In one of the more stressful episodes to date, Liz and Greg try to choose between nostalgic favorites, upbeat melodies and beach-themed music videos to determine which one is the ultimate 80s summer banger! They also discuss what makes a summer banger, their favorites memories of an 80s summer and Liz tells Greg about why a Train song reminds her of the time she yelled at him in high school.

SPEAKER_00

It's from coast to coast. The countdown continues on our way to number one.

SPEAKER_03

Hello, hello, and welcome to another episode of a really good podcast with Greg and Liz. And today's episode we are discussing 80s summer bangers.

SPEAKER_02

From when we were babies.

SPEAKER_03

I know. It's funny. I mean, we know obviously all of these songs.

SPEAKER_02

I know. And you know, 80s summer. I mean, was there anything I ever I remember going to my Kathy's pool and she would make macaroni and cheese and call us out. And it's like going to the beach with like little to no supervision. Yeah. Tasting hermit crabs. Just like it's like the summer in the 80s. Just this combination of unchecked parenting and the world was a different place. Safe.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, even like from 80s to 90s, because I have pictures in the 80s of me as like a baby with my aunt just a cigarette right in my face.

SPEAKER_02

You know, cigarettes everywhere. I love that like meme of like Mel Gibson smoking a cigarette, and it's like your mom watching you open your Christmas presents. Like so great. You know what's funny? I heard this quote once that it was you should be preparing your kids for the road, not the road for your kids. And boy, if the 80s were like if you go to a playground in the 80s and it was a summer day, you're gonna burn your ass.

SPEAKER_03

You're gonna burn your ass. It might be wooden, so you probably get some splinters.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, a lot of metal. There's not that bouncy stuff to land on.

SPEAKER_03

No, no, nobody's having like a foam floor in the hair.

SPEAKER_02

Remember that thing you run around and spin and like you just push and people jump on and jump out.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, they actually a playground that is near my old house had one of those, and there were quite a few injuries just from I would imagine. Yeah, yeah. We had one of those domes at our school, you know, those huge, it was huge, and some girl like fell off it and broke her arm. And it's like, yeah, duck.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. It should take some courage to get to the top of the dome. Yeah, right. I mean, we had that too. We called it a beehive.

SPEAKER_03

I know. So when it comes to the songs of the 80s, though, I was thinking about this, and obviously I can recognize a summer banger, but then sometimes I'm like, is this a summer banger or is this just a banger? And then I'm like, is this just something I remember listening to in the summer?

SPEAKER_02

I think one piece that you have to pay attention to is in is the video take place at a beach or does it appear warm? You know, I I think then you're in the right direction.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I mean, or just very confusing. I obviously we have a ton of songs, so we are gonna bracket today and we're gonna try to pick the ultimate 80s summer banger. So there's a lot of songs, so we're gonna go through them kind of quickly, but I wasn't able to watch all of the music videos, but I watched enough videos to say they were out of their minds.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. I mean, the the music video has lost all its I don't even see music videos anymore.

SPEAKER_03

Now, peak music video time is the late 80s to early to mid 90s easily I would say early to Backstreet Boys in sync. TRL really made the music video important. I personally love a music video with a storyline. Runaway train, runaway train, November rain.

SPEAKER_02

November rain. What's the the meatloaf, every meatloaf one?

SPEAKER_03

Every everything I would do anything for love, but I won't do that. Where he had a fake woman come in and sing the part.

SPEAKER_02

You know what was a cool video? Remember Freak on a leash and you would follow the bullet all over the place?

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Where's this thing going? You know, I know. I love a music video. We gotta do like top five music videos, our own personal top five. The problem is a lot of the ones that I love are a little problematic. Like R. Kelly, down low was one of my favorites. Justin Timberlake, Crimea River, another one of my favorites.

SPEAKER_02

He's problematic. Timberlake's problematic.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, I just hate him.

SPEAKER_02

I'd like him. I think he's a he's such a tool. Yeah, he is a tool, but there was a period where he was like sex simple.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah. You know, I mean the Crimea River music video changed my life. Which one? Crimea River, the one where he had the girl dressed up as Britney. Oh yeah. And depicted her cheating on him after he broke up with Britney. So basically it was him saying it was just one more way he used Britney Spears to claw to the top. Well, one more thing I actually wanted to talk about. Where do 80s summer bangers and yacht rock intersect?

SPEAKER_02

Because almost suggests summer, doesn't it?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, they all feel like summer to me. A lot of them are 70s, though. I will say that. I was thinking it's like that thing where it's like every square is a quadrangle, but not every quadrangle is a square. Every yacht rock song is an 80 summer banger, but not every 80 summer banger is a yacht rock song.

SPEAKER_02

That's absolutely right. And it's also like, how do you know it's a summer song? It's like that when that judge made the um how do you know what porn is? He said, You know it when you see it.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It's kind of the same thing, right? So you feel yeah. Well, does it make me feel like summer? Summer banger. That's it. And make does it have to have come out in the summertime?

SPEAKER_03

I think I don't think so.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, okay. So we can get it.

SPEAKER_03

I don't think it has to come out in the summer because I think sometimes, you know, banger is a banger. Sometimes also you gotta have it come out and let it build.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I think Home Alone came out in June, didn't it? It came out. So it's like it doesn't really have to.

SPEAKER_03

I think we've seen that with a lot of these. All right, so let's start the songs. What I'm gonna do is I'm gonna do the two songs that were are going up against each other, and then we'll discuss discuss each song. Okay. So first up, we're gonna start out with a this is a big one.

SPEAKER_02

And it's an easy one for me. So go ahead.

SPEAKER_03

We have Kokomo by the Beach Boys, Aruba, Jamaica, versus Vacation by the Go Go's. Did you watch the Kokomo music video?

SPEAKER_02

Yes, of course I did.

SPEAKER_03

It is it is I know what you're gonna say. What we gotta get to the bottom of John Stamos and the Beach Boys.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, Beach Boy. I I mean, like, what is the deal? Did they owe him a favor?

SPEAKER_03

I something so I looked it up actually because I was like, Bridge and I talked about this. No, I listened to the case. When she came, yeah, when she came and did the what was it, the fake bands. We talked about this and we didn't really know much. Apparently, they just became really good friends, and he was like, Come on full house, and they were like, Okay, and then they were like, come play with us, and he was like, Okay, and they just put him in the Kokomo video, and then I think it petered out a little bit, but he was never officially part of the Beach Boys, but I do believe he toured with them.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, like the thing was like when I saw that video, and obviously this was like peak full house fame, it's like there's no explanation why Uncle Jesse is playing the Bongos right now.

SPEAKER_03

Or why Mike, what's his name? Mike Mike Love? No, yeah, Mike, good job. Yeah, it is Mike. Is that it? I know why he's in your living room. There's a lot of people.

SPEAKER_02

Did I miss the mark for Full House? Because it was like these these guys are like really old. Yeah, and a lot you know, you know, a lot of people aren't.

SPEAKER_03

Well, that's the other thing. Like the the age doesn't line up, you know.

SPEAKER_02

That's a weird thing.

SPEAKER_03

It is weird, and then vacation by the go goes, not a not a summer song, not a summer banger. I don't think you want to call it a summer banger because they're like water skiing in the music video, yeah. Yeah, yeah, but it's about wanting to go on vacation.

SPEAKER_02

So that's more like I'm in the office, kind of thinking about vacation, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Not quite there, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

It's not very upbeat. I feel like summer you want it to feel like you are going on vacation.

SPEAKER_02

So we're coming out strong with this because Kokomo is up there.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, Kokomo could be the winner, but I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

We have a you know, it's a made-up place too.

SPEAKER_03

Should we just call it right now and be done with the case? No, because I have one in my mind that I'm like I have a couple that are in my mind, but I don't know if it's just because we used to listen to it on the way to the beach. So we're we're gonna keep going. Okay. Boys of summer versus summer of 69.

SPEAKER_00

I got the first one of 60. Was a summer of 69.

SPEAKER_02

Now, see, this was a really hard one.

SPEAKER_03

I actually considered not putting them next to each other because I knew they would both go far, but then I said one way or the other, they're gonna end up going head to head.

SPEAKER_02

It's funny because like so we got Don Henley and we've got Brian Adams, right? Did you watch the Boys of Summer music video? I did. Henry is now obsessed with the song. We have to hear it every time we get in the car.

SPEAKER_03

That's like Crosby and Crosby and Careless Whisper. Crosby is actually going to do saxophone next year in middle school because of Careless Whisper.

SPEAKER_02

So you should let him watch the beginning of Lost Boys. Very good saxophone scene there.

SPEAKER_03

Oh yeah. I know. I told him he needed to learn what's that one by uh Baker Street? Like you gotta learn Baker Street solo if you're gonna.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, we'll be able to get any girl if he can pull that off.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know, is the saxophone like the sexiest instrument?

SPEAKER_02

Right. Well, he's 11, so Clinton was a big saxophone guy.

SPEAKER_03

You know how he's I found him very attractive when I was in fifth grade. So Boys of Summer, like they are frolicking on the beach in the music video. What is going on in this music video, by the way?

SPEAKER_02

So I don't know. There was a like I I feel like that was it's just very 80s to me. And Summer of 69. So this one was really hard for me because I want to say something. It's almost like Brian Adams is the Don Henley of Canada almost.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It seems like they're very similar, or or like Richard Marks or something. It's in that same category.

SPEAKER_03

Summer of 69 doesn't lose points though for invoking another era.

SPEAKER_02

Or isn't there something that like inherently nostalgic about Summer?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I don't know. I'm inclined to go Summer of 69 only because I feel like it sounds more like a summer banger, even though I do associate Boys of Summer with the 80s more.

SPEAKER_02

God, dude, we're torn on this one. So because I'm I'm with Don Henley on this one.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, you're going Don High? You know what? You well, I'll go Don Henley.

SPEAKER_02

This is a collaboration, so yeah, like the the it's just a better song, I think. I'm surprised to hear myself say that because I Summer in the 69 is a probably more well-known song, but yeah, it yeah, it kind of crescendos, you know.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah. I mean, it just it feels like summer to me, but I don't know if it's a banger.

SPEAKER_02

In the convertible, but I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

You know what? Who cares? This is hey, guess what? This is our this is our bracket. We can do whatever we want. It's our opinion. All right, we have your love is on a vacation for Ruin versus Take Me Home Tonight. This is another tough one.

SPEAKER_02

This is incredibly hard. I know. And then Outfield, right?

SPEAKER_03

The Outfield, your love. When you hear that Josie's on a vacant, yeah, that like you could like plow through a wall, you know.

SPEAKER_02

I think that says it all almost.

SPEAKER_03

But then take Take Me Home Tonight is like Take Me Home Tonight is really good. Here's where I want to give a little credit to your love. Is this the first song up until that point, and maybe for years on out after to mention liking older women? I mean, when do you ever hear that? I might have started the whole genre like because like every other song is like girls, she was only 17, you know, and he's like, Well, thank you. Give me a nice 30-something.

SPEAKER_02

This is very progressive. I like this. So, yeah, all right. Well, and and also, like, I don't like the be my little baby line.

SPEAKER_03

So, how about a little fun fact about this? So he says, just like Ronnie sang, and he's talking about Ronnie Specter of the Ronettes, who sings the song Be My Baby. Oh, and she is the one he hired her to come and sing that part.

SPEAKER_02

Now it's cooler, right? Now it's cooler.

SPEAKER_03

Fun?

SPEAKER_02

But I still don't like it. No, I'm not ongoing your own.

SPEAKER_03

Also, just a little note the keyboardist of the outfield is blind. He had something when he was younger, and he actually had surgery to remove his eyes. So blind musicians. Not not something you see every day.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I mean, we got Stevie Wonder, we got Ray Charles.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know. His song Angel Eyes, it's like you probably were working at Eddy's and heard that song because I was using it to try to get someone to slow down.

SPEAKER_03

At Eddie's at Eddy's, yeah.

unknown

It's a memory.

SPEAKER_03

All right. Next up, we're gonna go Queen of Pop, Whitney Houston, back. We're doing it. We're doing a Houston off. How will I know?

unknown

How will I know? How will I know?

SPEAKER_03

Versus I Wanna Dance. It's kind of the same song.

SPEAKER_02

I know. And what's funny, they can like just roll right into each other. So they're not gonna go, they're not gonna be in the running for the top, even though Whitney Houston is incredible. I think I want to dance with somebody. I want to dance.

SPEAKER_03

Let's do it. Let's put it on there.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Can I say one thing about Whitney before we move on?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

This here's a song that I remember being uh in this summer that was like wildly well, just like super calm song, uh cover. It was Whitney Houston. Higher love? No, I will always love you. Oh, yes.

SPEAKER_03

That's like a summer banger. I don't know. It kind of seems like just like remember when Lauren Hill.

SPEAKER_02

I know, but I can just picture like crying on the way to the beach.

SPEAKER_03

Or what about that's what you want to invoke.

SPEAKER_02

And the other one.

SPEAKER_03

Were you crying on the way to the beach? Is that a real thing?

SPEAKER_02

Remember when Lauren Hill came out? That that like oh X Factor? No, the one that was like another one that was kind of like uh Oh, you're just too good to be true. No, killing me softly.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah. Well, that was the Fujies.

SPEAKER_02

Huge. Yeah, that was Fuji. Yeah, right.

SPEAKER_03

All right. No, I totally hear you, but yeah, no, I I'll go. I want to dance. All right, next up, next up we have a Billy Ocean off. A Billy Off, yeah. Carabine Queen. Versus get out of my dreams, get into my car. Beep beep, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Um You know what I'm gonna pick? So his name's Ocean. Yeah, Billy Ocean. Does he do anything but summer hits?

SPEAKER_03

I know. You know what I mean? I actually was thinking we should crown the king or queen of 80 summer bangers, and I was thinking I was putting Billy Ocean on the list, even though he really only has like two songs that we know of. Kenny Loggins would be in that comic. Kenny Loggins would be there. We'll we'll get there though. You don't think it's Caribbean? I mean, I just love Get Out of My Dreams, Get Into My Car. It is a great song.

SPEAKER_02

You know what? Let's go with that. It is a great song. Both are good.

SPEAKER_03

My brother was in one of those auctions, you know, they do the like date auction when he was like in his early early 20s. Yeah, it was like at Rhodes on the Patuxet. It wasn't like a yeah, super intense thing, and they had to do like a walkout song, and that was his walkout song, Get Out of My Dreams, Get Into My Car.

SPEAKER_02

That is actually not bad. What do you go for?

SPEAKER_03

I don't know. I actually don't know. All right, next up, this one's a piece of cake for me. Everybody wants to rule the world.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, this is so I as much as I'm a Duran Duran guy. Yeah, um Everybody Wants to Rule of the World is one of the greatest songs of all time. Welcome to your life. Like the big the first line is like I know it's it's honestly Tears for Fear is super underrated.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and you know what I like? I always thought that really ugly guy was the lead singer, but it's not the guy who does the shout, shout.

SPEAKER_02

I think they're both pretty ugly.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, the other one I felt like if he didn't have that weird creepy long ponytail, like there was some potential there, but it's got a great bridge, it's just a great, great song.

SPEAKER_02

It really is. We're doing a Christopher cross off.

SPEAKER_03

We're doing a Christopher cross off sailing sailing takes me away.

SPEAKER_01

Like the whee, like the whee.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, sailing, it's called sailing, first of all. So but I sailing is have you ever seen that episode of Seinfeld where Elaine dates that guy and every time he hears Witchy Woman? Desperado be like desperato, no, desperado, he goes into a trance. Like that's sailing for me. I can't tell you how many times I've been in the car and it's come on, and it just soothes my soul.

SPEAKER_02

The guy's voice is incredible, and then when you see what he looks like, I know you're like making a lot of like looks judgment, and I'm not, I shouldn't be because I'm no spring chicken, you know what I'm saying?

SPEAKER_03

So let's say I would say for this one, but ride like the wind is a a more upbeat song, and summer night, too.

SPEAKER_02

It gives me like summer night, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Let's do that one just because I love sailing and I would do it in a bracket for my one of my favorite songs of all time, but I think for these purposes, ride like the wind. All right, walking on sunshine versus versus you make my dreams come true.

SPEAKER_02

So this is easy for me. Okay, because I'm I'm a sucker for Hollow Notes.

SPEAKER_03

You're an Odie? I don't know what they're called. I was thinking we should do an episode on them. Should we do that next?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I would love that. They are great. Yes.

SPEAKER_03

Let's do it next because they have a tumultuous relationship. I don't think they're friends anymore. I think they had a falling out. You make my dreams come true. The thing about that, I don't know. I feel like I've gotten desensitized to it because it's so overused in the media, you know. When I watched this video, I was like, okay, I need to like go back to like first hearing this song.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so I well, the fact that it's used so much says something about it. Yeah. For one thing. Just like when I hear what's that journey song that was used at Seprano's finale, Don't Stop Believe. Yeah. That's that's such a great song, but like when I hear it, I change it because I'm like, ugh, too much. Yeah, you know, but you gotta give credit where credit's due. So I don't I don't know. What do you what do you think on this?

SPEAKER_03

Walking on sunshine, though. It's it's pretty summery. That is summer. Summer. That's what we're doing. I know. I think it's walking on sunshine.

SPEAKER_02

All right, you sold me.

SPEAKER_03

Here's the thing, though. Like, you make my dreams come true would blow Ride Like the Wind out of the park. But we're only picking a winner. We're just trying to get to the bottom of uh the number one. So we gotta make some tough calls here.

SPEAKER_02

And this next one is incredibly well.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, this one is George Michaeloff.

SPEAKER_02

George Michaelov, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

George Michaeloff. Wake me up before you go go. Wake me up before you go go. Believe me, hang it on like the go-go. Versus faith. Because I gotta have faith.

unknown

I gotta have a faith.

SPEAKER_03

It was faith the 80s, though, actually. Faith might have been 90s.

SPEAKER_02

You think if it was 90s, it was 1990.

SPEAKER_03

This is embarrassing that I didn't do my due diligence on this very small amount of research I had to do.

SPEAKER_02

I I think, I think faith, what if it's 90, then we have to cross it up. So I'll do the quick research right now.

SPEAKER_03

I'm looking it up too.

SPEAKER_02

Faith. Oh, what do we got? 87.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, okay. I really like Wake Me Up Before You Go Go, though.

SPEAKER_02

The only thing about this is like my uh my cousins had this like rock wall right next to their swing set, and we would put a stereo up there and we would listen to Faith over and over again.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, I can do Faith too.

SPEAKER_02

Well, it is Wake Me Up Before You Go Go because it's that it it's just that song, it does it makes you want to get up and go do something. It's like if from Zoolander when they're you know what I mean, pouring the gas or whatever. But like it's it's just kind of evokes that it's summer, let's get things going, let's wake up, let's go to the beach, let's let's not miss any of this. So I do I do love that too.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I think I think that's right. We have to remember what our task at hand is.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_03

We can't get distracted with our own feelings about these songs. Like, this isn't what is the best song. This is what is the best song for this. Okay. Next up, Africa. Versus break my stride. Break my stride.

SPEAKER_02

So so to that logic, Africa is to me a far superior song. Yeah. Break my stride, though. Yeah. I mean This is tough.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Africa though, I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

I thought Break My Stride was like Toto or one of those. No, no, Africa's Toto. Africa's Toto.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And then at work. One of those.

SPEAKER_02

It's like Matthew Strider or something like that.

SPEAKER_03

But I it's like, Strider wrote Break My Stride.

SPEAKER_02

Would that be true?

SPEAKER_03

Look at that.

SPEAKER_02

Look at that. So I think I think it's that. I think it's Break My Stride.

SPEAKER_03

Let's do Break My Stride. This is gonna be so controversial. Good thing we don't have too many listeners because we would begin.

SPEAKER_02

There's people, yeah. There's people who are like almost religious fanatics when it comes to the song Africa. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

We have the Yachtly Crew concert next week.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And that's always like it's Indian Ranch. Oh my God.

SPEAKER_02

Is it do you think it's too late to get tickets? No, I haven't even gotten tickets yet. All right.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, this is the third or fourth year in a row that you've said that you're gonna go. So I'm not gonna hold out hope. Well, I went this year. I went last year. I know. You went to Indian Ranch and now you know what a wonderful venue Indian Ranch is. Oh my God. Yes. Okay. Okay. We got Footloose. Not gotta loose. Footloose. Versus Let's Hear It for the Boy.

SPEAKER_00

Because every time he pulls me new, I just want to kiss Let's Here for the Boy.

SPEAKER_03

I'm gonna go let's hear it for the Boy. Let's hear it for the Boy like amps me up.

SPEAKER_02

I I I agree. And this is from both from Footloose, I think.

SPEAKER_03

No, I think Let's Hear for the Boy was the Flash Dance? Flash Dance. Yeah, I think so.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Well, yeah, right. I'm with you. Let's hear it for the boy.

SPEAKER_03

Let's hear it for the boy. It's just uh it really, although did you happen to watch the music video for that one? No, it's all like you come out, and the first one is a little boy who and like it's it's a weird this little boy's in trouble in class, and she comes out and gives him like a tuxedo, but she's saying the words are a little more sexual or like in rangos, calling them our love. Almost like blank chef memory. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yep, yep. The smooch.

SPEAKER_02

The FBI agent.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So that was a little bit weird to me. And then there's like a teenage boy, and it was a lot of weird stuff. Love the song though. I'm not gonna go on. So next up we have Take On Me versus Love Shack. I think Love Shack.

SPEAKER_02

But Take On Me was like a I mean it's got a synthesizer.

SPEAKER_03

That's huge.

SPEAKER_02

Talking about like it's it's from there's a scene in that movie. This is a hot hole, uh, Corky Romano. Yeah, where he's like singing this. Yeah, you guys want some cookies? All right. Have you seen what's that Corky Romano? Who was that? That was uh Chris Catan. Chris Catan. He doesn't he looks like I think he's a little bit problematic. Is there something going on with him?

SPEAKER_03

I don't know. I remember seeing something or somebody talking about how he was just a huge asshole when they met him.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so I can see that.

SPEAKER_03

So what do you think? So you want to do take on me? Take on me is more of a quintessentially 80s tune.

SPEAKER_02

It's yeah, so it's a great you're so the summer banger is Love Shack, though.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, you're right. You know, yeah, yeah, I think so. Now we got Don't Dream It's Over. Don't dream it's over versus Can't Fight This Feeling. Don't Dream It's Over is a little bit sad.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's always Can't Fight This Feeling. But I'm gonna go with the Speedwagon on this.

SPEAKER_03

I'm gonna go Speedwagon too. It's a good call. We just gotta make we gotta make tough calls and we gotta move on from it.

SPEAKER_02

You know, and this is gonna be the hardest one for me.

SPEAKER_03

This is the hardest one for you. Okay, easy lover. Versus red red wine.

unknown

Go to my game.

SPEAKER_03

I'd go easy lover. Oh, so here's I'm a Philly Collins gal.

SPEAKER_02

Phil Collins, I love Phil Collins, but I'll tell you what. There used to be in restaurants, there used to be little jukeboxes on the seats.

SPEAKER_03

Oh yeah, Uncle Tony's.

SPEAKER_02

Uncle Tony's other places. I remember I would always, always put red, red wine in that. Yeah. When that song was out, that was my favorite song as a kid.

SPEAKER_03

I love red, red wine, and I love their other one, their Elvis cover.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I can't help fall in love with you. Yeah. Yeah, that's a that's true. You be for it.

SPEAKER_03

I love that like you weren't they like British or something, these like white British men. These white British men like added this Jamaican player to everything.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah. That is smart. You know? Oh god.

SPEAKER_03

So funny. All right. What do you think? So you're going, you're going with. I'm you know what? I think this is a decision that you need to make. I can't make this decision for you. And I'm willing to go with because you're emotionally attached. I'm really emotionally attached to the next ones that we're gonna do. So you take the lead on this one.

SPEAKER_02

It's your call. Oh my god. The next the next one, I wonder where you've been landing on that. But, anyways, I would say so the red and wine's not necessarily a summer banger.

SPEAKER_03

That's what that's what I was thinking. I think that easy lover just sounds lighter.

SPEAKER_02

It's summary. More summary. It's just it's yeah, it's summary, unfortunately. All right. All right. Well, I like this this next one.

SPEAKER_03

Don't worry, we can do another one where it's a different kind of thing. Okay, next up, you can call me Alfred. Versus walk of life. Both of these songs are very in my memories. This is like we used to drive to the beach, we'd listen to You Can Call Me Al. My dad would make us all pretend to pick an instrument, and we'd uh like I'd play the guitar, you know, my mom would sing. My dad was always like on the keyboards because he was driving, so that was easier, you know. Um, and you can call me ow to me is just summer. But walk of life is dire straits banger.

SPEAKER_02

It's a fucking banger. Dire Straits has some other bangers too. Like So Far Away, that's a great banger. Oh, I think Walk of Life. Okay. All right. I was gonna let you go sentimental on it. But you can call me Al. Like the video is not, there's no summer going on there.

SPEAKER_03

No, no, it's isn't it like every taste being silly?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I don't know, prepending the instruments.

SPEAKER_03

I I do love that, but we're we're gonna go walk of life just for you know, we gotta we gotta make the call. Come on, Eileen. I'm gonna versus Jesse's girl.

SPEAKER_00

I wish that I had Jesse's girl.

SPEAKER_03

Now I have a little story about Jesse's girl. So when I was in college, I dated a kid named Jess for three months. Then we broke up, and then I ended up dating his roommate for two years. And I used to make jokes and be like, Did you used to sing Jesse's girl?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. He was like, That's not bad, actually.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, no, I did not really.

SPEAKER_02

That's freaking awesome, actually. Oh, but yeah, because the whole like, what do they call that? Coveting. He was coveting you.

SPEAKER_03

He was coveting. The video though for Jesse's girl, I believe that Rick Springfield was a good 10 to 25 years older than the people that were the subject, than Jesse and his girl.

SPEAKER_02

Springfield's still doing it though. Yeah. He's still breaking out this hit. So come on Eileen's an absolute fucking banger.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, come on Eileen, I think, might be more the video. It's more upbeat. It's like doom, doom, doom, you know. Yeah. It's like I guess we should say, like, are we listening to this on the way to the beach?

SPEAKER_02

I think we're listening. Well, I think we're probably more likely listening to Jesse's girl. I think Jesse's girl feels more like summer to me than come on Eileen. It's too British. So sometimes the British stuff pulls you away from summer because it's like you're thinking of the rain.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And you know, yeah. And nope, you know. All right. This next one I think is um This is the last one, right? Yeah, this one's pretty easy for me.

SPEAKER_03

All right. We built this city.

SPEAKER_00

We built this city. We built this city on fucking rope.

SPEAKER_03

Versus we didn't start the fire.

SPEAKER_00

We didn't start the fire.

SPEAKER_03

We didn't start the fire. I love it. It's a great song. It feels educational.

SPEAKER_02

And it feels political. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So like it's not an easy list. You can't listen to it because the whole time I'm like, wait, what's that about? What's that about? What's that about? I like it.

SPEAKER_02

You're trying to get good vibes, and then you're like, JFK blown away.

SPEAKER_03

What else do I have to say?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Like, hold on. And we built the city all the way through. Feel good.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Right. I remember it. They had like the hundred worst songs of all time on like one of those VH1 countdowns. And they picked We Built the City as the worst song. And every time I hear it, I'm like, I love this song. Why do they hate this song? I'm gonna go back. They just made one more song, and I didn't have anything to go against it. We built the city versus Born in the USA. Because that's this is I mean, speaking of summer, that's the 4th of July all round.

SPEAKER_02

Born in the USA all day. And in that album, pretty good.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

All right. Born in the USA. That's gonna be the winner for that. Okay, we edit it. Let's circle back. All right. We're gonna go Kokomo versus Boys of Summer. I go Kokomo. Your love versus I Wanna Dance, your love, right? Your love. Pretty easy. Yeah. Get out of my dreams versus everybody wants to rule the world. I think get out of my dreams might be more summer bangery.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. It's feeling more summer. Okay. Yeah. Okay. So far, I'm I'm with you 100%.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, but we're right on right on schedule. No, I don't know. Ride like the wind versus walking on sunshine. Walking on sunshine?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, not because it's it's definitely not a better song.

SPEAKER_03

No, it's more of a summer beat summary. Okay. Wake me up before you go go versus break my stride. Wake me up. Wake me up. I was thinking the same thing. Let's hear let's hear it for the boy versus Love Shack. Let's hear it for the boy. I'm just gonna go Love Shack. We're gonna go Love Shack. Love Shack summary. Okay, can't fight this feeling versus easy lover. Can't fight this feeling?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

But that's not going the distance. Walk of life versus Jesse's girl. I like walk of life. I'm going walk of life. Kokomo versus your love. We did say it was gonna be the winner. Get out of my dreams versus walking on sunshine.

SPEAKER_02

If what are we doing? We're doing summary, right?

SPEAKER_03

Walking on sunshine, I think. Yeah. Okay. Wake me up before you go go versus love shack.

SPEAKER_02

Wake me up, I I think has to win that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Can't fight this feeling. Walk of life and born in the USA are the other ones.

SPEAKER_02

Born in the USA.

SPEAKER_03

Let's just take let's knock out the other two. Alright, so now we got Walking on Sunshine versus Wake Me Up Before You Go Go. I think walking, walking on Sunshine.

SPEAKER_02

Really?

SPEAKER_03

Over Wake Me Up Before You Go Go? You think so? You think Wake Me Up? Well right, let's do this. Kokomo versus Walking on Sunshine. Wake Me Up Before You Go Go versus Born in the USA.

SPEAKER_02

Now that's hard.

SPEAKER_03

I think Born in the USA.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

I think we're coming down to final, final bracket. Kokomo versus Born in the USA.

SPEAKER_02

So, I mean, this is the 250, right? Let's kind of play a role.

SPEAKER_03

This is the 250. By that he means the 250th anniversary of America. That's right. But like I'm not doing a novelty bit here. I'm going Kokomo. That's my vote.

SPEAKER_02

I think of one of the great so who's gonna do a better summer song than the fucking Beach Boys?

SPEAKER_03

They're literally called the Beach Boys. Yeah, honestly, the Beach Boys probably could have had like six or seven in there. Like surfing USA.

unknown

I know.

SPEAKER_03

California girls. I are they all 80s or were they some in the 70s too? I think they're 60s in there. Seven California girls. I didn't even think of any of those.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I mean, they're all beach songs.

SPEAKER_03

Let's say this the Beach Boys obviously win for the 80s summer banger artist.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, 80s, probably 70s too. Probably 70s too. We don't know what was in the 80s and what was in the 70s, though, but California Girls might be the best summer song.

SPEAKER_03

Are you gonna like break in California girls over I don't think it's I don't think it's 80s?

SPEAKER_02

Well, if it is, I'm gonna check because if it is, it sneaks in. Are you is that a mulligan? Is that what that would be called? It might be and well, David Lee Roth did a cover of it. I wonder if that I remember that here. Okay, let's see here. 65. Okay, so that's one couple.

SPEAKER_03

Is Cocobo in the 80s? Shit.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, cocoa. You know what's funny? We gotta check that because it almost feels like it could be 90s.

SPEAKER_03

No, I don't think it's 88. 88. Perfect.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, you want to know why? Listen to this. This just kind of solidifies everything. It was on a soundtrack. Do you know the soundtrack? Cocktail. Yep.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, he was in the the whole video. Was Tom Cruise smooching up his lady, Elizabeth Shoe.

SPEAKER_02

Elizabeth Shoe. The lovely Elizabeth Shue.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. It was a lot more easier on the eyes than other people he started movies with that we've recently talked about.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Elizabeth Shoe. What are we? I can't believe we were gonna pick California girls in 65.

SPEAKER_02

Like just throw it in. Well, hold on. Hold on. The David, you're gonna have to outro the David Lee Roth, because I'm gonna try that.

SPEAKER_03

No, we're not giving we're not giving David Lee Roth. I would just like to say it for the record, too, that Kokomo. Did we pick Kokomo to win? Kokomo won, yeah. It has nothing to do with John Seamos. I just want to put that out there.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Yeah. And how is that? What about today's summer hits? Isn't it isn't it kind of like strange that there was like this thing that came on my feed or whatever the hell you call it, and it was like the most popular song of the year. I knew like barely any of them.

SPEAKER_03

I know a good amount just because my kids, you know, they You went to a Noah Kahan concert. I did go to a Noah Khan concert last night. It was incredible.

SPEAKER_02

Who the fuck is that?

SPEAKER_03

I know, and I'm trying to make Greg do an episode on Noah Khan because I think it would be great. You have you don't even understand the the psychological like things happening in his music. It's like all about his like family dynamics, growing up in New England, drinking a lot growing up in New England. It's all very he grew up in he's from Vermont, so it's like all about like being from a small town in New England and then you know getting famous and fucking hating your dad and your sibling drama. And I just feel like it would be a field day for you.

SPEAKER_02

Really?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. And and like well, how long is it? And there's a there's a documentary on Netflix about him too that like it goes into it a lot more. So you could watch the documentary and then we could discover the songs.

SPEAKER_02

How long has this guy been popular?

SPEAKER_03

So he he's stick season, you know, stick season. It's in uh her verma, but it's the season of the sticks, and uh soccer mom, she forgot that I exist.

SPEAKER_02

No, no, none of that.

SPEAKER_03

I do you not you don't listen to music?

SPEAKER_02

Listening to plush on Pandora. Oh, like 90s alternative.

SPEAKER_03

I do love that. Uh, you should branch out sometime though. There's a lot of good music.

SPEAKER_02

I know, I know, I do, I know. It's it's like it's a mix of like classic, like a lot of Beatles, a lot of like a lot of grateful dead. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

You know what's good? Pandora is good for that because you can put in artists that you like and it'll like play newer people for you.

SPEAKER_02

I know, it's it's weird. So I work, you know, at the hospital, some of the nurses are younger, and they saw my phone on Pandora and they were like, that's not really that's not really something people do anymore.

SPEAKER_03

I use Pandora. I like Pandora for like when I'm cooking or in the morning. I have like they have a 90s station, like mellow 90s, and it's all singer-songwriter so like Sunny Came Home and like shit like that. Yeah, Sunny came home. So it's like not intense, but like you know, you hear stuff and you're like, oh my god, I forgot about that. Yeah, wow, you don't hear about Sonny Came Home. You don't hear about Sonny Came Home a lot. Um Lullaby by Sean Mullins. If I say Alexa, play music, I love the first song they always put on is Lullaby by Sean Mullins. And I have never once asked her to play Lullaby by Sean Mullins. I'm like, where are you getting this? I mean, sure, it is a great song, but yeah, well, I mean come on, everything.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, no, I don't think I I mean I get it, right? Yeah, I know. Some of those remember, you know, you know who is good who sometimes comes up on my thing, and I'm like, uh train.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Train was a great one. Creed is no, no, we're not gonna Well, I went to the concert last year. That was Do you remember when we got in that fight about the you guys came over and we were watching Survivor or friends, and we weren't talking to you, and you got wicked mad, and I like yelled at you on the phone after because you like stormed out. Wait, no, not at all.

SPEAKER_02

When was this?

SPEAKER_03

We were cute. It was our senior year, so I don't even think you guys were dating, but you came over and we were I don't think we were even being rude. I think we were just watching Survivor and not like talking to you guys. And you all got very upset and you like called after all. We're like you and John Eric and maybe skip and like call this afternoon. We were not feeling it out, and I like yelled at you about it. I don't even remember like specifics, yeah. But she always said that that song drops of Jupiter when it's like your best friend sticking up for you, even when they know you're wrong, reminded her of me. So oh, because you you yelled at me because I was you're being a dick.

SPEAKER_02

All right, yeah. Sounds like something I can't deny that. That probably happened. Look, when I arrive somewhere, I want to be um welcomed. You know, I don't know what what's the word for that, right? Like, yeah, there was you sticking up for her, even when you know she's wrong.

SPEAKER_03

All right, well, this was great. So, Kokomo, you are officially you have been crowned our number one eighties banger. Bang a summer.

SPEAKER_02

Number one eighties summer banger. Yeah, I don't I think it's hard to argue that. No, I mean if I even asked the internet, let's do a quick like AI.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, let's ask Chat GPT. Actually, you asked your chat GPT, what is the number one 80s summer song?

SPEAKER_02

What do we got?

SPEAKER_03

I don't know. They're thinking there isn't an official number one. Number one, what they crowned summer of 69. Kokomo's number five. Their list Jesse's girl. Summer of 69, walking on sunshine, vacation, boys of summer, cocomo, cruel summer, you need my dreams. All summer long by Kid Rock. No.

SPEAKER_02

What? That's not first of all, no. Every every breath you take, no. When doves cry.

SPEAKER_03

See, this is what happens when you go to a robot. They don't they don't understand.

SPEAKER_02

Robot doesn't know what the fuck. You can't say, hey robot, what just set makes you fuck your your skin tingle summer? Like, you know what I mean? What just makes you feel like it's summertime when you hear it? The robot's like, you don't know, robot.

SPEAKER_03

Somebody gave me an idea. It said, ask it to give you like a profile on me. And it was like spot on. It's like you love experiences, you have a tendency to like adapt to projects rather than eliminate them, blah blah blah. And like based on like what I've asked it, it came up with this whole profile. It's pretty fucking crazy. But, anyways, all right. Well, this was great. I'm gonna get in my car and just roll the windows down and listen to some Kokomo.

SPEAKER_02

Aruba Jamaica, who will want to take that.

SPEAKER_03

Right. All right, we will see you next week.
