPEAKER_00:

you cannot trust Scientologists. And he is so good in this and in everything. And like the added layers of him being John Travolta. And then the idea that like Edna used to be this great dancer, but is now like overweight and can't dance anymore. Like, you know what I mean? Is all in there in casting John Travolta in that role. Committed, committed, committed, committed. Completely committed. But there's like a meta aspect to it that makes it so fun to watch if you like know who John Travolta is you like know it's Danny Zuko under there it's so fun yeah yeah yeah and it's just like it's crazy on one hand what you said earlier where it's like and now knowing more about like however many years out knowing more about all these people the way that that impacts reading it but also it's the saddest part and this is a happy movie like this was a joyous movie I was literally kicking oh my god joy from the beginning to the end just joy but it is kind of like sobering to watch it and remember what it felt like to have it come out at first and be like yeah like body positivity like more diversity in movies more diversity on the runway like in terms of literally the themes of this movie in terms of body positivity and just like people of color and then be like and here we are 10 20 years out from that and like we're absolutely headed back to before even this yeah I will I will agree but I will say I think you can take it for I think you can be grateful that in this universe for this two hours it feels real you know like I was able to watch it without that cynicism and I think you're totally right I think but I didn't feel it didn't wasn't a cloud over it for me that it's like yeah but this didn't stick like in this universe in this two hours it really does feel like you changed the world a little and that's a credit to the cast and to the production it just does truly feel like from another time like a more optimistic time. Oh, I don't even know. I don't know. I mean, I think that's completely valid. I know what you're saying. But I do think it's successful in what it set out to do on me. It worked on me. Oh yeah, can we talk about James Marsden for a second? Yeah, yeah. What do you mean when you say that? I'm curious what you mean. James Marsden signed the letter against Drake Bell. Yep, that's what I think too. In support of Drake Bell's assailant. Sexual assailant. Yes. Yeah, I'll never forget that. It's so bad. He's so talented and here's the craziest part. We've said it before. The same is true for Taryn Killam who Amanda Bynes is very close to or worked very closely with. You need to renounce that letter you just need to you have to say I made a mistake no one is going I think pushing it away and shoving it down in a world where you were a 31 year old man when you wrote a letter that said that little kid is lying even if it's not that little kid is lying it's my friend doesn't deserve to be punished for his crimes against a child you were 31 when you wrote that now you're in your 50s or whatever you need to renounce that letter and I just can't think he's a very good person until he does and that goes for everyone that did that there are people who have renounced their letters it's as simple as that you know that's the right thing to do anyway thing to do also it is a little note that the crimes we are talking about occurred on the Amanda show so it's like it is kind of weird to see Amanda Bynes and James Marsden team not even teamed back up because I don't know what association they ever had before this but both in this place but it's a weird connection people don't talk about it enough we should tweet or something I don't know so many thoughts and And then obviously John Travolta's association with Scientology, which we think is just a hugely abusive cult, obviously. It's crazy, man. Nobody gets out alive. This is a movie that features a lot of what you would call child stars. And it's no coincidence that there's so much baggage, I think, that has happened since. But again, you know what? For these two hours, it really does build a really sparkly, magical, joyous, joyous universe. Optimistic. Really optimistic. optimistic and joyful yeah and also like because though I do think the whole thing is about like looking to the future about like the new day that's coming so very optimistic another thing like I'm sorry to pile on a girl but the like recent virality of Nikki Bronski I was thinking about this movie coming up as it was happening but like a couple weeks ago or maybe even months ago now she was going viral because she's been doing like cameos living in the claim to fame of being in this movie And people find that very silly now that it's obviously been like 20 years. People started bringing up all of these other interviews of when this movie came out. Like that she was always wild. I don't understand why she didn't have a career. I mean, I really don't. Except that there just aren't roles. I mean, that makes perfect sense to me. This is a one in a million role that comes along. You know, obviously they didn't change, spoiler alert, they didn't change the world with that. Courtney Collins dance, you know what I mean, performance. and like obviously for like a very short specific stature person there's gonna be very limited roles but like

SPEAKER_02:

a hundred percent

SPEAKER_00:

I am currently googling to figure out more about Nikki Blonsky because I was like why was she going viral and the answer that I'm coming across is that

SPEAKER_02:

she is blacklisted from Hollywood for calling a woman the

SPEAKER_00:

n-word on a plane what yes and so apparently it is understandably no one wants to work with her and so she is on cameo selling messages and every new message is like some new ridiculous thing like the other thing that i would say is she did recently i think last year come out as a lesbian that's truly like the least interesting of any of the things we've uncovered i know so funny it's like all right tight um okay these are incredible top line thoughts i have to say this is 20 minutes of us being like the fucking wackiness okay from the jump good morning Baltimore Jordan give us a little taste of what that sounds like if you want to re-up um basically good morning Baltimore is her running through the streets of Baltimore professing her love this is like a pretty classic ironic scene because what you see of Baltimore is like pretty run down but still seems to be like warm and blue community from the first moment you realize how optimistic and joyous she is like she is not held down by anything she's just like this be beautiful place my beautiful home and I have to say I truly giggled when she misses the bus because she's dancing and so the dump truck takes her when they do the reveal of her riding on top of the dump truck I was like I'm in heaven this is my favorite movie I'm inspired I'm tearing up she is running down the street saying hello to the flasher she's like gotta get my morning round say hello to the flasher and the man in the coat that is the flasher is John Waters the original oh so great the first one that's such a great little tip I didn't even clock it she gets to school and she's got like a mean teacher who's like your hair's too tall and she's like I can't have flat hair hanging on my cheeks and everyone's like oh my god you're wild yeah the teacher takes offense because her hair ugly it's just so funny the reason she gets in trouble is because the boys behind her can't see the blackboard and I have to say boys that's your problem sit in the front you guys you know what I mean you didn't mean it she's sitting in class she's miserable the clock starts ticking, tick, tick, tick, tick. And it was really giving my favorite musical of the last 20, 30, 100 years, High School Musical 2. Yeah, truly. Summer. High School Musical 2. There's very few things in this life where a sequel surpasses the original. One of them is High School Musical 2. It is High School Musical 2. Also famously, one of my favorite action movies of all time, Maze Runner 3. That's a Dylan O'Brien shout out. Yeah, it's a Dylan O'Brien joint. So she grabs her best friend, Amanda Bynes, and they're running home from school. And you're like, what are they trying to do? What are they like? for and they get home and they throw open the door at her house and it's the Corny Collins show which is like a local cable TV show and it's like kids are dancing which I'm like how did all these kids get there in time if they barely got there to watch it they get out of school I guess they get let out of school to shoot and this is where you meet I mean Brittany Snow and her mom Michelle Pfeiffer who works on the show and you get the famous famous and I'm all the intro to the kids I'm Link which I think recently went viral all over again because they were doing the promo for um Joey King's movie with Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman which by the way I found hilarious oh my

SPEAKER_02:

god

SPEAKER_00:

and she was like I was obsessed with Zac Efron when I was a little kid and she does the I'm Link thing and it's just like so obvious how much older than her he is it's so funny um anyway this is from that and Penny and Tracy are huge fans Tracy's in love with Link how could Could she not be? This is where we get Amanda Bynes' first line, already an absolute hilarious line. She says, my mom says I'm not allowed to perspire. Yeah. I mean, and once you meet her mom, you're like, that tracks. James Marsden is unmatched. I mean, no one else could do it. And I already said the thing about Glenn Powell, who came to mind. But his sort of just sterile shininess is so Ken Dolly. It's just really perfect. Brittany Snow is clocking in. You just can't take your eyes off James Marsden, though. he goes it's true and the way he does the like pronunciation while he sings you never get to college but you still look it's like he is inspired by the Danny Zuko of it all it's like all so evident the sort of references you know and then just the sort of yeah the like I'm singing about like it seems like I'm singing about one thing but if you listen to the lyrics I'm actually singing about another thing I'm talking about like good upstanding neighborhood kids but I'm actually yeah totally ditch school yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then this is when we get bounding into the room doing some ironing. We get the John Travolta intro. The

SPEAKER_02:

real John Travolta.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah. John Travolta intro. Is it Edna? Edna. Yeah, her mom Edna. Edna Turnblad. And she is pretty incredible to behold. And it's time, you know, the show's on and the girls are excited. And Penny's mom stops by to pick up her laundry. She says, girls, turn that down. I'm trying to arn. I'm trying to arn. Oh, yeah, the commitment to that. to the accent is like truly only coming from Edna too. And she's the only one that has an accent. No one else. But it's so perfect. I wrote so many quotes down. Penny's mom comes in to pick up her laundry because Miss Edna runs a laundry from out of their house, which is, I mean, she's very entrepreneurial. She's a business woman. That comes up later. Yes, she absolutely is. And she asked for$3 from Penny's mom to pick up her undergarments. And She says, that seems a little steep. To which Edna says, some of your personal stains require pounding with a rock. And I was like, oh, the moms are getting into it. Of course, she has no idea that Penny's at the Turnblatt. She's not allowed to be there. And Nikki Blonsky tries to get her mom to STFU and zip it and not reveal. But which is, you know, such as mom code. Edna's like, are you trying to tell me that Penny doesn't have permission to be here? And then, of course... um Allison Janney's like Penny and she comes out from behind they have Amanda Bynes in those pigtails the whole movie and it really she looks great it just so works yeah she pops up from the head and shaking her head her like amazing physical comedy she yells out without the show I have nothing yeah it's so good and then uh Allison Janney says having nothing builds character Vince character yeah it's so funny because if you remember in the pre-watch I said the main thing I remember about this movie is I had a friend that I found out was like a part of a extreme kind of like religious conservative household because she wasn't allowed to watch this movie and then it's like girl you're represented in this movie like this has your name on it actually um so Amanda Bynes gets dragged out by her pigtails and we go to the show and you meet all the kids everyone is stuffing their bra and Michelle Pfeiffer's having none of it they're stuffing their their junk the boys are stuffing their junk the girls are stuffing their bra Michelle Pfeiffer's like the station manager yeah she's running it like a Tight, tight ship. Yeah. Yeah. Did you notice that Brittany Snow almost drops a casual whore? And I was like, oh, we're back in 2006 and I can feel it because the word whore is getting thrown around. Oh, yeah. But she she

SPEAKER_02:

cleans it up when she sees Link coming.

SPEAKER_00:

I also think it's funny that they don't actually let her say whore. They cut her off. She's about to say it. And then Link comes over and she changes. And I'm like, maybe we were already moving away from it. But there's no cursing in this movie. Oh, yeah. This is like a PG-13, maybe. So Penny and... Tracy at this point are watching like on the TVs outside the TV shop. Because they're not allowed, yeah, to watch it in either of their homes. Yeah, it's so funny. And they've learned that fun-loving, free-wheeling Brenda has to take nine months off being on the Courtney Collins show. Yeah. So they're hosting an audition to find her replacement. To replace her, I know. And he says, we're looking for someone just as fun-loving, but maybe not quite as free-wheeling. Not quite so free-wheeling. And it's funny because Tracy laments that she's such a better dancer than Anne who's played by Brittany Snow and Amanda Bynes agrees with her with a shake of her head in the phrase plastic and spastic so good plastic little spastic it's so great and I'm like what a good friend she's so she is honestly underutilized very much so I think very much so but every time the camera's on her she's just exactly as perfect as you've come to expect her to be honestly I feel like at this point we were taking her for granted we were like she's gonna be hilarious in this and we weren't giving her yeah the star making turns she truly deserved Tracy goes home and she's like mom I'm gonna try out for that show I'm gonna skip school tomorrow and I'm gonna go down there and I think this is a very sweet scene because Edna's like you don't want to do that you're not gonna get mixed up in that she's like I want to follow my dreams and Edna's like I used to have dreams too it's so great I once had a dream I don't know coin operated laundromat but I came down from that cloud real quick she's so I mean John Travolta's hilarious in this but Tracy says to her mom I don't want to be a laundress I want to be famous and I wrote down this is why we have a generation of influencers and no plumbers yeah and no plumbers no for real electricians and Christopher Walken shows up her dad who runs the joke shop that downstairs and Edna appeals to her dad you know I don't want to hurt her but girls like us don't get on shows like that which too in Edna's defense has historically been true stays true actively stays true Amber and her mom like fighting against this change but and her dad's like you know what honey I'll talk to her I'll talk to her the Mom and daughter Such a good team Such a good example Of two people partners Wilbur's played by Christopher Walken And truly you've never Seen two parents More into each other I don't think you see Christopher Walken Like this very much either Like this is like You've never seen him Like this before And he assures Edna That he's gonna go talk To little Tracy And you know He'll make it right And he goes in there And if it didn't turn My heart When he says to her You gotta go for it I know Because you expect him To like back. No, I have so much grits for walking in person. Wait, Connor, what did he say? What did he say? Well, then you gotta go for it. Up to you. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's what he said. And she's like, if this is your dream, then you can't let anybody stop you. It's so good.

UNKNOWN:

Okay.

SPEAKER_00:

so Tracy's like hell yeah with the support of her dad Edna just kind of is like throws her hands up and I was like oh whatever you two a couple of dreamers thank God she has her dad honestly it's just like the sweetest little family you've ever seen honestly they balance each other out they need each other there's such good parents I know and we have a whole musical number about it coming up that's one of I think the most romantic song of all time and she's like she cuts class you know with the blessing of her dad and she goes right on down to that station and pennies there to support Michelle Pfeiffer's doing her song about being a pageant queen and how yeah but how's the song go Jay when I was Miss Baltimore crabs yeah yeah yeah that's right the other girls I thought they they powdered the cups but I screwed the judges she's basically just reliving her glory days and sort of giving you a inside look which is the whole reason she has this job yeah on why she is like kind of holding so hard to the past and like running such a tight ship I don't really like that they wrote that in there though because I'm like they needed to make her like slutty and cheap and I'm like well she's clearly beautiful we have eyes couldn't she have just been the winner because people are shallow and mean people win stuff sometimes I kind of hate that it was like interesting I don't think of it as being cheap I think of it as like being conniving that it's like she's like ruthless yeah she's conniving but why couldn't she be like I took out the girl next to me you know like she could have been conniving without it being like I fucked everyone ha ha ha like I don't know sometimes I feel like they have to take beautiful women down a peg and I just don't love it but she is conniving that is a characteristic you'll want to remember but especially in a world where we live in a world where just being beautiful like Michelle Pfeiffer would have won it for you I do think the whole song is her sort of like listing the things that she did you know what I mean that were like less than savory yeah I think it's less like that I screwed a bunch of people and more like that I cheated that like I include Well, she brings it up again later about risking communicable diseases. And I was just like, I just don't like this as like a character thing about her, but whatever. So there's a burn where Brittany Snow is like, how are you feeling about it being on live TV? And Nikki Blonsky is like, I think I can cope. And Brittany Snow and all her friends are like, why? It's not shot in CinemaScope. And it's like a really good rhyme, but it's a truly brutal burn. Wait, OK, Connor, my whole life I have never understood what this meant. CinemaScope, I think it was like prior to IMAX it was like this is shot on like so they show it on like the major major big screen oh because it's like TV and not movies yeah I was like it's shot in color I don't understand I was like so my whole life yeah I think it means like widescreen oh okay okay okay and the way that neither one of us will be googling to confirm that like we're just gonna have this conversation like there's no way to find out the truth honestly I'm 20 years in now like I don't need to know yeah What I love is there's so much meanness and everyone is really bullying Tracy and they keep cutting back to Penny who's just bopping. I know. She's just dancing. I will say like regardless of like whether you're into the message or not, obviously she's a bad person. But Michelle Pfeiffer is like fully eating this. She is slaying it down. Everyone. No one doesn't turn in a performance. And they asked the whole song kind of culminates in this question where they asked Tracy, would you swim in an integrated pool? And she was like, yeah, I would love to, you know, whatever. And I think for context, like there's been this ongoing conversation about how like they only have people of color on the show once a month. They have their like own special day once a month, but most of the time it's just white kids. So like as part of the interview process for this tryout, they're asking her like, would you integrate with, you know, black people at a swimming pool to which Tracy enthusiastically is like, for sure, duh. Integration's the way of the future. And she has expressed that like the day the one day a month where only black kids dance on the show is like her favorite day of the month and that every day should be like that anyway now they're like they've got a reason to sort of be like besides the fact that they're just completely fat shaming her in song what is it what is the lyric where she's like if your size weren't enough your last answer just blew it she's honestly really giving the like evil witch from the little mermaid like this whole song oh my god they should all be on Broadway every single one of them should be on Broadway um and then when they leave you know she gets turned away and Penny looks to her friend and says I think they secretly left you which is so funny but also not only is it so funny it's also totally true because we know what's coming it is completely totally true and it also is like there's just such a sweet earnestness and like optimism to every throwaway line they can give in this movie where Penny's like you know what I think it's all going to be okay so then they're at school and remind me how does she get detention back into school because she's like I guess I'm not like staying late to audition for the Courtney Collins show and they notice that she snuck in late so she gets detention and this is the best thing that has ever happened to Tracy Turnblad. Honey if that didn't change her life that detention slip. Because she meets the star of this movie in detention she meets Honey Seaweed. He's so amazing and at first she's like she shows up and with her little optimistic attitude where she loves everyone and she's like first of all detention rips oh it's the hottest club in Baltimore yeah and it's like you know take from it what you will but not subtly the only people in detention are people of color which actually like so their school is integrated so their school is integrated but obviously the classes are still segregated at their school the classes may be segregated I don't even think the classes are segregated I think it's telling that their kids are treated differently that detention is exclusively 100% I don't think we know for sure that the classes aren't integrated but the fact that detention is filled only with people of color tells you is giving you a little hint about their treatment in an integrated school for sure it's just occurring to me right now that their school must be integrated in order for them to be in the same detention as her obviously they were dealing with integration that's what this movie is about but it's like it's kind of surprising to me that the broadcast network isn't integrated but their high school is I guess it's not to me I think the school system was one of the first things that was like man mandated and then everything else because it's privately owned they could just decide as at their will you know what i mean it's totally different so detention is where it's at and they're not necessarily friendly to her right away like some people are like what are you looking at or whatever but honey when she starts shaking that tail feather this is the definition of that meme where it's like we're rocking with mark because mark's rocking with us like yeah she starts shaking ass and no one can ignore it and then especially not seaweed they're like unofficial leader who's like honey you can roll with us if you're gonna throw it it back like that can I say this you're gonna rock up Blonsky is giving the sexiest eyes to see I was like the sparks are flying between Tracy and seaweed and that is just an absolutely like untapped storyline like we are just not worried about that at all but she is looking him up and down licking her lips and I was like okay but that's what I like about them is like inherently like there isn't a tiny element of dirty dancing in this where it's like the people of color have embraced more like rhythm and blues and stuff and that's where Nikki Blon Blonsky's heart is so it's like no she of course she and seaweed are platonic and seaweed will ultimately fall for Amanda Bynes who wouldn't but I like that there is this sort of sexual tension in just their friendship because it shows they're both playful in the same way and they both have that same sort of soul that they're talking about where it's like they're down to like oh this podcast is pro flirting that's been established it's pro flirting for sure but the best part about this is link makes a point to spy on detention and he spots true Tracy in there and he throws open the door and it's like because it just looks like a blast in there and he's a kid and he can tell that she can dance as well yeah yeah

SPEAKER_01:

yeah

SPEAKER_00:

yeah he notices and he throws open the door and he's like if you come down to the corny Colin show and you dance like that for corny he's gonna put you on the show and he says sorry little lady hope I didn't dent your do and honey you guys he throws a wink at her that I'm still recovering from personally so good here's why I love this so much because it's just a detail but like he knows that corny Collins is progressive he and we don't even know that yet like we get a moment where corny Collins is like talking to Michelle Pfeiffer and is like get the fuck off your high horse like this is the future whatever but links in like inside knowledge of the inner workings of the show and how to get around the judges and the auditions which are held by Michelle Pfeiffer and Amber but that corny if he sees something he likes if it's rare and special that'll get her in and it really is that tip that changes everything completely and I think it is important important to call out it's not the last time he'll do it I'll call it another time too but um so then we get I can hear the bells which is just amazing it's so I can hear the bells singing I can hear the bells oh my god cheers rising something like that but the best part is when she keeps going just knocking people over and going listen I can hear the bells it's so funny she's like my dad will smile I can hear the bells as he walks me down the aisle I mean it's just a fucking blast at one point she's like like spying on the boys bathroom as they comb their hair yeah it's it's really she is so good she's just so good and he's really cute she goes into the teacher's lounge and it's like a fucking madman set in there just filled with smoke it's so great and it's just like such a funny little nod to the 60s also I just want to call out like you guys the way I like I'll never it over it he's got his like black hair he's got his black suit he's clearly giving like johnny cash like his little single curl like you like yeah

SPEAKER_02:

it

SPEAKER_00:

really was a

SPEAKER_02:

whole

SPEAKER_00:

thing and then she said there's another line i wrote down that i loved where she was like we'll go park in his car won't go all the way but i'll go pretty far yeah it's so good oh good um and then it ends with her seeing him and you Amber like flirting before they leave together. So it's like clearly he's still with Amber. Well, he don't like her that much. Yeah. He doesn't like her that much. That stuff. She doesn't like him that much. It's like they are in an arranged situation. Also, the whole thing is weirdly reminiscent of High School Musical when there was you and me. I'm sorry. Just singing through the high school about Zac Efron. Yeah. No, I mean, Zac Rosenstein is like, this is where I thrive. Like, I'm familiar. He's in his strike zone. So we go down to the Corny Collins show and Zac Efron Link is singing Ladies' Choice And it's a lady's choice And my favorite Fucking part about this Okay this is something That jumped out to me In this moment Because it's like They're kind of giving Zac Efron a moment He's on stage He's a very serious Showman Business kid Or whatever And I'm I'm forced to be reminded That they did replace His voice With Drew Sealy In the first season Of High School Musical Right? Oh yeah Drew Sealy does his part So it's like He wasn't originally Selected out of the crowd Because of his Musical theater Sort of like No but he kept Yeah, but then because... from the stage so that i can like almost continue like amplify that spotlight that's on you and it just works so well and i feel like it's even more than that it's like he is psyched to see her there he has suggested that she come he is doing his elvis presley impersonation he is bumping and grinding up on the stage but more than that it's like he's feeding off of her dance moves as she gets more into the dance moves that she's learned from seaweed he gets more into his own performance there is like a great scene where she like um kisses her hand and throws it at him and he like catches it and then goes straight into a solo like they're feeding off of each other that's what I mean they're feeding off each other there's a natural chemistry and it's two it's both of them right like you mentioned this but not only is link helping her he got her there and he's performing practically to her so that she looks good on the dance floor but she also asked seaweed if she can borrow his dance moves because of course he's not allowed to do them on camera and he's like you know what get him out there when she walks and they're segregated. And it's so sweet. It's like both of these boys are like channeling through her. They're rooting for her and it really comes across and she really does them both so proud. I love it. That's what I'm saying. This whole movie is like this. It's just like, fuck, how can you not just be so inspired and happy and joyous? And then in one of my most favorite sort of like bolt of lightning. Well, there is an element to it where it's like Tracy is doing what Amber and her trio of girls do to the trio of girls from that like under Queen Latifah like stealing their move yeah that's true appropriating financially profiting off of it that like that's at play here in this movie and it's not super addressed and Tracy does turn out to be

SPEAKER_02:

obviously like a huge ally to their

SPEAKER_00:

movie but I think the main difference though Jay and I think they do it on purpose is she reluctantly is doing it not even reluctantly I mean she's happy to do it she asked Seaweed's permission and Seaweed encourages her To do it I'm not saying that erases it But I do know you made that choice Specifically for that reason And It's just it's nice to see Both these boys sort of like throw their weight Behind her and then have it really really show off And be worth it and there is this just Bolt of lightning for me seen Right after where Penny is running down the Street freaking out so excited And she shows up the turnblats to show Them that Tracy actually made it on TV And to see her parents see her and See Penny see her parents to see her is like truly one of my most favorite parts of this movie.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh my God. Edna's so

SPEAKER_00:

excited. She immediately bursts out and is like, I can't believe I almost didn't let her audition. Like this is where she belongs. She's so proud. I know. Cause now after the link intro, I'm link they've added now and I'm Tracy. It's so cute. And she's got a new hairdo. They're doing like her interview because she's the latest edition. She's the new kid that joined. Penny even says she's going to be a regular and she's so excited. And Tracy, Tracy, is like you know tell us a little bit about yourself and she says I watch the Corny Collins show and I do absolutely nothing else which I love I also love before they turn on the Corny Collins show there's a little bit where you just get a little snippet of the fact that Edna doesn't believe the moon landing is real oh my god it's so great she's like it's just a Hollywood movie set you expect me to believe he's really up there

SPEAKER_02:

and then she turns

SPEAKER_00:

it's such a great little throwaway but also Are you ready for another Christopher Walken impression? Because he says, Edna says, to think I almost stopped her from getting her dream. And Christopher Walken says, and here she is, a local daytime TV. And he's got his arms going. It's so great. So James Marsden is getting serious. After this little musical number, we finally get to see some of his off-screen personality, and I love it. He's having a meeting with the head of the sponsor. Oh, wait, wait, wait. One more thing. When they're giving her her interview, they ask her, what do you want to be when you grow up, Tracy? And she says, I want to be the first female president or a rockette. Which, hey, duality, honey. They both take, I would say, the same amount of dedication. I know. One in a million chances. Yeah. But James Marsden's having this meeting with the head of the sponsor, the hairspray sponsor, Aquanet or whatever it's called, and then the manager of the station, which is Michelle Pfeiffer, and And they're arguing, right, about the fact that they've cast Tracy. And it's such a great, again, you have to think that Link had the inclination that Corny would be able to stand up to them because Corny's like, she is rocking. This is where it's going. You know, I think we need to do. Sales are up.

SPEAKER_02:

I mean, the man says,

SPEAKER_00:

I want the chubby

SPEAKER_02:

communist

SPEAKER_00:

off the show, which is so funny because at what point did she display herself to be a communist ever? No, wait, no, wait, no. She says something specific, actually. Now that you say that, we do need to, she says something in the interview that's like. Oh, no, no, I know. She says, I wish that we, the show was integrated. I wish it was like the day that the black kids get to dance on TV I wish they were here every day and I think everyone's kind of like whoop live TV you gotta love it but it's like even that's not communist it's like they've just lumped her like one physical aspect in with everything that they think is like alternative or counterculture different from no no no that's why he says the common that's why he says the communist thing he says no I believe you that is why he says communist about the fact that she wants integration but it's like communism and integration no obviously Obviously, but he's a moron. I don't have anything to do with each other. I'm saying it's not a random. He's selected that to just be that she's like progressive. You know what I mean? That's what I'm saying. It's like he's just lumping all these things he doesn't like in together to be like, and this is what Tracy represents. Even though it's like, you know what? I bet Tracy is a communist. Yeah. But I love how serious James Marsden is getting in this where he's like, oh, this is what's cool. This is right. Like, why? He was like, you can either push it away or you can rock out to it. And she's like, well, I think we need a new host. And he's like, good luck replacing Corny Collins from a Corny Collins show and like walks away. And I was like, oh, I fucking love him. And that's on using your privilege. Yeah, that's on using your privilege. Listen up, guys. They easily could have made the exact same character use that sort of like egotistical arrogance for evil. We've seen it time and time and time and time again. But the fact that he's like, I'm actually also an artist and you won't be getting in my way of like keeping up with like what's fucking amazing and cool about what I do. And I love it. I love you guys. a little snippet of him and that he's on the right side of history but um totally totally agree um we then switch to um

SPEAKER_02:

a little bit of amber what we yeah oh my god she's a runaway

SPEAKER_00:

hit it's her dad's shop is selling all these like wigs and all these like action figures she's an overnight sensation she's a huge hit and honestly it just goes to show that like truly it takes all kinds like diversity is the best way to succeed um and that people actually appreciate seeing themselves on tv and like feeling included in spaces they historically hadn't been included like hello yeah and like merit is actually like a good way to judge whether or not you should let someone have a job yeah imagine um but we get right into the thing we were referencing earlier which is amber and two of her friends sing a song on the corny colin show called the new girl in town oh yeah in reference to tracy coming to town and honestly this song is a smash hit not so much when amber and her friends do it but when they show the trio of girls who wrote it and are slaying it down they intercut between them and Queen Latifah's day and they intercut those that trio of girls with Brittany Snow and her trio of girls and Brittany Snow of course they've like whitened it up and like made it like sort of dinky and then yeah which is a real thing that happened I'm sure everyone knows like all the time yeah all the time and at the end of the performance Michelle Pfeiffer says to Queen Latifah how dare you do the same song that my song my girls did that my daughter Tifa looks at her and is like they wrote the song which again you mentioned earlier it's like the theft is just constant

SPEAKER_02:

and they're so much better at it the song is so good when they do it with the little the new girl in town

SPEAKER_00:

okay I have a question for you at the end of the new girl in town does the new girl in town get hit by the moving truck and die okay I did not know that until this I know that's the funniest part they're like look out look out look out yeah exactly exactly but we go back to tracy's house and they get news that the hefty hideaway wants to sponsor mr pinky he wants her to come down there and her to be a spokesgirl and be on billboards and they i mean edna and tracy are both absolutely freaking out they're like oh my god tracy wants her mom to come with her and wants her to represent her her business interests with mr pinky and she says who's gonna look out for me better than my mom which i think is hilarious in the considering like the breadth of child stars in this movie to have her say who's gonna look out for me better than my mom and it's like historically literally anyone she's like oh my god do you think I'll get a free caftan out of the deal and Edna goes I think the perks like caftans have to be negotiated oh my gosh this movie makes me cry every time we did there is a little during the montage of the new girl in town you do get this moment where you find out that Tracy continues to hang out in detention and Penny comes down to visit her and is like she doesn't need a detention slip she's with me and they let her in and you get Penny and Seaweed's meet cute where they like see each other for the first time it's really really cute and it's just a quick moment during that it's just a little setup yeah and you also get like a bit of a moment where people are getting detention slips to try to hang out with Tracy yes and it's like it's like the hottest club in town it's the hottest club in Baltimore there's a line outside it's so great but so we move into once Tracy you know Edna's very reluctant to leave the house she says she hasn't left the house since 1951 she says I haven't left that neighbors haven't seen me since I was a size 10 it's very sad and but it's also like Tracy's like who the fuck cares we're gonna be rich we're gonna be decked out we're gonna be that you know the spokesperson and mostly she's talking about like the world is changing like people use like I understand that people judge each other based on how they're looked and based on sort of like things they think they can perceive by looking at you but we are moving into a new world that the 60s we're moving into a new world where people aren't going to care so much about that and people who've traditionally been marginalized are like gonna and it's so have more opportunities she says mom the world's changing and you're really gonna like it it's oh yeah and so we get this song you know welcome to the 60s oh my god and then what's the name of it is ben stiller's dad who plays the guy who owns the hideaway but he's also the dad from seinfeld yeah he's the dad from seinfeld and we're just like not gonna look up his name because you guys and you know who he is why don't you guys know his name you know why don't you guys why are you asking us um it's so sweet and they get down there they do a whole song and dance all the way down there she convinced her she looks amazing in all of her outfits too i'm like she clearly knows how to like turn a fucking look no matter her size and um also i want to say this too because connor and i recently went to go see death becomes her on broadway and an essential element of that play which is also like big fun an essential element of that play is that both of the women are like drop dead, distractingly gorgeous. And like, they've both got to be like size 12, size 14. And they are playing up the sort of like curvaceous, big sort of like body that they have. And I was thinking about that while we were watching this movie. And it was like, you really, like beauty standards really are fucking made the fuck up. Because like, big girls have always laid down. Yeah. Like big girls have always gotten it done. And like, it just was interesting to watch these two musicals so close to each other where one in one that body type is like so heavily celebrated as like an obvious thing of attraction and then in this movie it's like so obviously something that's keeping Edna inside her home for 10 years at a time you know what I mean yeah and you can't I don't think you can argue they're exactly the same body type but I do think to your point there's like inflections and nuances to these like standards that we all pretend are you know yeah unchanging So they get down to the store and Edna immediately takes to her role as agent. And she's going, uh-uh, we want a non-exclusive content. And we want this. She says, Tracy, eat your donuts. Yeah, it's so great. She's like, you go shop and I'm going to handle this. She immediately is such a good little businesswoman. And when he won't negotiate a number down, she goes, throw in a bustier and you got it. And he says, he's like, double D, 54 double D. And she goes, triple E. Triple E. I hit the mother load. So fucking great. And then when she comes out dancing, like, I mean, they do the makeover of Edna, right? And they have her get dressed in this beautiful pink sequined dress. And she comes out dancing and she does almost like a little Danny Zuko. You know, this is where you get to see John Travolta in his full power. Like this is him singing. This is him dancing. And he is doing his little like falsetto. I mean, he's just so talented and it's shining through in this too yeah so it's really adorable and sweet they both are feeling themselves so much they both look gorgeous I mean Edna's won over like Edna's psyched about the 60s she feels beautiful she can't wait to get home and see Wilbur in her like sparkly dress and Tracy gets sort of a matching dress and they go for cake after they're eating pie at the diner and they run into who else Amber and her mom these little bitches Michelle Pfeiffer yeah and it's horrible they pretend to be polite Like, you know, Tracy introduces them. This is Amber and her mom. And she says, oh, you must have a new dress on. And at first, you know, Edna thinks she's being complimented until Michelle Pfeiffer says, well, you'll stop traffic. And I mean, the change is immediate. Edna is like, I'm taking this dress back. Like, I look like a crazy person. And what I love about this is Tracy responds and she says, mom, don't listen to her. She's upset because I'm going to beat her daughter at the pageant. And she's mad. And I love that Tracy, that's when Edna looks up and goes, you are? Really? Yeah, like, wait, you actually might win? Oh my God, it's so good. She's totally distracted from her own upset because she's like, you've got a shot at that? And it's really exciting. But it's like, that's the thing you're upset about, right? Is you think people are laughing at you and in reality, she's only making you think that because she's nervous that they aren't. That people love you and they want you to succeed. I'm killing her daughter in this competition mom that's why she's yeah yeah it's so great and the way that Tracy continually picks up her mom too it's just like so inspiring and like the dad really does a good job in that in certain scenes too but it continues on in the next scene because they're at school and Amber in the back of the class is just I mean telling everyone shit about Tracy that she like hooked up with the entire football team that she like is has to go to special ed like crazy shit and link is like Amber stop like why are you doing this you know know what I mean and then because he sort of sticks up for her and that really emboldens her to be even meaner she you know when she gets busted talking by the teacher she's like oh my god Tracy you know our teacher does not have breasts and like holds up a note that she clearly drew and frames Tracy but this is like it's all worth it it's all turns out for the best because of course the teachers like Tracy get your ass in detention to which Tracy's like literally no problem I would love to go and on my way there stands up because he feels it's Wrong she's being punished And everyone turns To look at him and the teacher's like can I help you link And he says yeah you can kiss my Ass and Tracy's whole Face and it's like because Tracy knows he's gonna go With her he's like getting a slip A detention slip yeah he

SPEAKER_02:

wants to spend time with Her

SPEAKER_00:

yeah and it's like oh My god because she runs detention at this point Essentially it's so great When he says kiss my ass and they go to detention And she's like wow link you didn't Have to do that and he says it's like A cool scene down here and it's like Wait, actually, Link has been dying to get into detention. Dying to get into detention. Yeah. No, it's so cute. And he starts to try to date. He kind of does what Tracy did when she first rocked in. Like, he kind of is like, ooh, cool moves. And he tries to get into it. Yeah. And it becomes clear he don't quite got it just yet. Like, he doesn't have the rhythm. It's so cute. And the bell rings and he goes, oh, darn, just while I was getting the hang of it. And all the, like, people of color in detention are like, sure, sure, sure. But Seaweed is like, Penny's down there with Seaweed already. And Seaweed's like, y'all, the party doesn't have to stop. Like, my mom is having a party and we can all go everyone just come on with us and Penny says wow we're being invited places by colored people I know and Tracy goes so hip I know and it's like Link and Penny and Tracy are all going on a field trip to North Avenue and Link doesn't know them that well but I love that it's like they've all kind of been thrown together and he's like along for the journey it's really great that he's just like it's so good the song that they sing here is the best song in the movie it's not my favorite one but I do like it the seaweed kid astonishingly talented he's a star this

SPEAKER_02:

song

SPEAKER_00:

is

SPEAKER_02:

like his voice on this song and he's dancing the whole time oh my god it's so good I could say it ain't so but darling what's the use

SPEAKER_00:

oh my god I mean just the dancing the choreographed of everybody in detention all dancing together I really can't say enough about how talented this kid's voice is but they they do the whole bus ride down there they meet seaweed's little sister Lola and Nez who's just an incredible talent and they get off seaweed is like she's the future of the Courtney Collins show like she is so talented yeah and I mean she speaks for herself when she gets her little boogie in and when they get down to North Avenue to Queen Latifah's record store seaweed plants a kiss on his two fingers and then on to Penny and she just faints she faints right over it's so good and then there's even a scene where he's dancing because it's like the dance the run and tell that is like a little bit of a flirt to Amanda Bynes yeah like he is dancing and he's having fun but it is pointed at Amanda Bynes and she is digging it on the school bus she's like so into it that then when they get off the bus and he puts a little kiss to her lips she's like she just can't take it yeah it's pretty great and they go in and they meet Queen Latifah what song does she sing it's not oh my gosh this song is so no it's big blonde and beautiful oh yeah it's really great oh my gosh she's like fill up my plate cuz I'm a growing girl it's Nobody is doing it like her. Like, literally. Queen Latifah is an icon. And I'm reminded of how iconic she is. Every single scene in this movie. It's like. She's so iconic in Chicago, too. Like, I love her turn in Chicago. Like, she just. They just brought her out on the Grammys. And I was like, oh, we're having fun. Oh, we're having fun. And then Queen Latifah came out. And I was like, oh, my. Turn it off. Like, it's over. He introduces each of them to his mom. And his mom recognizes Tracy because she's getting so much attention on the show and he really takes a special extra moment to introduce Penny which is really sweet because up until now she really is kind of background character on this show but once Seaweed gets involved she's the main attraction honey and she says hello I'm very pleased and scared to be here and Queen Latifah says which I think is actually so important and I think we need to talk about it more and they should have like there's no room in this movie to expand on it but Queen Latifah says we have more to be afraid of walking through your neighborhood which is so true It just is so true. And they all start to dance and sing and she has her little solo. It's, it's really great. I

SPEAKER_02:

mean, her solo is

SPEAKER_00:

essentially like, come on in. Like, you know what I mean? It's like a, we're all having fun. There's lots of good food here. It's just like an exact opposite of how everybody in Tracy's life, like treats each other and behaves. Like Queen Latifah is a big woman. She's proud to be a big woman. She's making big food. You know what I mean? She's making food. She's feeding everybody. That's the opposite of how Edna acts. Like, like it's yeah she's celebrated and it's the first that we're seeing of of that of just like other people don't fuck with me but that doesn't mean I should be ashamed of me that means other people need to learn need to get on what I'm on while this is going on Brittany Snow has seen her boyfriend Link like dance off to go to North Avenue with them and she calls Edna on the phone pretending to be someone else and is like if you knew where your daughter was and then Edna shows up at the party too which is great because I feel like they just want at the party and she's like Tracy we gotta get out of here you wouldn't believe what I had to pay a cab like blah blah blah Quentin Latifah is like Edna wait before you go can we get offer you something to eat and I was like they show the spread and I'm like literally the whole point of this movie is that black people have better music and better food and like literally we're nothing without them like truly and then it's like again everyone's welcome and everyone's party and Edna sits right on down and has herself a grand old time it's really really sweet but it comes out through this party that that that Queen Latifah wanted to host this party because she's got bad news to deliver to the neighborhood their show on the Corny Collins show has been canceled they're not gonna do it anymore they're not gonna do it anymore they're just gonna stick with white kids and they don't get their segment anymore and it's really sad and even Edna is sad and they're like this is really wrong you know another thing they're sort of intercutting during this song is that while Amber tried to sabotage Tracy and Link in her own way Michelle Pfeiffer has to decided to get all hussied up and go down to the joke shop and try to like seduce Christopher Walken for what reason I have no idea like why is that going to get her daughter off there I think

SPEAKER_02:

just to like destroy their

SPEAKER_00:

morale to cause discord in their family yeah it's just like what so that's kind of happening and I wrote I do remember my least favorite part of this movie is like the seduction subplot and it doesn't work like spoiler alert we come out on the other side but I do just like hate to see it any dedicated screen time to it is too much for me But I like that Christopher Walken says, are you ready? He says, the way to a man's heart is through his funny bone. I think it just keeps getting better. Anyway, all the kids are so upset that their day is going to get canceled on the Corny Colin show. And Tracy's like... Tracy is very upset. This is bullshit. She was like, we need to march. Like, we don't need to dance. We need to march. And this is where Link starts to get real nervous. He's not having fun. Link's actually maybe not rocking with us quite as much as we thought. Yeah, and she goes, we're definitely going to go, right? And he goes, walk with me. And you're like, dude, it's so funny. And he's kind of like, I think this whole adventure maybe got a little too big for me. And she's devastated because she thinks, yeah, it's a bad choice of words, Link. He is worried that it's going to jeopardize his career. Obviously, we found out in the previous scene that Michelle Pfeiffer controls his contract and is hiring agents to come See him and he's like if we boycott The corny collins show obviously The agents aren't gonna get to see Me tracy is like but it's the right Thing to do and she's right i feel for Link i think has an understandable fear For his career but ultimately tracy is Right and yeah honestly ultimately link Sees that too and it's like is tracy Even in such a different position like Link has been doing this longer Sure maybe he feels like he has some Big shot but tracy is like the hottest Thing on the show right now and she's More she doesn't even hesitate you know it's so true but also it's like being the hottest thing on the show does not that not give you more power exactly to leverage exactly you know what I mean yeah yeah yeah that's a great I mean it depends on your how you look at it absolutely just to finish off that point that you said because I do think it's a really good one like does she not also have something to sacrifice or to like lose here and she definitely does but I do think like because she got her job and has been in conflict with the powers that be the whole time and link is obviously like a favorite of Michelle Pfeiffer's and of the studios they are in a bit of a different situation where she's like they already don't fuck with me and they can't do anything about it I have this power to like wage against it whereas Link is like honestly been been been like benefiting from his white privilege his whole career to such an extent that it's like that proximity to whiteness is what he has to give up and that's what he's hesitating to do and it is the right thing to do but they are in a different situation yeah totally and well said both the girls go home and Edna's like don't worry he's gonna realize his mistake you know and Tracy's sad she goes to bed Edna decides to put on something a little sexy I like that she says nothing like a spread to get you in the mood in the mood I love this scene too of her fully feeling herself yeah she's come home from a big day a big few days she had a great spread a big meal she made friends with Queen Latifah which was very cute she heard she's gonna go get her man yeah she's trying to get her man because i don't know if you knew this connor but um since this whole world began a woman found out if she shook it she could shake up a man yeah since this whole world began i thought you were gonna say um a man and woman like to shake it on a saturday night no christopher walken says this heart only beats for a size 60. She walks in on Wilbur. Yeah, she goes down to the joke shop. Not even in a compromising position. No, Michelle Pfeiffer's all over him. And she's like, oh my god, your wife. And he's just completely bewildered and confused. He's like, what's happening? Yeah, he has no idea what's going on. But he does have to go console Edna because Edna is rightfully confused and upset. And obviously, it's touched into some of her insecurities. And this is where we get the greatest love song of all time. Yeah, and I mean, first, we have Nikki Blonsky sitting on her dad's lap and she's sad he's comforting her you know he and her mom are fighting but um she's like i don't know i guess maybe i'm not the kind of girl that an interspersed through her sort of like complaining um he keeps going what are you talking what are you talking stop it it's so fucking cute like it's like the way he's supportive is like crazy it's crazy and it sort of like transitions into this song um about how much he loves Edna it is the you're timeless to me is maybe my favorite one from it's so it's so cute and he keeps it starts off so charming he keeps being like you're like old cheese and she's like oh and he's like you're like getting better with they yeah he's like you're like you're like a fatal disease and she's like no and he's like let the fever rage it's like yeah it's so it's it's it's incredible she's like I can't stop it your hairline's receding and he's like

SPEAKER_02:

sweaty it's on

SPEAKER_00:

yeah it's so the way they just chat over it while they sing to each other it's really maybe my favorite part of the movie their chemistry's incredible and he gets her he wins her over so fast by basically being like what are you talking about like oh my god what's the line he says it's so sweet where he's like some people are afraid of time passing but it's my favorite thing because it just means another day with you I mean it's all it's all about like they're wrong they've got it wrong like to be with your loved one longer makes it sweeter yeah exactly he says the best line after they after Edna's sort of singing back to him and they're back together he sings this line to her where he goes

SPEAKER_02:

you fat and old but baby boring

SPEAKER_00:

you ain't I love so much I wrote down the same one but baby boring you ain't you ain't I was like put those in the marriage vows fucking yeah I know seriously no one's doing it like these two fuckers like actually true love is real and Edna and Wilbur taught me that and then she kind of like sits down on the they're gonna sit down and have a little romantic moment and Christopher Walken does a little boogie to get over her to her because he's so like just excited to make out and have a little moment he's revved up it is they both just do so well I mean Christopher Walken

SPEAKER_02:

singing

SPEAKER_00:

they're dancing they do a little salsa moment like it can't be overstated that John Travolta was perfect for this like and Christopher Walken really surprised me too with his how willing he was to really commit to the dance moves it's they sell it 110% it's romance I think I would have loved a little kiss I know why they don't obviously but I would have loved a kiss between them it's like I think in this movie you've already got him in drag like you're already pushing up against all these other stereotypes I remember what it was like in 2007 yeah but this is two men that were like in their 50s and 60s I'm not surprised that they didn't have but they could have put it in there there's no real reason they did they could have they could have and I think now we live in a time where people expect you to like kind of meet the moment but I get why they were like oh we're not gonna ask Christopher Walken at 60 to kiss a man it was 2007 see I

SPEAKER_02:

resent that I think Christopher Walken would be happy to kiss a man

SPEAKER_00:

and actually I've

SPEAKER_02:

seen him kiss a man on severance several times I don't like I'm don't put that on Christopher

SPEAKER_00:

don't put that on my man

SPEAKER_02:

I think

SPEAKER_00:

they I think it was weak they didn't give let him have a little smooch John Travolta would have smooched I think so too and I noticed it it doesn't take anything away from the movie but I noticed it because their chemistry was so good that I thought let him have it let us have it let him have it uh um so then in this next we get the like this is their like selma scene yeah and it's a little serious i think for the movie they needed to give queen latifah her like powerhouse moment and i think it is a serious thing you know what i mean they they decide they're gonna march tracy gets up early and leaves sneaks out of the house edna comes in to tell her that her parents have made up which is cute and she's already gone she's gonna go you know protest with them and queen latifah warns her you're gonna pay a hefty price and she's like there's nowhere i'd rather be it's very sweet yeah but queen latifah it's this big solo uh what's the song um it's basically like i know i know where i've been is the like oh yeah and it's basically like things have to get better like it's basically like all we can do is like look to the future because things like have to get yeah so when they meet the police line edna tries to come and get her but tracy's like no you're with us mom and she starts to walk with them too they meet the police line and it's just silly tracy like taps on A cop on the back with her like sign Which like this pissed me off it pissed me Off because I do think we just live in a Different time now where it's like There'd be no world like you we know as a Society that cops are literally looking to Fuck with you like cops are the only White girl in this huge crowd of Yeah and you're gonna be the one that is The aggressor like yeah and it's not Aggressive like honestly one of the jokes Of the movie right is that they keep Like overselling how aggressive Tracy Was in the news they keep saying you Know what I mean people are like I Didn't know she killed an eagle scout yeah and she like bludgeoned him with a crowbar like it's it's like keeps getting bigger when really she tapped him but she did like bonk him with her sign it's petty it's childish and it's annoying because it's so clearly endangering everyone else much and it's they're obviously gonna spin it it's like i don't like that it's like dude you act like we don't know about cops you act like we don't know how cops are you act like we they all they're looking for is an excuse to like literally brutalize people a hundred percent and so it's like to have her sort of like act like oh she did that and then she's the victim because they're blowing it out of proportion is frustrating to me because it's like well a lot of the people in this scene and in this shot have to live in a world where they can't just flippantly say that was rude it's like bitch come on and also it's like and let's be honest they're gonna pay the price for you being like I'm just gonna bonk them on the head yeah I know and not only that it really pisses me off that she then kind of runs away and lets them in she's like oops she slips out of the crowd and I'm like okay so I guess they'll all get arrested everybody links arms as she runs in the other direction exactly she's like oh no I'm so scared of what I've done and I'm like and the violence that is like gonna be perpetrated is gonna be 10 times against the people that you left behind and it already was it already was exactly they are the people that needed protection and instead you've like put them in danger and yeah this movie just wasn't doing that I hated watching her run away while they all get arrested yeah it honestly it pissed me off too It was pre-BLM, but honestly, it wasn't pre-police cruelty. It wasn't pre-brutality. Yeah, it wasn't pre the actual marching that resulted in crazy police brutality. It didn't age well. It's the one thing in this movie, it really didn't age well. It's a bad look, and it doesn't even address it, that she abandoned them. It's like, well, she's on the lam. And if anything, it is a credit to the BLM movement that it's like, I wasn't thinking about that at all. when I first watched it in 2007 and now it stuck out to us both so strongly yeah absolutely she goes to Penny's house to get away and we have Alice and Janie like doing her like Hail Marys and knitting and stuff and she's like trust you gotta pray to the Lord and Penny sees Tracy in the window and she goes okay mother excuse me and like gets up and leaves and it's you know Penny's such a good friend she agrees to hide her in their bomb shelter in the basement which is so funny there's bunk beds and stuff she goes I don't really know why we have this room down here but there's plenty Have canned food and bed and it's Really Russian literature yeah yeah like The Cold War it's she says Tracy she Says Penny you could get in a lot of Trouble for this you could go to Jail and she goes Tracy I'm Already in jail yeah I know it's so Great it's so great um and then when We go back to the Turnblad house Obviously Edna is very afraid for Her daughter they don't know where He is but you learn that Christopher Walken he bailed everyone Out of jail and he was like he says We're gonna have to eat rice and Beans for a couple years Because he spent all their money bailing Everyone out of jail man a man It felt like the right thing to do A man truly She goes knights In armor don't come shinier than You Wilbur and I Have to agree it's really Sweet When they're In the bunker also after Penny says her little line you liked about I'm already in jail she's like your hair Fell flat and Tracy says It's fine it was just a symbol of my conformity to the man

SPEAKER_02:

it's so good

SPEAKER_00:

yeah and she spends the rest of the scene with like one half of her head like completely deflated yeah it's really great while they're looking for her they don't know where she is she's hiding out at Penny's Link shows up at the Turnblad looking for her and he says Mrs. Turnblad I can't believe Tracy savagely bludgeoned an Eagle Scout that just doesn't seem like her the writing the dialogue is really I mean I didn't see the original musical in Maybe a lot of it is borrowed from that. But so many of the lines in between these absolutely stellar musical numbers are so, so funny. They're so funny. It really is funny. And everybody's killing it. It's so good to see Link again. He says, I can't sleep. I can't eat. And Edna goes, you can't eat? You can't eat. Come on in. And he starts his little solo. Oh, my gosh. Life is like a fun. You can't buy it without love. And he, I mean, like he's singing at her portrait and just seducing the entire theater yeah and um interspersed is seaweed comes to break amanda binds out where she's been well because janice alice and jannie catches them like having tracy in the basement she calls the police and she locks tracy down there and then she ties penny up upstairs she throws holy water on her and she goes devil child devil child and i will say i remember doing that all the time as a like after this movie came out i remember all the time we would like turn to each other and be like devil child devil child not you and me me and like oh my friends you and devil children not you and me me and the devil children you know yeah but seaweed's just coming to pick her up there's all this mayhem and everything going on and the march got dispersed and he just goes to get his girl and when he gets there she's tied up and he lays her down on that bed and lands one on her she's like oh seaweed you do care i thought the color of our skin would keep us apart it's so great and they get their moment that won't but these knots might was your mom in the navy is your mom in the fucking navy it's so good and they're making it out and this is where we hear for the first time Amanda Bynes scene and honey she is not playing I said why is Amanda Bynes an inimitable talent like she breaks out like the songbird she's doing harmonies she's got that falsetto on it's amazing she is carrying this song she is true and they highlight her for sure she definitely gets like a leading you know harmony in the rest of the song

SPEAKER_02:

life is It's just a hostess snack But now I've tasted chocolate And I'm never going back But she's

SPEAKER_00:

climbing down the drainpipe and they almost forget Tracy in the basement. She drops the key in through the window. So Tracy, and they put her in the trunk. Let me out at the next toll. It's so good. Oh my gosh, it's so good. And it's just, one, it's a link solo, so it's absolutely incredible. Yeah, but two, it's just so fun to see everybody coming together. What I will say is a bit of a plot hole for me is at this point, Tracy is singing like, Link, when I get my hands on you, I'm never letting go. And I was like, at this point, Link is still mad. Or Tracy is still mad at Link. She doesn't know yet that Link has had a change of heart. They're doing that magical thing where it's like we, the audience, know something and they're just letting it. Or she's got an inclination that she can change him or something. I think really it's that she's so afraid she's going to go to prison that he's on her mind and she's like, I gotta see Link again. She's like, I miss my man. Yeah, I gotta see my man. You guys, I'm sorry to do it, but I've just got to mention he lays down on the bed and is singing to her portrait and he is writhing around on that bed he's horny he's horny for Tracy he's horny for Tracy and now we get why Nikki Blonsky was so nuts in all those interviews was so fucking confused she was confused girl she was mad confused she's so confused she said I'm getting mad mixed messages yeah so it kind of like moves into this plan they come up with they're like they're smuggling her she's in the trunk they're hiding Penny they're all singing to each other they're headed to Miss Maybach 4th Avenue yeah and they just it just erupts and this culminates in this massive massive song and Miss Maybel's like oh my god we're hiding the you know the refugees that are Penny and Tracy and she's like what and you have them earlier everything she's done for us we should have gone and like hidden her sooner or whatever and I'm like well remember when she ran away from you guys and let you get assaulted by the cops yeah low key low key low key low key seaweed

SPEAKER_02:

makes it known to Miss Maybel that he and

SPEAKER_00:

Penny are Penny are going to be

SPEAKER_02:

a

SPEAKER_00:

thing. And Miss Mabel says, you know, love

SPEAKER_02:

is

SPEAKER_00:

a beautiful thing. But she also says a whole lot of ugly is coming at you from a never ending parade of stupid. And Amanda Bynes looks dead at her and goes, so you met my mom. Yeah, it's cute. But it's like I almost wish they didn't have that because I wish there was a beat for like them being like, and we're ready to like we're going to face it together. You know what I mean? They hatch a plan to basically break into the Miss Hairspray pageant and try and integrate it like from within like Tracy is going to make a moment have a like political stand on TV if she can yeah she's gonna stage a protest but the issue is they've got the place surrounded by cops of course Amanda Bynes shows up in the most fucking smashing blue dress you've ever seen it's got like a little detached hem that's like attached

SPEAKER_02:

with little gold like or little silver rings yeah she looks great

SPEAKER_00:

she looks so good I will say they give her some dance moves she can't do Dancer, I know. I

SPEAKER_02:

wrote that

SPEAKER_00:

down too and I was like, you know what? Because she has such an all-around worldwide talent, I don't even think these dance moves are beyond her. I think they sabotaged her in that tight dress. I think if let free, she could have done it. They did, but I think they might have used different edits or not had her in the front or something. It's very noticeable that she's not as good. And if they could have just made it a part of it, but she's such a good singer that it's kind of frustrating that you're listening to her sing so well and really carry the song and then her dance moves are so kind of wonky that I'm like, maybe it was an editing thing. It's just unfortunate because it's like you can tell that she like some of it is like step related, like she can't move her feet as wide as Smithy. And I'm like, you could have just given her different choreography. so they do the dance competition it's starting off kind of lame you see that michelle pfeiffer is cheating she's adding more votes for her daughter and not only do we see it mrs edna turnblatt sees it and she says absolutely not i won't stand for this okay yeah there's like a whole rigmarole about the police going outside to try to stop tracy from coming in and then they carry her in in a empty hairspray can because there's christopher walken dresses up to be like a decoy and then they use the empty hairspray can as the battering ram and then she was actually inside the battering ram so they carried her in which is like so silly that they would have to guess they would do that Michelle Pfeiffer realizes because they say sorry that battering ram was so heavy it was what we got and she was like heavy they should be light they're hollow and they realize of course that's how she got in Tracy and then they somehow get locked out yeah it's like a whole thing and it apparently was all going totally according to plan but she shows up on the dance floor and does her number what song are they singing here at the end it's the big ending number it that

SPEAKER_02:

you can't stop the motion of the ocean or the sun in the sky you can try to something something but I never ask why and if

SPEAKER_00:

you not my favorite one but it is effective as the last one this is see I think it's great and I think it has like literally 10 versions that they just keep bringing new people in to be like and I also think you can't stop the beat yeah the best part of it is truly what like my favorite line is the like

SPEAKER_02:

ever since this whole world began a woman found out if she shook it she could chick up a man so I'm gonna shake and shimmy just the best that I can today

SPEAKER_00:

because you can't stop it's so good and then there's I mean like the best one it's like she starts dancing and then link starts dancing and it's like links with us link staging the protest he comes and gets her and he's like Tracy I love you and she's like I love you too and they're together it's really really cute there's a moment I also want to throw to where like Amber's doing her tryout and her fucking dance moves are so lame and weak that the camera cuts to Corny Collins and he just rolls his eyes and I'm like I love that Corny hates Amber and it's like me too but Link and Tracy are dancing and it's a big finale and here's what I want to say this is the second time that I think we don't we need to give Link some credit here because the way it teared me up they could have taken this moment to be like Link chooses Tracy and this is a Tracy and Link moment but she's like they're about to read the winner of the competition which they've obviously fixed for it to be Amber when Tracy shows up and so it's like oh my God there's an influx of new calls and stuff and you're thinking like oh my God maybe Tracy's gonna win yeah so so they're dancing and she's there on the floor and she goes oh my God thank you link like referring to the agents who are in the crowd that Michelle Pfeiffer called for him which is why he initially didn't want to be involved in the March and she's like they love you and he goes yeah not for long and then he says what Connor oh yeah that's it's so good yeah he's like I actually don't care about my career so much as I care about this and he's like I get to choose my partner and I choose little Lil Inez and it's Seaweed's little sister that he calls up and it's like he could have literally won Tracy's heart to be like you're my dance partner and that's who I pick but instead he uses his platform to throw shine on Lil Inez and effectively me and it effectively put makes her candidate for Miss Hairspray she gets a huge influx of calls this is the longer thing this is the longer bigger thing I think we need to give him credit yeah totally he was throwing shine for Lil Inez sure that just keeps it with her that's just a little favor he does for her because that's nice but because she's seen so many people call in and say that's who i want for miss hairspray that the the inherent prize of miss hairspray is that you get to be a regular on the corny collins show so because they have no control over it that's the thing it's like they could have just been like out of the kindness of our hearts we decided little i know she got to be on but because his dancing with her means she got so many votes for miss hairspray and she wins and they have no choice I mean of course they have a choice but like it's it's the inherent prize that now she's going to be a regular and that's how he then integrates against everyone's will the corny Colin show that corny comes out and he announces little Inez has won she got a huge influx of votes Michelle Pfeiffer's freaking out she's like you can't let this happen and of course they catch her on TV you know like you said the camera pants her and it's like I fixed to the votes this can't be happening but corny Collins is like like no she got a major influx of votes and she's the winner and as such the Corny Collins show is now officially integrated and everyone freaks out and it's like this is because of Link it is like Link is the reason Tracy got on and there was an inclusion of different shape people on the show Link is the reason that Lil Inez gets on I just think oh Link the man that you are the man that you are truly and it's like that's what makes that's what makes Tracy so happy too it's like yeah she could have made the moment about her but he makes it about like character and doing the right thing and that's like the cause and and it and it shows like a complete reversal of the initial thing that made her not like him so you know the initial fight that they had he comes out completely and does the right thing it's so well done and then everyone gets their little solo and they dance and Edna does a dance and you know Michelle Pfeiffer and Amber gets stuck it too Edna's little dance moved me so much basically after she catches Michelle Pfeiffer's little meltdown Wilbur is like she's like oh Wilbur like I couldn't and he's like honey nobody's a better dancer than you and then he's like do it now or forever wish you did and she throws off her coat and she's wearing just the flashiest little dance number and she goes out and just I mean tears it up and I loved this little like idea that that Edna tears it the fuck up that that's where Tracy got it from that Edna's like an absolute demon on the dance floor and she gets to like display that and be proud of herself for that moment and Wilbur is like so And then Miss Mabel gets her moment. Everyone gets a little solo. Oh, yeah, she sings her verse. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Seaweed and Penny kiss on TV. I mean, Penny, yeah, he gets Penny and he drags her out there and she is singing and she kisses him on TV. And, I mean, Amanda Bynes is amazing. Amanda Bynes is an amazing singer in this scene, too. But, yeah, 100%. It's so victorious. It's so uplifting. It's so victorious, yeah. And it ends. I mean, the movie just is like we did it. Like, we integrated the show and everyone loves Tracy. We got what we wanted. Yeah. It ends on a kiss between between Link and Tracy. Yeah. They get one. They end up together. But it's like, can you make your message? Can you get out there fast enough and loud enough before it's stifled out by the people that don't want it heard that you then are safe? Like you are protected by the fact that people are on your side and it's really hard to do it. And I love that that's how they do it. The audience loves it. The sponsors and the manager of the Station just have to get over it because this is where we're going people are so thrilled about Lil Inez's win and about Tracy being back and the integration that it's like they have no choice but to get on board but it's like in order to do that you have to you have to amplify that message fast enough and loud enough that you are protected you know what I mean that people would not let you then take the fall for that kind of stance or that kind of movement and it's really well done and I loved it so much I wish there was more Amanda Bynes in it I wish there was more I do because she's so excellent in her tiny moments but I also I can't believe we never see her sing again or anything like that she really did a good job that's what I was going to say I also think like you get her in EZA which is she's amazing in EZA and you get more of her and but but seeing this movie made me really wish there was even more in the canon to see I would just absolutely feast on Amanda Bynes content if there was more of it I totally agree I wish she was in it more But she's great in it Do we want to You throw me your watchability I'm going to put a watchability of fucking 10 I know that's crazy I don't know if I've ever done a 10 It's excellent It's just pure entertainment Like in it's purest form It's not even like it's like My favorite movie we've watched on that But for watchability this is entertainment In it's purest form there's not a single moment that doesn't Make you happy there's not a single moment You aren't glad you're watching it that isn't sweet Funny I mean it tickles every single this is like this is a movie you know that um harry styles clip about uh yeah where he's like this is a movie like that's this is a movie and i'm gonna give a comedian mary kate probably only like a six i don't think they let her do very much comedy i don't think she's as funny as she can be but she's sweet in it um and so she's gonna be in the top half always i think but i just don't think it's her best demonstration of comedic chops but um it's wonderful she's She isn't the reason to watch it. It's not an Abandoned Binds movie, but she's great in it. She is great in it. And I think it only just makes me sadder to think of how many of things like this that she could have cameoed in. We were robbed. Absolutely. We really were robbed. I'm going to give it a Watchability 8. I'm just keeping in mind like the other movies that we've watched. I think it's big fun. I think it's big fun. I do think kind of the knowing more about some of the people in it did make me... less excited to pay to watch it but it is big fun all the songs are good all the songs are good all the performances are good it's such a bop yeah it's such a bop I'm gonna say I think obviously she's I thought she was hilarious every single time she opened her mouth I'm gonna give her a comedian Mary Kate of yeah like a six I'm actually gonna go a little bit rogue here and I'm gonna give her an underrated Ashley performance because I never expected her to sing yeah and she blew me away I'm giving her a fucking not nine underrated yeah that's so true that's so true that's a good idea yeah I think she does deserve a nine no one knew you know why didn't we get more like I know I know that was so much fun I hope next week is as fun we're watching saved it's a Mandy Moore week I think I'm gonna love that movie I remember loving it yeah the girls who didn't like the walk the walk to remember episode may want to tune out of the next episode as well oh because there's gonna be a lot of religious hate yeah we should we should say yeah like that whole movie is like about christians and not in a good way we're gonna come guns blazing yeah yeah so um we'll see you guys there bye was directed by Adam Shankman, story by Thomas Meehan and Mark O'Donnell, and music composed by Mark Scheinman and Scott Whitman.
