This episode brought to you by Long Cove, your 1200 acre backyard.

Nellie Scuitto  0:05
Welcome to the Bubble Lounge. I'm Nelly Scuitto.

Martha Jackson  0:07
And I'm Martha Jackson. And we're at the tail end of spring break and what better place to spend it than Long Cove?

Nellie Scuitto  0:14
Agreed. I feel like I'm miles away, but we're an hour out of town.

Martha Jackson  0:18
Well, so I first learned about this place is this beautiful Lakeside community, like Nellie said just a little over an hour outside of Dallas. I learned about it from Alexis, who was out here with friends and she's like, Mom, you've got to come see this place. And she starts telling me how it's kind of like seaside all the houses have these cute names. There's this club, which has a pool and a beautiful view of the lake. And I just like what I've never heard of it just feel like Lake watercolour. Yes.

Nellie Scuitto  0:47
You know, it's got the same kind of feel with kids on the golf carts and it's gated and you're sort of locked away but everything at your fingertips

Martha Jackson  0:55
except there's Longhorns. I don't know if you saw the Longhorns when you drove in.

Nellie Scuitto  0:58
 I did.

Martha Jackson  0:58
But there's a pack of Longhorns which really makes you feel like you're in Texas.

Nellie Scuitto  1:01
It's true. I love Longhorns. Yes, I saw them. Well, I took a picture.

Martha Jackson  1:06
Nellie and I are literally sitting poolside, but like right inside a beautiful, like lounge area. And there's all these cute kids in and out of the pool, even though it's not a very warm day.

Nellie Scuitto  1:15
No. And this is apparently where all the fun happens right here.

Martha Jackson  1:18
It looks like it.

Nellie Scuitto  1:19
So today we're here interviewing a couple families who actually live here. They're Park City residents, but have a place here. And we want to hear all about it, how their kids feel about it, how they feel about it, etc.

Martha Jackson  1:30
Well, we have Kiki Pennington, who is the president of Long Cove Realty and she's going to just tell us about the community and the people that have homes out here. We're also going to talk to Rob crane, who I know many of you know, he's a longtime Highland Park resident, went to the schools has raised a family here and then we're going to talk to Kate cutshaw, who moved to the park cities from Connecticut a couple of years ago. She has a couple of middle school kids and she bought a home out here at Long Cove.

Nellie Scuitto  1:58
So first up, we've got Kiki Pennington, Kiki driving up here was so beautiful. It's not that far away. And I feel like I'm in a different world.

Kikki Pendington  2:04
It really is a different world. We we love that entry with the slowly opening gate. And the drive. It takes a good seven to 10 minutes to get from that front gate to the actual homes in the community. And we like to call that detox drive.

Martha Jackson  2:22
I like that. So you're ready and relaxed by the time you get to your home.

Kikki Pendington  2:25
That's right. And one of my favorite things on Fridays is to watch the families come through the gates. And as soon as they hit that gate, you see the sunroof open kids climbing up and they're waving their hands and standing up coming through celebrating a little parade on the way in for the weekend.

Martha Jackson  2:41
Well, that almost sounds like my kids go to Camp Ozark. And that's kind of how they welcome in all the kids stand out of the sunroofs. And they're cheering them on.

Nellie Scuitto  2:50
Way higher end camp.

Martha Jackson  2:54
It's a camp for all ages. Yes, absolutely. And

Kikki Pendington  2:57
I do think that when these families get here, when these children get here, they feel like they're coming to camp every single weekend.

Martha Jackson  3:04
Well, there's always so much going on out here. I mean, all day long. You have events at the pool events out on the main lawn and Mr. Donovan out there with the kids. He's one of our favorites.

Nellie Scuitto  3:14
Yes, he's one of our favorites. And just Just a quick question. How did you end up here? And what's your role?

Kikki Pendington  3:20
Well, I am president of Long Cove Realty. So I work with our sales team and actively sell properties. I have had a friendship with the developer and his wife and family for a long, long time. And several years ago, they asked me if I would be interested in helping get the word out in Dallas. I have a large family, a lot of children in different private schools throughout Dallas. And so it was a great opportunity for me to just spread the word in town. And that role eventually morphed into helping with marketing, helping with sales and just kind of having some great oversight in the community.

Nellie Scuitto  4:03
And when you say a large family, what do you mean? Well, I

Kikki Pendington  4:06
have eight children. Do you really ranging in age from two and a half to 18 years old?

Nellie Scuitto  4:12
Okay, well, then you're the perfect person to ask. I noticed driving up here I thought, oh my god, like we just got back from spring break more than I with our seniors. And I the first thing I noticed was, oh my god, this place would be great for a two year old or an 18 year old.

Kikki Pendington  4:27
That's absolutely how it is. And my children spend most of our weekends out here we come out and it's really great to see teenagers kind of letting go of all their high school Dallas type socializing and things and come out here and you'll see him walking around with fishing poles or getting out on boats and wake surfing really active and really engaging with each other and with their families.

Martha Jackson  4:51
Well Kiki that's actually how I found out about Long Cove is my daughter who's a senior in high school has a best friend that has a home out here. And she came home and she said Mom, you've got to come see this place. It's it's kind of like seaside all the homes have these cute names, there's so much to do. And she has had some really good memories out here with a big group of friends and absolutely loves it. They love the independence that they get. It's so safe out here.

Nellie Scuitto  5:15
Yeah, and for the, for the audience, I was sitting to Martha just before that this feels like watercolor to me. But an hour drive from Dallas.

Kikki Pendington  5:25
That was definitely the original inspiration was to recreate some of these really fabulous communities like seaside watercolor Keola, Sea Island, but to do it an hour away from Dallas, where families can come and be here regularly. It's so easy to get here that many of our families are here, you know, 90 or 100 days out of the year.

Martha Jackson  5:49
Oh, wow, that's kind of unheard of with a second home, you know, you don't usually usually have to get on a plane to go to your second home. So that's so nice that they can spend that much time out here.

Kikki Pendington  5:58
Absolutely. I think that that has really been a driving force. Since 2020 or so when air travel became a little bit tougher, getting further away was tougher. And so many Dallas families have loved being able to just get here and you can spend one night and feel like you're on vacation or you can spend the week.

Nellie Scuitto  6:16
Well, so tell us about the community here. I mean, obviously this is based on community. Give us like a rundown on how that works.

Kikki Pendington  6:23
Well, one of the great things about Long Cove is that most of the families here are people that you might just run into in town, you might see them in Highland Park village, their kids are going to be in the Highland Park schools or say ESD we have a lot of families there St. Mark's any of those Dallas private schools as well. So what's really great is once you get out here, your kids have this free range, and they're able to jump in with friends who they know friends who they see in Dallas, they really have a lot of freedom and a lot of ability to interact with each other. And we on the flip side of that Long Cove are working very hard to create those opportunities for the community to come together and families to meet one another and spend time together.

Martha Jackson  7:06
Well, I love everything that you're saying about creating memories, because that's what life is all about. You know you, you don't remember the handbag that you bought, but you remember your experiences. And it's just so important to make those family memories.

Kikki Pendington  7:19
It really is. And one of the phrases that I use out here is accidental memory making. So you know it's so stressful when you plan a big fishing trip for your kids. And by the time you've packed all the gear and you get out there, somebody's crying, somebody's got to use the bag. No one catches a fish and the others don't. And it's just no fun. But out at Long Cove. The fishing ponds are just sitting there waiting for you. The hooks are baited and ready to go toss a line in. Maybe you spend 20 minutes and catch a fish and you've got a great memory

Nellie Scuitto  7:52
you had me at the hooks are baited. That's the worst part about fishing.

Martha Jackson  7:56
I hear you I don't like touching worms myself.

Nellie Scuitto  7:59
So I have a question as I drove in all I could think of is I love the farmhouse look, and there were different size places. Just a broad question. What would what are the sizes of the homes here? Does it range from condos to homes or? That's right houses?

Kikki Pendington  8:13
Yes. So we do have everything from some townhomes all the way up to large custom homes. Many of our owners are coming in in a cottage type of property, spending some time out here realizing that they absolutely love it, and then kind of doubling down on their investment and building a custom home that suits their family. As you can see, when you drive through here, there's quite a bit of construction, new homes that have that have gone in that are going to be ready for this upcoming summer. We do have a decent number of existing homes that also come up for sale now that we are a more mature community. And we've had some owners who are turning over and as I said doubling down with a new custom home as well.

Martha Jackson  8:56
Right? You just literally answered my question is because I have seen a lot of construction, just beautiful homes like Nellie saying, and I was curious if any of them were up for grabs. There are a handful

Kikki Pendington  9:06
that are up for grabs. And this is the time of year where everyone's pushing really hard to be ready for a beautiful summer out here. And this is when properties do tend to come available as well. Right.

Nellie Scuitto  9:18
So Kiki, thank you so much for being here sharing your perspective, inviting us in here and let our audience know how they can contact you.

Kikki Pendington  9:28
Well, it's really easy to just hop on our website, which is Long Cove Te x.com and there you'll be able to click on a link to get in touch with our sales team if you'd like to.

Nellie Scuitto  9:37
Awesome thank you so much. I love

Martha Jackson  9:40
everything that Kiki had to say about Long Cove Nellie because she really painted a great picture of just that sense of community and I think the older we get that that is so important to have.

Nellie Scuitto  9:49
It really isn't who better to talk about it than a mother of eight children.

Martha Jackson  9:53
Absolutely varying ages. I know she's got so many kids and perfect example of everything there is to do You out there. Next up, we're going to talk to Rob crane.

Nellie Scuitto  10:04
Rob crane, welcome to the Bubble Lounge. It's good to have you here. Your homeowner out here.

Rob Crane  10:09
We are. We're fairly new been out here for about a year now.

Unknown Speaker  10:13
So one of the things Nelly and I talk about all the time on the podcast is just that strong sense of community, in our neighborhood in the park cities. And of course, you grew up here. So you really know what I'm talking about with that. And I feel like that's kind of transferred out here to the lake.

Rob Crane  10:28
It absolutely has, you know, growing up, you know, I'm a child of the 1969. You know, both era. So I went through the, you know, the park cities in the 70s and 80s, where we just parents opened the door, we all ran out and didn't come back until sun went down. And, you know, we had that safety and security then and out here at Long Cove. That's what we have now. And we come out my six year old 10 year old opened the door and they go run into the sport field. And it's I don't think twice about it.

Martha Jackson  10:58
And you have four kids, right?

Rob Crane  11:00
We have 310 year old six year old and a three year old. So it's

Martha Jackson  11:03
it really keeps them entertained out here. There's always something going on.

Rob Crane  11:07
Absolutely. The great thing about this place is the electronics get put away. And the kids go immediately to the sport field, and that the older boys and our three year old, he wants to go to Treehouse Treehouse treehouse. And of course, that's the adventure course with the zipline and all of the fun over there. And then come spring and summertime that we're about to walk into this pool out here we're looking at so beautiful. Yes, we'll be here every single day. And that's where this great community, they're more they're more deals done in the long coat pool than there is a Dallas Country Club. It's amazing.

Nellie Scuitto  11:43
So how did you choose this location? How'd you find out about it?

Rob Crane  11:46
You know, we were looking around the lake and we had a place we were kind of interested in and Kiki Pennington out here at Long Cove is just fabulous. had been cold calling me for a while. And you know, ultimately, my wife and I had a weekend we were available to come out. And we loved it. But what really sold us was the following weekend, we came back out with the kids. And once we saw the kids and appreciated that security and appreciated all the activities. We were we drove out the two of us and looked at each other and said if we buy this is where we're buying.

Nellie Scuitto  12:21
So okay, so obviously in a great way this is remote. So there aren't a ton of restaurants to go to here. But I assume you don't need them because of the property right? Like I see a breakfast being made right out here. It says drink served all day bar open till close and in time. Tell us about that. What do you what do you do with your wife? When you want to have dinner? Do you tend to stay at home? Or do you tend to wander about here?

Rob Crane  12:46
Great question. And really, it's seasonal. Because come spring and summertime, the food here is awesome. Chef Jeff, I think you came in last year, everything on that menu is great. I mean, we'll have lunch here. And if we're going to be lazy about dinner, we'll just order here before they close up and take it home for dinner. What this has done for us in the pandemic I think did for a lot of people is it got us back to go into the grocery store and cooking at home and not going out and eating as much. And we're still kind of in that, that, you know that pattern. So you know, we'll bring steaks out, you know, we'll go back to these it's not a plaza and grab a couple of good steaks. And we'll see beat them up here and grill them. And we like just the community of stay in, you know, within ourselves here. There are a couple of restaurants in town we last night, we grabbed some Mexican food we had a bunch of labor friends in and that made it easy. So you got lots of options to do what you want to do. But we typically stay within the confines of our home and enjoy just being here self contained

Martha Jackson  13:45
just family time, which sounds perfect to me and especially with kids not with on their electronics. I love that.

Nellie Scuitto  13:51
I do too. And and just to question Kiki was mentioning that a lot of people spend, you know, a third of the year here. Did you find that your vacations out of town stopped and you spend more time here in the past year? Yes. Okay.

Rob Crane  14:06
So last summer, I think we were here every weekend. But two and one of those was a pre planned family trip down to Mexico. And then spring break. You know, one of us had been here all week. And that was that's what we'll do most spring breaks. So the answer is yes. We love it here. We can decompress in that hour and 15 minute drive getting here. And then once we're you know, here, it's alright if we have to go back into town. The beauty of it is I'll grab the boy that's got the soccer game or the football game. I'll drive back to Dallas. We'll play our football game and it's close enough we can drive right back out. Yeah. So we just love making this you know, our home where we can breathe a little easier and the air is always a little fresher.

Martha Jackson  14:52
Well obviously you spent a ton of time here and I would imagine you've created some pretty awesome memories with your family. Tell us some of your favorite memories. out here.

Rob Crane  15:01
You know, I think my middle child's first fish was caught out here but I, his love of fishing, and all the little ponds here they've got that they stock with the fish and bass. That's what I love because it reminds me of my you know, with my dad, he was 100 fisherman, he went to Highland Park, and he would go duck hunting before going to high school at Highland Park is back then duck hunting wasn't that far away?

Nellie Scuitto  15:27
Can we still do that?

Martha Jackson  15:29
I don't know if that's an option, those

Nellie Scuitto  15:30
pretty little ducks across from up

Rob Crane  15:35
may not be late,

Nellie Scuitto  15:36
I might be in jail. I'm in jail.

Rob Crane  15:38
But that's really what I enjoy the most is being able to bring my boys out here and instill that love of the country and appreciating you know, natural life and hunting and fishing and those things that my dad taught me. That's probably what I think about the most in value and having that time with my kiddos,

Nellie Scuitto  15:57
well, then only an hour and 10 minutes away, which is ridiculous. Absolutely. Yeah.

Rob Crane  16:02
That's a game changer.

Unknown Speaker  16:03
Okay, so Nellie and I have a question. We noticed some really unique home names out there. And I want to know what the name of your home is and how you came up with the name.

Rob Crane  16:13
We are still debating. My wife is Ole Miss Rubble, I'm a Texas Longhorn. We have gone through several names. I think we're just going to settle on a name that she came up with. And it's called just fortunate ones. And just the blessings of being able to have a home here and just recognizing and having that out there as our home name. I think that's what we're gonna end up going with is just fortunate ones. I like it. I like it, too.

Unknown Speaker  16:40
Rob, thank you so much for spending time with us today and sharing your memories and all the great times you've had out here at Long Cove.

Rob Crane  16:47
Oh, thank you for having me. It's a wonderful place.

Nellie Scuitto  16:50
So it was great to talk to Rob a long time Park City's all his life resident and how he found the amenities here. So amazing. And that sense of community that he felt growing up in the park cities. That's

Martha Jackson  17:01
right, he really said that it reminded him of of the good old days. I like to call it when people would just let their kids run around and have all sorts of fun. And well, he

Nellie Scuitto  17:09
talked about the fishing, and just how everybody rides around on a golf cart and how his kids really rediscovered the great outdoors here.

Martha Jackson  17:18
That's right, I loved his memory of his son catching their first fish because that's such a great memory for so many kids. I still remember the first one I caught with my dad. And it's just such a special time.

Nellie Scuitto  17:29
Well, and if they put the worm on the hook for you with better services there.

Martha Jackson  17:34
That's kind of our fishing, right? I mean, if you don't have to touch that nasty worm, we're all in.

Nellie Scuitto  17:40
So next up, we have Kate cutshaw, who moved from Connecticut to the park cities, and immediately bought a house out here. Kate, welcome to the show.

Kate Cutshaw  17:47
Thank you so much for having me. I'm so excited to be here. You're right. We moved to Dallas almost four years ago, right before COVID in 2019. And things happen so quickly. We got right into the park City's community. My kids were at Bradfield. I jumped right in and got involved with PTA. I'm now the PTA president. I don't know how that happened. But it's been so much fun. And really what happened was COVID came along. And here we are in this brand new community didn't have a whole lot to do. We weren't members at a country club yet and starting to get bored. So I just happened to flip open a magazine one day sitting at home and there was this beautiful advertisement for this lake community about an hour and 15 minutes away. And I said to my husband, I'm like, let's, let's take a look at this. This looks very compelling. And having lived in the New York City area, my adult life. And then Connecticut, we were used to having that town and country lifestyle. So you'd have your apartment in the city. And then you would drive an hour and 15 minutes if you're lucky. Unless you went to The Hamptons, yes, and four hours in traffic, which I do. And we were used to having that Town and Country feeling so where we were in New York, we lived on the Upper East Side but we belong to a club right outside the city in tuxedo Park and it was a lake community gated, and you could go there on the weekends and have golf and tennis and that Club II feel and when we got here, I said let's let's check this out. Let's Let's drive down what do we have to lose? So I contacted Kiki Pennington, who's amazing and she said come on down. Let's take a look. She took us on a golf cart golf cart ride and took us out on the boat and so we had both the land view and the water view and we brought the kids and we brought the dog and the kids were and crazy, they were like, This is amazing. It just seemed like an absolute no brainer. Then we're sitting in COVID. And we kind of sat on it for a year, the timing wasn't quite right. And then the timing became correct. And I called up Kiki again. And I said, Kiki, we're ready to pull the trigger. What do you have available, and Long Cove wasn't quite as developed as it is now. And so there is one home left in this Shuman pond area that we call and we we jumped on it. She said, this is the last one. This is the one that's perfect for your family. There are tons of cute neighbors and families that are right here. This is your your neighbors. We only want a precious darling.

Nellie Scuitto  20:49
anywhere without cute neighbors.

Martha Jackson  20:50
I have noticed it's a really good looking crowd out here.

Nellie Scuitto  20:56
So much like me, like I'm a New Yorker, by way of California move to the park cities. Now this place is beautiful. Did you feel sort of like a fish out of water coming here? Not at all. Did you just fit right in.

Kate Cutshaw  21:09
I feel like we just fit right in. To your point. Everyone's so cute here. But the land we plant there's tons of park City's families. But there's also families from everywhere. Both of our neighbors to our right are from from Lakewood. And then our neighbors to the left are from University Park. And they it turned out we have more mutual friends and connections than we could ever imagine putting together so that was so easy. And then the family across the way they have kids in private school, I ended up sending one of my children to private school. So it ended up all working out. Everyone's just so welcoming and easy. And at the end of the day, the common denominator. Everyone likes to have a good time.

Nellie Scuitto  21:58
I was gonna ask you that because more than I just got back from senior spring break in two different locations. Lord, what are the parents like here? Is it like do you just have cocktails on the lake? Or is there a real issue hang out in.

Kate Cutshaw  22:08
We love having cocktails on our porch. A lot of us have put on built outdoor fireplaces. And so our homes are actually called the porch homes. So it's and we also call ourselves downtown Long Cove because our homes are centrally located. So everyone just migrates over to our house, we're sitting out on the porch, we're having our ranch waters, and everyone has their Skyros with their names on them. Every house has its own brand. So it's kind of fun that way. And so we just kind of just congregate and gather and it really is the sense of community. Our homes are also located by what's called the toy barn. And it's right by the field, and it has all the games for the kids. And our children are kind of ranged from second third grade to early middle school. So the ages are close. And there are a lot of them. So everyone just plays and the girls tumble in the front yard. And so that's we really like being at our homes.

Martha Jackson  23:15
Yeah, it sounds like you've made so many friends out here. Like when we're at home, if the weather's nice, we sit outside sometimes and we might meet some neighbors or people walking by but out here that just seems like the natural thing that happens. It just happens organically.

Kate Cutshaw  23:28
It definitely happens organically. The other easy thing is to come down by the pool. And you just start chit chatting with friends and talking and or the kids end up playing together and then you end up chatting with the parents. We're all into our Mahjong, of course, and I agricultural and pickleball of course and we just you just pick up and go and wherever you are, you just make friends. It helps that you know people are friendly and outgoing and I think they're genuinely interested in getting to know each other and where are you from? How'd you get here?

Nellie Scuitto  24:04
Well, is this sort of is this the clubhouse that we're sitting in? Yes, were pretty

Kate Cutshaw  24:07
Hey, the lake club. Okay. And for now, this is this central location. There is another pool that's being built. But this is your your,

Martha Jackson  24:20
your kind of the hub hub. Well, we

Nellie Scuitto  24:23
were just really interested because it says bar are open to bar open till close in time. Like basically is it just open all the time and every time and you can BYOB

Kate Cutshaw  24:31
to? Yes, yes.

Martha Jackson  24:34
So talk to me you you mentioned everyone and my daughter told me this as well that everyone has their own Styrofoam cups with the name of their home on their like Each place has their own branding. What did you name your home?

Very good question. So we debated My husband loves all things Italian and he loves we're actually going to Italy this summer, but he just loves the lice lifestyle. So our home is called Casa su Lago which we think being Steakhouse in Italian, and we put you can make your own house sign that's put right in front of your house and so it says Casa su Lago. My home has a lot of greens decorated, so it's green with blue and we have a little boats with our family. Etched in on the sign. It's cute. So cups, branding, everyone's their

visors, gave me some linen napkins monogrammed with you know, we just go all out. Yeah.

So have you had friends come out and stay with you have a friend's family and I'm sure you've made some great memories out here.

Kate Cutshaw  25:41
Absolutely. All the above. Our doors always open. We love. We're coming. Right afterwards, you can come right over. I would love it. We love entertaining. And I think that was the intent. And the purpose is to make sure we can have friends and family. Come we have a wonderful home. Not the most sprawling Lakeside home here. But it's comfortable. I have eight bunk beds and two twin beds and guest room with a king bed postmaster. Like there's plenty of space. The more the merrier. In fact, we have guests here right now that are that use the home. While we're on spring break, and we'd love it that we have, we can cook out there firepits everywhere. The kids love to do smores we'd love to take ranch rides as we call them and go around on the golf cart. There's just miles and freshwater I went through. Absolutely. One of the fun things here is everybody gets their own golf cart. So that's a source of necessity. But also it's just fun. So I love to blare the music in the golf cart, go around sunset, there's a great point called Sunset point, a bridge. And you just have your cocktail with your music and watch the sunset. And that's one of our most favorite things that we can do while we're here. And I love to show our guests and family that when they come because I think it's just special. Yeah. And unique and a great view of the water. Right

and a good memory and a great

memory, great memory.

You know, we've heard people spend a lot of time out here. So how much time do you actually spend out here,

Kate Cutshaw  27:24
we get down here as often as possible. It's tricky when kids are busy with sports and activities, and they're looking for wins. And we're not that far away, or an hour and 15 minutes. So I would say any free night. We on the weekend. We're here, we just got back from spring break last night. And I'm here this morning here is we're here. And it's just that easy and convenient. Even if you want to make a day trip. You can get in and get out in a day easily. But then, Easter is coming up. And I can't wait because they get to come out on Thursday. And I don't have to leave until Sunday. And it's just nice to sit and be and I remember telling my husband a couple of weeks ago, we were at dinner and I looked over at him I just want you to know I love the lake house. It is my peaceful, happy place. You just release and let go as soon as you get here. And it's just a feeling that you can't be otherwise. So the convenience factor can't be beat.
